MINI-EVENT: CODA - IC EVENT LOG

Mini-Event - Coda

Mid-April, you receive two formal invitations. They arrive separately in two distinct envelopes and do not appear to be precisely related.
◎ The first is from Solvunn, signed and sealed by the Solvunn Council. It informs the reader that on April 18th, Josselyn Creed's fate will be publicly carried out according to Solvunn's traditions with the Old Gods. The location is in neutral territory, a safe distance from the Singularity's crater. The Council expresses deep regret for the actions of one of their own and invites you to attend as an observer if you wish to find closure. Portals are provided. The proceedings will be in the morning.

◎ The second is from your respective faction. The letter is less solemn and invites you to attend a weekend gala on April 21st - 23rd. It acknowledges that recent times have been difficult and that faction officials and locals wish to repay the Summoned for their contributions. Portals to each location are provided.
Divine Judgment
In the weeks leading up to Josselyn Creed's execution, many of you were allowed to question Josselyn. Now that you've received the answers you're seeking - as much as you were able to - officials have granted you the chance to gain some closure and witness her execution.

The factions will warn the Summoned that Solvunn does not take angering the Gods lightly. Her death will not be quick and will likely be sacrificial. They advise anyone who may not have the stomach for it to remain home and enjoy the festivities at the end of the week.

Attending her execution is optional and open to all. New arrivals are welcome to watch...though they may not want to. All characters may skip this portion of the event.

Participants of Event #12 are still welcome to speak to Josselyn. This section will close on April 30th.
Last Rites
CW: Disturbing imagery, animal death, ritualistic sacrifice, body horror.

So that all can attend, Solvunn will perform Josselyn's last rites in neutral territory. Anyone who attended the Peace Summit last year will recognize the area, though the colorful tents are gone. In their place are some plain stone benches and a temporary altar. Thick mists roll into the valley, bringing a chill to the air. As you arrive, you see Solvunn mages instructing volunteers to right certain stones as the last touches are added. Present to represent the other two factions are Jolene Sybell of Thorne and Reva Hym of the Free Cities.

The stones are arranged in spiraling circles, with twelve arches that span them. Carved into the ground beneath the arches are each of the Major Arcana. Find your matching Arcana and leave an offering if you want. You're told the gesture will appease the gods and ensure the "cleansing" is successful.

The Moon, Josselyn Creed's Arcana, has been carved into the center stone. If you share her Arcana or are The Emperor or Justice, Solvunn mages will approach and ask you to write your name in charcoal into the stone. If you bear any of the other signs, you can also do so, but you won't be asked directly.
Preparation
Soon, a hush falls over the crowd as Isar Hart comes forward with a black sheep in tow. Several Solvunn Elders flank the sheep as it's placed before the altar. They paint large winding lines and runes on its wool and face. Winifred Bordeaux turns to the crowd. She states that the wrongs born of the commune are always made right by Solvunn's hands and seeks forgiveness. The gods may cast judgment as they see fit.

Mages begin a haunting chant in an ancient tongue. With a large bone knife, Winifred kneels next to the sheep and slices its throat. As warm blood flows over the ground, it fills each etched Arcana sigil. The sigils glow a faint red upon contact, and the grass around them withers and blackens. Once fully drained, the Elders carefully skin the sheep. Its organs are placed in jars as it is hollowed out. With the skin removed, the Elders lay it on the altar and declare that those who stray from the gods must be brought back into the fold.

One of the stones vibrates, releasing Josselyn Creed into the hands of waiting Elders. As she's dragged to the altar's center, she decries Solvunn for being blind, accusing them of turning away from the truth. The old ways have long stopped serving them, she declares. The Old Gods are no longer listening.
Penance
Holding her in place, Rowan March places the skin of the black sheep upon her. The wool stretches outward to envelop her limbs, covering every part of her in the pelt and muffling her shouts. As each bone bends and snaps loudly in the silence to take the form of a sheep, her body collapses with anguished cries. Finally, a mass of quivering wool and human sinew is left, the sheep's face ajar on her broken skull.

The chanting reaches a crescendo, then stops abruptly. The mist thickens, swirling towards the altar. Your surroundings darken. From the gloom comes a massive bird-like silhouette. Its enormous wings shadow the sky, blocking out the sun. Though the figure's form is obscured, the dozens of vultures that descend are visible - and so is the feast that ensues.

Through the fog and shadow, you glimpse blood and flesh tearing. Slowly, the mist begins to clear as each bird takes its fill. The silhouette above withdraws. What remains before you is a pile of bones picked clean...and the recognizable head of Josselyn Creed beneath the sheep's mask, the only part of her uneaten.
Immolation
The Council allows all in attendance to confirm Josselyn's identity and her fate, ensuring that the factions and the Summoned are satisfied with the outcome. A ritual fire lights up on the altar. Her head is placed in first by one of the Elders.

The rest of her bones are in the sheepskin. No blood or flesh remains. The pelt is startlingly clean for such a gory display. You're invited to paint your Arcana on a bone and place the bone into the fire as a gesture to the gods that you've accepted the punishment they chose for her.

The atmosphere is solemn. Winifred offers her thanks on behalf of the Council for allowing Solvunn to make amends for Josseyn's misdeeds. They deeply regret this was necessary but promise they'll take steps to ensure it never happens again.

A few remain to watch her bones finish burning. You may join them if you like or return home at once. A harsh silence fills the ceremonial grounds as you step through the portal.

Weekend Gala
Several days after the execution, the cities prepare for the feast and gala. On the day of, portals will open up in the main hub of each city: Castle Thorne in Thorne, the Primary Settlement in Solvunn, and Cadens in the Free Cities.

You're welcome to arrive on the first day or skip the speeches and arrive on the second day for the main dinner and event. Everyone will be sent home on the third day (April 23rd), though the factions would be happy if you'd like to volunteer to clean up and take down decorations before you go. Not to worry if you'd rather go home - they have plenty of staff and locals for the job.

Each city will provide a place for you to stay for the weekend. They'll choose their best inns for you, except Solvunn. Solvunn will offer a comfortable communal tent for all attendees to share.
Thorne (Hayle)
The first evening, the King and Queen will gather guests into a grand hall at Hayle University. The King formally welcomes and expresses Thorne's gratitude for everyone's safe return. He heralds the Summoned and those involved in the terrible incident for their fortitude and bravery. The Queen follows afterward, adding that she is glad justice has been served and that they can be assured Josselyn Creed can never harm anyone again. She acknowledges the formation of the Summoned Conclave and promises Thorne will always serve those who are steadfast in their loyalty.

In a rare moment, Ambrose Rhett and the Duchess, Anastasia Rhett, can be spotted standing side by side in the background. Jolene Sybell is also present. Ambrose, however, will not be seen past the welcoming speech, returning to the Castle after.
Gifts
As a resident of Thorne, you'll receive a gift bag containing:
◎ A sweet dream potion that grants the user happy dreams and a good night's sleep. A basic spell, these potions were made by schoolchildren in Hayle as a thank-you gift for the Summoned. The custom label on each bottle has your name handwritten and decorated by the kids. If you're known around the Castle, it might contain a drawing that represents your reputation - for example, a flower if you have a green thumb. They've been told a bit about the Summoned by officials and their teachers.

◎ A jade turtle that, when placed in a bowl or pool of water, is enchanted to swim around. A novel decorative piece that calls back to the giant sea turtle which came to aid you and your friends on Thorne's shores.

◎ A soothing galaxy orb that displays the starry night sky within. When placed in front of some light, it'll cast a pretty sparkle over your surroundings.
Surroundings
Located far north, Hayle is most famous for its beautiful crystalline architecture. The weather is warmer now that spring has arrived, but relatively cool with temperatures dipping at night. Vast mountains are in the distance for a breathtaking view.

Hayle bustles with vibrant energy and a diverse population. Where Castle Thorne closely follows the formal traditions of the nobility and traditional Academic Magic, Hayle is trendier with innovative spellwork, the newest designs in fashion, and a vast library of knowledge.
◎ Arcana Deck Exhibit
Expensive custom-crafted Arcana decks are under glass cases like fine jewels. One notable attraction is an exhibit displaying one-of-a-kind decks designed by famous artists or enchanted by renowned mages in Thorne's history. Some boast intricately painted designs and real gold, while others use precious gems embedded in the cards themselves. One preserved deck is carved entirely on pinewood.

◎ Boutiques
Boutiques sell tailored clothes and fine jewelry that include Arcana-inspired accessories. Luxury magical tools are also available such as gold scales for weighing potion ingredients. Some bookshops specialize in signed or antique copies. The contents are nothing special, but editions are considered collectibles. Though most aren't for sale except to the wealthiest individuals, you're free to look.

◎ Makeover & Performers
Street performers occupy every corner around Hayle: stories told through illusions, musician-less instruments, and juggling acts that incorporate impressive balls of colorful light. You can get your portrait drawn by an enchanted paintbrush or volunteer for one of the illusionists to give you a temporary "makeover." The makeover will grant you one or more features of your choosing that will last 24 hours: a new hair or eye color (including unnatural shades!), translucent illusory wings (they won't get in the way), or decorative nails.

Personal shopping and styling assistance is also offered by Lenore and Natasha Romanoff.
Banquet
The banquet takes place on the second evening, held in Hayle University's finest ballroom. Decorations are delicate and elegant. The chandelier above drips with crystals and gold.

Although you'll have an assigned seat to start with, there's no need to stay where you are. Guests are encouraged to mingle and wander around. Make friends, meet new people, and introduce yourselves!
◎ Food & Drink
A formal multi-course dinner will be served throughout the night. The wine flows freely and food is abundant. Thorne is known for its exquisite cuisine, and Hayle is no different. With the harsh winter over and farmlands slowly recovering from the attack last summer, the nation is no longer struggling as much with supplies. Dishes include stuffed duck, delicate fish, rare nutty cheeses, soup, and plenty of cakes and biscuits.

◎ Entertainment
Formal entertainment involves music, dancing, and magic shows. You're welcome to take the stage yourself, of course! If you're not good at what you do, the citizens won't boo you off the stage, but you'll feel an awkward atmosphere begin to build, and word might spread about your act. The nobility in Thorne has exacting standards and a penchant for gossip.

Musical performances include original compositions on the violin and piano by Lestat de Lioncourt and elvish songs by Elrond, while Lord John Grey will recite some poetry and music. Magical displays include illusory lights featuring the Arcana signs by Istredd, flashy divination magicks channeled through a tarot deck by Urianger, and a light-based display of intricate mandalas Stephen Strange - whose third eye may be glimpsed beneath his hood when he casts his Eldritch magic.

◎ Night's End
The banquet runs late into the night, though you can leave any time. A carriage will be waiting to take you back to your inn. You can stay for one last social breakfast in the morning before returning to Castle Thorne through the portal.
Free Cities (Libertas)
The first evening, the Prime Minister will gather guests by the mosaic sculpture in the Willow Memorial Park. Prime Minister Marlo expresses her gratitude for everyone's safe return and apologizes for the atrocities that occurred under her watch. The bravery and fortitude of those involved will be remembered. Fortunately, justice has found those responsible, and the city can begin to march forward. She acknowledges the formation of the Summoned Conclave, promising that her government will make sure nothing like this ever happens again to its people. The Summoned are, of course, people of the Free Cities regardless of where they came from.

Quilleth Kaur takes the stand afterward, addressing the tragedy that struck Libertas not long ago and personally thanking the Summoned for their help in rescuing survivors and rebuilding the city. This includes the construction of the park itself, led by two of the Free Cities' longest Summoned residents. She bids everyone to enjoy the festivities. They deserve to relax and feast after a harrowing experience.
Gifts
As a resident of the Free Cities, you'll receive a gift basket containing:
Tickets to a special comeback show by one of Libertas' most famous acrobatic troupes - their first since the city's destruction. The envelope includes a letter which addresses you by name and thanks you for your help. If you've made an impression on the citizens of Libertas, the letter will mention noteworthy things you've contributed, such as volunteer efforts or donations. The tickets grant you the best seats in the house and a free drink during intermission. Performances are held throughout April and May, so you'll have plenty of time to attend.

◎ A kazoo, best used to annoy your friends or heckle anyone you find disagreeable, though beware that the people of Libertas won't hesitate to brawl on the street over insults.

◎ Luxurious bath crystal balls that fizzle and give the water a beautiful shimmer. Infused with medicinal properties, they'll alleviate aching muscles and lingering pains.
Surroundings
Located far south, Libertas is most famous for its subversive attitude and colorful architecture. With winter on the way out, the weather is warm but not scorching hot as it can be in the summer. Rare spring rains have caused flowers to bloom and sprout around the desert.

Libertas is diverse and lax in social norms. Where Cadens boasts the best research and technology, Libertas' focus is on advancements in free thought, art, and knowledge. Following the art walk not long ago and the long-term portal to Libertas, some of these attitudes have filtered into Cadens.
◎ Artist Alleys
The collapse of the city's buildings has caused street art to greatly flourish. Winding alleyways between homes and shops contain paintings, written poetry on the walls, and musical performances. Sculptor Axn Kade, famous for his pieces made of reclaimed metal and his activism for mining safety, has added a new sculpture to the city's streets. The plaque contains a dedication to the Summoned who helped clean up the mining equipment a few months ago, having used the scrap metal gathered during that process.

◎ Gambling Halls & Brews
Rejecting government oversight, Libertas is home to several gambling halls of all types. If you have the money, you're sure to find a spot to suit you. Beware of loan sharks and play at your own risk. Taverns around Libertas are rowdy. They often have an open floor for art performances, poetry readings, and philosophical debates. Always open to new ideas, many places in Libertas host tastings for brews created using innovative flavors and techniques.

◎ Market Square
Though not as large as Aquila's market, the Libertas market square is still a sprawling maze. Anyone with something to sell will have squeezed a table or a stall into the area. Enterprising merchants will give you a demonstration of some of their products, most powered by New Magic: a comb that changes your hair color upon use, eye drops that give your irises an enchanting colorful glow, and disposable crystal accessories that take on the illusion of precious jewels for a short period - invented to undermine the value of gems. Any changes to your appearance are temporary, lasting 24 hours.

Before the feast, simple dance lessons are available from Caitlyn Kiramman.
Garden Feast
The feast takes place on the second evening, held at the Willow Memorial Park. Glowing orbs of light have been hung from the willow trees while vases made by a local potter feature flowers from the park's wildflower meadows. More details about the park are available under Locales for Libertas.

Provided by Viktor (and Jayce Talis), the center of the garden contains a revolving armillary sphere modeled after the astronomy of Abraxas, casting an atmospheric starry light over the area.

To start with, you'll pull your table number from a hat to receive your "assigned" seat, but there's no need to stay there all night. Guests are encouraged to mingle and wander around. Make friends, meet new people, and introduce yourselves!
◎ Food & Drink
An eclectic array of dishes line a large table at the park's center. Help yourself to what you like in any order. No one will bother you if you start with dessert! Wine, ales, and hard liquors are as plentiful as the food. Dishes include grilled fish and pork, dips and spreads, puddings, sweetbread, cakes, and seasonal fruits common to the desert climate, such as figs and oranges.

◎ Entertainment
Formal entertainment involves music, dancing, and poetry. Artists have been invited to unveil new pieces or showcase old favorites. You're welcome to take the stage yourself, of course! Performers won't be judged on talent so much as passion. As long as you're creative and genuinely enjoy your craft, you'll have the support of the locals.

Jaskier will put on a lute performance, including a ballad of Spyndlveiss containing themes related to the recent disappearances. Diana Prince will recite a short portion of The Iliad, in both Ancient Greek and common. A "blade dancing" display using a painted stave by Obi-wan Kenobi will take place, as well. Finally, Hilda Goneril will draw and paint quick "fashion sketches" to commemorate everyone's style - available to both small groups and individuals.

◎ Night's End
The feast runs late into the night, though you can leave any time. A wagon is available to bring you back to your inn, but most locals prefer to walk, creating a drunken parade of people through the streets while singing cheerfully. You can stay for one last social breakfast in the morning before returning to Cadens through the portal.
Solvunn (Primary Settlement)
The first evening, the two remaining members of the Council, along with Isar Hart, address the gathered, apologizing for the sheep who strayed from their flock. They're especially disappointed with the heretical actions of a trusted community member, whose name they will no longer acknowledge. The gods have cast their judgment, and now the community can come together to heal. The Council promises the newly formed Summoned Conclave that they are vital members of the commune and that Solvunn is here to aid them in whatever they need.

Isar Hart reiterates that his position on the Council is temporary until the seat can be filled, though the Council does not give a date for when this might occur.
Gifts
As a member of the Solvunn Commune, you'll receive a gift bag containing:
◎ A clay mug, handmade by children in the settlements. Each mug is customized for the individual based on what the children have managed to learn about you, painted with what they believe to be your favorite colors, flowers, patterns, or animals. How accurate the kids are about you varies depending on your interactions with them, but they've tried their best. The bottom of the mug is signed by the child who made it for you. If you run into them afterward, they might ask if you like your mug.

◎ Thick and comfortable knitted socks made from the wool of Isar Hart's sheep farm.

◎ A few sachets of herbal teas to help you get a good night's rest and restore your energy. A small thank-you note accompanies the teas, signed by Lorelai and Esmond, who are grateful for the chance to return home.
Surroundings
The southernmost of the settlements, the Secondary Settlement boasts vast sprawling farmlands and a beautiful shoreline overlooking the ocean. Skies are sunny and clear throughout the gathering. Wildflowers bloom across the flat plains, orchards are starting to bear fruit, and fish are plentiful once more.

The Secondary Settlement is sparsely populated but maintains a tight-knit community. Where the Primary Settlement is a hub for schooling, craftspeople, and artisans, the Secondary Settlement is focused on agriculture and livestock: sheep, goats, horses, and fields of crops fill the area. Many families take pride in supplying the commune with produce and materials like wool, eggs, milk, and grains.
◎ Farms & Livestock
Farms are open with fences solely to keep out any predators or pests. You're free to visit the fields and orchards. Pick apricots and cherries, pet the sheep, play with the baby goats, and gather eggs for the evening's potluck. Isar Hart will be pleased to show you his prized black sheep, whose majestic horns are greatly admired. Smaller gardens filled with flowers and herbs are also available to explore. If you'd like to put together bouquets for the evening or make flower wreaths to decorate, you can help yourself. Finally, you can fish to your heart's content in the nearby pond. Bring your catch to dinner!

◎ Shrines
After recent events, shrines around the Secondary Settlement are full of offerings to appease the gods and seek guidance. These offerings consist of animal bones, harvested fruit, and wine. You can add to the shrines if you like or simply visit them. Many shrines hum with magical energy and all previous signs of corruption over the past few weeks have faded. You can ask for blessings of health, luck, or abundance for yourself or others.

◎ Neighborly Help
Although Solvunn doesn't place much emphasis on extravagance, the evening's affair is an important one. They'd like to look their best. Members of the commune are all around the settlement to give you a hand to get ready. You can have someone style or braid your hair with ribbons, color it with natural dyes, or lend you some clothes and accessories if you don't have any. You can help them in return, as well. They're also happy to trade items with you.

Louis de Pointe du Lac will temporarily alter your clothes or appearance for the night using illusory magic.
Potluck
The potluck takes place on the second evening, held outdoors in one of the Secondary Settlement's spring meadows. Decorations are rustic and simple, consisting of fresh flowers and candles.

Mud-clay sculptures and masks are available from Nanaue, though they are not very sturdy. Nero will hand out colorful brochures.

There are no assigned seats. Tables and chairs are placed tightly together, along with natural seating created by tree stumps and boulders. You're encouraged to mingle and wander around. Though a sober hush lies over the gathering, the atmosphere is hopeful. The people of Solvunn look forward to better days.
◎ Food & Drink
Solvunn's potluck feast consists of dishes and drinks brought by everyone in the commune, including members of the Council. There are hearty stews and soups, freshly baked bread, butter churned that very morning, and a variety of Solvunn's famous goat cheeses. You're invited to contribute anything you like! Simply add your dish or dessert to the table. The centerpiece of the potluck is a pig roast. Mead and ale flow freely.

Wanda Maximoff will bring sečenica, propeć (both cheese and egg savory baked goods), and traditional fruit pies of plums, cherries, sugar, almonds, and vanilla sugar. Claire Fraser will provide a unique loose-leaf herbal tea blend.

◎ Entertainment
The people of Solvunn will sing, dance, and make music together. On occasion, there are pauses for someone to take the spotlight, but overall no one's center stage for long. Instruments are passed around, and guests are encouraged to join in. Due to recent events, many songs are subdued, speaking of honoring the gods. Later in the night, stories are exchanged around the campfires. One particular folktale is told by Rowan March about Spyndlveiss, a figure who captures wayward sheep on their way between the settlements. From these lost sheep, he makes sheepskin suits for hungry wolves to wear.

Eddie Munson will hold a lively musical performance.

◎ Night's End
The potluck runs late into the night, though you can leave any time. Large tents are nearby for you to rest and spend the night. In the morning, you can join in on the communal breakfast before returning through the portal to the Primary Settlement.

Gala & Performance

[personal profile] obiwanofthosedays 2023-04-20 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
The Performance

After some shopping for proper attire, Obi-Wan makes the trip to Libertas and offers what is, in his mind, an entirely appropriate contribution to the festivities. Finding and preparing a painted stave to act in place of a lightsaber is simple enough, as is preparing a modest pile of small bags filled with sand for a portion of his demonstration. Blindfolded throughout he replicates one of many intense, acrobatic katas, the painted stave twirling in his hand to the beat of drums in intricate patterns, diverting blows both imagined and real. At one point in the demonstration he does signal for those that lined up to toss the bags of sand at him to do so with all their might- and he diverts them neatly, even while blindfolded.

A show of grace, athleticism, and truly- it is fun to show off a little what he is capable of with very low stakes. There is no battle that requires perfect focus, no barrage of blaster fire, merely music and laughter and the sheer comfortable relief of being alive, having survived something terrible.

And for now? That is enough.

Dancing

After his demonstration, Obi-Wan takes a moment to drink, observe, and learn the beats and rhythms of the dances common to this world. Quite a few of them are familiar enough for him to catch on to the appropriate motions and once he feels comfortable doing so? He dives in with enthusiasm- glad to relax and to meet others that are enjoying the music and the evening. He even goes far enough to coax a few wall flowers away from the edges of the dance floor, inviting them with a twirl of his cape, a wink, and a smile.

dancing!

Cas watched Obi-Wan's blade dance from the crowd, enthralled like the rest of them with the grace and seamless skill. It was a moment of joy and admiration, in the midst of anxiety he's spent stalking this gala for any sign of his missing friend. He'd seen the wonderfully choreographed fights in the films, but it still pales in comparison to the real thing. Everything about knowing Obi-Wan here, he's found, makes the fictions seem flat and one dimensional, the man himself has a much greater depth and spirit to him.

Which is what makes protesting Obi-Wan's urging onto the dance floor so difficult, when he comes to pull Cas up from his little observation perch at the furthest back table, where he could view the whole area.

"No, Obi-wan, thank you, I'm just— I'm really not suited for it."

Angels fight, they fly, they do all kinds of complex coordination with or without physical forms, but dance has never been an element of their culture. Nonetheless, Obi-wan's very difficult to say no to, and Castiel's dragged along into the crowd reluctantly. Someone did managed to squish him into slightly fancier clothes, which Cas immediately covered with a heavy, oversized tan trench coat, but somewhere in the shuffle, the coat's left behind on his sentry chair, Cas watching it mournfully from a distant.

"I hope at least you know what we're doing."

here we go!

"Nonsense-" Under normal circumstances he might not be half so forward- but under normal circumstances he wouldn't have had half as much wine, spirit unburdened by the weight of responsibility and respectability expected of a Jedi. The word means nothing to the people here and as alienating as it can be? On occasion it's quite liberating. So he may have had a glass or two too many. Not enough to cause trouble but enough to bring warmth to his cheeks and a glimmer of mischief to his eyes as he gently but firmly coaxes Castiel out onto the floor. "You've been by yourself all night and you simply must dance at least once, and if I'm the only one brave enough to ask, than ask I shall-"

Ask, insist- Bantha, Bontha.

What matters less is the why and more the what- to be very fair to Castiel he'd attempted to drag him to the floor during one of the simpler dances, a spirited spinning rondo, but by the time they've made their way to the floor something a little more heated, though no less spirited, winds it's way through the air. "Of course I know what we're doing- it's not all that different from...I forget what it's called, but the steps aren't quite that difficult. Follow my footwork, as though advancing in a duel. I'll handle the rest."

This particular brand of music calls for a closer embrace than the other dance, but Obi-Wan guides Castiel's hands in position on his shoulder, hand in hand, his free palm settled at the dip of his waist as they stand, chest to chest. This close his warm chuckle is palpable, finger counting the beat in gentle taps against Castiel's hand. "Trust me. I'll make certain we look like we belong."

Depleted Grace has meant many changes for Castiel, dragging him along a sliding scale from angel towards human. He sleeps now, he eats, he bathes. He feels much more vibrantly, psychosomatically, emotion finding places within his body to tense or ease. His vessel makes decisions and reactions outside his control for the first time in a while, since he’d been completely human.

When Obi-wan pulls him in close, chest brushing, and the gentle, warm breeze on his laughter tickles at Castiel’s neck, the shell of his ear. his body shoots an involuntary tingle along his skin, goosebumps sneaking along his shoulders and back. Cas isn’t often this close to others, not for extended periods of time, and this sensation is rare - but one he recognizes. The last time, it’d been with April, but that’s clearly not what’s happening here, despite some couples on the dancefloor eager to press closer together than seems necessary.

“I’m less concerned about how we look than I am crushing your toes underfoot.”

The angel clears his throat, back straightened to proper posture. He finds the dip between muscle on Obi-wan’s shoulder to rest his hand, and takes to the task like a mission. Too proud to shy from a challenge, and too annoyed to find himself bad at things, he's committed to success. Head at a curious, analyzing tilt, Cas glances away to the surrounding dancers to observe the steps (and to diffuse a measure of the unasked for biological reaction creeping up on him). The tap at his hand, scant inches between them, and shifting muscle at Obi-wan's shoulder and torso are enough to inform him how and when the Jedi's moving. Grace or not, his reactions are quick and he learns fast. Only steps on Obi-wan's feet a couple times, which he mutters sheepish apology for.

Once Cas feels he has the pattern down, he shifts his gaze from observing surroundings to locking with Obi-wan's eyes, holding there for a lengthy quiet that's in no rush to be filled. It's rare Castiel truly feels the awkwardness he seems to project, and the uncomfortably intense, prolonged eye contact is kind of his thing. If it feels like he's examining your soul through your eyes, it's because he is. Obi-wan is a curiosity of a man to him - a product of such a strictly ascetic lifestyle, yet here, tipsy and bouncing around on a dancefloor like giddy youth, pulling the unsuspecting anti-socials into the jovial wave with him. How endearing. Cas wonders, briefly, what he might've been like without the Jedi in his life.

"Was dance included in Jedi instruction, or did you learn elsewhere?"

"I've sturdy boots for a reason, don't worry." Murmuring while tucked close is second nature, he's lost track of how often a dance at a gala was the only opportunity to exchange information during more delicate negotiations throughout the years. Becoming versed in etiquette and diplomatic overtures was a requirement of any seasoned Jedi Knight; and while all those skills are not applicable in this moment? Adaptability and dexterity certainly assist in guiding Castiel through the steps of this dance. Steady and somewhat sensual (potentially, but they're far too light and faintly fumbling in a way he finds more endearing than anything else to truly be seen as such), Obi-Wan leads his partner across the floor.

Deftly weaving around the other couples, laughing off the slight missteps as Castiel focuses in and picks up the nuances of the footwork, warm and solid almost as stone, steady. Once they're both certain, Obi-Wan allows his awareness in the Force to prevent them from turning into anyone else, from being bumped into or cut off. The intensity of this angel's gaze is-

Not unsettling, nor is it awkward, not to him. He is not human in the way he appears to be and that makes these oddities acceptable. Blue meets blue flecked with green, Obi-Wan's own expression utterly serene, his soul buoyant and thrumming with simple joy- of movement, of community, of communion with another soul similar to his own. "Yes and no. Diplomacy is of great import to our cause as negotiators, and I've picked up more than a few courtly dances in my time."

A pivot, a step in and past Castiel, pulling him in close as he twists until he's standing behind, hand on his hip, other on his palm to guide him through a reverse embrace- lips by his ear, voice palpable with how his chest is pressed to Castiel's spine. "This particular variation is popular in a great many artistic planets, usually played later in the evening after there's been a great deal of wine imbibed and couples are feeling more- amorous? With the close embraces required it makes for an excellent opportunity to discuss delicate matters plainly, especially with the rest of the attendees distracted."

Another line of music, another pivot as he murmurs "lean back, trust me-"

One hand skims up to clasp Castiel by the nape of the neck, guiding him backward in a dip- held steady for all his weight and catching him neatly as he drops, guiding him back up with a nudge of Force to help him down and back up with a measure of grace. Once back in position he nods, proud. "Very well done. You're a quick study, my friend."

The angel's laser focused on improving his execution of this human tradition. Once he's taken a task on, he's stubbornly committed to seeing it through, and he's always had a petulant streak that's indignantly unsatisfied when bad at something. Regardless of how thoroughly Dean Winchester may point out he's out of his depth (maybe even because of it).

He listens to Obi-wan explain, holding his eyes, except when he fumbles and casts a grouchy frown down at his feet, like they've personally offended him. Though his dance partner's light-hearted chuckling does lift some of his severity, a hint of a smile curving at the corner of Castiel's lips. There's an honest and uncomplicated joy to the man that's infectious, difficult to deny. It softens the anxiety to do it right, and relaxes Cas into taking guidance by the rhythm, and his companion, allowing the grasp on control to loosen. This isn't Sam, Dean or Jo, acutely aware of his distant and recent history and woes. He isn't saving lives or thwarting evil here, he's just stepping about in metered patterns, enjoying the warmth and reassurance of human contact. It's fun.

And then the tone shifts, and Obi-wan slips behind him somewhere, Cas tracking his position through the hand on his hip, the radiating heat from the Jedi's chest flush to Castiel's back. This is... different. Synapses spark up and fire along old neural pathways, be it pheromones or a hypersensitive, nearly atrophied base human instinct reacting to the stimuli of intimate contact with another body. The whisper at his ear, brush of Obi-wan's lips, and warm air danced across his neck triggers sensitive nerve endings, that tingling, electric pulse creeping back again. Castiel did not wake up this day prepared to be sensually spooned mid-tango in the middle of a swanky festival, with Jedi Master Obi-wan Kenobi's voice deep and rich at ear, vibrating against his back, while whispering clandestine diplomatic strategy. Perhaps George Lucas was just unskilled in writing subtly, gracefully, probably unintentionally alluring men, but he doesn't remember this in the films. He won't be thrown by it, and continues on, trusting Obi-wan's instruction.

"I see. It's a clever tactic, hiding your affairs in plain sight with others distracted. I've noticed the, um. Amorosity." Amory? Amorousness? Human languages are silly, but there are already several other dancing couples clearly needing to be bonked and sent to horny jail in the crowd. They somehow gracefully stroll through, without nudging or bumping another soul, however distracted they are by hormones and an intoxicated lack of inhibition. He leans when told to, curious but trusting. When Cas feels an invisible force at his shoulders and chest, easing him down, helping a knee to bend just so, the other to stretch, and gently lifting him back into the Jedi's embrace, he has a distinct suspicion Obi-wan's responsible for their unfettered path.

"Thank you." Perhaps the intimacy and sensation are simply part of the practice, something meant to go along, enrich, and motivate the dance. As he grows more sure of the steps, Cas decides to loosen his grip on policing his vessel. Let it do what it will, he can't control it much at this point anyway. After a while, he's observed some more complicated moves from other dancers, and decides to be a bit more involved. As they finish one sequence, Cas lifts their hands to twirl Obi-wan under his arm, the hand on his shoulder guiding him through, before pulling him back in, solidly flushed to his chest, with voice hushed between them. "What delicate matters do you propose we discuss with this dance?"

"Pair that with the fact that a great many beings assume we do not drink, swear, or engage in frivolity due to the nature of our connection to the Force and our vocation; it can provide an excellent opportunity to...tease the local politicians." To say he's above using those assumptions to his advantage or shocking the opposition by being distinctly unruffled in situations that call for cultural exchanges or dances like this would be quite untrue. One uses every tool in their kit to ensure a mission is successful, and the more means Obi-Wan has on hand to do so without having to resort to violence? The better. Though it's difficult to think of those missions and moments while in the middle of teaching someone that learns things very quickly, adapts mid movement, and matches him stride for stride.

It almost brings to mind sparring with Anakin, though there's ever that disparity in experience and intention. With Castiel? Despite his unfamiliarity he's cottoned on to the vibe more or less instantly.

Considering he's a vibration of celestial intent riding a willing, limiting host, the notion prompts another quiet huff of laughter at his own internal joke while he steps through the spin, turning in until they're close. Elbow high, eyes locked, Lips a breath apart Obi-Wan hums. "I suppose we could discuss whether or not you've had much success in looking for your friend? Or- if you were among the number that were kidnapped? Because I spoke to one of those that were in the pit and he had a most troubling vision he shared with me."

Which is, well. Both delicate, heavy, and something that might ruin the pleasant evening- but he hasn't heard anything of anyone else having similar visions- or at least if they had? They weren't talking about it. If Castiel knew others and was better known among the Summoned, perhaps he knew more? Or could find answers.

His grip and weight shifts, turning them in a pivot, guiding Castiel down into a mutual lunge to avoid the passing arms of a flailing couple going at it with no little vigor, brow quirked at their 'Amorocity', as Castiel so neatly put it.

"Alternatively we can leave that morbid business for another time and you could explain why you looked so plaintively at the worn tan garment you'd left behind on a chair when I invited you to dance?"

Dancing

Crane leans against the wall, fixing his tie while watching the floor, feet shuffling in discomfort. His eyes track the dancers as they waltz and tango in unfamiliar patterns. Can this even be called a disco? He doesn't care to know. He hangs back from each invitation that comes his way, shaking his head and apologising with a smile. He dislikes the thought people only want to dance because his appearance draws them over.

So he denies locals and foreigners alike. The latest invite has him sliding his fingers into his pockets.

"Sorry. I've been drinking and hardly wish to make a fool of myself."

He hasn't been drinking. He's just trying to be polite about saying no.

"I've been drinking and hardly wish to make a fool of you-" Obi-Wan's smile gentles, hand extended still, though the weight of expectation does diminish slightly. "You cannot be so uncoordinated as all that."

Tall, trim, steady- he's seen worse potential partners for a turn- and nothing in the man's bearing truly implies he's liable to trip over his own feet or step on Obi-Wan's. But there's a niggling notion in the air that has his eyes narrowing faintly in consideration before he ducks his head with a laugh.

"Ah, but if you've no desire to do so, who am I to force the point. Perhaps I ought to take a breather myself."

"Perhaps. We wouldn't want you tripping over your own two feet."

Instead of somebody else's? Not quite. There is pleasure and excitement in both scenarios, each providing a different sense of satisfaction than the other. He narrows his own eyes, distrusting that open hand of friendship before making room. Reserved. Reclusive. Restraining himself from becoming a spectacle. He taps the wall with his hand, encouraging the man to join him.

But he does shuffle a little to make himself some room.

"Oh I'm not so deep into my cups for that to be a concern. It'd take a great deal more to make that manner of fool out of me." Said lightly, breezily as he accepts the unspoken invitation, careful to retain a respectable distance between himself and this reserved individual. Simply because he was of the mind everyone should take advantage of the opportunity to indulge in freedom of movement without thorough scrutiny does not mean everyone is of that opinion.

All the same- there is not so much space that he can help the brushing of their shoulders, though Obi-Wan does what he can to not be so intrusive. "Have you found anyone particularly interesting?"

Hanging on a wall means people watching- and the observations of others has always been a quiet fascination of Obi-Wan's.

Conversations and revelry. Both obscure the murmur forced from his lips, his shoulder recoiling in gentle fashion. He attempts to redirect his energy into being productive. Hands clasp together and flatten his stomach. Prim, proper, graceful and poised. He lifts his chin and looks across the dancefloor.

"No. I think everybody is interesting."

Being a scholar of the mind, there is opportunity to learn from everyone inside the crowd. He laughs lightly at some novel joke. All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.

"Though some are more interesting than others." He gestures a hand. "Not that I intend rudeness. We are all different people; naturally we gravitate towards personalities that match."

Ergo, some are indeed more interesting than others.

[personal profile] obiwanofthosedays 2023-04-26 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Then I suppose I ought to clarify and ask if you've found anyone more interesting than most." Contrary to finding the statement rude- Obi-Wan huffs a faint laugh; as the inherent diplomacy in the statement reminds him a great deal of more than one of his colleagues on the Council. "Especially considering the sheer array of personalities and perspectives to be found in attendance."

The Locals are no monolith. A unique spectrum of temperaments and convictions, meeting and learning their opinions has provided quite a bit of background for his understanding of this world so far.

But opinions on those opinions? Leave him somewhat curious.

post-performance

[personal profile] aquilus 2023-04-24 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Altaïr watches much of the entertainment at the event, some of it only because there's little else to do at the moment that doesn't involve clouding his mind with drink. Obi-Wan's performance captures his attention, though, and he watches much of the demonstration with a keen, interested eye.

Later on, he doesn't specifically seek the man out, but when he finds the stirring of the crowds has put them close to one another, he takes the opportunity to catch his eye and nod in greeting.

"Impressive work onstage earlier," he says. "You're not only trained for stage combat, are you." It isn't really a question.
obiwanofthosedays: (15)

[personal profile] obiwanofthosedays 2023-04-24 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"To be truthful-" Obi-Wan buys himself a moment of consideration by finishing his glass of wine, taking in the man's bearing and demeanor and finding...it remarkably similar to that of the Jedi Shadows. Alert, focused, intense gaze-

Which would for anyone else perhaps make the line of inquiry a concern but as Quinlan Vos is a dear friend and Shadows have their own role in the order? Obi-Wan merely smiles as he sets his goblet aside. "Even that demonstration wasn't 'stage combat'. The blade for the dance in question is different than anything that can be made here, but for the purpose of an...exhibition, I suppose, a painted stave seemed most appropriate."
aquilus: (pic#9513276)

[personal profile] aquilus 2023-04-28 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
That definitely catches his attention; Altaïr has a hard time imagining a blade that can't be made here, but the man seems certain.

"Jayce and Viktor make impressive weapons, I wouldn't count them out," he says. "But I take your point. Best to keep it safe for the sake of demonstration — though from what I saw, you wouldn't have any trouble maintaining control."

It does make him wonder how he trained, and who he used such skills against. But those are not questions for having just met.

"Discipline and control are two of the core tenets of my order, in or out of combat. Though honestly, we try to avoid armed conflict as much as possible. To paraphrase a friend of mine- hands are only thrown once words fail." A pity Quinlan was ever too quick to actually throw hands rather than talk things through.

"I'll keep those names in mind. It is somewhat...unnerving to walk around without my saber, but there's nothing for it. We were summoned here with nothing, I don't suppose there's a way to regain anything from our homes, is there?" Not that he's heard of, not just yet.

"No one has discovered one yet. I don't know whether that means it's impossible or that those with the ability choose not to do it."

Altaïr can understand and sympathize with the feeling of being largely unarmed. It's why he'd moved to change that at the first opportunity.

Other concerns have more of his attention at the moment, though. "Your friend sounds like a thoughtful person. What sort of order are you from?" He regards him with curiosity. "You don't look like a monk."

[personal profile] obiwanofthosedays 2023-04-29 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"We aren't monks precisely, at least not as most people in the Republic consider them to be- we're not so limited as often assumed, but we do abide by the Jedi Code and work to protect peace and justice throughout the galaxy. Before the war, a great deal of our work was done as diplomats, mediating as a neutral third party in political or social conflicts, or extending relief and aid to planets savaged by illness or famine." They are small, compared to the rest of the Galaxy, but they do what they can for as many as they are able within the Republic.

And outside, as best they can, without breaking intergalactic law or treaties.

Dancing

[personal profile] nadine_he_loves 2023-04-25 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Nadine is most certainly something of a wallflower in this situation. Despite her outfit being attention-drawing, she's just never been that much of a dancer. The activity was one of those things that's fun to watch and imagine, but in practice...

It's not like she'd had much opportunity for dancing most of her life.

And the walls that she'd kept up most of her life, walls so strong they were practically visible at a glance, have been lowered some. Her demeanor is no longer so unapproachable, so frosty. It's never been so apparent as tonight, when she keeps finding herself invited to dance. Though she declines the invitations of strangers politely but firmly, familiar faces are given more consideration.

It is flattering, in a way.

"Oh, I'm sure you could probably find a much more competent dance partner. I don't do it that often. You might be risking the safety of your toes."
obiwanofthosedays: (08)

[personal profile] obiwanofthosedays 2023-04-25 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
"How fortunate I've sturdy boots." Obi-Wan replies with a wide smile, hand extended still, cape swept low in a courtly bow. "We'll keep to the edges if that is more to your comfort, but I cannot in good conscious allow a lady to while away a gala without at least one dance. Humor me?"

Perhaps it may be underhanded to use his most winning of all smiles- ever aware that most beings find him at least passingly attractive for a human male of his age; but putting a little shine on something so harmless as a dance cannot truly cause any harm, could it?

Aside from the fact that Nadine has been a most gracious employer and ally in him finding his feet- she is lovely, and is fully deserving of a turn around the floor to feel flattered by positive attention.

[personal profile] nadine_he_loves 2023-04-25 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
"If you're sure your boots can take it..."

It is a gala, after all. Dancing is what's done. And Obi-Wan is handsome and charming. The attention's nice. And god knows it's only been recently she could accept or enjoy attention from men, even casually. Why not dance? And flirt a little, in that harmless way that people do.

Jaskier is always encouraging her to.

So she gathers up her feathered, fluttering skirts with one hand and takes his with her other.

"As long as we keep it simple. I'm more the stand and sway kind of girl. But I'm very good at that."

"I've no doubt." Obi-Wan guides her slowly out to the floor, the music slow and light, something close to an Alderannian Waltz for him to offer a gentle count of tapping fingers against her hand, his other delicately and politely at her waist. It's a simple enough pattern to guide her though, and his awareness extends across the floor to keep them from turning into any of the other couples. "I must say you look quite lovely tonight."

Because she does. Dressed well but more than that- "Joyful, unburdened."

"Thank you."

She can't help the light flush, it's just her natural reaction to compliments.

"I'm settling back into normal life. And with you and Cadfael helping with the plants and working in the clinic, I actually have something resembling free time again. It's nice."

Not to mention this evening she's had two drinks and indulged in her own herbal bounty. Which does make it easier to find the rhythm and follow Obi-Wan's steps. He's very good at leading, and his rather calm and kindly demeanor helps put her at ease.

"I've been told I work too much. There might be something to that."
obiwanofthosedays: (02)

[personal profile] obiwanofthosedays 2023-04-25 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Now that is something which which I have an unfortunate amount of experience." His chuckle is soft, his smile wry but- he refuses to have this moment of peace, of lively joy dimmed by thoughts of his overworked, overwrought past.

"Back home a great deal of my time was spent teaching, training, or in study. Having a proper occupation has done much to fill my days, but I still find myself unaccustomed to this much free time. For me it's- an adjustment. For you? I hope you are able to find something that brings you both joy and peace." For a balanced life is a serene, healthy life. Work and play, calm and harmless chaos both.
