MINI-EVENT: CODA - IC EVENT LOG

Mini-Event - Coda

Mid-April, you receive two formal invitations. They arrive separately in two distinct envelopes and do not appear to be precisely related.
◎ The first is from Solvunn, signed and sealed by the Solvunn Council. It informs the reader that on April 18th, Josselyn Creed's fate will be publicly carried out according to Solvunn's traditions with the Old Gods. The location is in neutral territory, a safe distance from the Singularity's crater. The Council expresses deep regret for the actions of one of their own and invites you to attend as an observer if you wish to find closure. Portals are provided. The proceedings will be in the morning.

◎ The second is from your respective faction. The letter is less solemn and invites you to attend a weekend gala on April 21st - 23rd. It acknowledges that recent times have been difficult and that faction officials and locals wish to repay the Summoned for their contributions. Portals to each location are provided.
Divine Judgment
In the weeks leading up to Josselyn Creed's execution, many of you were allowed to question Josselyn. Now that you've received the answers you're seeking - as much as you were able to - officials have granted you the chance to gain some closure and witness her execution.

The factions will warn the Summoned that Solvunn does not take angering the Gods lightly. Her death will not be quick and will likely be sacrificial. They advise anyone who may not have the stomach for it to remain home and enjoy the festivities at the end of the week.

Attending her execution is optional and open to all. New arrivals are welcome to watch...though they may not want to. All characters may skip this portion of the event.

Participants of Event #12 are still welcome to speak to Josselyn. This section will close on April 30th.
Last Rites
CW: Disturbing imagery, animal death, ritualistic sacrifice, body horror.

So that all can attend, Solvunn will perform Josselyn's last rites in neutral territory. Anyone who attended the Peace Summit last year will recognize the area, though the colorful tents are gone. In their place are some plain stone benches and a temporary altar. Thick mists roll into the valley, bringing a chill to the air. As you arrive, you see Solvunn mages instructing volunteers to right certain stones as the last touches are added. Present to represent the other two factions are Jolene Sybell of Thorne and Reva Hym of the Free Cities.

The stones are arranged in spiraling circles, with twelve arches that span them. Carved into the ground beneath the arches are each of the Major Arcana. Find your matching Arcana and leave an offering if you want. You're told the gesture will appease the gods and ensure the "cleansing" is successful.

The Moon, Josselyn Creed's Arcana, has been carved into the center stone. If you share her Arcana or are The Emperor or Justice, Solvunn mages will approach and ask you to write your name in charcoal into the stone. If you bear any of the other signs, you can also do so, but you won't be asked directly.
Preparation
Soon, a hush falls over the crowd as Isar Hart comes forward with a black sheep in tow. Several Solvunn Elders flank the sheep as it's placed before the altar. They paint large winding lines and runes on its wool and face. Winifred Bordeaux turns to the crowd. She states that the wrongs born of the commune are always made right by Solvunn's hands and seeks forgiveness. The gods may cast judgment as they see fit.

Mages begin a haunting chant in an ancient tongue. With a large bone knife, Winifred kneels next to the sheep and slices its throat. As warm blood flows over the ground, it fills each etched Arcana sigil. The sigils glow a faint red upon contact, and the grass around them withers and blackens. Once fully drained, the Elders carefully skin the sheep. Its organs are placed in jars as it is hollowed out. With the skin removed, the Elders lay it on the altar and declare that those who stray from the gods must be brought back into the fold.

One of the stones vibrates, releasing Josselyn Creed into the hands of waiting Elders. As she's dragged to the altar's center, she decries Solvunn for being blind, accusing them of turning away from the truth. The old ways have long stopped serving them, she declares. The Old Gods are no longer listening.
Penance
Holding her in place, Rowan March places the skin of the black sheep upon her. The wool stretches outward to envelop her limbs, covering every part of her in the pelt and muffling her shouts. As each bone bends and snaps loudly in the silence to take the form of a sheep, her body collapses with anguished cries. Finally, a mass of quivering wool and human sinew is left, the sheep's face ajar on her broken skull.

The chanting reaches a crescendo, then stops abruptly. The mist thickens, swirling towards the altar. Your surroundings darken. From the gloom comes a massive bird-like silhouette. Its enormous wings shadow the sky, blocking out the sun. Though the figure's form is obscured, the dozens of vultures that descend are visible - and so is the feast that ensues.

Through the fog and shadow, you glimpse blood and flesh tearing. Slowly, the mist begins to clear as each bird takes its fill. The silhouette above withdraws. What remains before you is a pile of bones picked clean...and the recognizable head of Josselyn Creed beneath the sheep's mask, the only part of her uneaten.
Immolation
The Council allows all in attendance to confirm Josselyn's identity and her fate, ensuring that the factions and the Summoned are satisfied with the outcome. A ritual fire lights up on the altar. Her head is placed in first by one of the Elders.

The rest of her bones are in the sheepskin. No blood or flesh remains. The pelt is startlingly clean for such a gory display. You're invited to paint your Arcana on a bone and place the bone into the fire as a gesture to the gods that you've accepted the punishment they chose for her.

The atmosphere is solemn. Winifred offers her thanks on behalf of the Council for allowing Solvunn to make amends for Josseyn's misdeeds. They deeply regret this was necessary but promise they'll take steps to ensure it never happens again.

A few remain to watch her bones finish burning. You may join them if you like or return home at once. A harsh silence fills the ceremonial grounds as you step through the portal.

Weekend Gala
Several days after the execution, the cities prepare for the feast and gala. On the day of, portals will open up in the main hub of each city: Castle Thorne in Thorne, the Primary Settlement in Solvunn, and Cadens in the Free Cities.

You're welcome to arrive on the first day or skip the speeches and arrive on the second day for the main dinner and event. Everyone will be sent home on the third day (April 23rd), though the factions would be happy if you'd like to volunteer to clean up and take down decorations before you go. Not to worry if you'd rather go home - they have plenty of staff and locals for the job.

Each city will provide a place for you to stay for the weekend. They'll choose their best inns for you, except Solvunn. Solvunn will offer a comfortable communal tent for all attendees to share.
Thorne (Hayle)
The first evening, the King and Queen will gather guests into a grand hall at Hayle University. The King formally welcomes and expresses Thorne's gratitude for everyone's safe return. He heralds the Summoned and those involved in the terrible incident for their fortitude and bravery. The Queen follows afterward, adding that she is glad justice has been served and that they can be assured Josselyn Creed can never harm anyone again. She acknowledges the formation of the Summoned Conclave and promises Thorne will always serve those who are steadfast in their loyalty.

In a rare moment, Ambrose Rhett and the Duchess, Anastasia Rhett, can be spotted standing side by side in the background. Jolene Sybell is also present. Ambrose, however, will not be seen past the welcoming speech, returning to the Castle after.
Gifts
As a resident of Thorne, you'll receive a gift bag containing:
◎ A sweet dream potion that grants the user happy dreams and a good night's sleep. A basic spell, these potions were made by schoolchildren in Hayle as a thank-you gift for the Summoned. The custom label on each bottle has your name handwritten and decorated by the kids. If you're known around the Castle, it might contain a drawing that represents your reputation - for example, a flower if you have a green thumb. They've been told a bit about the Summoned by officials and their teachers.

◎ A jade turtle that, when placed in a bowl or pool of water, is enchanted to swim around. A novel decorative piece that calls back to the giant sea turtle which came to aid you and your friends on Thorne's shores.

◎ A soothing galaxy orb that displays the starry night sky within. When placed in front of some light, it'll cast a pretty sparkle over your surroundings.
Surroundings
Located far north, Hayle is most famous for its beautiful crystalline architecture. The weather is warmer now that spring has arrived, but relatively cool with temperatures dipping at night. Vast mountains are in the distance for a breathtaking view.

Hayle bustles with vibrant energy and a diverse population. Where Castle Thorne closely follows the formal traditions of the nobility and traditional Academic Magic, Hayle is trendier with innovative spellwork, the newest designs in fashion, and a vast library of knowledge.
◎ Arcana Deck Exhibit
Expensive custom-crafted Arcana decks are under glass cases like fine jewels. One notable attraction is an exhibit displaying one-of-a-kind decks designed by famous artists or enchanted by renowned mages in Thorne's history. Some boast intricately painted designs and real gold, while others use precious gems embedded in the cards themselves. One preserved deck is carved entirely on pinewood.

◎ Boutiques
Boutiques sell tailored clothes and fine jewelry that include Arcana-inspired accessories. Luxury magical tools are also available such as gold scales for weighing potion ingredients. Some bookshops specialize in signed or antique copies. The contents are nothing special, but editions are considered collectibles. Though most aren't for sale except to the wealthiest individuals, you're free to look.

◎ Makeover & Performers
Street performers occupy every corner around Hayle: stories told through illusions, musician-less instruments, and juggling acts that incorporate impressive balls of colorful light. You can get your portrait drawn by an enchanted paintbrush or volunteer for one of the illusionists to give you a temporary "makeover." The makeover will grant you one or more features of your choosing that will last 24 hours: a new hair or eye color (including unnatural shades!), translucent illusory wings (they won't get in the way), or decorative nails.

Personal shopping and styling assistance is also offered by Lenore and Natasha Romanoff.
Banquet
The banquet takes place on the second evening, held in Hayle University's finest ballroom. Decorations are delicate and elegant. The chandelier above drips with crystals and gold.

Although you'll have an assigned seat to start with, there's no need to stay where you are. Guests are encouraged to mingle and wander around. Make friends, meet new people, and introduce yourselves!
◎ Food & Drink
A formal multi-course dinner will be served throughout the night. The wine flows freely and food is abundant. Thorne is known for its exquisite cuisine, and Hayle is no different. With the harsh winter over and farmlands slowly recovering from the attack last summer, the nation is no longer struggling as much with supplies. Dishes include stuffed duck, delicate fish, rare nutty cheeses, soup, and plenty of cakes and biscuits.

◎ Entertainment
Formal entertainment involves music, dancing, and magic shows. You're welcome to take the stage yourself, of course! If you're not good at what you do, the citizens won't boo you off the stage, but you'll feel an awkward atmosphere begin to build, and word might spread about your act. The nobility in Thorne has exacting standards and a penchant for gossip.

Musical performances include original compositions on the violin and piano by Lestat de Lioncourt and elvish songs by Elrond, while Lord John Grey will recite some poetry and music. Magical displays include illusory lights featuring the Arcana signs by Istredd, flashy divination magicks channeled through a tarot deck by Urianger, and a light-based display of intricate mandalas Stephen Strange - whose third eye may be glimpsed beneath his hood when he casts his Eldritch magic.

◎ Night's End
The banquet runs late into the night, though you can leave any time. A carriage will be waiting to take you back to your inn. You can stay for one last social breakfast in the morning before returning to Castle Thorne through the portal.
Free Cities (Libertas)
The first evening, the Prime Minister will gather guests by the mosaic sculpture in the Willow Memorial Park. Prime Minister Marlo expresses her gratitude for everyone's safe return and apologizes for the atrocities that occurred under her watch. The bravery and fortitude of those involved will be remembered. Fortunately, justice has found those responsible, and the city can begin to march forward. She acknowledges the formation of the Summoned Conclave, promising that her government will make sure nothing like this ever happens again to its people. The Summoned are, of course, people of the Free Cities regardless of where they came from.

Quilleth Kaur takes the stand afterward, addressing the tragedy that struck Libertas not long ago and personally thanking the Summoned for their help in rescuing survivors and rebuilding the city. This includes the construction of the park itself, led by two of the Free Cities' longest Summoned residents. She bids everyone to enjoy the festivities. They deserve to relax and feast after a harrowing experience.
Gifts
As a resident of the Free Cities, you'll receive a gift basket containing:
Tickets to a special comeback show by one of Libertas' most famous acrobatic troupes - their first since the city's destruction. The envelope includes a letter which addresses you by name and thanks you for your help. If you've made an impression on the citizens of Libertas, the letter will mention noteworthy things you've contributed, such as volunteer efforts or donations. The tickets grant you the best seats in the house and a free drink during intermission. Performances are held throughout April and May, so you'll have plenty of time to attend.

◎ A kazoo, best used to annoy your friends or heckle anyone you find disagreeable, though beware that the people of Libertas won't hesitate to brawl on the street over insults.

◎ Luxurious bath crystal balls that fizzle and give the water a beautiful shimmer. Infused with medicinal properties, they'll alleviate aching muscles and lingering pains.
Surroundings
Located far south, Libertas is most famous for its subversive attitude and colorful architecture. With winter on the way out, the weather is warm but not scorching hot as it can be in the summer. Rare spring rains have caused flowers to bloom and sprout around the desert.

Libertas is diverse and lax in social norms. Where Cadens boasts the best research and technology, Libertas' focus is on advancements in free thought, art, and knowledge. Following the art walk not long ago and the long-term portal to Libertas, some of these attitudes have filtered into Cadens.
◎ Artist Alleys
The collapse of the city's buildings has caused street art to greatly flourish. Winding alleyways between homes and shops contain paintings, written poetry on the walls, and musical performances. Sculptor Axn Kade, famous for his pieces made of reclaimed metal and his activism for mining safety, has added a new sculpture to the city's streets. The plaque contains a dedication to the Summoned who helped clean up the mining equipment a few months ago, having used the scrap metal gathered during that process.

◎ Gambling Halls & Brews
Rejecting government oversight, Libertas is home to several gambling halls of all types. If you have the money, you're sure to find a spot to suit you. Beware of loan sharks and play at your own risk. Taverns around Libertas are rowdy. They often have an open floor for art performances, poetry readings, and philosophical debates. Always open to new ideas, many places in Libertas host tastings for brews created using innovative flavors and techniques.

◎ Market Square
Though not as large as Aquila's market, the Libertas market square is still a sprawling maze. Anyone with something to sell will have squeezed a table or a stall into the area. Enterprising merchants will give you a demonstration of some of their products, most powered by New Magic: a comb that changes your hair color upon use, eye drops that give your irises an enchanting colorful glow, and disposable crystal accessories that take on the illusion of precious jewels for a short period - invented to undermine the value of gems. Any changes to your appearance are temporary, lasting 24 hours.

Before the feast, simple dance lessons are available from Caitlyn Kiramman.
Garden Feast
The feast takes place on the second evening, held at the Willow Memorial Park. Glowing orbs of light have been hung from the willow trees while vases made by a local potter feature flowers from the park's wildflower meadows. More details about the park are available under Locales for Libertas.

Provided by Viktor (and Jayce Talis), the center of the garden contains a revolving armillary sphere modeled after the astronomy of Abraxas, casting an atmospheric starry light over the area.

To start with, you'll pull your table number from a hat to receive your "assigned" seat, but there's no need to stay there all night. Guests are encouraged to mingle and wander around. Make friends, meet new people, and introduce yourselves!
◎ Food & Drink
An eclectic array of dishes line a large table at the park's center. Help yourself to what you like in any order. No one will bother you if you start with dessert! Wine, ales, and hard liquors are as plentiful as the food. Dishes include grilled fish and pork, dips and spreads, puddings, sweetbread, cakes, and seasonal fruits common to the desert climate, such as figs and oranges.

◎ Entertainment
Formal entertainment involves music, dancing, and poetry. Artists have been invited to unveil new pieces or showcase old favorites. You're welcome to take the stage yourself, of course! Performers won't be judged on talent so much as passion. As long as you're creative and genuinely enjoy your craft, you'll have the support of the locals.

Jaskier will put on a lute performance, including a ballad of Spyndlveiss containing themes related to the recent disappearances. Diana Prince will recite a short portion of The Iliad, in both Ancient Greek and common. A "blade dancing" display using a painted stave by Obi-wan Kenobi will take place, as well. Finally, Hilda Goneril will draw and paint quick "fashion sketches" to commemorate everyone's style - available to both small groups and individuals.

◎ Night's End
The feast runs late into the night, though you can leave any time. A wagon is available to bring you back to your inn, but most locals prefer to walk, creating a drunken parade of people through the streets while singing cheerfully. You can stay for one last social breakfast in the morning before returning to Cadens through the portal.
Solvunn (Primary Settlement)
The first evening, the two remaining members of the Council, along with Isar Hart, address the gathered, apologizing for the sheep who strayed from their flock. They're especially disappointed with the heretical actions of a trusted community member, whose name they will no longer acknowledge. The gods have cast their judgment, and now the community can come together to heal. The Council promises the newly formed Summoned Conclave that they are vital members of the commune and that Solvunn is here to aid them in whatever they need.

Isar Hart reiterates that his position on the Council is temporary until the seat can be filled, though the Council does not give a date for when this might occur.
Gifts
As a member of the Solvunn Commune, you'll receive a gift bag containing:
◎ A clay mug, handmade by children in the settlements. Each mug is customized for the individual based on what the children have managed to learn about you, painted with what they believe to be your favorite colors, flowers, patterns, or animals. How accurate the kids are about you varies depending on your interactions with them, but they've tried their best. The bottom of the mug is signed by the child who made it for you. If you run into them afterward, they might ask if you like your mug.

◎ Thick and comfortable knitted socks made from the wool of Isar Hart's sheep farm.

◎ A few sachets of herbal teas to help you get a good night's rest and restore your energy. A small thank-you note accompanies the teas, signed by Lorelai and Esmond, who are grateful for the chance to return home.
Surroundings
The southernmost of the settlements, the Secondary Settlement boasts vast sprawling farmlands and a beautiful shoreline overlooking the ocean. Skies are sunny and clear throughout the gathering. Wildflowers bloom across the flat plains, orchards are starting to bear fruit, and fish are plentiful once more.

The Secondary Settlement is sparsely populated but maintains a tight-knit community. Where the Primary Settlement is a hub for schooling, craftspeople, and artisans, the Secondary Settlement is focused on agriculture and livestock: sheep, goats, horses, and fields of crops fill the area. Many families take pride in supplying the commune with produce and materials like wool, eggs, milk, and grains.
◎ Farms & Livestock
Farms are open with fences solely to keep out any predators or pests. You're free to visit the fields and orchards. Pick apricots and cherries, pet the sheep, play with the baby goats, and gather eggs for the evening's potluck. Isar Hart will be pleased to show you his prized black sheep, whose majestic horns are greatly admired. Smaller gardens filled with flowers and herbs are also available to explore. If you'd like to put together bouquets for the evening or make flower wreaths to decorate, you can help yourself. Finally, you can fish to your heart's content in the nearby pond. Bring your catch to dinner!

◎ Shrines
After recent events, shrines around the Secondary Settlement are full of offerings to appease the gods and seek guidance. These offerings consist of animal bones, harvested fruit, and wine. You can add to the shrines if you like or simply visit them. Many shrines hum with magical energy and all previous signs of corruption over the past few weeks have faded. You can ask for blessings of health, luck, or abundance for yourself or others.

◎ Neighborly Help
Although Solvunn doesn't place much emphasis on extravagance, the evening's affair is an important one. They'd like to look their best. Members of the commune are all around the settlement to give you a hand to get ready. You can have someone style or braid your hair with ribbons, color it with natural dyes, or lend you some clothes and accessories if you don't have any. You can help them in return, as well. They're also happy to trade items with you.

Louis de Pointe du Lac will temporarily alter your clothes or appearance for the night using illusory magic.
Potluck
The potluck takes place on the second evening, held outdoors in one of the Secondary Settlement's spring meadows. Decorations are rustic and simple, consisting of fresh flowers and candles.

Mud-clay sculptures and masks are available from Nanaue, though they are not very sturdy. Nero will hand out colorful brochures.

There are no assigned seats. Tables and chairs are placed tightly together, along with natural seating created by tree stumps and boulders. You're encouraged to mingle and wander around. Though a sober hush lies over the gathering, the atmosphere is hopeful. The people of Solvunn look forward to better days.
◎ Food & Drink
Solvunn's potluck feast consists of dishes and drinks brought by everyone in the commune, including members of the Council. There are hearty stews and soups, freshly baked bread, butter churned that very morning, and a variety of Solvunn's famous goat cheeses. You're invited to contribute anything you like! Simply add your dish or dessert to the table. The centerpiece of the potluck is a pig roast. Mead and ale flow freely.

Wanda Maximoff will bring sečenica, propeć (both cheese and egg savory baked goods), and traditional fruit pies of plums, cherries, sugar, almonds, and vanilla sugar. Claire Fraser will provide a unique loose-leaf herbal tea blend.

◎ Entertainment
The people of Solvunn will sing, dance, and make music together. On occasion, there are pauses for someone to take the spotlight, but overall no one's center stage for long. Instruments are passed around, and guests are encouraged to join in. Due to recent events, many songs are subdued, speaking of honoring the gods. Later in the night, stories are exchanged around the campfires. One particular folktale is told by Rowan March about Spyndlveiss, a figure who captures wayward sheep on their way between the settlements. From these lost sheep, he makes sheepskin suits for hungry wolves to wear.

Eddie Munson will hold a lively musical performance.

◎ Night's End
The potluck runs late into the night, though you can leave any time. Large tents are nearby for you to rest and spend the night. In the morning, you can join in on the communal breakfast before returning through the portal to the Primary Settlement.

[ Another not-so-annoyed laugh flutters from her mouth at the second kiss but this time she doesn't try very hard to push him away, happily enjoying the attention and the banter between the pair. She doesn't even protest when Claude offers her up as a willing tea tester too. ]

You have such a way in the kitchen though, Sylvain. If anyone could make it edible, you could.

[ The noise from the street becomes muffled as they head further into the inn. Hilda can't help but put on a pout when Sylvain looks back asking about the direction of their rooms. It isn't as if this was a castle or something. ]

Of course I remember where our room is. It's the one right beside yours.

[ With their numbers now growing to five, they'd had no choice but to split the rooms. Probably for the best though. Five people in a room to get ready for a gala was little too much to ask, particularly when Hilda counted for two and half people alone. She raises an eyebrow, directing the question at both of them but only poking Claude in the cheek because of what she's capable of reaching at the moment. ]

Do you remember? And maybe the better question is did you remember to bring your room key?

[ Because she had hers somewhere. Like in her corset. She couldn't remember to be honest. ]

[ There's a highly exaggerated grumble of discontent from Claude over the notion either of them could be blamed for any of it - especially not when experimenting is half the fun of working with plants. Something he's determined for Sylvain even if it takes some prodding to get there much like it has with some of Hilda's jewelry; some might call it simply being annoying, but Claude likes to think that just makes it all the more effective.

As such, he's nodding along with everything Hilda's said including confirmation of where the room is and that he's not going to keep them from being let in somewhere unlike the earlier coin purse prank. ]

I have one of the keys, I think. [ Given that his hands aren't free, that comes with an entirely vague head motion that in mildly drunk logic means he's nodded to his pocket where he'd tucked it away when leaving, and one that says he entirely expects both Hilda and Sylvain to read his mind when no other explanation is forthcoming. ] Hey, Hilda. What do you say we set up this picnic in Sylvain's bed? I'm pretty sure he'd appreciate that.

[ Now Claude's just trying to get a rise out of him. But two can play this game, so he just smirks over his shoulder at the other man as they reach the door to their room. ]

Fine, but that just means we're sleeping in your bed, since you're going to get crumbs all over mine.

[ Bending down to set the box of pastries and carafe of tea on the floor, he turns back to where Claude still conveniently has his hands full of Hilda. A mischievous smirk still lingering on his lips, he steps in close, pressing into Claude's personal space, even as he slides one hand down his front to retrieve that key, since apparently he can speak drunk!Claude. He leans in, their faces inches apart, his gaze hooded as he purposefully turns the moment a little heated as his fingers tease their way into his pocket.

But instead of leaning in the rest of the way to close the distance between them, he shifts the angle at the last moment to lean past him and press a kiss to the corner of Hilda's lips instead.

Chuckling, he holds up the key a moment later, winking at them both, as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened. ]

Got it.

[ And he's gonna go unlock the door now. Coming, you two? ]

[ There's still some rational part of her Hilda's brain that wants to insist she can be deposited right next door after they have their picnic so she can sleep in the comfort of her own (inn) bed. But the thought is more of a lazy, absentminded one than a solidified desiere as she watches Sylvain languidly make his way over to Claude to take the key.

There's something fascinating in witnessing him tease Claude like this. The rational part of her brain, the one that suddenly feels more alert than it had been seconds ago, prompts her to move back slightly from her spot, even hazards making her absentminded thought a reality so that she can give them space.

Before any of those things can happen though, Hilda finds herself being kissed instead. Her face immediately flushes pink and as her eyes widen in surprise. It's entirely possible that Sylvain catches the look of shock on her face before he steps into the room. A beat later after recovering somewhat she gives Claude a little squeeze with her thighs. ]

You heard him, our pastries await. I think we've waited long enough for them.

[ There was a witty comment on the way about crumbs, there really was, but then Sylvain has to go and step forward with that expression which catches his attention a little too much. It's almost but not quite a look he's been given before - and the same goes for the hand traveling down him - and though both usually lead to a certain conclusion, the inn's hallway doesn't seem like the place for that.

In the end, he's just as surprised as Hilda is and has to blink when none of that set up finishes how he thought it would. But - that's not a negative or anywhere close to one because as he tilts his head a bit to see Hilda's reaction and notes that blush Claude immediately cracks a grin, and it's one that only grows wider when she tries to recover quickly. ]

He's good at that, isn't he? [ Also like other times this is whispered at a volume Sylvain can definitely hear, even with what he's about to say next. ] Don't let him hear that, though.

[ More than worth it to rightfully boost the man in question's ego as they walk into the room. In something else familiar to an amalgamation of various late nights, Claude sets Hilda down on their designated picnic bed gently rather than how Sylvain's dropped him a few times (not that he was complaining then or now) and in something more like their own nights, leans down to remove her shoes to whisk them away where they can't be stumbled over. Like by him since Claude has to lean against the wall for a little added support while taking off his own, but doing so means he notices something else. ]

Hey, this thing, [ with a point towards the nearby dresser where some sort of decorative but plain tray resting on top is one means to repurpose as a serving item, ] might keep us from spilling tea all over the bed while we're at it.

Too late, I totally heard that.

[ His cheeky grin is downright audible in his voice as he saunters deeper into the room, setting their treats down on the nightstand. He sounds very pleased with himself, especially after the reaction that teasing kiss had gotten from both of them.

As Claude deposits Hilda on the bed, he's already shrugging out of his suit jacket, eager to be rid of it and relax for the night. He didn't mind dressing up every now and then - especially for events like tonight - but he much preferred casual comfort if given a choice.

Jacket draped over the back of a nearby chair, he unbuttons the first several buttons of his shirt and rolls up the sleeves past his elbows to help cool off. Kicking his boots off, he turns back to the bed and flops down beside Hilda, sprawling comfortably on his side as he grins at them. ]

That's probably a good idea. I'd prefer not to wear our midnight snack if we can avoid it.

[personal profile] theidlemaiden 2023-06-03 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Now you've done it. We're never going to hear the end of it tonight.

[ A dramatic, pained groan leaves her mouth as she's attended to by Claude. Upon being freed from her stunning shoes, her toes wiggle enthusiastically. The bliss of taking off high heels feels like a small joy, but one she intends to relish especially after being in them for hours. Absently her eyes trail after Claude, noting where he places them, a habit developed in their Academy days. You never knew when you might have to make a mad dash to toss them out of line of sight from anyone doing the rare curfew check or someone dropping by unannounced which obviously only happened when one of them weren't where they were supposed to be.

Neither of those things were likely to happen tonight, but she makes note anyway. After all, she might make an exit for her room to give them privacy. Sure her room is mere steps away, but she isn't about to leave a pair of shoes like that behind. But in the mean time, there's some far better scenery in this room. Her eyes skip appreciatively towards Sylvain as he makes himself comfortable, hardly making it subtle. When he lands beside her on the bed, she reaches out to give his cheek a playful pinch. ]

Just don't pout if I have to sip my tea extra loud just to drown out any gloating.

[ Her dress isn't the most fitted thing she's worn, but she's stubborn enough that she doesn't make a move to wiggle out of it. Instead she motions towards the tray and Claude who is conveniently the only one amongst them left standing. ]

It's a great idea actually. I don't want crumbs on my dress either. Claude, can you bring it over here? [ Her lips curve, eyes turning pleading. ] I just can't get wriggle off the bed in this dress.

No one's wearing anything from the midnight snack, because the crumbs are gonna end up in Sylvain's bed rather than anywhere else. That includes them staying on anyone.

[ A very matter-of-fact statement as he's all too happy to continue dooming Sylvain's bed to this fate when there's no small amount of rather flaky pastries in that box waiting to be demolished by the three of them. Besides that, there's an entire other bed ready to be occupied when it's time to go to sleep. Whenever that'll be, at some point eventually.

Something Claude's not concerned with as with his boots tackled, there's nothing left to do but grab the tray. Hilda's plea brought a smirk to his face he'd smothered quickly, or attempted to, considering it's also familiar. So is him caving to to her requests rather than being difficult (at least some of the time), and now's no exception as he sets the tray down between the two of them while also having made no secret of his admiration on the short trip over.

Which is why after completing his duty for safe tea consumption, Claude sprawls out to complete the sort of triangle around the tray and pastry box, complete with using Hilda's lap as a pillow and more obnoxiously draping his legs over Sylvain's. ]

You guys were onto something because this is way more comfortable than wandering around Libertas. [ With a partial feigned sigh of comfort to go with that before he reaches into the box to retrieve a croissant to hand to Hilda first, then a meat pie to Sylvain, and finally the one with a small mountain of cheese filling for himself. ] On second thought, that compliment goes to you, Hilda, since Sylvain's already hit his quota for the day.

[ There's one last grin for good measure before he takes a bite of his pastry. Totally worth nearly getting kicked out of the cafe over. ]

What did my poor bed ever do to offend you so badly?

[ He makes a play at sounding mock offended on his bed's behalf, even though he's quite comfortable taking up space in Claude's right now. At least until the man flops down with them and obnoxiously drapes his legs over Sylvain's, trapping him in place.

He reaches out, prodding at the underside of Claude's knee with a snicker as the man makes himself comfortable, but accepts the meat pie as an apology offering. ]

Wait, we've instated quotas now? Since when? And are you really sure that's the thing you wanna put a limit on?

[ Hilda is quick to uncross her legs so it's more comfortable for Claude and her. Absently she plays with some of his hair as the pastries are distributed and offers Sylvain a paper thin answer to his question. ]

Sylvain, we don't really have anything against your bed. It just so happened to be the closest within sitting range. Next time, just don't take the bed closest to the door.

[ She tops it off with a sweet smile of thanks as she reaches for the croissant greedily with both of her hands. After ensuring that one hand is below her croissant to catch any wayward flakes from hitting Claude's face she takes an indulgent bite. A happy, muffled sound soon follows. Never one to speak with a mouthful, her answer comes a beat later once she's swallowed her bite, eyes dancing with laughter. ]

Unless that's Sylvain's way of being greedy. How many compliments is he up to anyway? Am I behind?

[ There's a vague wave of his hand here, a gesture meant to second what Hilda's said since he's in total agreement and also too busy chewing. Also maybe trying to limit the crumbs actually falling on the bedspread beneath him, but that's a plan he gives up on when it means pulling away from Hilda's hand in his hair far too often. It's hardly but a second at a time, but that doesn't mean he wants to miss out on any of it.

Anyway. With one well-enjoyed bite out of the way, there's nothing to do but keep talking, of course. ]

If we're talking outright compliments... [ and he might be eying Sylvain with an extremely amused look here, if only because he can imagine what's going to be said if he doesn't clarify - ] ...nah, you're still way ahead of him, Hilda. I don't think you have to worry about not being in first place any time soon.

[ Claude reaches back haphazardly and it takes a couple tries before he finally manages to land that hand on her leg to pat it. Or it was going to be a pat but he ends up leaving it there for the added contact, then uses one leg to nudge Sylvain's (sort of) to really make maximum use of his sprawled out position. ]

But don't worry, we'll get you caught up eventually.

[ Sylvain just nudges him back with his knee as he takes a bite of his own meat pie. And yeah, he's gonna need a minute here, because that cafe was clearly a great choice. Their pastries were amazing and Sylvain is definitely making a mental note to go back there sometime.

Bite finished, he spares another moment to roll his eyes at Claude, fondness in dark eyes. ]

Nah, that's okay, I think Hilda deserves them more anyway. [ He rolls a little to face her again, grinning at her. ] Your place as Queen of All Devoted and Admiring Compliments will remain unwavering.

[ Claude's attempt to - pat her lap? Place his hand there? It's a little difficult to tell - is hilariously adorable and it's difficult to mistake the curve of her lips for as anything but adoration. ]

Oh I see, this is a lifelong title versus just a compliment count for tonight.

[ When his hand finally does settle, her hand moves to give his a gentle squeeze instead before returning to its place among brunette locks. Her fingers idly twirl them as she gives Sylvain a bit of a Look - the one she usually gets when compliments are being laid on too thick for even her liking. ]

Compliments can be for everyone especially when they're deserved. [ The look softens into something that can only be described as admiring. ] And I do think you deserve some for looking so good tonight. And you too, I guess.

[ The last bit is directed at Claude as she tugs at his own locks. ]

But don't let that go to either of your heads otherwise I'm never going to be able to keep you both grounded.

[personal profile] godshattering 2023-06-08 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, you meant tonight? In that case, I could spend the next hour or so flattering you both if that'd help. Even if I think you just added me to that as an afterthought, Hilda.

[ Claude's smiling as he takes another bite of pastry. That's not the point of that they're saying - probably - but he squeezes her leg fondly where his hand still rests in response to that tug at his hair while contemplating this potential plan. It's nice to feel so at ease; as hesitant as he is to call any moment perfect, this is certainly up there. ]

Anyway, I'll never say no to a compliment but it's too late for me since my ego knows no bounds. Luckily, that also means I'll survive being in second place.

[ A surprise to no one, he's sure, after he finishes that bite and another one, and now has the benefit of being able to use the pastry as a method for gesturing when he points to Sylvain next. The very reason he's in a justified second place, considering he's in agreement with Hilda. ]

Don't think that means you get to escape them, either. Hilda's onto something about you looking good.

[ Sylvain just snickers at that, rolling over onto his stomach so he can prop his chin on Hilda's opposite knee, so now both of them are sprawled halfway in her lap. She does make a very nice pillow. ]

Oh? Does that mean I meet your approval, then? I put extra effort in, after all.

[ He says that with a teasing tone, mischief in his gaze. He's totally joking, obviously. Even if it's still a little true. ]
theidlemaiden: (pic#16006946)

[personal profile] theidlemaiden 2023-06-08 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
[ Claude's (mostly correct observation) about being an afterthought is met with a mock, hurt gasp; the fond expression in her gaze hasn't left though and she's quick to brush a stray lock of hair back from his forehead. ]

Claude, when are you ever an afterthought?

[ A joke? An effect of the alcohol? It's hard to tell because it's exactly how she'd say it even if she hadn't had anything to drink. The sudden arrival of Sylvain's chin on her knee is met by her adjusting herself more comfortably for the both of them. In spite of her insistence that she had wanted a snack, she reaches over them to plop the croissant onto the tray so that her other hand can card gently through Sylvain's hair.

There's an effort to chide Claude for his unspoken compliment - but then again, she did it first, didn't she? Not that she's going to own up to it. ]

Claude, you're letting it go to his head again! I can practically feel his ego growing.

[ He's ready to go on and on about The Great Wounding of Whatever-Abraxan-Year-It-Is in being an afterthought, only spurred on by that warm undercurrent to Hilda's voice and her hair still in his hand. Until she makes a comment about growing, and Claude drops his pastry onto his chest for safekeeping to give himself a free hand with which to cover Sylvain's mouth. Immediately. The benefits of being so much closer than moments ago seen in real time. ]

No comment there from you, thank you very much.

[ There's lots of possibilities, all of them making it difficult for Claude to not laugh whether Sylvain was planning to take it there or not. On second thought, he'll just leave this hand also in place even if it means no free one to keep eating. He can deal with that since it's one less distraction from turning his attention back to Hilda next as he tilts his head back to see her better. ]

Don't worry, I have plenty of compliments for you, too. Sylvain would chime in if he could, [ not that Claude's hand is really enough to muffle much or that he's really even trying to do anything beyond be annoying - to everyone - at this point, ] but let's see. Should we start with how you commanded all the attention at the gala all night?
philancer: (055)

[ Sylvain's mouth was already open, a devious glint in his eye because really, Hilda, you should know better than to set him up like that.

Claude's hand clapping over his mouth gets a muffled grunt of complaint that is fortunately completely indecipherable. But likely would have gotten him smacked by both of them, rather than just Hilda. His gaze narrows in an indignant scowl even if Claude had probably just saved his life. Or at least his dignity. For tonight, at least.

When he doesn't move it away after a few moments, making it obvious he was quite content to keep it there, that devious glint slips back into his gaze as he purposefully licks a stripe up Claude's palm before encircling his wrist and dragging the hand away. ]

I can totally chime in, thanks, if someone would stop smothering me. Maybe he was worried I'd tattle on him over how many times I caught him watching you all night. I don't think it's just the gala that you commanded attention from all night.

[ He sounds very smug about the chance to tattle, actually. ]

[ Having been a part of the Deer house, instances like the one Hilda had set Sylvain up for were a dime a dozen. There was never a shortage of jokes cracked at the expense of others and no one was safe. It was more common that Hilda was in Sylvain's position – ready with a joke in a similar vein. So really, she has no leg to stand on when it comes to chiding him for what he didn't say.

He didn't have to though. Her synapses are firing a little slower than normal, but she fills in the blanks the moment she sees the mischievous glint in his eyes. The look she gives him would be absolutely withering as she tugs on his hair, if it weren't for the lift at the corner of her lips.

In the next beat she's turning to Claude with a gasp as her hand rushes to clamp over his mouth. ]

Stop that! I was not. Did you see the other Summoned?

[ Her other hand immediately takes the place of Claude's where it once was over Sylvain's mouth. Gods it's like trying to wrangle cats with these two. Suddenly she sounds exasperated. The tips of her ears begin to turn a faint pink and she's making a concentrated effort not to look at either of them but specifically Claude. ]

I barely saw the two of you tonight apart from some dancing. I didn't command anything.
godshattering: (pic#15529797)

[personal profile] godshattering 2023-06-11 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
[ The tongue across his palm gets a wrinkle of his nose that's not genuine but more of a played up reaction, and as Sylvain relocates his hand he's quick to overdramatically wipe it on the other man's shirt. There's no time for a comment on smothering, supposed gazes following someone else, or any other smart remarks before Claude's getting a taste of his own medicine and a hand lands on his mouth.

This is quite the chain reaction he thinks as he looks up at Hilda with mirth and fondness, the flames for both only stoked by her reluctance to look at them and the protest. Easy then to repeat a version of Sylvain's convincing hand removal but this version includes Claude pressing a hidden kiss to her palm before reaching to pry ("pry") it away. Rather than let go, he simply holds onto it against his shoulder. ]

You're just giving me support for what I'm saying, you know. If you didn't notice us that's because you were commanding everything and were too busy for us. I see how it is.

[ The last part said like he's deeply wounded, naturally. Though if Sylvain thought he was going to escape being roped further into anything, well. The smirk preceding this next statement will make that clear that's not the case. ]

Sylvain agrees since he's already admitted to watching both of us.

I wasn't about to deny it.

[ Sylvain confirms his watching with a smirk as he rolls a bit to pillow his cheek against Hilda's knee. His fingers drop to trace absent shapes and swirls against the warm skin of her thigh beneath him. ]

You two were the best things to look at all night, after all. Why would I look anywhere else?

[ Part of that might be pretty flattery and flirting, but that didn't mean a note of truth didn't lurk in there as well. ]

[ Claude's sneaky kiss to her palm doesn't change much in regards to the expression on her face, but it does cause her eyes to at least flicker down towards him, catching the affectionate mirth in his face. There's a 'tsk' at both of their flattery, but she doesn't move to replace her hands back over their mouths. Instead, her fingers settle into the grooves of Claude's shoulder, absently running them along the fabric covering his warm skin. ]

I was busy painting sketches. That's totally different than commanding a room. If I was looking at anyone except the person I was painting that would have made a whole mess of things! [ There's a dainty sniff. ] I'm not Ignatz after all.

[ Even with her answer she seems fully intent on focusing on the delicate design of her dress instead of looking at either of them. With the inclusion of alcohol she barely manages to stop herself from admitting that she had been purposefully leaving them to their own devices for a reason. Something else thankfully comes out instead. ]

Because there was so much to look at? The decorations, the performances - the other Summoned?

Just because you weren't looking at us doesn't mean that everyone else wasn't looking at you. And that's my whole point!

[ He's going to temporarily ignore Sylvain turning the compliment back around on both of them - not because he's not flattered, since he certainly is. But in alcohol-affected logic where his mind switches gears from teasing to something maybe a bit more earnest, that's less important than making sure Hilda accepts the compliment, which is why he waves his free hand in vague dismissal. ]

Besides, all of the other stuff you mentioned was great, sure. But did any of those have a line for them quite like your sketches did?

[ The obvious answer to this is no, in his mind. As tempting as it is to obnoxiously announce this as a checkmate since this all but settles in his mind, Claude settles for taking a bit of his partially forgotten pastry to punctuate that question that's more like a statement. Or accidentally get some of the flakes from it on Sylvain now that he's in close(r) range.

Maybe both. Both works. ]

[ Sylvain makes a noise of protest when crumbs rain down on his face and he shoots Claude an aggrieved scowl. But then he's right back at prodding lightly at Hilda's ribs, tsk-ing his tongue at her. ]

Nope. She was the bell of the ball, our Hilda. Unsurprisingly. [ He tilts his head back enough on her knee to peer upside down at Claude across from him. ] Can you imagine she thought we'd be looking at anyone else? Or that anyone else could hold a candle to her? Claude, you've clearly been slacking on your compliments if she's started thinking like this.
theidlemaiden: (pic#16517647)

[personal profile] theidlemaiden 2023-06-15 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
[ Apparently alcohol is the kryptonite to Hilda's usually impervious nature to compliments. Well, that's not entirely true. She does tend to fare far better when it comes to compliments directed at her appearance over her skills and ability to do things. But when both of those things are piled on her relentlessly in spite of her best efforts to staunch them? It's all too much for her to handle.

Perhaps, it has more to do with who's actually paying her the compliments. She had been showered in them all evening from locals - everything from her sketches, to her shoes, her hair, her entire ensemble had been complimented but she had accepted them all (mostly) graciously with a bat of her eyelashes. There's no time to think about why these ones are getting to her. There's more important matters at hand, like trying to hide her embarrassment.

With everything combined, including Sylvain's prod in her ribs, causes her to illicit a small whine. ]

Stop!

[ Both of her hands come to her cheeks in a vain effort to hide the rising blush on her cheeks. But feeling like that isn't enough, she grabs
Sylvain's pillow before unceremoniously shoving both their heads off her lap and splaying out between them with her face buried in said pillow. Her voice, despite being muffled, is clearly embarrassed. ]

You're both so embarrassing. If I combust in this dress, I'm coming back to haunt both of you. Besides, wouldn't you two be looking at each other? Don't think I didn't see those glances from across the dinner table.
