WELCOME TO SOLVUNN!

WELCOME TO SOLVUNN!
Welcome to Solvunn! Bright suns and merriest of welcomes to you! The portal opens in a vast field on the western side of town surrounded by cattle, with a distant view of the bustling marketplace. The first impression of the settlement is one of idylic, country charm. There are no looming structures or crowded streets. Instead, there are cozier houses on wide streets and community buildings made of stone and wood. A gentle breeze rolls across the field and the sun is high in the sky.

There's not as much magic here as in other locations, but it's there. No one will be stopped from entering Solvunn, though suspicion will be cast upon new arrivals. Citizens will be friendly and welcoming, but curious about their new visitors. It isn't often that they welcome new folks- especially not so many at once!

With tensions between the other communities, Solvunn will not be keen on ratting out those who fled Thorne, but with the knowledge that sanctuary will not be given for free. Everyone does their part, whatever that part may be.

Asking questions will result in being told to find Rowan March, one of the council members, somewhere in the marketplace.

[Estinien raises a hand to wordlessly decline the offer of a cigarette, instead just listening attentively. He's genuinely curious what the other people who chose Solvunn think of all this. What were their goals, in a place that bases their ambitions around not choosing a side?

He shakes his head, grateful that the answer is no.]

Nay... most I have kept watch over arrived here at my side. A few others went to the Free Cities. No one who would choose Thorne after all that is someone I would call friend.

[ A pained look crosses his face at the mention of Throne. ]

Not all who chose to stay did so for Sai Ambrose or his aims.

[Estinien raises his eyebrow at that, catching the implication of it being something personal. However, it's more skepticism than scorn at this point. He can imagine reasons might stick around - subterfuge, perhaps - but he's not yet sure that's what the man means.]

What was it for, then?
towerjunkie: (Makes a sound)

[personal profile] towerjunkie 2021-09-02 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
[ There's a pause before Roland answers, blowing out smoke in a thin stream. ]

Friends. Or those she thinks are her friends. She's young, and a kind deed means much to her.

[ He can't completely blame her, and his tone is tinged with regret that he couldn't make his case well enough. But what's done is done. All things serve the beam. ]

[Estinien tilts his head. He's starting to see what he means. He's been thinking in terms of war, less in terms of young emotions.]

Who was it?

[He wonders if he met them.]
towerjunkie: (Has passed over)

[personal profile] towerjunkie 2021-09-02 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
A girl I knew, from the same world as me.

[ Judging by the sigh and the heavy pause there's... a lot more going on there than Roland has shared. But he also moves on quickly, not willing to share the details of their tragic past. ]

So while I can't agree with Sai Ambrose-- I think the Singularity ought to be protected and preserved -- I'm not so sure all who've chosen to stay there have thrown their lot in with him. There's power at that court, for any who can get close to it. And some folken are loathe to make choices for themselves. We don't know yet if they're all set against us.

Hmph.

[Estinien sound unconvinced, but he isn't going to keep assailing the morals of a girl he hasn't met. No matter a person's intention, he feels like staying with Ambrose is willingly allowing themselves to be enslaved. That man clearly intends to rule by fear if he needs to.

He falls silent for a short stretch, frowning at the table. Finally, he reaches into his pocket, dumping a handful of coppers onto the table. Before he discusses this further, there's something he needs to settle.]

You've been here for a while. How many of these does it take to get a drink?
towerjunkie: (Drawing near)

[personal profile] towerjunkie 2021-09-03 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
[ The pause is good for Roland. Thinking about Susan and her choice makes him want to set off back to Throne to get her-- but he knows it'd do no good.

He's in the middle of blowing another thin stream of smoke when Estinien sets his coins on the table. Roland's eyebrows raise a fraction, then he reaches over to slide out the going rate for a drink. ]

This much'll wet your throat, say true. I hear there's stronger liquors under the counter, and they'll cost more.

[ And lifting his hand (the missing index and middle fingers obvious as he waves it) and calls out to the flax-haired young woman serving drinks tonight ]

Bryn, come on by and tell my friend what you've got that'll satisfy his thirst.

[Injuries like that make Estinie think the man is either a soldier or a person who works with farm equipment. There are a lot of ways to lose a few fingers, but it's a curiosity, nonetheless. He doesn't spend long looking, though.

What's just as interesting is that he's already apparently on a first-name basis with their server. It makes things easy for him, at least.

Bryn is kind enough to give him a brief rundown of their most popular offerings, and he selects the equivalent of a medium ale. He's not very picky when it comes down to it, and is mostly just looking for the standard fare. Maybe he'll become curious about experimenting later, but not on his first day out.]

My thanks.

[He puts the rest of the coins back in his pocket.]

I take it you've found accommodations, then?
towerjunkie: (You're begging me)

[personal profile] towerjunkie 2021-09-05 10:13 am (UTC)(link)
[ Roland asks Bryn for another drink himself, draining what's left of the drink he's been sipping at. ]

Mm. Right upstairs here. It's reasonable, and I bring in game every few days as thanks for the low rent. Not my usual trade, but it's keeping me in coin while I get the lay of things.

[ While he finds out how neutral the folk here are on the Singularity. ]

[personal profile] coerthantorment 2021-09-05 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[Well, that explains the familiar relationship between him and the barkeep. Estinien nods his head in acknowledgment.]

Aye. I'm intending to earn some coin that way, as well.

[Though he's been taking it slow, mostly for physical reasons. Roland can probably tell, that despite his towering height, Estinien is hollowed out with weeks of starvation. What they were fed in the dungeons was not nearly enough for someone of his size, and towards the end, he'd been denied food entirely more than a few times for his escalatingly bad behaviour.]

Are you a soldier?
towerjunkie: (Close to 94)

[personal profile] towerjunkie 2021-09-05 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
A soldier?

[ That's surprised him. But... it shouldn't. Eddie and the others from New York had never heard of gunslingers, it's likely other worlds wouldn't either. ]

No. I'm a gunslinger, say true. We keep the peace, dedicate our lives to the preservation of All-World and those in it. Or we did, before the world moved on.

coerthantorment: (17)

[personal profile] coerthantorment 2021-09-05 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hmm... well. Okay. He feels like Roland is talking about some kind of cultural standby he's not at all familiar with. As far as he knew, being a 'gunslinger' was the same thing as being a fighter of any other sort.]

Whatever you're referring to, it must be a custom my star is unfamiliar with.

[He's hoping that Roland will simply elaborate.]
towerjunkie: (There's a tempest)

[personal profile] towerjunkie 2021-09-10 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
[ Hm. Roland's quiet a moment, considering how better to explain. ]

In the kingdom I'm from, it was customary for these to be men and women who were trained in the use of guns from a young age, as well as politics, ethics, history... everything they'd need to travel about the land and settle disputes and keep the peace. These were the gunslingers, following the example of Arthur Eld of long ago. Once, there were many. They travelled far and wide, keeping chaos at bay.

But the world's moved on. When I was born there were few of them; few men and few guns. Men and worse who sought chaos set themselves against Gilead, and aye-- they succeeded in bringing it's end. Without a dihn-- a king, a father on the throne, without gunslingers keepig the peace chaos has come more quickly. And while I doubt we'll ever see their like again, as the last of them I'm sworn to thwart the plans of those who want to plunge the world into chaos. Aye, and to keep peace and settle disputes wherever I'm asked for aid and succour.

[ as he speaks there's a distant look in his eyes. there are complicated feelings associated with many parts of this. but roland is firm in his believe that his role as a gunslinger is above question, necessary. as is his quest. ]

Does that clear your questions?
coerthantorment: (69)

[personal profile] coerthantorment 2021-09-11 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
[It does, actually, and it can be seen in the way that Estinien's brow furrows with interest. In the meantime, Bryn drops off their drinks, and he takes a contemplative sip. It's different from the Forgotten Knight, but not in any way that matters to him.]

Aye. And you would do the same here, then?

[If so, Roland could prove to be a particularly useful ally. It doesn't sound like the kind of work that would allow a man to slink away from the bigger issues. It's the sort of mission statement that is comforting in its familiarity.]
