I know there's some practical uses for that, but I think it's easy to see the downsides.

( that does sound pretty annoying. matt manages to withhold laughter at the mental image and then shakes his head. )

Guess it'd be good if you were ever on fire? Wouldn't need to stop, drop and roll.

[It's fine if Matt's willpower gives out when it comes to refraining from laughing, because it really is pretty funny, and Jayden can't help but laugh a little himself at the offered suggestion.]

Y'know, I hadn't thought of that, but you're right.

[He's been considering practical but somewhat depressing things, like when the water supply had been so low in the pit, being able to summon up some rain would've been convenient. But more fantastical ideas are a lot more fun, and he adds--]

It'd probably also be good for some really petty revenge.

[Just the thought of being able to summon a raincloud over someone who's annoying him is almost as good as the idea of actually doing it.]

Remind me to stay on your good side.

( since matt would like to avoid getting rained since his luck is pretty unfortunate without that. he laughs a little because the thought is just ridiculous. )

Can I ask how you found out you can do that?

Don't worry, you're one of the least likely people here to get any unexpected personalized rainclouds.

[It's a compliment, sort of??? It seemed nicer to say than 'you're one of the least annoying people I've met here', although that is true, but of course he couldn't just say something like 'so far you're one of the most pleasant people to talk to'. That'd be something that involves actually acknowledging a positive relationship and Jayden absolutely can't just be a normal person that way.

But it's because of the unspoken positive relationship that he gives a somewhat truthful answer to the question, if a bit abbreviated.]

It just sort of happened when I was feeling kind of down. Like a cartoon or somethin'.

( and all things considered, matt's been down a lot lately and it hasn't happened to him so maybe whatever sort of talent or ability he's gonna pick up won't be that.

or maybe he will now that he's said he won't. )

A friend of mine in Solvunn told me about someone there who had their own theme music happen from time to time. Sounds a little bit like what you've got going on.

It was. Kind of helped my mood, though; it was a little too weird not to.

[Annoying, sure, but also very funny. Which is similar to what he feels about the idea of theme music.]

It does, though I think I'm glad I got this one instead. Theme music would get really old really fast.

[A pause.]

And it couldn't put out a fire.

It couldn't.

( and matt thinks it'd get pretty damn annoying after the first few times. to constantly have music playing when you enter a room or whatever?

funny at first but really annoying after all. )

And you'd probably grow to hate it eventually.

I don't even think it'd be 'eventually', probably more like five minutes later.

[Honestly, the more he thinks about it the worse it sounds.]

D'you know of any other examples of these sorts of spontaneous powers?

I don't...think so.

( if there's something out there, he hasn't heard of it. )

But I don't tend to talk about powers that much because I just forget people have them. I'm so used to just being myself without magic and abilities.

[Jayden considers that answer a moment, understanding how Matt could think that way, but it's completely different for Jayden.]

It's the opposite for me. It's hard for me not to be thinkin' about all the magic and weird powers and all that sort of stuff.

[And about how out of his element he is, and how quickly he can go from starting to feel like he has some idea of what life is like in this place to being completely lost and confused.]

Because it seems to be everywhere and all around you?

( magic did seem to be pretty prevalent and seemed to be the basis of what happened in these places. )

Feels kind of weird to be someone that shows up here without magic only to be given it.

Something like that.

[It's an accurate description, just one that doesn't feel strong enough.]

It does, yeah. Seems like magic isn't a deciding factor in who's brought here, though since it's so important here it feels like it would be.

I know Solvunn's heavy in magic users but I know Thorne's got a few too.

( and then there was the free cities with...some magic. )

I think the Free Cities is more of the fighting with your hands kind of people.

Seems like it. But more weapons than hands, at least from what I can tell.

[Lots of swords and other weapons Jayden's also not good at.]

I'm startin' to think I should learn to swordfight or something.

That might be...interesting.

( and not something he'd ever thought of learning but jayden might have a point. )

I don't think I've ever held a sword in my life.

( that was untrue but it's definitely not his weapon of choice. )

Me either, though some guy tried to shank me with a katana a few days before I got here, if that counts.

[It doesn't, but that's a lot closer to a swordfight than a lot of people ever get in his world, so he supposes it's something.]

( that reminds him very, very vividly of the hand. he's pretty sure he's been stabbed by one of those two.

Those things are pretty sharp. How'd you avoid it?

He was just kind of swingin' wildly.

[Which, if he's being honest, is most of the reason Jayden could dodge it. It certainly wasn't very graceful or skillful on either side of that fight.]

I think he was more interested in getting away without revealing his face than anythin' else.

A wild swing with a katana is still one that could mess you up.

( so, you know, still ouch. )

Glad you didn't get hit. Were you able to get the guy?

Yeah, for sure. I blocked one of 'em with a punching bag and it sunk way in there.

[He definitely feels fortunate not to have been caught by one of the swings, even just a glancing one.]

Not at the time, but he was in such a rush he left behind some evidence, and we caught up with him the next day. It was the serial killer we'd been tryin' to track down, so some near misses with a katana turned out to be worth it.

Sloppy of him but good for you.

( in this instance, sloppiness is very good. )

He go away for a long time?

He would have.

[Jayden would've preferred it had gone that way, for many reasons, but unfortunately it wasn't the case.]

He fell, durin' a confrontation. At least we knew for sure he was our guy, and there's no chance he can ever hurt anyone else again.

[Which is ultimately most important.]

Can't be sorry to see a serial killer be off the streets no matter the reason.

( it's safer for all involved, really. he's not one to kill but he knows it...happens. )

Guess we both get a break from all that stuff here. Maybe. Possibly. A new set of problems to deal with.

Yeah. I'd never actually say that I wish my job were more in demand here, considerin' what that'd entail, but sometimes I wonder if it might be a little easier to deal with.

[But, then again--]

Except I wonder if there's some sort of magic or somethin' here that could replace DNA or fingerprint evidence, or if we'd have to work without it. That'd make things a whole lot trickier.
