Altaïr never saw himself as a teacher. He'd been an adept student himself and set as an example more than once, but it had stopped at being a training partner. It was only in his final hours in Masyaf before being Summoned that he'd been able to consider what it might mean to become the Mentor and take his master's place, and even then, teaching hadn't been among his top concerns.

So he's been surprised by how much he's enjoyed tutoring Jo in the way of the blade. It helps that she's an adept student herself, certainly eager. He'd wondered in recent weeks whether she'd had enough of it, but it seems as though other matters have diverted her attention for a time. Now, it seems she's ready to continue — and he's ready to try expanding her learning.

"Look that way," he says as they stand atop a Cadens rooftop. "That tower in the distance — how easily do you think we could make it from here?"

At a glance, the answer should be 'not very'. He's intentionally chosen this section of the rooftops for its challenge: difficult terrain not designed for foot travel, wide gaps through which one could easily plummet. But it all has a purpose. First he wants her to take her measure of the course; then, possibly, he can teach through example.

It was a leading question, purposely so, but he's still pleased with her response — if she thought it a simple task, he'd have to reconsider her tutelage entirely.

That doesn't mean she's not capable of it. If he thought that, they wouldn't be here at all.

"They would," he agrees. "Which is why we're going to bypass them entirely." Altaïr smiles. "You'd be amazed how infrequently anyone bothers to look up."

We're fashionably late together

"If you believe you can," he says, and corrects himself. "I believe you can. It's a question of whether you will."

She's here to learn and he doesn't expect her to perform perfectly. Why would she need him to teach her if that were the case? But it's up to Jo whether she makes something of her ability and potential.

"Allow me to demonstrate?"

He scarcely allows her time to respond before taking off — forward and up and forward again. Parkour isn't a word he's familiar with, but it's close enough to what he does, moving with grace and turning obstacles into opportunities. He only gets a little ways toward their intended goal before he stops, turns back, and nods to Jo. Her turn.
