[ Credit where it's due: Kyle's the first person stopping by who's neither a stranger nor a thin creepy little man he ain't exactly looking to make friends with. Also, he used the elevator. And didn't disturb his nap.
Anyways.
He catches the material orb one last time before sitting up. A grin flashes across his face, as slick as his usual but with a touch of genuineness that suggests he's not against Kyle poking in.
His eyes roam over Kyle's robes, curious but not too questioning. Reno himself's got the wings of the Chariot embossed on the back of his leather gloves. He's noticed, has sort of fussed with making it go away before he eventually gave up. Guess it's just a thing about this place. ]
Nah. [ He waves a dismissive hand. ] Nothing goes on in here. You need something?
[ Some things are like that in Horizon. Permanent, whether you want them to be or not. His own symbol of the Hanged Man is emblazoned on his left shoulder, the stitching made to match the moons on his collar - though he hadn't thought of that detail himself.
The colorful paperweight in Reno's hand doesn't stand out to him as anything peculiar at first, though it is pretty. ]
Not really, just exploring. [ He returns the grin with a crooked smile and a shrug. If a door is unlocked (or if he's given a key, in this case) he expects that the owner of the domain is fine with visitors. He glances around the room. ]
Do you know who this domain belongs to?
[ It doesn't occur to him that it's Reno's, given the timing of his arrival versus how long this place has been here. ]
[ The explanation's passes in his eyes. Sounds like the Kyle he's gotten to know over the past weeks. Poking around because he can. Reno's sometimes the same way.
Reno makes a little seesaw gesture with his hand. ] Guess we've got joint custody. Sephiroth made it first. Curtains of silver hair. About a foot too damn tall. [ In case Kyle doesn't recognize the name. ] I found it when I came in, decided I could just take over. We worked outta the same headquarters back home.
[ Well. Did. Before Sephiroth broke down, went insane, set everything on fire. Whatever, it's not a big deal right now. The SOLDIER seems...not about to do that again, and considering it was whatever shit in Hojo's lab that must've set him off (reports aren't clear over that incident; a lot of shit blew up, burned down, people getting knocked out and falling into mako pools...), he figures it probably won't be a repeat event. Probably.
They'll see. Not as though he can do anything about it. What, is he supposed to grab Sephiroth the ankle and chuck him off the planet like a grenade? ]
[ Oh. There's no recognition within his expression at the name, nor the description. Someone outside of Thorne - he would definitely notice a tall man with long silver hair wandering around the halls of the castle. But, also interesting that Reno knew someone in Abraxas from the start.
Having not been asked to leave, he pulls a seat from the long table, leaning back. It's comfortable. ]
I've heard of others doing the same. [ A wave around the room - sharing domains. Claude, Hilda and Sylvain all share the same grounds, carving out their own spaces within it. He imagines you have to be on relatively good terms with someone else to share this way with them. ]
This all exists where you're from, then? And - [ he frowns, nodding toward the repeating destruction on the screen. ] - that?
[ Actually? Reno's gonna count that as a win because he can't help being annoyed when someone only knows the building and Shinra related to Sephiroth. It's the kind of annoyance that's like when you see a crooked painting you can't fix. Doesn't matter that much, really, but it still bothers him. ]
That right? [ Huh. He never thought about it, other people sharing a space. Admittedly, Reno hasn't taken off exploring a whole lot. He pops in here to get away from the prying eyes in the castle, and to indulge in stuff he misses like air conditioning and phones and a decent burger. ]
Sure does. Shinra Electric Company. [ He spins the orb in his hand idly. The purplish magic swirls inside. There's the smallest pause when Kyle motions at the screen. Then a shrug. ] Just the latest shit on the news.
[ Yeah, that's all it is. Moving on. ]
Gonna tell you, this room right here ain't got much to it. Want a real look around? [ He's bored, and he really doesn't wanna explain some of the personal stuff that's part of the Turks' office. Reno's gotten to know Kyle well enough to recognize he's a little too astute sometimes. ]
[ It's a fair assumption. And while Kahlil can recognize the redirection for what it is, he has no reason to push the topic on screen right now. So he pockets the name Shinra Electric Company along with Sephiroth the silver-haired, and nods back toward the way he came. ]
Lead the way.
[ He's always open to exploring.
As he starts to gracefully walk backwards he nods toward the glass orb, noticing the strange swirling within it now. ]
Fancy paperweight?
[ Or a... what are they called... stormglobes? Snowglobes. Those usually have scenery inside, though. ]
[ See, that's why he likes Kyle. No questions. Reminds him of Rude, but with a significantly larger annual word quota.
He saunters out the door, letting it buzz shut behind him. Headquarter's not totally filled out. There's stuff missing like blurry photos on the walls that makes it obvious Reno hasn't paid a lick of attention to them in detail. Shit that's faded into the background for him a long time ago. But the room numbers and layout's pretty accurate—he knows his way around. ]
This? [ He laughs, then tosses it over to Kyle. Paperweight, huh? Yeah, he guesses he looks like one if you've never seen materia before. ] Materia orb. Crystallized mako. [ He tugs a bracelet, where a glowing purple orb is slotted. ] See?
[ The closest comparison Kahlil can come to for this building are the banks he used to rob in Nayeshi, the sense of high security and technology mingling - but this is on another level. The edges and details that blur are a little disorienting at times, he does his best not to focus on them.
He catches the glass orb as its tossed to him - materia. Inspects it at eye level, watching the inside swirl not with the sudden motion, but something of its own power. Or the memory of it. His gaze slides to the bracelet as Reno holds it up. ]
Yup. [ They stroll along towards an elevator. Not a lot to see in these underground levels, so...may as well take Kyle upstairs. Those sections they do guided tours of for the locals on the top that he hates. Nothin' he finds more annoying than walking into work to dodge a bunch of schoolkids on a field trip.
He pushes a button for the ground level with his thumb. ] The Planet's energy source. Comes outta the Lifestream. Shinra runs the reactors that powers all our shit. You condense the mako, it becomes these orbs. Gives you an edge in a fight.
[ So magic, basically. Is mako magic? Hell if he knows. Guess the similarities are there. If it makes stuff work, it makes stuff work. He doesn't have any interest in the minuscule nuances. ]
[ He hums at the explanation as they enter the elevator. Cramped spaces really aren't Kahlil's favorite thing in the world(s), but he'd taken it to get down here already.
Lifestream, mako, Shinra. He tucks each bit of new information away. ]
And you work for Shinra. [ This company, out of its black tower. He understands Nayeshi powers its cities and transportation thanks to a mix of electricity and some substance from within the Earth, so there's some similarities.
But no magic, there.
As elevator starts whirring upward, his stomach does a small flip. ]
Do you like it, working here? [ Did you, he guesses would be more accurate. Or is it just familiarity he's craving from these surroundings, something Kahlil can understand. There are details he feels connected to from Rathal'pesha that have snuck into his own domain, but the place he grew up and trained at wasn't a home. ]
[ Did? Does? He's been figuring out the same thing for himself. It's not like he defines himself by his job, or at least that's not what he wants to think he does. But ever since Hilda started poking and prodding him about hobbies and shit, he's just been. Thinkin'. About stuff he really actually doesn't want to think about.
Reno shrugs. He doesn't seem concerned about taking back the bracelet or the materia, like it's all expendable to him. The elevator rides to a smooth stop. When it opens into the lobby Kyle came through, the place is shiny and vast, lined with escalators that take you up.
Down one end, a bunch of vehicles line the showroom. It's all real corporate. Reno's not a great tour guide (none of these things are that exciting to him), but he does sort of wave at the motorcycles and cars invented over the years. It's evident Shinra is a bit more than just the guys who keep the power on in the city. ]
They pay me on time. Higher-ups are a bitch. It's not like I'm itching to run off and join the Honey Bee, y'know?
[ Since Reno doesn't request either back, he pockets them. Maybe they'll follow him back to his own domain, maybe they won't. Everything is flexible here (except that one time, in that strange place).
It's dark in the lobby. This place is odd. Continues to remind him of the Black Tower, though they're truthfully nothing alike. This place is a temple to something. Not a god, or a religion.
It's too much for him to really think about, though. They walk past the vehicles that looked vaguely familiar to him. Cars, he doesn't really care about. Motorcycles, maybe. He touches the steering handle. ]
But if you had a choice - you'd rather be on a beach somewhere?
[ He might've not asked for the stuff back, but he sure notices Kyle pocketing it without asking or anything. He doesn't care, obviously, but it tells him a little something about the guy.
Reno leans on the hood of one of the cars. Not like there's anyone here to give him shit about leaving fingerprints or disturbing the displays. ]
I mean, who the hell wouldn't? I'm not giving up my vacation days for the job. Once a year, you bet my ass is on the sunny shores of Costa del Sol.
[ He'd add Whether the boss likes it or not, but that's not totally true. He's been dragged out of his well-earned vacations 'cause of some crisis or another. Guess it comes with the territory. ]
[ He's usually more respectful of people's things, especially if they seem to hold meaning. But it weighs like nothing in his pocket.
As Reno leans against a car, Kahlil swings a leg over the motorcycle, testing the seat as he muses in response: ]
You landed in the wrong faction, I'm afraid. You'd have to hop the border all the way to Aquila to find the sunny shores.
[ Well, there's Borrel too, if he could find an excuse to be allowed to go. But Kahlil can't unsmell all the dead fish they used to catch those stupid birds, and he swears he still smells it every time he goes. Cannot recommend. ]
Man, I dunno. [ He leans back against the front of the bike that Kyle's chosen. Not gonna lie, it's not the worst to be here after hours with no one around demanding shit from him. ] Don't think a single place on this damn planet is the right faction. None of it looks like home.
[ Sure, yeah, he's seen the desert canyon, he's seen the snowy Great Glacier, but it's not like he lives there or hangs out most days of the year. Just places he's flown past on the chopper, dropped in to do a job then took off. Vacationed at every once in a while.
All that concrete and steel and glass in Midgar, he's never gonna find it here. It's not like he misses the shitty air or whatever, but it's just, y'know. Been home since forever. Plus, the crazy amount of grass makes him sneeze. He hates it. ]
[ His attention turns from all the little doo-dads on and around the steering apparatus to study Reno as he gives that answer, eyeing him thoughtfully. After a moment he turns away, smiling faintly to himself. ]
I think that's why I like it here. This world.
[ Not Thorne specifically. He understands now that the castle is where he was meant to be, but if he'd been given a choice it - he probably would've ended up in the Free Cities or Solvunn. ]
My world is small in comparison. People live more freely here.
[ Which is a bleak thing to say, considering the way Thorne is about the Summoned. But it's true. There are so many things he can do, can be here that he can't in Basawar. ]
[ Huh. Reno's eyes narrow, not in suspicion but something more thoughtful. Considering. He'd just never really, eh. Thought there were people who liked getting kidnapped off to another planet? What's up with that?
Maybe he can see it. If you don't got a lot to go home for, yeah? ]
Your planet must be pretty shit, if that's how you feel.
[ He's just sayin'. Like, the guy's gotta have friends? People he wants to see? Stuff he kinda misses? Hell, maybe Kyle doesn't. Reno's watched him for a bit, and Kyle sort of...floats around. Real good at what he does if you know him, not a hell of a lot of friends, even though from what he's gathered, Kyle's been in Thorne for some time.
[ He raises an eyebrow at that, then laughs. Shakes his head. ]
No, it's... things have been getting better, I think. Slowly.
[ The Rifter had passed through the Great Gate and the world had not shaken apart under his steps. The Payshmura fell, but life continued on. People no longer lived in fear of the Holy Road. ]
It's just that when I was young I always dreamed of traveling far away, to some paradise. I never could've imagined so many worlds actually exist, but - no one place is perfect.
[ Every world has its problems. But this is where he is meant to be. ]
[ There's a sense that what Kyle is saying is going over his head a little bit. Yeah, he gets the thought; big dreams and all that, he figures people have got those. He's just never really had them himself. Daydreaming's not his thing, and all of the ones he had when he was a kid, he dismissed a long time ago as just that. Shit you do when you're a kid.
Maybe he doesn't expect someone like Kyle to still be thinking back on that stuff.
Anyway. ]
You gotta have people waiting for you, right? I mean, no one's that much of a loner.
[ Everybody's got a friend somewhere. Even if they're hiding it. You just have to dig hard enough. That's the first thing he learned on the job. ]
[ Kahlil learned early to speak just vaguely enough to let people fill in the gaps for themselves. Most don't care enough to think too hard on the answers. Here is different, though. He lives with everyone here. They're a group, loosely connected as they are, but still connected. ]
Family's been gone a long time now. My job was my life, didn't have much outside of it. [ No relationships. No Rousma. ]
Maybe my boss wonders where I went. [ There's a fond smile at that, though if he had to guess Alidas probably thinks he ended up dead after what happened at the Bell Dance.
A pause, and he turns the question back to Reno with raised eyebrows. ]
[ Man. Reno likes to think of himself as a guy with no attachments, but even he sorta likes his colleagues. They're not family family, except they kinda are. Kyle's got him beat, though, if the best he's got is a maybe outta his boss. ]
Eh. [ He waves a hand. ] I guess I got a boss who might be wondering, too, but he's got a heart colder than Shiva's. Probably already found a replacement.
[ Ugh. What an awful thought. ]
I dunno. My partner, maybe. We've been working together since forever.
[ It doesn't feel that much of a risk to say it. Not like Rude's gonna pop up any time soon, and hell, everyone knows they're partners back in Midgar, too. They know how the job works. ]
Forever? Can't be too long - what're you, twenty five?
[ He offers another wry grin, swinging his leg over the bike to stand up again. ]
I kind of took you for a loner.
[ Not the partner type. Though, he did work well enough with him and Hilda on the mountain against that beast - ignoring all the bickering on the way up. ]
[ Reno matches that grin with a sly one of his own. ] Ain'tcha ever been told not to ask a lady her age?
[ He's pushing thirty, actually, but he'll take a robust twenty-five—though where the Turks are concerned, he still sits as the youngest of 'em. Comes with the territory when you climb the ranks fast.
His feet cross at the ankles. A loner, huh? That's a new one. ] Nah. Can't knock a good team at your back. They're just damn near impossible to come by.
[ Granted, Reno might operate as part of a unit, but that's not anywhere the same as always being a team player, 'cause at the end of the day, he'll do what he does. But he recognizes the value of having someone you trust. He and Rude have never been separated. 'Til now, he guesses. Which does suck.
He points at the materia Kyle pocketed earlier. ] You like those things, lemme know. I maybe got something in mind about them.
[ At that he laughs with a little shrug. A mystery, then.
Anything Kahlil's learned about teamwork, he's had to do here. The ushiri'im can work together to perform feats like God's Razor, but Kahlil was rarely a part of that. It was necessary for him to stand apart from the rest.
With another grin and a facetious oh, you caught me look, he pulls the materia from his pocket. ]
I will. [ with a raised eyebrow and a slightly curious look at maybe got something in mind about them. But with that, he gives a half bow and vanishes from the space, returning to his room in the real world. ]
