Yeah, actually. I brought you a book.
[She holds up a heavy hardcover tome.]
I found it when I was grabbing textbooks for when the new year starts. It's on the history of medical technology in the Free Cities. Thought it might have some stuff you'd find interesting.
[A distraction, really. And yes, something of an excuse to check on him, because she knows better than to make a fuss.]
Uh...and some drugs, if you want them.

[A book is, perhaps, the only thing that will perk him up, though he still seems a bit halfhearted as he reaches for it. Viktor doesn’t necessarily need treatises on the medical technology in Cadens, but it’s interesting to him regardless, and he can appreciate the fact that she knows not to approach him with pity, but with distractions.]
That’s very thoughtful. Thank you, Nadine.
[To the offer of drugs, however, he shakes his head.]
I need a certain…clarity of mind. For my current project. But business is good, I hope?

[It's what she'd like someone to bring her, were she in this position. Hell, she has been in this position, though the surrounding circumstances were far different. Still. She'd loved Flagg at the time, and it had pained her deeply to lose him.]
And understood. Just wanted to offer. But yeah, business has been really good. The apothecary part of the clinic is really busy. And this time of year, I can't keep sun cream in stock. But my classes are on break right now and I have more staff, so I can give it plenty of attention.
[She can't complain. She has a successful business and student practice, and her and Julie's diversifying into Vegas Botanicals has only helped things.]
You should come by me and Julie's and see my new greenhouse some time.

[Said in a way that indicates he prefers this over pity. Viktor gives the book a cursory once-over, flipping through some of the pages before he closes it and devotes his attention to the conversation.
He's kept some tabs on Nadine's activities, partially because she is his doctor, partially because he's a fellow business owner, too. The greenhouse perks him up a bit--Viktor has always liked plants, the antithesis of the smog-choked Undercity.]
I could take a look, yes. I'm actually working on a hydroponics project. That might be of interest to you, if you have a greenhouse now.

[Nadine is perfectly happy to just talk professional projects. God knows she understands throwing oneself into work. It's one of her own coping mechanisms.]
It would be great if you had any ideas for me. I'm using magic to help keep things watered, and I've been thinking about an irrigation system, but...you know me. I don't like to rely on magic or practicality entirely.
[Both can fail, which is when the other steps in. Technology and practical fixes can break or wear down, magic can be exhausted. They can both be used to spread the weight, so to speak.]
One of the things I can with magic is draw water out of the ground, even deep, if that's something useful to know.

This is easier.]
It's understandable. Magic and technology, together, is greater than the sum of its parts.
[It's what he's spent most of his career working on, at this point.]
My idea was true hydroponics--growing plants without soil via an irrigation system. If you have a way to draw water out of the ground, that might incorporate nicely.

[And with practice, spells grow stronger. Or rather Nadine's ability with them. Some of them she's much better with than others. Water is necessary for her growing, and so it gets a lot of use.]
It's like tapping into an underground spring and pumping it up, only there's no pump needed. I have plenty of soil, so I don't need a full scale water-only system, but I could use something. And I'm happy to lend my magic to any projects that could use it.

[In that he can envision the device he might build, to accomplish such a thing. Being able to do it magically cuts out physical infrastructure, though of course there is the human element.]
Would you let me study the spell? It might help me reproduce it, with technology and an enchantment. That way you wouldn't have to be on all.

[She has it memorized, after all. Whatever Viktor could do with it would be great. Anything to mitigate the effort spell casting takes. And saves time. Classes will be starting back up in just over a month, and Vegas Botanicals has really taken off.
Nadine's a very busy woman these days.]
I admit I don't know a whole lot about enchantment. But I'm curious.
[Purely from an academic standpoint. Magic in all of its forms is fascinating.]

[He seems pleased by this development. Viktor has spent most of his studies on New Magic and enchantments, thanks to the book from Kell, so occasionally he forgets that simple spells are readily available, the way Nadine describes.]
We smuggled a book from Thorne. Kell very nearly got in trouble for it.
[And now he's writing romance books, or something, to cover it all up. It's handled. He guesses.]
The metal we import from Luna--Braerium--is very favorable to enchantments. Jayce and I-- [The slightest pause, here, at the name,] --we developed an alloy to strengthen it. I could model an enchantment after the spell you describe, then apply it to a pump coated with the metal. Stronger magic. Fewer applications to, eh. Refresh the enchantment. That sort of thing.

[Which is regrettable. Nadine has a knack for Academic Magic. It makes sense to her, she understands it. It's just like a math problem, it follows the sort of logic she understands.
But there aren't teachers or resources here in Cadens to continue her education.]
Oh, yeah, I'm familiar with the Braerium. Sort of. That sounds like it would be great.
[She pulls a scrap of paper and a pencil out of her bag to jot down the spell for Viktor. The potential of blending magic and more traditional tools...there's a lot there. Yes, New Magic or whatever they called it was something used in the Free Cities, but that's different. If she could learn more healing and medical based spells...she could practically be a one-woman surgical team if need be.]
And I might be wanting to talk to you in the future, about medical equipment.
no subject
[Kell could have been in a lot of trouble, and he supposes there's always a chance he'll be found out. For now, he's grateful just to have the knowledge--it's helped him carve out a niche here in Cadens.
Viktor leans in, watching her scrawl out the directions on paper. He'll give it a closer look later. She should know by now that he likes having a lot of projects, so he perks up a bit when she offers him another.]
Of course. Whatever you need, Nadine.
