[ CLOSED ] a very avengers family dinner.
When: beginning of august
Where: sam's horizon
What: family dinner!
Warnings: will update if/when necessary
THE HOUSE
For those who have attended one of Sam's Get Togethers before, they'll notice a couple of things. First - there are no decorations, no extra work done for it to Be a Party. Instead, the house looks just as it usually would, welcoming and warm, sure, but no extra effort put in. It's late afternoon (no matter what time you've arrived) and it is hot and humid (late summers in the bayou, baby) with a gentle cool breeze to keep it from being insufferable. The only real indication anything is going on would be the fact the front door is wide open, a distant sound of music, and the incredible smell.
A phenomenal smell, thank you very much. Like someone has been cooking for hours. And truth is, it's taken some work to really get it going, but Sam has kind of (irrationally) held onto this belief that half the enjoyment of something is in the act of doing it. Never mind that he could have easily just created a fully finished and beautiful meal with his brain (since this is in the Horizon and all), he is here for the cooking. And the process. And the tiny reminder of home. And that feeling seeps out of the house as you enter it.
The house is clean, all the windows and doors are open (with screens, thank you). Music can be heard from a speaker in the kitchen, and it probably reaches a whole lot further than the tiny little speaker Sam's using should have any right to. But hey- he'll let some magic seep in. The entire domain is open to be explored, from the practice arena out front to the tv and various gaming consoles in the living room, to the porch and dock out back. If you head upstairs, you'll find two locked doors (one is Wanda's room, which will only open up for whoever she wants it to open up for and the other is Sam's). There's a third bedroom that is open and looks a bit empty, and there's a vague feeling that it used to also be someone's (or, really, a couple of someone's) and it is now just a guest room.
In the dining room is a large table that's not yet set (if someone wants to jump in). There's beer in the fridge if you're into that sort of thing, water out of the sink if you're not, and every now and then two birds may slip through either the front or back door as it opens - one a red-shouldered hawk, the other a small black raven. They seem to be playing, and may even interact with you a bit if you want them to. Otherwise, they'll either settle in their own perches in the corners of the living room, or head back outside.
Dinner will be in an hour or so - a wide variety of seafood and cajun dishes. And if you can't find Sam, he's probably in the kitchen. But also, this is a family dinner - go meet the family. Chat. Get to know each other.OOC INFO
- this is a totally open post! I've got a TL below for various scenarios you can find Sam, but otherwise have fun, integrate with the cast because we all know they need it, etc.
- Sam's only Rule is there will be no fighting. You want to duke it out? Take it somewhere else. There will not be warnings or second chances. Don't be an ass. This is his home, respect it, or he'll have your ass thrown out. He's not afraid of squaring up, but you will not be invited back if you cause too many issues. :)
- how you get invited / how you end up here is up to you and whoever else you wanna talk it out with. it's possible you overheard and stumbled in, it's possible someone messaged you directly, whatever works best to Get You There.
- any questions? message me at disarmingly

for now, though, sam's attentions are room-wide - so he doesn't exactly notice steve's moment of halted thoughts at the wink. at least not at first. and while steve is putting the pieces together here about nat's misunderstanding, sam isn't really thinking about that - not in those exact words, exactly. but instead on how, since steve hasn't yet been to the aforementioned kebab spot, and now he's just excited about that.
and yes, there is much to say about how steve is the first person sam thought of when he found out about the stand, and how sam hasn't really gone back yet because he'd wanted to show it off, but hey. he can't always be on top of every thought he has all the time. it'll hit him later, for sure.
still, sam eats - but now it's with the knowledge that they'll be getting food afterwards, so any of that fake eating understand settles into the background. when steve turns his attention to the new faces, sam kind of smiles. ]
You mean here or back in Cadens? Answer's yes for both, but still. [ he takes another bite, waiting for steve's follow up question or comment. ]

I really don't know how you do it.
[ All of that energy Sam has, to meet people and let them know the situation around here and extend support, it seems like he's got a bottomless well of it. Steve can lead a team and give a speech, sure, but the day to day relations that Sam keeps up are on another level. It's a difference between them that's always struck him. ]
Here, yeah. Rocket and... Jessica, I think? I haven't talked to her yet, but Rocket...
[ Well, Rocket was around during those five years. Steve feels an affinity toward him for that shared experience alone. He pauses for a few seconds, searching for the right words before he quirks a smile. ]
Well, setting aside the obvious stuff, I know he might come on a little strong. He's a good guy, though.
[ Just don't call him "raccoon" or any similar term. Steve's pretty sure only Thor can get away with that, since he somehow landed on "rabbit." ]

[ he says easily, casually. it comes along with a shrug, not because sam is necessarily shrugging it off, but rather he knows that it's something that takes others a lot more energy than it does for him. people, and the energy to keep contact with them, to make sure as many of them feel that connection as possible, is just as important as...anything else.
they all have their skills. this is just one of his.
when steve mentions jessica and rocket, sam's eyes go to them across the table before he nods. ] Jessica's cool- chill. From New York, too, so you've got that going for you. [ sam's follow-up smile is fond; only some light teasing.
and then there's rocket, and sam nods. he knows that rocket was one of those who didn't get snapped, alongside steve and nat both. can see that because of that, steve's already got a good impression of him, and...well. if sam didn't already like the guy (...racoon??? animal??? alien???), that would have been enough. ]
He seems like it. Even if he did try and sneak into my house as Wanda's backpack.
[ without any further explanation, sam is just going to. reach for his beer and take a drink, trying very hard to hide the way he can't help but smile. ]

I'll have to track her down, see what borough she haunts.
[ He takes a sip of his beer, one that Sam must have handed off to him at some point earlier in the night though he doesn't even recall when, and almost chokes on it at the backpack comment.
With a cough, he sets down the bottle and raises an eyebrow. Yeah, this may as well be the case. ]
... You timed that on purpose. All right, I'll bite. Why?

also, it's just an easy thing to tease steve over. like how elders tend to only have like three hobbies. being a new yorker is just one of steve's. he nods, thinking that steve and jessica probably will get along, and focuses for a few moments on his food.
the hiding of his smile behind his beer goes entirely out the window the second steve chokes on his own, sam's grin wide. ] Maybe. [ a shrug. someone has to keep steve on his toes (and it happens to be almost everyone who knows steve in any way). ]
Man, you think I know? [ he laughs and shakes his head a bit, still a bit confused but finding humor in the situation all the same. ] They said something about him sneaking past my security or something. You're the one who's known him longer, you tell me.

Still, it seems that Sam is just as baffled by this little plot of Wanda and Rocket's as Steve is, so now he has to hazard a guess. He pauses, taking a moment to properly enjoy a sip of his drink before he replies. ]
Sounds like they just wanted to see the look on your face. Rocket's got a bit of a mischievous streak in him when the mood strikes.
[ Does it have to do with being a raccoon? Who knows. Steve knows better than to voice that question anywhere Rocket might be able to hear it. ]
Either way, sounds like they'll fit in just fine. [ The scope of their little Avengers commune seems to be expanding, for better or worse. ]
