Well, it's wonderfully simple.

[People like his friend find joy in natural beauty. He finds natural beauty in the working of the mind. That is why his answer is quiet and reverent. Eyes look towards the stars but find something else in them.]

I find the universe less spectacular than the people within it.

Well, we're in agreement there, but I don't think one precludes the other. I'm a big fan of people, though I don't limit it to only people, no not at all. Sentient life, wherever it exists, is extraordinary. And non-sentient life, of course, I don't discriminate. Big fan of walls and tapestries and coral polyps, for instance!

Well, I am that, but you give me too much credit. The world — the universe — needs more people like my friends. They've always been the best of me.

[ For all that he's overly confident and won't hesitate to make it known he's the smartest one in the room on any given day, when it comes to goodness, he's far less boastful. ]

[Eyes return to the stars. The world - the universe - needs more people willing to listen. To hear his thoughts and obey his instructions. It makes life bearable.]

[ Though he's ever changing and learning about himself, the Doctor is well aware of what he's capable of if he's left alone too long without good people and good friends to anchor him. And he's far from a good man, very far. ]

What would make someone a good man, in your estimation?

[Avoidance. The attempt to minimize and avert a perceived threat. This man knows too little to realise he could become dangerous. Aspecific anxiety, then.]

Good question. Somebody the opposite of threatening, I suppose.

[It comes down to who leaves him alone versus those who would do him harm.]

People willing to confront their problems, who question their own conditioning. They are as good as any other.
