[ A small area of the training grounds in the Cadens barracks has been slightly reorganized for a new recruit program. Honestly, James is still a little surprised that his pitch worked at all, but he's not going to question it, and he's going to grab the opportunity with both hands, in hopes of proving himself to the military here.

It's not a lot, for now. The area has been neatly sectioned into lanes marked by ropes on the ground, a few targets at one end of them, but the main goal for the first sessions will be to show a variety of magical attacks that they might find themselves on the receiving end of.

Anyone's welcome to spot him setting up the place, or going over plans and notes he's jotted down on his journal; or spot the session while it's ongoing, and stick around to chat him up afterwards. ]

[ His visits to the Horizon have been few and far between. Maybe because James doesn't put much stock to the magic that seems to be so prevalent in this place, or he just prefers reality to... whatever this place is, fuck. A simulation, a dream world? He's not even sure what to call it.

But the curiosity is there, and there's a unique opportunity here to meet people he might not otherwise, explore domains of others while they're not around.

At the moment, though, he's mainly sticking to his own. To anyone approaching, it'll look like a line of thick trees forming a dense forest, the light touching the trees dim and fading, as though his domain is beneath a permanent sunset. The woods aren't impossible to cross, but they're not kind on anyone either, the path difficult to make out and at times even covered by dense shrubbery, but keep going and eventually the forest is gone just as quickly as it started, with a perfect row of trees ending near a cliff. On the edge, a tall cylindrical structure has taken shape: white, simple, ending in a dome-like shape that should be recognizable to some as an observatory.

James might be just outside, eyes closed as he focuses on the last details of the exterior of the tower, or if he isn't, there is a small door that's visible once one gets closer to it. At the moment, it's unlocked. ]

Do these trees ever end?

( that's the first thing that nikolai's said since he ended up in this horizon. after james had ended up in his horizon previously, nikolai had decided to go looking for him to see what he was up to.

he hadn't expected to go trekking through a thick swath of trees. he was going to be a mess when he got out of this. )

Are you even here?

[ Calling out helps; James would eventually hear something moving in the woods, but he might've worried needlessly about someone trying to attack him. When he recognizes Nikolai's voice, he easily shifts the trees with his mind, as if clearing a path for him.

Well, he only makes it a little easier. Wouldn't be fun otherwise. ]

Luckily for you, I am here. [ He greets him with an amused smile and a wave of his hand. ] What brings you around here?

Oh, you know.

( now that he sees james, he feels a little more at ease being in the forest. he still doesn't like it but at least he's not about to get lost. )

Just visiting. Thought I'd come by and see what you've done with the place.

[ Since his arrival, James has taken advantage of every opportunity to visit Nocwich, and this month is no different. Three days isn't a lot of time, not enough to really explore the place as he would like to, but it offers the unique chance to see some faces he doesn't get to see as often on a day-to-day basis.

Doesn't hurt knowing what's going on in the other factions. So far, there doesn't seem to be anything exciting happening, but who knows when that might change.

Whether at the marketplace, one of the taverns around town, or just while walking down the street, James will initiate conversation himself. Does he know you? Good. He doesn't? That's fine, he's gonna go for the same curled smirk and lilting tone as he says— ] Fancy running into you here.

[ James's abilities have changed, since arriving here. Well, 'change' may not be the best word to use, because they're the same, but they've evolved, gotten stronger. At first he didn't really pay them much thought, but after having seen how useful they can be in a fight, he's started to think that he needs to make some time to figure out how they work.

Doing so by himself is a little harder though, so he's always keeping an eye out for anyone else who's practicing as well. Noting anyone's attention, he'll turn to them with a tip of his chin. ]
