[ Sam is very dedicated to the project too, so that's why it's difficult to distract him. Jesper couldn't think of a way to get it done which is why he had to outsource. Steve is Sam's closest friend as far as he can tell. If anyone was to distract Jesper from his own work, it would have to be Kaz or Inej, they'd know how to do it. So that's what he has. ]
We're upgrading his space. He would never agree to it otherwise, so Mag and I have been plotting.
[ Sam would just say he doesn't need special treatment or he's happy as is, but Jesper's confident that when he returns and sees what they did, he'll have to accept the gift for what it is. He'd do the same for the two of them, after all. It's not like Jesper will make his suite a palace, he knows Sam wouldn't like to be set apart so much, but he and Mag have designed something that he thinks will be acceptable. A much nicer larger space with the type of details Sam would appreciate and feel homey while still acknowledging he deserved better than a casual room. As the person who started all of this. ]
But we can't do it while he's here, obviously. We've got a team ready to do it once he's out, so it'll be handled pretty quickly, but we couldn't figure out how to distract him.

Sure, I should be able to come up with something...
[ He can't help but smile at how seriously Jesper is taking this, referring to it as a mission and admitting that he even got Mag involved. Not to mention he's got a whole team ready to swoop in and get to work once Sam's out of the way.
But then his smile shifts from something amused to more genuine and grateful, his face softening. ]
It's good of you to go out of your way to do this. You're right that it wouldn't work any other way except for just doing it when he's not around to say no. And... I guess I owe you some thanks too, since I'll be benefiting also.
[ Steve would have had a hard time allowing an upgrade of his space if it wasn't more about what good it would do for Sam. They just happen to be roommates.
oh my god they were roommates]no subject
He does take it seriously. Jesper rarely takes anything seriously, he's a very cavalier young man usually, but he makes exceptions for things that matter to him. This is one of those. ]
Thank you, I didn't have a great second option. He's so stubborn!
[ It's said with affection. Sam is his family and Jesper is accustomed to dealing with stubborn people. It's more a question of distraction from Sam being a good conscientious person. Ugh, annoying. Don't look too closely at the fact that Jesper is just as bad as him when it comes to the inn project. He's literally worked until he passed out at this point.
He knows that Steve lives there, of course, but he grins at him anyway. ]
Nah, I'm only doing his side, sorry. Just kidding!
[ As if Jesper is capable of doing half of a job. ]
I think you'll be happy with the new beds. They're both big enough for two, in case that strikes your fancy.
[ The current beds are fine and can fit two people, but not as comfortably as the bigger sizes he picked out. He doesn't actually know if Sam and Steve are a thing, but he ships it so he'll make hints anyway. He knows what he's about. He waggles his eyebrows at Steve. ]

[ Steve chuckles, one hand lifting to rub at the back of his head because he realizes that he can be just as bad, if not worse. Not that he needs to admit that to Jesper right now, but he and Sam have quite a few similarities, their stubbornness being one of the most notable ones.
And, while he doesn't know Jesper all that well, he could make a guess that he's exactly the same. A lot of the Summoned are, almost like they made a point of bringing in people with strong wills.
His chuckle turns into a full-blown laugh at Jesper's little tease. ]
I wouldn't have—
[ Complained, is what he was going to say, but then he's cut off by Jesper's next insinuation about him and Sam sharing a bed. This isn't the first time that someone's made a comment like this. There was Thor's joke about them being married, Wilhelm assuming that was true and coming to him for some sort of misplaced need for advice, and then Natasha's assumption that something had developed between him and Sam while she wasn't looking.
More and more, it feels less like a joke and more like a hint. A push in a certain direction, a nudge to take a final step that neither of them have quite been willing to try yet. ]
Oh, no, I... I mean, thank you, a larger bed will be great, but...
[ He shakes his head. It's not like that, close as they are. ]

Steve seems a little on the serious side most of the time, although his smiles are very pretty, but he doesn't strike Jesper as someone who laughs enough. Sam and Jesper are laughers, they have big senses of humor, but their best friends are both people a little too serious for their own good. Jesper isn't so foolish as to think that just because he and Kaz found their way to each other, everyone should live and be with their best friend. Relationships are complicated. If Steve and Sam aren't in one currently, they've got their reasons. He was just hinting. A little bit. His gray eyes are watchful, curious at the reaction he gets. ]
I know, mate.
[ There's no reason to cross off possibilities, in his opinion. It may never happen and that's alright too. Jesper studies him, a smile on his lips, but something goes a little more serious in his gaze. ]
I have a dad back home, he's nothing like Sam, but I know he'd appreciate how Sam's looked out for me since I got here. He's become family to me too.
[ From the first moment they met, Sam's kept an eye on him. Jesper may act like he's older because he's had a lot of life experience in his short years, but he's still a teenager, and he probably did need someone to watch out for him. It's not exactly something you look for, or at least he wasn't. ]
He's always doing that for everyone else, and people like that, they don't look out for their own happiness. And I'm not saying that has to be anything other than having a best friend to watch your back and sneak you away when your friends upgrade your room.
[ Jesper shrugs and spreads his hands out. ]
But in case could mean you two finding other people too, who knows what the future holds, yeah?

When Jesper begins to explain that Sam's taken an almost fatherly (or maybe big brother) type role for him here, watching out for him to the point that Jesper considers him family, Steve's face shifts into another of those rare warm smiles. Steve doesn't know Jesper all that well, but he can guess that he'd need some adult guidance here and there, and Sam would have been the perfect person for it. ]
I'm sure he'd be glad to hear that... Maybe you can tell him when he comes back to his brand-new room.
[ Or maybe Jesper has already made this clear to Sam, but it's another reminder of just how close they as Summoned can become, and how even if their time here might be limited, that's no reason to remain standoffish or not make friends. To not express how they feel. ]
But you're right, he puts everyone else before himself, and it's a bad habit. I try to call him out for it, and he does the same for me. [ As friends, he'd thought, but maybe it could be more than that. It's something he's realizing, more and more, that he needs to figure out.
Jesper lets him dodge that whole subject rather gracefully, and Steve nods. It's true, Sam could find someone else. Steve has less faith that he would, but that's fine. You don't stumble upon the right partner every day, and to be honest, if it was going to be anyone—
He's not going to overthink this right now. ]
Thank you, Jesper. Really. I'll make sure to find a way to make it up to you sometime, for my part at least. [ Because while Jesper might owe Sam and want to show him his appreciation, that isn't really the case for Steve. ]
I think we can wrap on this!
[ Jesper feels safe telling Sam how he cares about him, because he's not someone who would be weird about it, and they've both just sort of comfortably settled into a family situation. They're very alike in temperament. The older Jesper gets, the more he's probably going to remind Sam of himself, or other people of him. It's the best comparison he could ask for.
The one thing that Jesper has that Sam apparently doesn't allow himself, though, is love. Jesper has many relationships and a lot of love in his life, not of the platonic variety, and he feels like Sam deserves a partner of some kind. He does suspect down to his core that Steve is that person, but he's not going to press the two of it on the subject. They'll get there when they get there. ]
Steve, you're part of the family too. [ That's how Jesper sees it, plain and simple. ] Distract him for me and we're good.
[ That might as well be payment, if he feels like he needs it. Jesper doesn't care either way; if he had a price, he would've put it on there. He's a merchant, after all. He makes a shooing gesture toward Steve. ]
Get to work, Rogers.
