open. castle thorne
Who: Kyle & anyone in Thorne (+ a meeting with an NPC)
When: Post-Epulum. Bicycle shenanigans start before the storms hit Thorne. Ambrose chat occurs after.
Where: Castle Thorne courtyard, and town streets
What: Thorne is introduced to bicycles
Warnings: None yet!
[ Although the dust from the murder mystery at the Epulum has barely settled and is still fresh on Kahlil's mind, it just so happens to coincide with the completion of a small project he started pushing forward on two months ago.

The castle courtyard is now home to (2) bicycles. Though their use is primarily for Summoned couriers, others who may want to try them out aren't strictly discouraged. One model is a step-through design, the other a step-over. For anyone familiar with modern bicycles, you might be surprised (or alarmed) to see that while the frame is metal, the wheels are a combination of wood and leather. Further inspection will reveal they've been spelled with enchantments similar to the carriage wheels seen in Thorne, allowing the ride to be more smooth than it naturally ought to be. It's easy enough to find out that Istredd was responsible for this part, although the plans and at least one bicycle were allegedly assembled by a Summoned in the Free Cities.
There are attachments available, the step-through model has pegs on the back wheel for a second rider to stand, both have baskets on the front for packages, and a luggage rack behind the seat. They have little bells for alerting unexpecting pedestrians.
There's even a pair of training wheels that can be attached for anyone that thinks they might need them...
Please don't run anyone over, and try not to scare the horses too badly.
If you're looking for a lesson, Kahlil can be approached at the end of the day as he's checking them over. ]
( OOC: The bikes are officially available to couriers, but y'all are free to assume Kyle will give pretty much anyone permission to ride them around the courtyard as long as you don't plan on damaging or destroying them. These are the only bicycles in Thorne so assume some confusion and attention to be gained when riding in town. Horses are not particularly fond of them yet and may spook. )

There are Summoned that come from worlds where horses are no longer used, or never were in the first place. [ A small shrug. ] My world has riding beasts that are closer to what you call deer. I don't mind riding them, but I prefer my own methods.
[ Which is his Gray Space abilities. So the bikes aren't even really for him. ]
Besides that - beasts can be unpredictable. They have minds of their own. Bicycles don't.
[ He pats the handlebars with another shrug. ]
Diversions are good, here. [ He knows what it's like to get bored easily. ] Keep at it and they might let you go to Hayle, get a chance to see what's there.
[ Hayle is something of a mystery to most of the Thorne Summoned, they haven't been allowed back since last spring. Kahlil cocks his head to the side, eyeing Kelson. ]
But if there's ever something else you'd prefer to do, I'd be glad to help.
[ Whether it be working with the guard, or whatever else. ]

You ride something similar to deer? And they support your weight? I admit, I can see where the bicycles are an improvement. They do seem popular, and Wilhelm seems to like them quite a lot.
Can I ask why you decided on bicycles? Did many not like the idea of horses? I do suppose there are Summoned from worlds who have never learned to ride.
[Kelson inclined his head, graciously. Kyle had always been a reliable presence in Thorne, helpful, but not pushy. It was a good skill to have.] Thank you. Your thoughtfulness has always been appreciated.

They can. They're bred to be sturdier than the varieties here. [ Or the ones from Kelson's world. Basawar didn't have many options as far as mounts go. ]
I don't know the numbers exactly, I only figured having the option would be nice. [ He gives him a wry look. ] I guess I wanted to see if they'd allow them here at all.
[ Given how Thorne is all about magic and horses. But more so because of the involvement needed from a Free Cities Summoned. ]
I wasn't sure they'd let me through the portal from Nocwich to deliver the prototype to the castle.

[Now he was curious. How could someone ride a deer? Obviously they had to be built different but, he couldn't quite visualize it. But the permutations and differences between worlds were fascinating.]
So you orchestrated this entire thing, just to see if you could?
[Kelson was impressed. That was some conniving.]

I could draw my own, but I don't know if that would help or make it even more confusing to you.
[ His artistic skills are lacking, to say the least. ]
I guess you could say that. [ He shrugs, still grinning faintly. ] Luckily for us, Thorne doesn't see bicycles as safety threats. [ A beat, and he adds with another laugh. ] That's just the horses.
[ The horses, he has found, are not fond of the bikes. Maybe they sense that they could replace them. Or, more realistically, they're just naturally skittish of strange new things. ]
