Who: Claire Fraser and OTA + closed starters When: mid July through mid August Where: Solvunn, Nocwich What: Digging up stuff, research and junk Warnings: none yet but will change if necessary
[ Claire has honestly eliminated more spots faster because she has a wildly willing digger and companion. This is her first time meeting the seal, and she's delighted. She moves slower not because Nanaue and Baby slow her down, but because she can't help but interact, sometimes guiding both of them to something shiny to dig up, enjoying the exuberance of the experience.
Pushing herself up with a quiet huff, she digs in her pockets for some trinkets. Some of them will go with her when she visits the other settlements, to let the kids dig through her pockets to try their luck at either a sweet or something shiny. Crouching next to him, she immediately has an idea as she looks at all the different rocks, but for now spreads out some gold pieces that she thinks might have been the backing of a hand brush or even a mirror. ]
If there's anything you really like, you can keep it. One for you, and one for Baby. [ Honestly, they can have more than that; she hasn't found anything to make a whole object and doubts she will in this area, but it isn't for nothing, not to her. ]
[ Nanaue blinks down at the array of small, broken objects spread out in front of them, his mouth slightly open as he seems to ponder each and every piece one at a time. Baby mimics him in miniature, sometimes lifting a bead or shard of pottery with an almost disturbing amount of dexterity compared to its attempts at digging.
Nanaue finally selects a piece of brass bent into a half circle, placing it on Baby's head. ]
CROWN FOR BABY...
[ He chuckles to himself at this, and the 'crown' immediately slides lopsided on Baby's white, fuzzy head. ]
Yes, keep. Keep forever. [ Claire grins and then picks through the pieces too, holding up what looks like half of what she would call a quarter-sized flat rock, deep red in color. It's smooth, and she holds it out to Nanaue. ]
I'm going to pick one for Baby too, and I like this. What does Baby think?
[ And of course, she finds a darker trinket, one that has a raised pattern of leaves on it, but no bigger than her thumb, for Nanaue. ]
[ Claire has no idea if seals can choke on rocks but her mom instincts come firing back after years of dormancy, leaping into action immediately. She speaks calmly a patient and warm smile on her face as if she has any idea how to interact with a seal. ]
Not in your mouth, Baby. [ She holds out her hand for Baby to spit it out, not wanting to reach in if she doesn't need to. How much does the seal understand her? She looks at Nanaue for a little assistance. ] Nanaue, can you help me teach Baby that we don't put rocks in our mouths? We can go find a snack if Baby is hungry.
[ A distraction, away from the shiny, pebbled trinkets. ]
[ Baby seems to understand enough - it stares at Claire's open palm for a few seconds before depositing a somewhat slimy rock.
Nanaue, meanwhile - at the exact moment Claire looks over at him, is chewing on god even knows what. He stares at her, then Baby, some dirt falling out from between his teeth with not a hint of shame on his shark features. ]
[ Claire's mouth falls open, then she closes it again before looking down at her hand. Reaching into her pocket for a rag to wipe her hand, she looks at both Nanaue and Baby, using the voice she remembers from Bree's childhood. ]
Only food in our mouths. Nanaue, say it for me, please. What goes in our mouths?
[ She's smiling gently, encouragingly, then reaches out to pat his arm. ]
Thank you for helping me today. If you're hungry, you two should go eat.

REEEEEEEDDD...
[ He takes the second one, and chortles: ]
LEEAAAVES!
[ In one large palm he offers the smaller rock to Baby. The little seal stares at it for a long moment before taking it into a flipper...
... and putting it in its little mouth, as children do. ]
