Who: Himeka, Nebula, Rocket...& you?? When: July Where: Tertiary Settlement What: QUESTIN'! And then an open seafood BBQ thread to others in Solvunn in the area Warnings: They're idiots, but they're doing their best
[ The emergence of a new Old God (not a New Old God, mind you) is enough to garner Himeka's attention for a good while. Though her original theories from years passed about the nature and existence of the gods have been disproved, she's still just as curious about what new ways they might reveal themselves. And one with connections to the dracone and subsequently dragons themselves? Always a winner.
But what can get cooler that dragons? Fish. Fish are the best. And fishing is one of her favorite pastimes.
The Tertiary Settlement is prime for ocean fishing. Throughout her time in the commune, Himeka has journeyed back and forth from the coast several times in part to help out the locals but also to enjoy the fishing. So when the call for aide makes it's rounds that the fishing community of the Teritary Settlement needs help? And the spell from Argus is still around?
Well that's a no-brainer.
And it's just icing on the proverbial cake that two of her roommates are of similar mind! Or, well, they're at least down to help deal with a few roaming leviathans.
Himeka's tail eagerly wags behind her as they make their way to the docks. ]
So what do you think--shall we head out and meet them in the water?
[ Nebula, for her part, still lacks any real interest in gods of any kind. She pays more consideration if they do something to be helpful, but even an eon of backwards memories about a shared life keeps her on edge of looking towards anyone for more help. Save. Certain actions she won't admit to. ]
[ And by now, after weeks of feeling some kind of helplessness, she's itching for a real fight. Something to do with her hands that wasn't just picking up a tool or handling some chore. ]
[ It's almost too easy to jump at the chance to take down a real threat and some ancient part of her yearns for the challenge and thirst to prove herself. Thankfully... it's not a task she (they) take alone. And though she flexes metal hand in personal dissatisfaction, she's at least pleased to have the spear affixed her back. ]
The water makes the most sense. [ She says it in dry consideration, ] Too close to land and the civilians will be more endanger. If we bait them into following us far enough out —
[ Half a shrug, as if to say: they also won't get in the fishermen's food supply, which they needed more of after everything. She glanced at Rocket: ] You don't have some kind of explosive on you, do you?
[ Yeah, Rocket's still not overly fond of gods, not unless he can count himself among them — and even then, it ain't about the godhood but the stuff he can do as a god. He can do without the added responsibility, and he can definitely do without the spawn that come from failing to do a good job as a god.
But after all the shit that happened and being stuck underground and overhearing the repeated chants of prayers from those trapped with them, and after the goddamned goats spouting out a whole lot of godly nonsense, he's equally as ready to start hitting something — and for a good cause too. ]
I got a whole ass bag full of 'em. I left the bigger ones out today, on account of ... you know, not wanting to blow the settlements up. But I still got a ton of leftover grenades from last mingle.
[ They're simple but effective, using all manner of resource that Solvunn has to offer, so they're certainly not to Rocket's usual craftsmanship. They're still damned good though.
He fishes a couple out and passes them over to Nebula. ]
[ The fact that the plan thus far is to lure the leviathans away from the harbor and then throw a bunch of explosives at them should be concerning, but it's really fairly par for the course. Besides, Himeka trusts Rocket and Nebula's aim to be true, which is why she suggests... ]
Okay, then I can hop in and act as live bait, then.
[ She stops at the edge of one dock, putting a hand up to her eye and scanning the horizon. ]
Let's see, any sign of a mass of fish or something dark looming beneath the surface...
[ She won't ever not be grateful for Rocket's preparedness - and pyrotechnics - even if it means he often carries an alarming amount of could be nuclear bombs at times. It's why the question is less a real do you and ascertaining it, giving a short nod as she wordlessly takes the offered items. In this way there is no need to speak - ]
[ - Her attention snaps to Himeka after a quick glance at what she now holds. Mouth twitching at the thought of going you're not bite, but maybe it does make the most sense. ]
Just make sure to move out of the way when someone says something.
[ Stiffly. She'd like to say she sounds less like she cares than she does, but she knows she does sound it. She tries not to mind. Fingers shifting to feel the weight of the spear instead as she considers: ]
Or any place the fishermen are too afraid to go now.
[ Mumbled. ] We still need a boat to get out there. Do they like one of you two enough to risk their livelihoods?
[ Do ... the locals like him enough? Well, they don't hate him, which is always a plus. And their offers of free meals and drink and sometimes the offer to mend his clothing and save some of the metal scraps they come across might maybe be a sign that they probably feel like they owe him for the times he's helped fix their farms or wrangle their livestock so ... like might be a strong word, but he's sure they'd be amenable to one thing at least. ]
We could always just take — uh, borrow — one of their boats on our own. We ain't need to put anyone else in danger.
[ What do you do when you've got a giant ass hunk of mythical fish at your disposal? You eat it! Leviathan is not usually on the menu, and the normal fish fare are much easier to store for the winter if need be, and Himeka is not one to back down from a new culinary challenge.
(That, and she does have some memory of doing the same thing back in that would-be maybe future they all experienced. Cook a leviathan? Absolutely.)
So while the locals and the Summoned are still hard at work to keep the shores of the Tertiary Settlement safe, a potluck is set up along the beach, where the giant carcass of a leviathan is being carved and divvied up into manageable cuts to take home and salt, or prepared on site for a feast.
Pieces are grilled, some are breaded and fried, while others are slow cooked or smoked, while innards are used to create a hearty stew. There is plenty to go around, so take a break and help yourself! Or if you're feeling creative, you're free to take a piece and try to make something yourself.
This is an open prompt! Feel free to hop in, threadjack, and do whatever you'd like. ]
[ the extent of peter's culinary knowledge comprises mostly of pancakes and spaghetti with meatballs and does not include mythical fish, so he will of course be at the potluck to try his share. you can't put out free fried food and expect him to not take some.
but because he can't actually stand still for long, he ends up helping himeka and the other cooks with replenishing the food when it gets low, switching out empty platters and pots with new ones until all the meat has been eaten or distributed. don't worry about it if he slips a few extra pieces on your plate to make sure there's no leftovers.
or maybe you're just unsure about eating mythical fish in general. if he notices some hesitation, he'll gesture to a plate. ]
[ As part of squad Take Down the Big Fish, Nebula doesn't particularly help in the cooking of the meat. She doesn't have an interest in it - or perhaps the skill - and Himeka is always so eager to do anything with food. Might as well let her and glower at anyone who shows dissatisfaction, right? ]
[ Right. Or something like that. ]
[ She's likely only idly considering the food under Himeka's insistence. But the man - Peter, why were there so many? - speaks and she huffs a breath. ]
Not surprising. You can't get go wrong with fried. It's basic.
[ They could, but all the same she believes it just as well. She considers a moment then adds: ]
Take as much as you want.
[ There's plenty. Also Wanda something, something. ]
[ it's basic and that's why it works, or it could really be because peter has basic tastes as well. either way, nebula seems to understand and peter hands her a plate with a few pieces of fried fish meat. ]
Yeah, that's what she said, too. [ "she" being himeka. ] And I mean, that's really nice and all, but there wouldn't be any left for everyone else.
[ the perks of having a constant overactive metabolism. ]
[ She should question more why so many people are intent on feeding her - she does and she doesn't. For now she simply takes the plate with a roll of her eyes, skewers a piece of the fish and responds without missing a beat: ]
Good thing there's plenty more giant fish where that one came from.
[ it's about as much as he expected; nebula doesn't strike him as someone who'd willingly mingle and socialize (he remembers that telepathic conference call with the other avengers), which means she's either here for the food or for someone, and he's willing to bet it's the latter. extroverts adopting introverts, tale as old as time. wanda isn't very extroverted either... so, maybe himeka. right. the brochure.
anyway. ]
Yeah? If you got room on your next fishing trip, count me in.
[ Nebula takes a bite of the now skewered fish as he speaks. Arching a brow, she tilts her head at him as if in consideration. Wanda had invited him into their little call - obviously knowing him - and while she no longer doubts the strength of the Avengers and can find them competent... She still assesses him and thenn says decidedly: ]
We don't use poles to catch them.
[ clearly important, because she's refused that method? ignoring the obvious, a fishing pole would not work on something the size they've caught. she still. finds it prudent to say. ]
[ it's been a long time since anyone's looked at him like that. mutants are common knowledge at home — everyone knows about his abilities and he's never bothered to hide it. but it's different here, where he doesn't have the x-men name to fall back on. and while that's fine, it's an interesting feeling to be on the receiving end again. ]
Well, yeah. [ he shrugs, chewing on his piece of fish. ] I don't think a pole big enough to catch them exists. Unless you make one, but by that point, you might as well find another way.
If by handle you mean like, planting it inside one of those things, then sure. Diffusing it is... [ he makes a face. ] A little dicey, but yeah, probably.
[ oh, definitely. his talents are so far beyond peter's comprehension though, that he simply boils it down to tinkering. ]
Oh, they have. I just don't spend the night.
[ it feels... weird. the eagerness with which the families open their homes to him. for someone who was considered an outcast for most of his life, it's a strange feeling. ]
[ Over staying with one of them, she means, but thinks the subject is obvious enough. She didn't like the forced niceness of the people - but then most of them treated Summoned as gifts from the gods. She's not a gift. ]
The lake's not bad if you can climb high enough to get away from the bugs.
[ Though it does give her a rather unfeasible idea to buy a Summoned house for newbies in transition. :/ Rude their only option is to just deal with it (she's not actually seen either inn yet). ]
[ She snorts. ]
Got that right.
[ But she thinks for different reasons. She still treats food like a precious commodity - starved as a point as she was as a child. He seems to engulf anything. She doubts it's the same. ]
Just as long as you make sure others get a chance to eat first, I don't care.
[ Luckily for Peter, she encourages sampling the food especially when one is helping. He's certainly earned it and don't think she hasn't noticed that even at the inn, he's a serial pantry raider.
Himeka always knows where her food is going. ]
Oh? Are those your favorite?
[ She asks as she hands him a plate of battered and fried fish. (Inventing fish and chips in Solvunn? Maybe!) ]
