They're alright- feels a little like they're just trying to fill time. [ that's when Steve notices the... guitar? looking thing? he might spend time in solvunn taverns but he's not really that clued into medieval musicians in any way. he can barely keep up with Eddie's modern music knowledge. but the guy looks like he knows what he's doing, like he is a little more equipped to deal with... all of this. Steve gestures to the instrument. ]
You should head up there.

[That's the good stuff. New songs, songs no one else can play. Or very few else, anyhow. He's taught his teacher a few songs from home.
But he still has plenty that only he knows in this world.]
Whereas in Thorne, I think they're getting a bit sick of my musical library. Not as many coins in my hat as there used to be.
[He's mostly sure this other lad is also Summoned, he's seen him about though he doesn't have a name to place with the fellow. It's like that with plenty of Summoned from other kingdoms, he can identify them by sight but knows little else.
Maybe he ought to try and form some more solid connections with a greater variety of Summoned from Elsewhere.]

[ but then the guy mentions thorne and Steve's brows shoot up. he knows that he could probably ease into this a little better, could probably introduce himself and make this like some kind of normal conversation, but-
god. Steve is just curious. he turns to face the only guy, notices the hat and the clothes and how he's apparently some kind of known musician in thorne? but also, he has to ask. ]
Dude. You're from Thorne- how'd all that go? There was a coup, right?

Oh yeah, proper royal assassination and all. Got us a new king and queen and all of that. Dunno how it went, we were rushed into a safe room and got stuck there soon as it started.
[All the action had happened elsewhere, and when it was all over, new regime. He can't say he minds missing all of that, but...light, he could have done without being stuck in the safe room.]
The old queen was a right scary bitch and the king was useless, so I can't say I mind the new arses on the thrones. Plus they let us out more. Well, those of us who live in the castle anyhow. I don't think they can tell folks who live on their own where they can and can't go.
[Though maybe they do, he wouldn't know. He's perfectly happy with his spacious tower room, and Jon is an ideal roommate.
Maybe he ought to watch his words more, but they're in Nocwich and the new King couldn't care that much, considering what he'd done.]

But do you know what happened? Like was it assassins or something?
[ he can't help the way that excitement pours out in his tone. it feels a little like a story, like he's hearing the plot to a movie he hasn't seen yet, but also somehow knows someone who was in the movie, too? maybe a better comparison is like finding out about some high school drama - big, important, crazy, but also not world ending. somehow. ]
Wait- were you all not allowed out of the castle before? [ he blinks, smiling a little despite the confusion. ] I didn't have many friends in Thorne so this is all new to me, but for real? Didn't that get boring?
[ maybe that says more about Steve's experience here in abraxas that he doesn't even realize the political implications of them just. talking about a coup. there are werewolves and vampires around them who glance in their direction, and Steve is just. not aware of them. ]

[Which means Mat finds it all rather boring. Politics tend to be. He can only hope the new ones are better than the old. He's not had a chance to form much personal opinion, he stays out of royalty's way.]
And of course we could leave the castle. But there was a heavily implied curfew and trips to other bits of Thorne were...let's say taken note of. Used to be a real pain in the arse to stay over in Nott, for one.
[The old queen had kept a tight leash. Of course, from what he's heard, it was even worse before he came here. He can't even imagine.]
Anyhow, it's all settling down now and I'm not a part of court or anything like that, so my life has been...largely unaffected.
[Not really, actually, but it's easiest to simply say that. The castle is a different place now. He's lost at least one constant in his life here that he quite depends on, or may as well have anyway.]
