( rowena takes another few seconds to study the room, recognising the other woman with her and teleports again, disappearing in the blink of an eye and reappearing a few steps behind julia )
It's not.
( she speaks with a neutral tone even if she's surprised that julia would be looking for her )
[ Julia wiggles her fingers at her and does the same, 'blinking' out of view and then next to Rowena. So they have that in common at least, and she loves showing off magic whenever possible. Besides, she likes Rowena and is very impressed with her. Any witch that's obtained that level of expertise is going to earn her respect. ]
You did! I was going to guess library first, because you know, sooooo many books and so much magic.
[ It was also high on Julia's list for that reason. She wants to get in deep with the books there, they're probably going to be so dense but worth it. Since she's not going to be here long (she assumes) she would love to learn a little more about academic magic as it's not taught in Solvunn. She's been healing and helping out a lot so some library breaks is worth it. ]
So full disclosure because I don't want you to be in the dark, but Dean and Cas asked me to help with the Fuck Off Lucifer protection brigade. Like I would let any man mess with a fellow witch.
( it irks her, though considering that she's already on edge from knowing that lucifer is here it doesn't take much. that the two have made decisions for her, how julia tells her both grates at her pride, and though rowena had accepted dean's initial ideas, had stuck by them for her own safety, this isn't the same )
And you thought I'd want that?
( she doesn't even want to talk about lucifer to the people who've been there with her, nevermind someone she hardly knows )
I don't know, I guess I kind of thought you were okay with the brigade.
[ Rowena doesn't seem like the type of person who would allow it otherwise, and that Dean would know that. Julia thought she was joining a team for a nice cause, not that it was sprung on Rowena. Lucifer sounds like an active threat, it would make sense to help keep him in order. ]
Sorry.
[ She deflates. She really had intended on just protecting a fellow witch and keeping it simple enough. Julia's lost most of her coven and her only other witch ally was dead, so she jumped at the chance to keep another one from the machinations of a powerful hater. ]
Consider me not on the fuck you brigade then.
[ Technically she will be, if she sees Rowena in active danger, but she won't follow her around like a puppy. She's not about to take her choice on this issue away. ]
( there are many things that julia doesn't know about rowena and really, dean should have expected this at some point. it's not a refusal to agree with what she'd discussed with him, as rowena was certainly all for living, but for her, it needed to be very delicately done. now that she was in thorne her fear settled in much easier, leaving her feeling even less in control and that was something she needed to cling to, hence... this. even if she wouldn't approach it again later )
Well... if that was all you wanted?
( it's a small opportunity if julia chooses to take it before rowena leaves, intending to (in some way) calm herself back down from this whole day, or find a distraction )
[ Julia follows her but she will back off if Rowena says to, a little more careful now that she feels she crossed a line without meaning to. She should have known better than to think Dean just understood how Rowena felt and it would be that easy, duhhhhhh, that's not how these things work. She figures Rowena can deal with Castiel and Sam too if they're doing something similar to her, they're from her world after all, they know each other.]
I really just wanted to talk magic with you. Have you seen the collection of academic magic books they have in the library? There are some spells in there that I would've died to have back home.
[ Magic is something they have in common and she's respected Rowena as an elder witch, something she never really got the chance to have back home. Marina was far from the sort of mentor she ended up needing, RIP. ]
They say Summoned here can teach their magic, do you think you'll do that?
( but it was something that she hadn't thought of in a long time. samuel was a special case, something that had taken their bond for anything to change there. whilst once rowena may have dreamed of mentoring young witches many of the events of her life had closed her off to that, making her practice much more solitary.
there were things that she shared, she couldn't help talking about magic, but information and knowledge was often vastly inconsequential compared to truly teaching someone. a student needed far more )
And much of what I know wouldn't be suitable for most to learn.
Do you plan on learning academic magic while you're here? It seems really simple, just straight up spellwork.
[ Not all magic is straight up spellwork so that's a distinction. It's interesting to see that they just have a whole lot of books with written out spells for people to read from and if you have in any way skill in magic, it's almost instantaneous. Julia's been practicing out of sheer curiosity and now she knows a few that will help her out that she couldn't do before and didn't think of before either.
She wonders if that's what Brakebills was like. Just tons of library space with endless magic books and access to more that people ended up taking for granted because they went there. Whereas a lot of the spells she learned in the beginning were patchwork and struggled for. ]
They said there's another kind they do in the town Nott here wild magic that comes from emotions rather than traditional spells.
If a spell is written it can be cast, it doesn't need to be learned.
( and that wasn't a weakness but a strength, it allowed her to use spells that she'd never seen before, things that had often come in very handy in the pinches rowena tended to find herself in. but it's why she'd sought out grimoires and had written down her own spellwork )
If you use a specific spell more often that is worth learning, or something to keep with you just in case.
( defensive, offensive... at least for her. not every witch found danger, but some witches also tended to hone their skills just in one practice.
rowena's habits had become too ingrained in her making any study personal to her. the idea of academic magic, as if only some could learn it, was not a pleasant idea to her, partly from her experience with the grand coven, partly because magic was magic )
If you want to learn something you need to decide if it's useful to you.
A lot of what I can do is just ... well, in some ways, impulse at this point. Magic's started to react to what I want it to do rather than any exact spells.
[ Julia still knows spells and she uses them frequently, she teaches other people on how to use them in Solvunn, and she feels like she's managed to come up with a variety that are useful to people. But the way she uses magic these days is completely different. She's not sure which way is better. Is she even a witch anymore when her magic is drawn from divine power? ]
I was turned into a pagan goddess shortly become coming here. I ascended, I guess I should say. I have all of this power and I'm still not sure how to harness it. Using spellwork is the way I've found to like ... contain it.
[ Her divinity is not a secret so she doesn't hesitate from talking about it, although she wonders sometimes how weird it would come off. Yep, she's a goddess, it's a whole thing. There is no limit to the power that's within her but that doesn't mean she knows how to use it. And a part of Julia has always longed for someone to help give her answers or at least send her down a path. She never had the Brakebills professors, her only mentor was Marina, and that didn't turn out well.
Not that Rowena is required to take on a pupil, in a way it's more that Julia is looking for guidance and that much can be obvious in how she talks, how she looks up to certain people. ]

I suppose I saved you the effort of finding me.
