"Okay, okay." Jayce's guilt isn't something easy to push away, but he gets what Viktor is saying, and if he does believe him, at least there's that. The more significant things he feels guilty for they'll have to talk about separately, but as long as Viktor knows he regrets taking him for granted, that is something they can move on from.
"There's a lot of things on the political end I'm still struggling with, my feelings about us are simple in comparison." So it's easier to put those into words and apologize. Jayce doesn't want to get involved with politics. Sometimes he thinks the worst part is being too good at it. He thrived for a little while there, climbing the limits of power to the top. His intentions were good but that doesn't matter. It's why he's low key being set off by them having a connection to someone else in politics. He sort of word vomited this at Alucard already, poor man.
Jayce assumes if Viktor needs his help on anything else he'll tell him. He collects his sketch book so he can take it hope, holding it to his chest when Viktor says something sweet yet again. He flushes a little in the best possible sense, letting that warmth flow through him. "You are literally making me blush." He might as well admit to it so he's not hiding it, laughing quietly.
"A list with all the things I like about you would be a mile long." That is the truth. Jayce has only a few things on his 'do not like' list, and they're ones that he also understands. Secretive, withdrawn, reluctant to share. He playfully reaches out to pat Viktor (carefully) on the back. "Maybe I should write a few out. See if I can get you to the be the egotistical one." Viktor's teased him for that before, like the night they met, and he doesn't mind now.
Viktor offers a brief, wistful glance that indicates he agrees--everything made sense, back when it was just the two of them in the lab, making breakthroughs and talking about what seemed, at the time, to be endless possibilities. Things only became more complicated from there. He knows himself well enough to realize that it wasn't necessarily Jayce's meteoric rise to fame that angered him, or made him jealous, rather, the decisions he started making once he was in a position of power.
The sting of it isn't going to go away anytime soon. What he can do is focus on the way Jayce practically comes apart in the face of a single compliment. (He knows, on some level, that it's because Viktor is the one offering the compliment--that it means so much more, coming from him. He tries not to think about the implications.)
"You're ridiculous." This time, he does roll his eyes. "Suggestible. No wonder everyone wants your ear--they think they can flatter you into giving them what they want."
He hopes that isn't too mean, given the rest of their conversation, but Viktor has always been an expert in taking Jayce down a peg, when he needs it. With the straps on his leg brace tightened, he hauls himself to his feet and gather his own notes. New braces, new crutch--already things feel a little better. "Unlike you, I am impervious to that sort of manipulation."
Do you want to aim to wrap this so we can focus on event soon?
Alucard is quiet as he hears the full of it. In all of that explanation, it becomes clear that what was created was always going to have political tie ups, and it would inevitably become an issue that no one could truly control. Not coming into things with a personality like Jayce's and not being able to predict some cynicism either.
There's a note of the familar there, although Alucard is loathe to poke too much at it for the time being. Helping and assuming the best. It always ends up in flames, doesn't it?
At least the man can own up to arrogance. That counts for a lot.] No need. It is enlightening, and reassuring that you can anticipate potential problems in recreating your technology here.
[As for the real crux of it, the dhampir shakes his head.] But a net good for whom? For the people here? Perhaps. For those in Thorne and Solvunn? They may not agree, and tensions continue to rise even without help. [He knows how cynical it sounds. Alucard's accepted that cynicism is where he resides now.]
As he told Alucard, at the time he thought maybe he could use his new power to help people, that their inventions couldn't be enough when stacked up against the corruption of the Council itself. It was naive to think he could fix their entire system, but it is very Jayce. He who is determined to passionately push things until it works, and therein lies the problem. The only thing that ever made perfect sense was them. Until he realized they had limited time and then he'd be alone. Caitlyn, Mel, his mother, none of them could fill the hole that Viktor did, he'd never have this again. He couldn't lose him.
Looking at him now he's even more aware of it, wondering if his promise to Viktor would be possible for him. They have a chance at a cure again. That's all that matters now. He laughs again when Viktor rolls his eyes, some things never change, and he rolls his eyes right back. "If everyone was as difficult as you are about giving compliments, maybe." It isn't too mean. Viktor taking digs at him is familiar and good for him in the long run.
Jayce puts out his hand in a silent offer to take Viktor's notes too so he doesn't have to worry about them and the cane at the same time. That's the whole point of having a giant best friend. You never have to carry anything again if you don't want to. "Oh so you're manipulating me. To what end? So I'm always willing to do all the heavy lifting?" This may or may not have a slightly flirty edge to it.
absolutely we can wrap here and say that they chatted for a little while longer
My mentor was a strong believer in being cautious about big discoveries because there was no way to guarantee the consequences. We didn't see eye to eye on a lot, but I'm keeping it in mind.
[ Jayce was the catalyst for Heimerdinger's expulsion from his role on the Council and his withdrawing from Piltover entirely. It is not something he is proud of, and more things in hindsight make him regret how it all came about. Jayce still believes what he said about him, but it was easier to be angry and protect Viktor than listen. And since he doesn't think he'll see him again, they will never get any kind of closure. ]
Right now we don't have anything big to share with Cadens or anyone else, but it's something to think about when we do. Thank you for talking this out with me, Alucard.
"Yes, Jayce. You've caught me. The entire time I've known you, everything has been transactional. I keep you around for your good looks and stroke your ego so that you'll lift unwieldy objects for me."
Clearly, he has been using Jayce all along, but after a moment he relents and hands off a few things, though he still slots a few notebooks under his arm as they make their way out. He does, at least, let Jayce get the door. Now that the sun is down, the temperature is much more pleasant, and Viktor allows himself a long exhale as he tries to shake off some of the stress of the day (and the last twenty minutes).
He locks the door behind them. Then, as always, he pushes forward.
"I'm in agreement with regards to our financial situation, but we need to do something about our living arrangements. Having you sleep on the floor is untenable."
"You think I'm good-looking?" Yes, that is absolutely the only thing he takes out of that reply, although he also just likes when Viktor is being sarcastic at him. He takes whatever he's handed and gets the door. The cooler temperature is always appreciated because he runs so hot, but it hasn't stopped him from wearing their formal looks. Although he has looser clothes for forging. Jayce has ridiculously long strides but he is very skilled at always going Viktor's speed no matter what without it looking awkward. Years of training.
"Trust me, that is financial priority number one. Since we will have pretty regular funds coming in, there will probably be rent options soon enough. An actual bed would be ideal." Jayce is young enough that sleeping on the floor doesn't actually hurt him, but it is awkward and he worries about Viktor tripping over him in the middle of the night and hurting himself.
They could absolutely get a second room for Jayce, he could stay at the inn itself, but neither of them have brought it up nor would they.
"They put your face on an airship. They sell it on merchandise." Viktor sounds entirely disbelieving--surely Jayce is aware of his own objective attractiveness. "You're incorrigible. One day, I'll beat you to death."
He does not go so far as to actually whack Jayce with anything while they walk, but that's more a function of his hands being full than anything else. It's comfortable, falling into step as they've done a thousand times before, and he can already feel the argument of only a few minutes ago slipping into the background.
"We can find you a cot, in the meantime. If we sleep poorly, it's just going to affect our work."
It's not lost on him, that the events of this evening were, perhaps, brought about (at least partially) by their increasingly uncomfortable living situation.
"I didn't ask if other people think I'm good-looking." AKA yes he is absolutely aware that he is objectively attractive. His face is on an airship! Jayce may be pretty oblivious to being hit on or complimented, he probably only notices 15% of the comments, but Viktor thinking it would matter most. "No, you won't, you'd miss me. Because I'm impossible to dislike and you adore my intense sincerity."
And yep that's Jayce intentionally volleying back the compliments Viktor gave him in a playful way. He may be tired but when the two of them get bantering, it's always fun. This was them for seven years, it was just the past week or so in their world that became more complicated.
"I'll ask the inn owner and see what she says, if she has one I'll just carry it up." He wouldn't need help for that. These muscles have to be good for something. "You're thinking that we're being snappy with each other because of lack of good sleep." Telepathic, no, they know each other. "I think we should sleep in tomorrow. To test the theory." Also because Viktor is worn thin and he is the worst at letting himself sleep.
[even now, this 'being the strange kid in love with magic' makes wanda a little wary, but not because of jayce. rather, it's because of wanda's more careful associations with anyone who is interested in magic—in cosmic powers they can't control.
something jayce does have going for himself is the fact that he is viktor's friend, and wanda understands that viktor doesn't want to use magic for his own selfish gain nor destruction.
besides, it must be incredibly character-building to have your life and your mother's saved by a mage. in contrast, her family was killed by machines and weapons—it makes sense that she detests it all. she sees his point.]
Perhaps I misjudged you.
[understatement.]
—yes, I'm Wanda. [belatedly, and here she does offer her hand; a show of more... amiable intent, from her behalf.] I met Viktor a few months ago. He — speaks differently, for a man of science. He also looks unwell a lot, so I hoped to check in on him. I suppose that won't be a problem anymore with you here, though.
[with this bond they have; this unending care jayce feels towards viktor.]
Viktor gapes at Jayce in disbelief for a protracted moment, then sticks out his crutch to whack him on the shins. It's not enough to hurt, of course, but maybe it's enough to trip him up. Make his point that this conversation is growing increasingly ridiculous. He wants to get back to the inn and get some rest.
"I think we both have a lot on our minds." Which is true--but the lack of sleep likely isn't helping. Even Viktor can admit when he needs to tap out. This is definitely one of those times, though suggesting that they sleep in is, perhaps, a bridge too far. "We'll see. I'm not committing to anything."
If he's up early, he's up early, and he'll get to work! That's just how it is.
Jayce does in fact stumble for a moment thanks to the whack and gasp in dramatic horror at it, only to laugh since he was messing around. He is considering that an unspoken 'yes I find you good-looking' answer and therefore going to feel smug about it.
"Fine, fine." Jayce gives in, because making him sleep in is very difficult, but maybe if he blots out everyone option of the sun getting in, it'll make it harder for Viktor to get jolted out of sleep. That's the plan as they head back, exhausted.
[ Neither Jayce or Viktor are selfish in the way they approach their work. Their intentions are altruistic, and that hasn't changed. Jayce's drive to make his city better is a foundation of who he is, but he's struggled lately in figuring out if he can do that. His study of magic, to start with, will be entirely selfless and focused only on Viktor's health. Some day he'll want to learn it all, but he sees magic as the opposite of destructive. It's beautiful to him. Life-giving. ]
Don't worry about it. If it helps, Viktor insists on locking our important work in his study here. It's really unlikely anyone can get to it without permission.
[ If he has the Hexcore out at one point or another, it probably would only work for Viktor too, so that's unlikely to be shared freely. Jayce on the other hand would probably be oblivious about that sort of thing. It's not good practice, but he's not very guarded in here. Viktor can be guarded enough for the both of them. He does keep all his notes with him in the real world, just in case. ]
What kind of scientists did you know before us?
[ She clearly has some kind of image of scientists she's comparing them to and he can't help but be curious about it. He would say he and Viktor are unique, she's not wrong about that. Jayce pauses at the reference to Viktor's health, and it's impossible not to acknowledge it's bad, but he tries to be careful with his secrets. ]
He has chronic health problems. [ A safe reference without the fatal addition to it. That could be anywhere from his leg and back to his lungs.] I'm hoping to learn healing magic and medicine here, I've been asking around. Just to make it a little easier on him, I don't think there's an easy cure.
[ They'll be working on a new Hexcore to see if that could make a difference, while Jayce quietly studies to maybe ease the problem until they can finish. If he can pause the degradation of the illness, it'll be what they need. ]
We're in each other's pockets so yeah, I've got him covered, but I think he'll appreciate other people worrying about him too. I mean, not the worrying part, he gets grumpy when he feels like he's being coddled, but ... usually it's only me.
[ Jayce is his best friend, the person who loves him best, but also, the only person, unfortunately. He thinks it will be good for Viktor, having other people. ]
"Viktor was pretty stubborn about us getting an assistant too, once upon a time, so I'm not surprised." They both like Sky a great deal, although she really is more Viktor's assistant than his these days, with Jayce having other duties. She's brilliant on her own too, so that always helps. Viktor is more neurotic than he is about keeping secrets, which should be an obvious thing for any good scientist to worry about, but Jayce is a little too oblivious sometimes. It's good one of them pays attention to that.
Jayce can't blame Goro for having concerns about Viktor taking on too much and not being able to deliver. His friend was newly arrived here and probably forgot what it was like not to have a partner to cover the places he can't. But he also thought six months was a potential death sentence, so it was all that could be offered at the same time.
"He did accomplish a lot in his time, I'm sure he would have found a way to keep his promises." It would have just probably killed him or pushed him right into a sickbed. That is not Goro's fault. "But I'm very glad to be here, it will be easier with both of us on it." Jayce and Viktor are incredibly well-balanced as a partnership, their weaknesses and strengths are opposite which makes them a perfect duo.
Jayce looks up at him, he's so used to looking down at people from his height, it's interesting. "You're a direct person, from what I can tell, and so am I. Can I talk to you about a concern?"
[jayce is right; if viktor is so concerned about his world, there surely would have been a mechanism set in place so that things aren't just lying around when he isn't within the horizon.
at the question, she turns her gaze away.]
Men focused on building fame and monetary gain from their experiments. Using their discoveries to fuel a war. [and even then, men like tony stark—] Full of pride, unwilling to admit mistakes.
[if there is one regret wanda holds towards tony stark (which are not many, honestly), it is the fact that she could never have a proper conversation with him—get the closure she deserved from what his past actions led to in sokovia. it is... just so complicated.
with a sigh, she pulls away from those thoughts, then towards the issue of viktor's health.
it pains her to hear about it, but she reckons it's a sensitive topic, perhaps more than what she should get involved in. wanda's expression softens a touch, her arms crossed around her middle.]
If I weren't in Solvunn, I'd offer to help with — magic, or ... [exasperatedly:] whatever. I didn't realize it was something chronic.
[and not just shitty sleep schedules and shitty diets.]
"I am certain of that, and yet, I must ask an unpleasant question regardless." Goro nods, cocking his head at Jayce. "Viktor has not disclosed the nature of his ailment. I suspect if I were to ask him directly, he would not answer." Everything Jayce has told him simply reinforces that. He is an intensely private man, and normally Goro would not care one way or another, but there is a significant amount riding on him now. Jayce being here eases that burden somewhat, but Goro does not like to take chances.
"I will ask plainly. His health will continue to deteriorate. Yes?"
A question for a question, but this was to be expected. His upper arms fold over his chest.
"You are concerned about my politics." He answers plainly. "Viktor has already shared his doubts with you about me." And perhaps others, too. No doubt the good Captain has been by already as well.
He doesn't seem offended, by Jayce wanting to know, or that he's aware Viktor does not trust him. He is direct, and appreciates people who likewise do not dance around issues.
It is a completely reasonable question for someone to ask when they employ someone. The fact that he hasn't pressed it with Viktor despite having good reasons for it was either wise or kind, although he's guessing the former. Jayce really tries to protect Viktor's privacy at all costs, but he cannot deny Goro has a right to ask.
"Yes. It is chronic." It is fatal, actually, but he is trying to avoid saying that. Except he was shouting it at the barracks not that long ago, which he's hoped no one remembered. "I am studying medicine and healing magic here in my free time, so he can devote his energy to work. The plan is to halt the deterioration until a long-term solution is found." Jayce is determined and it shows in the passion in his eyes, the strong jaw clenched. He will find a way to pause the illness so they can buy more time for a cure.
Jayce is relieved at straightforwardness, honestly. He is a terrible liar and he's not good at being subtle or beat around the bush either. "I told you that I was a politician, I had a high position of authority back home." He claimed he was about to secure a peace between the warring factions, and that was the intention. And he had the power to do it. Strange, when he's really just some scientist, but it happened.
"I'm not going to comment on your politics because I don't know enough of the situation here to make an informed opinion, but I do know first-hand how easily good intentions with technology can be warped. It's important to both of us to keep our work from doing harm." Jayce is speaking from experience because he is the one who warped their good intentions. He turned their work into a weapon and killed people with it. He's not in any real position to judge, just to try and do better this time. "Please understand I'm not accusing you of doing that, I'm trying to get ahead of any concerns."
Diana has yet to learn her own Arcana, but she does vaguely recognize the pin at his lapel as that of the Magician. She notes it, and then her brows raise slightly at his apology. If she had a free hand, she'd wave him off; she should have been more aware of her surroundings. But before she can say as much, he's offered his help--which turns out to be halting traffic so she may cross the street.
She's a little astounded--and can't help the slight pink that dusts across her cheekbones. Still, she offers a surprised, "Thank you," before continuing on. Diana hadn't expected such aid, but is grateful for it as she's able to make her way to the shop without fear of running into anyone else.
"Diana of Themyscira," she offers, shifting the rugs and furs in her arms. Her gaze falls on the shopkeeper just in the doorway before her attention turns back to the man before her. "Could you take the top few, just so I can see?" She bends her knees as she speaks, keeping everything perfectly balanced but putting some of the rugs in easier reach.
Which means little, honestly; if he's someone from home, then he's an unexpected arrival. Seems he's a welcome one, if Viktor leaves him in his shop alone. She has no reason to doubt this Jayce, so she only shrugs, her comment mild, not really meaning anything by it. Viktor's hardly the chatty type (unless it comes to his projects), and she's perfectly fine with that all around.
"I came to check if he needed anything, and how the last batch of supplies worked out for him. I'm heading out to the desert. Plan to take the mask he made me and try out the advanced air filtration system, or whatever he called it."
Oh wow. No ... in Piltover at least at the academy they really underline that scientists should have an ethos, to not do any harm and only seek out progress for the best of reasons. I mean, obviously we're imperfect and not everyone does it exactly right, but that's what we all agree to when we study there.
[ Heimerdinger may have his flaws, but he did set up a very strict code of ethics and while Jayce and he don't see eye to eye on everything, he did set the stage for the academics in Piltover to be careful. Jayce and Viktor were the rare exception of going outside of what Heimerdinger considered acceptable, and he only barely allowed them, until the Hexcore. ]
On the other hand, the person who insisted on that ethos, Professor Heimerdinger, our mentor, he also has the pride problem. He's three hundred years old and I'm not sure he thinks he's capable of making mistakes.
[ Jayce wonders if he thinks he can now. If he only sees what happened between them as Jayce making mistakes, and takes none of that onto himself. He wishes he beliveed that his mentor could do that, but it only just happened. He had a long time to change his mind. He still doesn't think it sounds similar to what Wanda is saying, he would never allow discoveries to be involved in a war. That at least he's sure of.
Jayce having just made a weapon with their tech, and seen the aftermath of a very bad choice, is all about owning his mistakes. He has a list of them that he reminds himself of regularly.
He shakes his head and crosses his own arms. ]
I'm on it, and there's another medical student I met here, maybe we can figure it out. But if I'm being honest Wanda.
[ Jayce pauses to think through what he wants to say. It's always jumping through hoops where Viktor is concerned. ]
Maybe having multiple friends will convince him that people care about him and he'll take better care of himself. A man can dream. I've been fighting him on the issue for seven years, it would be nice to have some back up.
After a certain point, Jayce wonders if he should be mildly hurt that Viktor never talks about him. It's been multiple people saying it now so he just sighs. "Yeah, I'm not surprised, he's not much of a sharer." Understatement. Viktor barely shares information with him, after years of working together. At least this woman doesn't seem likely to try and magically slam him to a wall like Wanda was considering.
"I'll tell him to message you if he has extra ideas, if I can have your name, but I know we've managed to find uses for all the supplies he asked for." Jayce has gone through them himself. Interesting that he's working with someone who seems to be a hunter, but it makes sense. They can keep their eyes out for things people in the city can't possibly get without paying for it. A good deal.
"Oh good, it'll be a good test for that if you're headed out for awhile. Do you want to take one of my multi-tools? I'm not finished with the more extensive ones, but they can be helpful on the go." Jayce snags one of his table and offers it to her. It looks like a pocket knife on the outside but there are various tools that are pulled out from the sides so she can see there's more to it. Scissors, little knives, a saw, a screwdriver, a few more details.
"Just a few weeks. I started freelance work for a blacksmith on my second day though, so I moved quickly."
"Hello, Mr Talis," she greets him with an easy smile. He's very tall, but she's very used to being around tall people, and nothing about his stature seems to intimidate her in any way at all.
She approaches the counter and explains, "I am Inej and I am here to inquire about having a pair of bone-handled daggers made." Maybe she already has enough to pay for them, but she isn't holding onto that hope too tightly just yet.
She doesn't offer her hand (not really a thing, where she's from), but she does nod in greeting. Amicable enough.
The multi-tool, though-- that earns Jayce a much more enthusiastic reaction, as Ciri immediately steps closer, leaning over to take a good look at all the little sharp implements he pulls out of the main body of the tool, which appears smooth and easy to slip into a small pouch or pocket without fuss.
"Now this is an invention," she marvels, reaching out to take it and fiddling with pulling out the little bits and bobs, then folding them back up. "Fascinating. Not much use to replace a real knife, but I can see it being convenient in a pinch, or if I'm meant to leave my weapons at the door somewhere."
The perfect hidden stabby thing. No one will suspect.
She looks up with renewed interest when he mentions he's a blacksmith too. Ciri grins.
"You and Viktor have that in common, then. Getting right to work. I'd like to see the blades you make."
"Just Jayce, it's a pleasure to meet you Inej." Jayce is used to being called Mr. Talis and Councilor Talis, and it's been nice for him to go back to the basics, being Jayce and that's it. None of that was really his choice so much as an unintentional spiral into unexpected responsibilities. This is more what he's chosen for himself.
"Bone handles, that's interesting." Jayce assumes Lee has all kinds of materials to make things from, he's seen marble and pearl and other options. It's good to have options. "How long were you thinking?" Daggers, knives, swords, they all have common lengths, but he doesn't know what the common one is here. It's a learning curve.
Jayce smiles when she says this is an invention, always pleased to when his ideas capture someone's attention. "Definitely take it out, let me know if you think of additions that might help you while hunting. I usually have seventeen options, but what I look for in them is different from someone else." Considering he is updating his toolbelt, that really is where his plans go for, something good for people working with their hands. Not always something for out in the wild.
The blades are very sharp though, newly so, and they could absolutely be lethal in the right hands. He's always used them for cutting wire or leather, so a difference in priorities.
"I had an idea in my head about something for travelers, I'll ask your thoughts when it's more than a concept." Jayce envisions things first, then he sketches them until he thinks he can actually make it real, and only then does he put it into action. Jayce and Viktor both have instincts for making things that would be helpful, and not always the first thing other scientists look for.
"Yeah neither of us like having idle hands." Or are capable of having them. Work is always on their minds. He grins back at her. She seems great, he likes her already. "Sure, it's actually what Lee, the blacksmith I signed up with, is making me do the most of. Side orders she couldn't keep up with." Swords are generally pretty straight-forward, and he likes routine!
