EVENT #7: THE SIGHT

Event #7 - The Sight

The night before APRIL 18, your dreams are disrupted by a vivid image of the same eclipse that occurred last month. The black sun seems to be an endless void in the sky, growing ever darker - until it suddenly opens into an eye that stares straight at you.

When you wake up, much of your night seems a blur except for the vivid dream of that eye. Whether you find it unsettling or try to ignore it, the image is something you cannot get out of your mind. If you ask, you will discover that none of the locals of your faction saw another eclipse. Speak with your fellow Summoned, however, and you may learn that while there was no eclipse that formed over the world, you were not the only one who had this dream.

Of course, dreams don't need to mean anything. You can't feel or see any immediate effects, and nearly everyone around you is going about their day as usual. Maybe you should do the same.
The Awakening
It might happen that very morning or a day or two later. You could be discussing the dream with a fellow Summoned or perhaps you simply brush shoulders with them as you walk by. Whatever it is, as soon as you make brief physical contact, one of you is struck with a sharp pain in your temple that grows into a terrible headache. It's disorienting and painful as the world around you shifts to someplace you may or may not recognize. Like an old film reel, you watch the events of the past play out before you: the past of the other Summmoned. It might be something they would rather hide, a moment of failure or despair, or something they are immensely proud of and brings them great joy - or even a jumble of several images over the course of a person's life. But you see it as if it were real and right in front of you all the same. When you come to, you'll likely find yourself on the ground or bent over, possibly with one or more people around you to see if you're okay. It'll take you a bit to gather your bearings, and the subsequent pounding in your head could last from minutes to hours.

Or, maybe you aren't the one who receives the vision. Instead, as you watch, another Summoned might grasp their head and crumble in front of you. They may go silent or groan in pain. They'll be impossible to shake out of their stupor until it's over. If you ask what happened, they may be inclined to tell you the truth - that you, you were what happened to them.

Or, if your Arcana signs happen to line up in a specific way, you'll see each other in the shared memory itself. You may also find that for certain Summoned, you can help soothe the effects, calm their emotions, or help draw them out of the memory before it consumes them for too long. It's not entirely clear what determines which effect, but one thing is for certain - within each memory, every Summoned as they appear in the past seems to wear the mark of their Arcana somewhere on their person.

For some, they might experience this only once. For others, they might experience it multiple times: with the same person, with several other Summoned, or with a different memory each time. Over the next 7 days, you'll find the Summoned around you are all receiving a glimpse into each other's past, as if the Singularity has awoken an eye within each of you.

Flee for the safety of the Horizon if you want, but you'll find that in there, it's much the same. In fact, inside the Horizon, the other Summoned don't even need to be anywhere near you - just existing in the Horizon space itself together will be enough to possibly set off a headache-inducing vision.
The Factions
What has occurred between the Summoned will not go unnoticed within the factions. While it's difficult to say how faction officials have picked up what's happening, it'll be obvious they do know.
In THORNE, characters will be asked to remain in the castle walls until further notice. Characters will not be allowed to leave the castle grounds, not even to go into the surrounding city, and anyone who is already outside will be requested to not leave again as soon as they return. If asked, they will be told it's for their own safety, given the Singularity is behaving unpredictably and the Summoned have a unique connection to it. Soothing potions and healers are on hand to offer assistance, if anyone is particularly suffering from ill effects.

In the FREE CITIES, characters will find the army by the outposts show more activity than usual. A higher number of guards will patrol the streets throughout the event, particularly in areas frequented by the Summoned. Anyone who publicly and visibly experiences the effects of the memory share (pain, doubling over, etc.) will be offered assistance by the guards. They are generally there to help, but they are also there to maintain order and ensure anyone behaving erratically due to this incident is properly contained. This might include confinement for a day or two if anyone is especially posing a risk, but no one will be punished except in the most extreme cases, as the locals are aware this is not within the control of the Summoned.

In SOLVUNN, the locals will be watching what's happening with a mixture of trepidation and curiosity. Host families and neighbors will be on hand to help with charms meant to offer protection, as well as general care and assistance (soup, blankets, and so on) if your character seems to be especially under the weather or afflicted by the event. Towards the end of the event, more elders and mages will be out and about to check up on the Summoned to make sure they're doing okay. If asked, the mages will say they aren't sure what's going on, but that they are currently divining with the gods and hope to have a definitive answer soon in the upcoming days.
None of the factions appear to be doing much more than keep a watchful eye on the situation - but as the week comes to a close, officials will start making a decision as to what they want to do and how to handle the Summoned who have demonstrated this unforeseen connection to the Singularity.

Not particularly. In fact, were this all voluntary, there would be...a beauty to it.

[ A world where you could share a memory on a whim, however small or intimate, with friends and loved ones. He couldn't say how often he'd partake, if at all, but there is definitely something warming about the thought. ]

Besides, when I relive a memory I tend to..."blurt it out", as the humans would say. I don't talk about things I would rather not be "seen", so to speak. I know my son sometimes worries about recalling something inappropriate. He's young.

[ There was that time Thane spontaneously recalled a very intimate moment when talking to his Commander...if that didn't embarrass him nothing will. ]

[She knows as well as he does. Jaskier has spent years of his life in turmoil and work, dirt and failure, to obtain the comforts he so deeply desires. He knows them well. The comforts he himself seeks, and what others seek as well.

He did tell her, as an artist, he must empthasize and understands more than simply himself.

Jaskier watches her fingers move across the room, nodding at her back at the comment. He understands. Even his own domain sent some sort of sickness rattling through him when it had been the tavern, as hard as he'd tried to make it something to appreciate. The very part of his mind that destroyed his vineyard was the one that wished the tavern would turn to dust in the wind. It's why this place is so reinforced with the idea that it is calm. That it is welcoming.

He needs that. And, he suspects, Yennefer needs it, too.]

Change it as you wish. Perhaps add some of your own books. [He smiles, nearly giddy. Oh, yes. She likes it. And he can hold it over her heard, next time she's rude to him, because it is a promise for the future. (Not that he is complaining.)

He pats the arm now curled back in his. It is not so strange to him the idea of leaning over and kissing her comes to his mind, but -- perhaps later. A wreck or not, she is still beautiful. And the sight of the sandpiper having found its way into his domain is enough to turn his heart to porridge.]

Fine, fine! Don't get your knickers in a twist. It is not meant to be a secret, only I know once we are there, you'll be loathe to leave.

[He's even more confident in the assessment having seen her take in the room. Jaskier gives the bird a look over his shoulder -- how could he not, when even here, in some small part, it is a piece of him? -- and leads her back to the winding stairwell, which widens for them to step down together, twirling down to a cooler, comfortable darkness only lit by still torches and glowing flowers. The roots of Bleobheris spread through the wine cellar that opens in front of them, lined from stone ground to the ceiling with stacked bottles of wine. He leads her over to one of the sitting nooks, comfortably cool, where a plate of cheese and bread already awaits her.] Now, what are you feeling tonight? Dry? Red? I have a fine one with hints of elderberries.

The lab is in no way impressive, something that's been remarked on before by Mel and Heimerdinger before, but it is what suited him and Viktor best so they wouldn't really compromise on it. They only showed off their inventions to them here, and if it had to be shown off, it would then be moved to a bigger hall. This lab feels very lived in and comfortable and meant for them.

"Yeah, I guess so. Basically, I just created spaces branched off from what Viktor already made." And the two of them can go anywhere within the space so it's shared. Jayce and Viktor didn't pause to think about it, this naturally happened the first time he went into the Horizon with his memory intact. "We would've just ended up in each other's spaces more than our own anyway if we didn't." Most likely Jayce would go to Viktor's so he wouldn't have to travel anywhere. This was easier.

Jayce looks at the crystals with actual love in his eyes but he has good reason to, they are his life's work. "Yes they are. It took years for us to be able to stabilize them like this." He reverently brushes his fingers along them and then picks one up, offering it to Kell. If they were back home, he would not be so free with them, but they are in the Horizon.

"One of these could probably power an entire building alone, really it is an endless well of energy." Even people who don't know what it is would probably be able to tell this simple orb is special. In Kell's hand it will vibe, glow beautifully. "Magic in the only form I could touch, before here."

[ Julie has been described as a very touchy person before, never one to shy away from grabbing an arm or a hand, to pull someone into a hug. It doesn't occur to her to take her hands from Wanda's, so she holds tight, nodding. ]

Yeah, Nadine should be home soon. She has potions, if things get bad. [ Upsides to living with a healer? As many potions for various inconveniences as you could ask for. Julie won't have to spend the night sleepless. ] Are you gonna be okay?

[ She will never want to talk about it. The world Julie comes from is not the kind she likes to talk about, to have to explain what happened. There's nothing left there, nothing except for a handful of survivors, just waiting until the gene pool shrinks humanity into extinction. The fact that anyone else is having to see what she's seen, what she's been through, makes her stomach ache. ]

We should be allowed to go back. [ Jesper agrees. ] They kidnapped us. It's astonishing there hasn't been more pushback if you think about it.

[ They kidnapped a group of strangers, some of who have great power, and no one has tried to murder the people who did it, as far as he knows. Or force them through pain of death to turn it around. Yes they'd probably only get arrested, but still. It's lucky for them that most people seem to be willing to chill and wait for what comes. ]

Julie thinks it's too dangerous to keep messing with the Singularity, that even our fiddling with it to get back could be bad. But surely if it's just reversing a spell already done, it shouldn't be that risky.

[ Jesper is not going to put everyone here at risk by pushing the Singularity, that much he is confident about. If Inej asked him to, he would, because she's his priority, but generally, he doesn't know enough about magic to make a good assessment of the danger. Or maybe there is a way to piggy back onto the magic already existing out there so it's not annoying the Singularity. He doesn't know! ]

Saints look how cute he is.

[ Jesper sighs, looking back at Wylan. Golden-red hair, soft features, intensely vivid blue eyes, all sweet and lovely. ]

He's a flutist. It's ridiculous that I love him.

"I think all people have ever done is disappoint him. Even me, a few times." Jesper smiles wryly at that, but it's the absolute truth. He can name a few of them off the top of his head right now if he had to. "I don't think there's a perfect system out there, though. This democracy included." But systems of government will always exist, so it is what it is!

"Nine! That would mean you're the marvel." Jesper winks at him. "He must've been interesting as scraps in his original form because he's very shiny now." He looks like gold and Jesper loves gold. He knows, obviously, it is not made of gold, he'd be able to tell, but he thinks the droid very pretty regardless.

"And that's part of your powers? The building robots?"

"Kaz makes you seem like a heatwave." There is something utterly still about Kaz that few people can replicate. Shepard has a lot of life in her, the way she talks, the way she moves, her energy, etc. "Not many people like him, but everyone respects him." Jesper loves him. He doesn't even really bother to hide that. Their relationship is not boss-employee or a question of respect. But everyone on the other end of loving Kaz has to accept they may never know what he thinks.

"My skillset." Jesper smiles at her, oh she has no real idea, he mostly keeps to saying he's a perfect shot and everything. There are no visible knives on him until he seems to bring one out of his jacket, where his pockets are hidden. He keeps his eyes on her when he throws a knife to the side, not even looking at it. It sails through the air just missing several people and cutting into a wood stall. He walks over to it and comes back, showing her the point, where a fly has been pierced without him having to look.

"I can do that with any bullet from any distance to any target." He can prove it when he gets his guns, which is soon. "I also have supernatural abilities that manipulate matter and modify types of matter, so I could turn this into goo with a touch, and then back to a knife, or change it to suit what I like." Jesper's abilities are known within their community but not in the public large. He was warned to be careful, and he is, outside of selling trinkets he's made for a nice little profit.

"I'm useful, believe me. Anyone would be lucky to have me on their crew." Jesper says that with utter belief in himself and his worth, and that is part of the package to be honest. Confidence can be a good thing, when put into situations that needs a cool and quick head. "But I can't guarantee you to the death option, because my life is Inej's. She's my best friend and gets to call all my shots."

It was funny at one point she was waiting on Jesper's orders, as Kaz's second, but he's always followed the other two. "But I'm sure we can at least be helpful to you when you need things done, and also, I'm the fun and games it sounds like you could use more of."

He hadn't meant it as an insult. When the two spoke over what passes for long distance communication in this place, Thane had only thought their matching of events was odd. Not once did he consider Shepard to be suspect. Shepard just seemed...like Shepard.

"I don't recognize your face, no. Perhaps somewhere out there is another Thane who would." A sobering thought. He's the odd man out, after all, with Garrus being just as confused about Shepard as...Shepard. "I could be the one who is...displaced."

There's only a brief pause, but a noticeable one.

"The Reapers."

He turns his head from the scene, out towards the window where the setting sun seems to flicker between being normal and too bright. While Thane died with no regrets he still thinks about the Reapers, and how he never saw the end to this war.

"An ancient race of machines that perpetuate an endless cycle of destruction, harvesting civilizations at the height of prosperity. When they had the Collectors abducting humans they were...melting them down to their DNA, pumping it into a machine that was meant to become a human Reaper. While it was a great setback when we destroyed it...we only delayed the inevitable invasion.

That is to say nothing of the fact that they can work their way into your head, twist your thoughts, convince you to work for them...all without you realizing it."

Basically, yeah, positively terrible.

[ Thane won't say his son has recalled something embarrassing in front of people before...but he has definitely recalled something embarrassing in front of people before. At least once, when they went on vacation to Earth.

When they stop Thane passes a glance at the statue, giving it a respectful acknowledgment before he turns to Wanda. He hadn't really gotten the chance to test out how this works...if they could think hard enough about something and have that be the projection. All he knows is that the memories thus far have seemed significant. Wanda's children are obviously significant, so maybe...

[She understands immediately, it seems. No, Piltover is not his home. It's the place he lives, and maybe he would like it to be a home, eventually, but it's been a decade and no one has ever let him forget his origins. Perhaps, in an unsuccessful bid to leave it all behind him, he's done his best not to talk about it in detail, at least until now.]

The Undercity--Zaun--is, it's an unkind place. The runoff from the mines poisons everything. People there are poor, and desperate, and spend their entire lives breathing fumes. If the work doesn't kill them, the pollution will, eventually.

[It's killing him, is what he doesn't say. Still, this probably explains why he'd worked so hard to get into the Academy--the Undercity isn't necessarily kind to the physically weak. He needed to press his advantages where he could.]

But it is also endlessly vibrant. Innovative. There's a certain scrappy ingenuity about it, that I miss. Piltover claims to be the City of Progress, but they are...complacent, in comparison.

except - for yennefer - until now.

the feeling is here, too. that feeling of having and then not. of something missing, though in the memory itself it's hard to tell exactly. yennefer smiles at these women like she's known them her entire life (she has, in a way) but also like she's not quite known by them, either. ]

My sisters, yes. [ which is said to wanda, even as yennefer pulls away from the embrace. even as she smiles, softly, up at triss whose look is more quiet, more uncertain, than yennefer remembers. ]

We all came here at different times to learn, but we are the few left. Losing others tends to create something of a bond.

[ the memory continues around them, words spoken, looks exchanged, a comment about how the hero of sodden could heat a pool just as the blonde woman leans down and lays her hands over it. yennefer tenses again - not quite a wince. ]

The compliment does go right to her head. She may be used to hearing praise along all her journeys at this point, but few matter as much to her as her close friends and family. That's high praise coming from Master Matoya.

[ --It's not real water, of course. While Himeka can breathe under it just fine, it is something of a mirage. Or rather...a memory.

It hits her a moment too late that this is what's happening as they're left wading in the sea. She does change her domain to the Ruby Sea from time to time, but it's a process that usually happens when she's outside the crystal. This is clearly...something else entirely.

Schools of fish move above and about them, the shadow of a great shark taking them over for a moment. But it is a peaceful setting, the sea currents pushing them gently forward towards the bubble of Sui-no-Sato. Yet on the way there, the aura of a small Auri girl floating above the coral sticks out.

[ She really can't argue with that logic. It's the same sort of thing she's been told by E-Sumi-Yan time and time again, and yet...well, Himeka definitely leans on her natural talents more than proper study. She goes with what flows and what can create the greatest effect. If she had spent more time really refining her craft she may become a master yet.

But she does understand the mechanics behind it all. And after training others in it, she's become better at explaining it. (A boon for Jayce since her initial attempts were less than satisfactory.) ]

I'd say that's a good start. A desire to help is the best motivation.

[ Much more altruistic than the desire to become more powerful. (She cannot judge, given that has been her at several junctures in her life.) ]

Elemental and Spirit?

[ Himeka tilts her head to the side. She...supposes that may delve into the types of White or Black Magic one can do? Aspected and unaspected? That makes the most sense. ]

White Magic does controls some elements...

[ Time to show off? Absolutely. She takes a step back, the area around her feet glowing green. It swirls outward towards Jayce in a gentle gust. ]

Air--

[ Then she crouches slightly, pulling her hands in an upward motion as the stone from the ground between them juts up into small peaks. ]

Earth--

[ And then, with a smile, she summons a shimmering bubble to surround them both. ]

--and water.

[ Yet he may feel that inside this bubble, his skin is tingling in a pleasant way. It's cool, soothing, and yet invigorating at the same time. ]

But what it is most known for is "the ancient art of succor", as my teacher would like to put it. Healing.

Whether the man finds him or not, Geralt does not concern himself. He's not eager to talk about his personal memories spilling over like an overflowing dam. He'd have no problems if he never saw the other man again. But he does, and Zhou Zishu gets a glance upwards in return.

Obviously as any true friend, Jesper wishes that he never met Inej in the sense that he wishes she was safely with her family all this time, but selfishly for himself, he can't imagine a life without her. She definitely made all the rest of them better. They're a damaged group, the Crows, but the love they built is very real because of it.

"I thought they were supposed to be paragons of virtue. Better than the rest of us." Jesper genuinely doesn't know, he's not only teasing her, although he's teasing her a little. He doesn't have any problems with her faith, he actually knows all the names of her knives and the Saints she values, because he listens.

He knows how his mother would feel about Inej. No question. "You remind me of her sometimes. It's your positivity and optimism, she was an unwavering person that way." He doesn't know how Inej does it most of the time, but she has that lightness in her, despite all the darkness. And his mother was the same. Nothing could go so wrong that would put her off her belief in things being better.

"He really does. You know he refused to give me parem? I asked right before the last battle, but he wouldn't." Which for Kaz is a gesture too. Since it would make sense, logically, to give his other Grisha the drug so they had a guaranteed win, especially with Jesper's part as important as it was. And he nearly failed it. But though it was rational, and Dirtyhands should have done it, Kaz wouldn't take the risk. It's practically a love letter!

"He isn't likely to be the last." Listen, they might be going their own ways back home, but they're both young and make trouble, they're bound to come together again. And then they're here, when neither of them have had to kill anyone ... yet. Jesper's always ready though, for her or for anyone else. He's not a bloodthirsty man, but he knows when to put people down, and he never hesitates.

It took Inej a little time to put blood on her own hands, but he understood that, and it's one of those things Jesper's always willing to do. Step in to spare his friends. He'd do it for any of them. Van Eck will be a pleasure though. He'll have to come up with something to tell Wylan, but that's a then problem. "You're worth so much more than your skills, you know that, right?"

[That... is not the answer Diana had expected. Three hundred years is a fairly significant amount of time for an Amazon, and even more so for a mortal. Multiple generations of men could come and go during that time. And, apparently, they could learn how to travel to space. She exhales slowly, nodding to show she's heard him.] That is a very long time. [It's the best she can manage right now.] And explains a lot.

[Her expression becomes more and more somber the longer he talks, and her brows are pinched together and lips turned down in a deep frown by the time he finishes speaking.] What purpose could there possibly be for such a thing?
