EVENT #7: THE SIGHT
Event #7 - The Sight
The night before APRIL 18, your dreams are disrupted by a vivid image of the same eclipse that occurred last month. The black sun seems to be an endless void in the sky, growing ever darker - until it suddenly opens into an eye that stares straight at you.
When you wake up, much of your night seems a blur except for the vivid dream of that eye. Whether you find it unsettling or try to ignore it, the image is something you cannot get out of your mind. If you ask, you will discover that none of the locals of your faction saw another eclipse. Speak with your fellow Summoned, however, and you may learn that while there was no eclipse that formed over the world, you were not the only one who had this dream.
Of course, dreams don't need to mean anything. You can't feel or see any immediate effects, and nearly everyone around you is going about their day as usual. Maybe you should do the same.

The Awakening
It might happen that very morning or a day or two later. You could be discussing the dream with a fellow Summoned or perhaps you simply brush shoulders with them as you walk by. Whatever it is, as soon as you make brief physical contact, one of you is struck with a sharp pain in your temple that grows into a terrible headache. It's disorienting and painful as the world around you shifts to someplace you may or may not recognize. Like an old film reel, you watch the events of the past play out before you: the past of the other Summmoned. It might be something they would rather hide, a moment of failure or despair, or something they are immensely proud of and brings them great joy - or even a jumble of several images over the course of a person's life. But you see it as if it were real and right in front of you all the same. When you come to, you'll likely find yourself on the ground or bent over, possibly with one or more people around you to see if you're okay. It'll take you a bit to gather your bearings, and the subsequent pounding in your head could last from minutes to hours.
Or, maybe you aren't the one who receives the vision. Instead, as you watch, another Summoned might grasp their head and crumble in front of you. They may go silent or groan in pain. They'll be impossible to shake out of their stupor until it's over. If you ask what happened, they may be inclined to tell you the truth - that you, you were what happened to them.
Or, if your Arcana signs happen to line up in a specific way, you'll see each other in the shared memory itself. You may also find that for certain Summoned, you can help soothe the effects, calm their emotions, or help draw them out of the memory before it consumes them for too long. It's not entirely clear what determines which effect, but one thing is for certain - within each memory, every Summoned as they appear in the past seems to wear the mark of their Arcana somewhere on their person.
For some, they might experience this only once. For others, they might experience it multiple times: with the same person, with several other Summoned, or with a different memory each time. Over the next 7 days, you'll find the Summoned around you are all receiving a glimpse into each other's past, as if the Singularity has awoken an eye within each of you.

The Factions
What has occurred between the Summoned will not go unnoticed within the factions. While it's difficult to say how faction officials have picked up what's happening, it'll be obvious they do know.
In THORNE, characters will be asked to remain in the castle walls until further notice. Characters will not be allowed to leave the castle grounds, not even to go into the surrounding city, and anyone who is already outside will be requested to not leave again as soon as they return. If asked, they will be told it's for their own safety, given the Singularity is behaving unpredictably and the Summoned have a unique connection to it. Soothing potions and healers are on hand to offer assistance, if anyone is particularly suffering from ill effects.None of the factions appear to be doing much more than keep a watchful eye on the situation - but as the week comes to a close, officials will start making a decision as to what they want to do and how to handle the Summoned who have demonstrated this unforeseen connection to the Singularity.
In the FREE CITIES, characters will find the army by the outposts show more activity than usual. A higher number of guards will patrol the streets throughout the event, particularly in areas frequented by the Summoned. Anyone who publicly and visibly experiences the effects of the memory share (pain, doubling over, etc.) will be offered assistance by the guards. They are generally there to help, but they are also there to maintain order and ensure anyone behaving erratically due to this incident is properly contained. This might include confinement for a day or two if anyone is especially posing a risk, but no one will be punished except in the most extreme cases, as the locals are aware this is not within the control of the Summoned.
In SOLVUNN, the locals will be watching what's happening with a mixture of trepidation and curiosity. Host families and neighbors will be on hand to help with charms meant to offer protection, as well as general care and assistance (soup, blankets, and so on) if your character seems to be especially under the weather or afflicted by the event. Towards the end of the event, more elders and mages will be out and about to check up on the Summoned to make sure they're doing okay. If asked, the mages will say they aren't sure what's going on, but that they are currently divining with the gods and hope to have a definitive answer soon in the upcoming days.

No one is supposed to get their hands on these in his world outside of a select group, but they aren't there. Jayce is in complete control of his Horizon, almost too much so since he forces the place to be hot when he's in the forge even though it doesn't have to be. He's not worried about Kell doing anything with them. He trusts very fast.
"Maybe not endless, but definitely long-lasting. We created giant magical teleportation devices that can fit entire blimps through using them. They can teleport across the world." So they have extraordinary power all things considered, that is a huge piece of technology the crystals power permanently. It took years to complete, but the Hexgates are immaculate now. And those were with the unstable crystals.
"A lot of practice. And a lot of blowing things up." Jayce shrugs. "In their unstable form, they can blow up half a city block easily if handled poorly. It took awhile to create the right type of containment. It is not glass, the orb, it is a highly refined type of metal that took a lot of chemical work to get right." It looks simple, what the magic is within, but it's not in the least. "You can hit this as hard as you can, and it won't break." He is proud of that as well as everything else. None of this was easy.
"But we had to go through a lot of breakable tries first. Honestly it's probably a miracle we didn't end up blowing ourselves up."

He nods through the explanation. That's what you can do when you use magic correctly. It makes sense. The teleportation feat is impressive though. To achieve this using technology and not a conscious mind steering and controlling the process. It IS fascinating. The combination is fascination. His people do not bother with technology much beyond the basics.
When magic is so wide spread and accessible, there's little reason to put time and effort, all the trials and errors of the process, to come up with a piece of technology.
When magic is so revered, people with ambition flock there. They're not filling the ranks of inventors, but magicians. It makes him wonder what it would do for Arnes to have at least one inventor like Jayce.
"You don't learn magic without blowing a few things up, either. So I see the similarities in the process. If handled incorrectly or by the inexperienced, even our simplest elemental magic can do a lot of damage."
He knows. First hand experience.
"I am glad that you didn't blow yourself up then."

Jayce and Viktor are still the only two scientists who do this type of work, but Jayce does hope some day that it will be its own topic in the academy. He'd like to teach others how to use it, it's not supposed to die with them.
"Technology has always been that way too, dangerous unless you know what you're doing. Although it does take more know-how, it's not an in-born talent.
Jayce is great at it but it took years of study and work. Not like the magic he's already experienced here, that feels like it comes from inside himself. He's still kept to mostly only healing, but he wants to try a few other academic spells since he's memorized them. It's such an exciting idea.
"Wait, let me show you something fun." He grins, he's honestly so eager when it comes to making new friends and connecting with them. Like a puppy. Jayce pats Kell on the back in his friendly easy way and walks them back toward the lift. They go down only one floor and he opens what looks like a very ornate door into Heimerdinger's lab from that special night all those years ago.
The key part of why this room is interesting, outside of the fact it is bright blue and glowing beautifully inside, but it has absolutely no gravity inside of it. There are already objects, books and gears and things, floating in the air. This is something that Jayce made and kept, because he is deeply sentimental.
"There's no gravity, you can go swim in the air if you want. This is where we proved Hextech, this actually is Heimerdinger's old lab."

Kell was always somewhat fascinated by technology. It started with his visits to Grey London where he observed things that lasted years, decades even, when back in his home city a current change in fashion could have demolished and rebuilt any structure in days. The buildings in Grey London took a lot of time to construct, but then they lasted. They were familiar objects in the landscape of the city. When his home was ever-changing with only the river and the palace being the stable points of Red London's geography, the Grey had a panorama that unfolded with time, but slower and what looked more organic. He didn't appreciate the drabness of it all. He would never trade his city for the other. But he did start collecting odd trinkets, marvelling at the care, time, effort and ingenuity that went in producing them. Even if even a most mundane spell would do the same task faster and with more flourish.
He manages not to shiver visibly at the touch. It's still an odd feeling for him. Back home, people weren't so keen on touching him. Or rather if they did, even by accident, they usually apologized profusely, and that at the least made Kell feel uncomfortable.
He hated being singled out this way. Here, though, he still can't get used to people being a lot reserved with him. Sometimes, downright friendly.
So he follows after Jayce to the list, through the short corridor to the magnificent door. Pausing only for the briefest of moments, when the level of ornamentation on the door to what looks like another study, stab him with a completely unexpected bout of homesickness. The style is far from what he knows from home, but the feel of it. Kell takes a deep breath to push the sadness away, this not the time for it, and only then takes a step inside. It helps when he does. Sanct! This is something!
"Pretty neat! That's magic I can recognize."
He pokes a floating gear, and it bounces gracefully in the opposite direction. They had floating structures back home, magic to make object weight less for transportation, but to make a whole area like that? That's another level.
"How did you manage to make it affect the whole room?"

Jayce is very handsy with people, it's something he's never really outgrown. He slings his arm around friends, pats them on the back, nudges their shoulder with his. It's always meant well, this display of affection, and he usually pushes at that boundary without being aware of it, like now. Kell didn't shy away so he figures it was not a big deal. For now. It'll never be more than those casual pats, even after seven years with Viktor until recently it was always a respectful friendly gesture.
"Remember when I said technology was dangerous?" Only a few minutes ago. Jayce smiles wryly. "It wasn't the smartest experiment we did. We were desperate at the time. I knew the power that teleportation created, having seen it myself when I was a child. The crystal was unstable. It was the only way to prove it though, so people could see." And doing so meant they were taking a big risk. No one was around that time of night so probably the only people who would truly get hurt were the two of them.
"We didn't make it do this, it naturally did it. We were able to stabilize the crystal to have it function." Jayce without a second thought jumps into the room and immediately begins to float. He swims confidently toward the glowing orb in the center, the teleportation center. "Eventually this little proof turned into a giant teleportation device that whole ships could pass through safely."

Though, Kell would argue that magic is infinitely more dangerous in the hands of a person who did think it through, even very thoroughly, but they just using it in harmful and destructive ways.
He shrugs. He rarely shies away from risk. Sometimes even in situations where more caution would actually be beneficial.
"You were trying to prove a point, and what better way to prove it than showing something spectacular."
Judging where that little demonstration was going. They did more than just prove their point. Kell doesn't move to join Jayce in the air. This is Horizon, so nothing can happen that the domain's owner doesn't allow. Still, he's trying to wrap his head around how this whole set up works. The glowing orb is the source of it, there's no doubt about that. It makes everything around it weightless. The details of how this could translate into sending ships across distances eludes him. Must be the technology part of it.
"I bet you made many people very happy, and even more very jealous with it."

And be more dangerous because of it. Magic on its own is dangerous, he's seen it, but then you get someone like him who used both to devastating results. Jayce is very aware now and far more cautious than he was before. He didn't used to shy away from risk, he was reckless always, but guilt does a number on anyone.
"We did. The plan was to make things everyone could use, eventually."
But it wasn't the truth when it came to the Hexgates. You needed a charter and permission from the Council. Only the approved types could use it. Jayce is more aware of how many compromises they made to keep their work going. Jayce waves at him and gestures toward him.
"Come up if you don't mind floating, watch this."
The gear is an obvious trick but Jayce instead leans down to pick up one of the Professor's books that went wild in the room. He aims right for the center of the magic storm, and Kell can see for himself that it zips through one side of it, disappears entirely, and a second later shoots out the other end safe and sound. It floats toward him. This was the beginning, it took time for them to figure out how to make the same machines on either side of a Hexgate, and sync them all up together. It was an incredible project though. He is very proud of them.

All he has to do to take a step is to ignore it. So he does. Curiosity wins. The same curiosity that made him collect maps, trinkets, and odd mechanisms with unclear purpose. Already, the first step takes him quite high. It takes a few more to get the hang of the way he should move to float closer to Jayce.
The book flashes out, disappearing in the light, then shoots out the other side. Kell laughs. Rhy would love it.
"Impressive," he admits. "How far are you able to send things?"
And people... don't forget about people. To transfer inanimate objects is one thing, to transfer living beings is something a lot more complex.

"That's the really impressive part. Thousands of miles away. There is no real limitation, we just had to make two sides of this gate and correlate the runes to each location permanently." So each gate had its own set of runes, that's how they were sure to teleport things to the right location each time. It took a long time to work but what it accomplished changed the world.
"Piltover is now the center of the trade route. Everyone sends their goods through us and no longer have to worry about ships going down or problems on the roads. They're just there in an instant." Which means that Jayce and Viktor were the most lucrative investment Piltover has ever had. The city is rich, richer than they ever imagined, and yet, only some people really got the benefit of the money.

"So you were able to scale this" Kell gestures towards the swirling storm above them. "To fit whole ships into. How?"
Look, he's fascinated with the whole process. It ties two things that interest him, magic and technology, together. There's no way he won't be interested.
"You said you're using runes. It's not that different from the way I use to travel."
Yes, he just admitted he can move between places purely by magic. It's a way that has its own limitations. He needs an anchor point on the other side, but the principle feels familiar enough.

In it Kell can see how the giant Hexgate buildings are designed with runes all across the top of them, each one transforming into different patterns depending on where they're going. The top of the gate moves, and when in the right position, it glows brilliant blue, like this room, and a blimp rises to hover in front of it. Usually so large, and scale can be guessed at this point, but it is shot out through the ring of blue energy and runes.
While it is far, far larger due to scale, it is a little more obvious now to see how something so small could merely be blown out to large sizes but designed in the same way. "It isn't about the size. The principle of the original experiment is true whether it's a wrench going through it or a ship. What matters are the runes and the arcane crystals, the runes to designate locations, and the crystals to power it. I had many others, not just this one."
The one that is living below them, sparking still. Jayce almost lost all of them when his work was taken, but then he not only had them back, but they helped to find him more. "I think if someone was trying to do the magic themselves, maybe it wouldn't work, but because it's technology, and it doesn't have to filter through a life, it makes it easier." It doesn't feed off a person. It feeds off a machine.
"You can travel like that too?" Jayce just showed him how he created giant teleporting machines, and yet there still wistfulness in his gaze when he hears that. "What is it like?"

What seemed far-fetched to him at first, after the projection that Jayce has showed him it starts to make a lot more sense. Of course, they can scale it if they are using machinery.
"As long as the machine can be supplied with necessary magic, the magic should perform as if the human is doing it - and why wouldn't it - then with the limitation of frail human bodies removed, you can pass so much more of it through..."
Kell looks back at Jayce, eyes lighting up when he thinks of possibilities.
"That's actually brilliant."
Behold the rare moment when Kell Maresh does acknowledge a work of genius other than his own. He's even more shocked that he did it, once he realizes it happened, and it's beyond awkward. Better to focus on the question. Yes.
"Quite similar," he says "It involves runes on both ends, but other than that it's a lot less flashy. More like going through the door that exists only for me."
Technically, that exists for Antari and no one else, and the limitation is on moving between worlds not within the same one, but since he's really the only Antari here... it's not that of an exaggeration.

"Exactly. The mage that saved my mother and I used up the power within the crystal when it was put through him, a huge amount of energy, but since I had no ability to tap into magic myself, I had to come up with a different angle. But a person couldn't do something like that a dozen times a day on this level. A machine, on the other hand." All day every day, and with the crystals able to keep surging and sustaining it, there was no limitation to what they could do.
He looks back at Kell and smiles, pleased as ever for any compliment. "Thank you. It was worth all of it in the end." That bad part of his life, the trial and everything before this discovery, it was eclipsed by the glory of this success.
Jayce is happy that the Hexgates worked for everyone, but he would have liked to be able to teleport himself, like Kell is saying. Sometimes the simplest and least flashy magics mean so much more to him than his brilliant inventions. Now his full attention is on Kell, eyes bright. "Is it difficult? How far can you go between doors?"

"Difficult? No. Could be unpleasant, but that's all."
Unless something goes wrong. Then it could potentially get gnarly. He learned it the hard way. Once and for all.
"I doubt there's a limit other than the fact that I must leave my marks on both ends. And those cannot be disturbed, or it won't work."
When you can hop between worlds, distance kind of looses meaning.

Mind rules over everything in Horizon. It's one Kell's favourite features of this plane. That's why his own domain is so odd and fluid. Why he likes spending time there so much.
