EVENT #1

EVENT #1
Welcome to our very first event! This event will be divided into two parts: one for honored guests, and one for prisoners. There are some opportunities for characters to go to the opposite group's event, so read on below and make sure to check out the accompanying OOC plotting post for extra details!

This event takes place ICly from June 14th to June 19th.

The Summer Festival (Honored Guests)

It's June, and that means the annual Summer Festival in Castle Thorne. The newcomers are causing quite a buzz and, for the first time in ten years, a representative from the increasingly independent city of Nott has agreed to attend. The representative, Lyle Vela, has a lot of political sway in Nott and the impression he takes back with him will affect whether Nott begins to repair relations with the rest of Thorne or moves even further towards independence.

But that's not all there is to do here! The residents of the city surrounding Castle Thorne are intensely curious about the newcomers and several of the events at the Summer Festival have been designed by the mages to show them off. At some point you may begin to feel more like a prized pony than an honored guest, but there are rewards and gifts and good food to be had for all, so what's the harm in showing off a little?

The festival runs all week (June 14th-19th) and the list of events are as follows:
Sparring Contest: Honored guests will be asked to spar in front of an audience. Depending on the time of the week the fight takes place in, some guests may have some or most of their powers back, but the audience is here to see a show and just trampling your opponent in seconds won't do much for them. Try to add some spice to it: a good narrative and a close fight are much more enthralling. You may decide the winner of the fight between yourselves or ask the mods to roll for an outcome below. Prisoners who stay behind can sneak into this event but will not have their powers.

Magic Demonstration: Show everyone what you can do and demonstrate a Thornean magic spell in front of an audience. This should be a simple beginner spell such as a smaller elemental magic spell, some minor healing, a small illusion, and so on. Feel free to decide what spell you'd like your character to perform and post to the header below so the mods can roll for your character's success when performing it in front of the audience! Regardless of success, your character can learn the chosen spell by the end of the event. Unfortunately, prisoners cannot access this event.

The Black Market: Castle Thorne is much less secure during open festivals than it is during the rest of the year, so it's no surprise that some shady characters have managed to sneak in. They're trading potions and magical items, and luckily enough for the penniless newcomers, they're interested in things other than money. They may ask for some blood, saliva, or the chance to perform a spell on the hapless newcomer. Prisoners are welcome in the black market. Please post to the header below to see what item your character gets from the event (and what spell they'll be subjected to if you choose that option).

Visit with the Representative: Near the end of the Festival, three honored guests will be chosen to have one-on-one audiences with Lyle Vela in the hopes of impressing him. Ambrose hasn't had the time to get to know each guest individually yet, so he's asked that they choose the three candidates among themselves. If you wish you have your character volunteer for this position, please make a case for their suitability under the header below! If your character is not running for this position, have them vote for another character. Prisoners who stay behind may vote as well.
At the end of the festival on June 19th, there will be a huge feast available with all manner of fancy food and some alcohol if you wish to get a little drunk. Beware, Thornean alcohol is strong! Prisoners who stayed behind to help out with the festival can easily slip in and take some food and drink for themselves.

If your character has been imprisoned but you want them to attend the Festival, an honored guest may lobby for them to stay behind and help set up. It'll be work, but they can sneak off to have a bit of fun and it won't be as difficult as what's in store for the rest of them. If you wish to have your character stay behind, please post to the OOC plotting post. Because we know that claustrophobic tunnel horror isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, there is no limit to the amount of prisoners who can stay behind.

In the Tunnels (Prisoners)

Good news, prisoners! You get some time away from your cells in the beautiful snow-covered mountains of northern Thorne. A volunteer work opportunity has arisen, and you are all volunteers. If you do well enough at your assigned task, perhaps your prisoner status will be re-evaluated. Or perhaps your supervisor will take all the credit for themselves and throw you right back where you came from. Life's unfair sometimes! You'll at least be given a nice set of boots and heavier clothes to keep you warm.

Your task: to harvest as much crystal as you can from the burrow of a Giant Frostwurm. From June to September, the Frostwurm hibernates and is generally non-aggressive. Huge and territorial, Giant Frostwurms are only rarely encountered and are considered endangered by Thornean biologists. All known Frostwurm habitats are marked and harvested once every few years as the crystals that grow on its body are highly valuable for use in medicine and, erm, recreation although the latter is frowned upon by Thornean authorities. Don't worry, you don't have to touch the Frostwurm itself, it sheds every now and then and leaves a healthy supply of crystals in the tunnels of it burrow.

That's not to say it will be an easy task. There's a reason they're using "volunteer" prison labor, after all. The tunnels are deep and labyrinthine, and it's easy enough to get lost down there and wander in circles until you die of thirst or starvation. The crystals themselves also have a certain disorienting effect that turns hallucinogenic after prolonged exposure and, because of the Frostwurm's unique psychic properties, hallucinations can be shared between individuals. Like a contagion, spending time around someone who is hallucinating can cause it to 'catch'. These hallucinations may be pleasant or frightening, but the only cure is to get out of the tunnels and away from the crystals for a while.

Tunnel cave-ins are also a possibility, in which case you best start digging and hope you choose up. Getting too lost can result in an encounter with the Frostwurm, and while it needs to conserve energy and won't give chase, it'll bite or whip at you with its tail if you get too close. Both prisoners and supervisors are instructed not to kill the Frostwurm under any circumstances, even if it means sacrificing someone in their party. They're endangered, after all!

If your character has been welcomed to Thorne but you still wish to go on the Frostwurm excursion, they can volunteer to be a supervisor. There are currently 24 prisoners and they will be divided into groups of 3, so we will accept a maximum of 8 supervisors (potentially less depending on how many prisoners stay behind to help with the festival). Be aware that supervisors will be in danger as well, and they will be punished if they try to help the prisoners escape, but unlike the prisoners they will be paid for their efforts and seen as having initiative by the Thornean authorities. If you wish to be a supervisor, volunteer on our OOC plotting post.

The timeline for this part of the event is as follows:
June 14th: Prisoners will be led from their cells in chains to a Thornean fast-travel portal (a glowing circle of neon light) that will take them about a mile away from the Frostwurm's burrow. It's cold and the air is thin, so they'll be given the rest of the day to rest and acclimate before being sent inside.

June 15th-18th: Down in the tunnels with you! Characters are sent into the tunnels and can experience any of the effects listed above. If your party makes it out after sunset they'll be permitted to sleep in a tent, if they're lost then they will sleep in the tunnels. On the 18th, anyone who comes out alive will not have to go back in and the supply of crystals will be counted.

June 19th: Today would be the day of the Summer Festival, if they were back at Castle Thorne, but their captors aren't completely merciless. The prisoners and supervisors will be marched back to the fast-travel portal, where a small feast has been set up for them. It isn't as glamorous as what's back in Thorne, but it's the best meal the prisoners have been served since they arrived. And, as a bonus, the guards might slip you some alcohol if you did a good job in collecting the crystals.
Please visit the accompanying OOC plotting post to choose your team of three, and a supervisor if your group has one (groups without PC supervisors will be sent off on their own with no NPC supervisor). This event is designed to have some element of risk to it (but no one will die, don't worry!) so while you can plan what happens to your characters out with your group if you like, we also encourage you to post an action or two to our IC Consequences header below and leave it up to chance. Who knows, something awesome might happen.

Questions

Will there be any mod NPCing during this event?
The three visits with Lyle will be NPCed but other than that, no. Feel free to play random townies, guards, or black market sellers on your own!

Can I try to free the prisoners/can my imprisoned character break out?
Ambrose will be willing to hear cases for prisoner freedom after the event has concluded. You can try to smuggle the prisoners out of town during the festival or escape from the mountain, and prisoners can try to escape, but they will be caught and punished at this stage. Please post to the appropriate header below if you wish to have your character try!

Are the prisoners still powerless?
Yep! Don't worry, inmates, there'll be opportunities to be released for good behavior OR do a prison break soon. More details about the status of the prisoners will be released after this event.

Can my prisoner or supervisor character break away from their assigned group?
Yes, the tunnels are disorienting so individuals may wander off, especially if they are hallucinating. Feel free to interact with anyone and everyone.

What can the hallucinations entail?
Anything! They can think they're being chased, imagine a portal to a green oasis or even scenery from their own homeworld, and anything else you can come up with. They won't be real or tangible so nothing will remain of them once the affected characters are recovered (unless a special mod consequence is given...) but as stated above they can be shared between characters so everyone can see the same thing.

Can my character attend both the Summer Festival and the mission in the tunnels?
Alas, no. Both events will take the whole week, so it's one or the other!

[ they can talk about that shame at a later time, because as soon as sam can think straight beyond the smell and the sudden increase in rotting dead flesh around him, they can sit down and hash that out. for now, though, there are larger topics at hand.

alucard barely reacts when sam answers, and maybe that should key something off to him. he knows by now these hallucinations are their own, memories and moments in their lives being shown off for whoever else is there to see. sam presses his forearm up to his nose, trying to hold off the stench, as he looks over his shoulders. back the way they came. ]

Yeah, back is- god. [ sorry, alucard, but sam looks back and there are suddenly more bodies. more grotesque figures on pikes lining the tunnels. ] What happened to you, man? This is... [ sam shakes his head, swallowing again before he pulls his own bag off his shoulders. it's more packed than alucard's is, but as far as he's concerned, they're coming back for all of this once the hallucination has passed. but this? this takes precedent. ] A lot.

[One day vampire shaming is going to be in vogue. Until then, there's the immediate present to deal with, which first means mitigating the smell. It takes a moment of wrangling the fabric of his shirt from under the weight of the coat to pull over his nose and mouth, but there. That is enough to begin with.]

If that's the case, then we should consider moving forward.

[Not that forward is better. The only relief that he can see is that there is no change in density. Bodies are still spaced out, there is no cluster of death.]

Wallachia's history is violent. [What happened was a woman showed up on the doorstep of a vampire wanting to learn medicine, and it all went down hill from there.

He won't offer an I've seen worse as that isn't strictly true. This is absolutely the worst thing he's seen, and that includes his father's corpse reaching out to him in it's final moments. Alucard's eyes move ahead.]

One of the already excavated tunnels was ahead, correct?

[ there's nothing wrong with a little shaming, as a treat, just for those who deserve it. or maybe shaming isn't the right word - maybe it's just giving someone shit. but they can have that discussion later when they're not currently surrounding by rotting bodies. alucard pulls his shirt up over his mouth, and sam takes his lead, pulling the fabric of his own undershirt up to cover the lower half of his face. it doesn't do a lot, but it's enough to allow him to breathe.

alucard's voice is level, and in a way almost sounds bored, and sam feels his attention drawn to that more than anything. ]

After you. [ sam gestures forward, but with his hand holding the fabric of his shirt over his mouth, it looks a bit like he's awkwardly flapping his elbow.

for a moment, his eyes wander to the bodies around him, before he shakes his head and comes back to the moment. they need to move. if only for the sake of clean air. he asks alucard what happened, and the answer he gets is vague enough that he snorts a sort of half-laugh. ]
Yeah, I can see that. [ a beat, and then he shakes his head. ] So that's where you're from? Wallachia?

[ alucard hasn't always been the talkative type, if you want to count 'always' as however many days they've spent down here under the surface. but sam can't help himself. except that when the conversation turns to leaving, he jumps at the idea of getting out of here. ] Yeah- up ahead and then veer to the left. Shouldn't be more than a hundred yards.

[personal profile] cryptsleeper 2021-06-18 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
[Up ahead and left. Alucard can focus on that much, although left at the moment demands that he step closer to one of the burning columns of whatever poor soul is turning to ashes before their eyes. There's a cough, Alucard feels his eyes water, but that's fine. He can count his steps, measure one hundred yards.]

Mm. The Ottoman Empire has been trying to bring us and others under their control for most of the 1400s.

[The information is only given because it qualifies as an explanation. That Wallachia's rulers have used impalement to scare the Ottomans away from fights (and also angering them in the process) is a statement of fact and a means to wave all of this away. Home is a place of violent times. That he's helped create some of the violence - and wishes to bring it crashing down here in response to imprisonment - is not information that needs to be shared.

He catches the awkward flap. And:]

Double up the fabric, I suspect it might help. The smell's about to get stronger.

[The threat of density hung in the air, and now lies ahead. There's too many columns too close together.] And the passage narrower.

[ sam hesitates, but only for a moment, when his own eyes see where up ahead and to the left will bring him. the fire, the smell of smoke, the acrid taste in the back of his throat of burning flesh. but alucard is still walking and so sam continues to follow.

and there it is - the words that catch just enough but not quite. ottoman empire. and then 1400s. to sam's credit, he takes the information in stride. he's met plenty of people from different places, yes, and some from places that almost feel like home. but this is a different thing, and in the back of his head he remembers zelda's voice. something about multiple people from the same world and stronger connections home.

alright. time jumping. not so weird, after steve. he can manage this.

when alucard makes a comment about the fabric, sam actually listens, because there is logic behind the comment and the idea of this getting worse is already sending his stomach turning. ]
I don't...mean anything by this. [ or at least not really. ] But I gotta ask- when you said the Ottoman Empire and all that. They did this, right?

It was meant to drive them out.

[Or at least drive people out of Wallachia, period. There is enough room at present for ambiguity, for using roughly correct events to cover personal choices, and Sam's questions suggest to Alucard that the power struggle is utterly unfamiliar to him. There's a dryness as he clarifies:] The Balkans are just a route to the Kingdom of Hungary and onwards.

[Onwards. Like Dante and Virgil, except Dante would have stopped to talk with at least five impaled corpses and fainted at least once. Alucard moves carefully, eyes always ahead rather than looking at any of the scenery. There's no change to the intensity of the flames, only the density. The place is a forest rather than a field, the smoke thicker and thicker. There's a sting in Alucard's eyes, and he slows for it.

At that point, he reaches out to his left. Into the fire and--]

I can feel the cave wall.

[personal profile] falcony 2021-07-17 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Did it actually work?

[ sam did what he could in history class, but he's suddenly not very sure if he learned anything at all. the more alucard talks, the less he feels like he really gets, but then again. that brings into conversation the whole multiverse and whatever conversation you want to have about timelines. ]

Ah. Right. Yeah. Definitely. [ yes, he has no idea what that is supposed to mean, but alucard moves forward and sam keeps in step with him all the same. the smell comes and goes in its intensity, and sam feels like he's at least been able to keep a handle on his own, physical reaction to it. but good god he's feeling sick.

when he reaches out, sam almost reaches forward to grab his arm, to keep him from reaching into the smoke. when he speaks, sam pauses, stoping inches from his arm. ]

So we're still going the right way?
cryptsleeper: (arrogantpire)

[personal profile] cryptsleeper 2021-07-17 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
We're going in a direction.

[Which is the dhampir's way to say he has no goddamn clue, but at least they appear to be moving.  That counts for something, although what he isn't sure.  He's pretty sure that they haven't gotten turned around, and perhaps that is the best solace for now.

Alucard keeps his hand against the cave wall, aware of the illusion it must be casting.  Hand moving through flame, through smoke, through body parts.  It won't help a damn thing, but the density of the forest begins to decrease.  The smoke clears.
Apparently the best way to wrangle a hallucination is to touch a goddamn rock.]
falcony: (ia_200000024)

[personal profile] falcony 2021-07-18 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Any direction out of this hell works for me.

[ moving works. moving down corridors work. sam has no issue trusting alucard's instincts, here especially. sam swallows back down another wave of nausea and tries to take a breath, an action that feels a bit at odds with his overall goal of not puking.

still, alucard shoots his hand through flame and smoke and bodies and sam has to remind himself not to focus too much on what he knows isn't real.

except that maybe it is working. sam blinks, trying to figure out if he's imagining the clearing, and he points ahead. ]

Keeeping going. The turn should be just up there.
cryptsleeper: (Judgement by portrait)

[personal profile] cryptsleeper 2021-07-18 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Understood.

[The sentiment and where they ought to be heading next. Alucard, in a better time and place, would remark that his family's tendency to overkill can often be a) extremely inconvenient and b) often literal, but there's no humor in him. He wants out, and moreover, knows it is unfair to make absolutely anyone else suffer through visions like this.

There's a darkness ahead now, beyond where just a few more awful burning piles stand. If it is a metaphor or not, Alucard's not going to find out. He moves forward, and in the illusion, fails to see the overly large rock beneath him.

He trips and barely catches himself, both hands clinging to the cave walls.

Which look remarkably like actual walls now, as does everything else around him.]
falcony: (ia_200000066)

wow that TYPO in my last tag....shakes fist

[personal profile] falcony 2021-07-21 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[ sam appreciates alucard taking the lead in that moment, because something about where they are, seeing his hands move through what he knows is just a hallucination and isn't real...well. it turns his stomach. makes him hesitate just enough.

he's confident they're close, he knows they can get through this just as they've gotten through the hallucinations in the past, but god. if he never has to smell burning flesh ever again, it will be too soon, and the fact he has to say that at all is not lost on him.

so as alucard moves, sam moves with him, close enough that when he trips, sam is able to reach out and grab the back of his tunic, to keep him from falling, if it had come to that. thankfully, though, alucard's hands meet stone, and when sam looks around, it's as if everything they'd been tromping through has just. disappeared. ]

Oh thank god. [ he reaches up to pull away at his face covering, letting go of where he'd caught on to alucard's clothes. the air is clean, and sam takes a long breath before he turns back to the other. ] You okay?
cryptsleeper: <user name="malagraphic"> (thinkin for a sec here)

it happens!

[personal profile] cryptsleeper 2021-07-22 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Perfectly fine.

[Alucard pushes him self up off of the ground (and it is real ground. It is so cold, unyielding, exactly as it should be), letting out a long breath.  It's sobering, meant to try and center him, but there's a quiver to it as well.

He's used to violence at this point, but that scale was uncomfortable even for himself.  Which means that as much as he'd like to just keep moving and maybe get outside, he has to at least be polite.]

Yourself?
falcony: (ia_200000188)

[personal profile] falcony 2021-07-24 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[ sam reaches down to help alucard to his feet, if he'll accept the help, pulling him up by his elbows, and he waits for the other to center himself. he can tell he's shaken, and after what they just walked through, knowing that he's seen that first hand? sam doesn't blame him.

the question draws a look from him, curious, as if he's not exactly used to the question being turned back to him. or, perhaps, it's more that he doesn't check in expecting to be checked in back. ]

Yeah, no. I'm good. I'm good. That was some nasty stuff back there. You want to talk about it?
cryptsleeper: <user name="malagraphic"> (not sure if i love it or hate it but tha)

[personal profile] cryptsleeper 2021-07-25 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
[It's Alucard's turn to offer a slightly baffled face. He tilts his head, because there's only one answer he can give. With genuine confusion on his face, the response is simply:]

Talk about what?
falcony: (ia_200000017)

[personal profile] falcony 2021-08-06 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[ sam does not expect the extent to which alucard looks baffled, so his simply lifts his brows in return, almost expecting this to be some kind of distraction technique.

he won't push, that's not his way, but there's a hint of exhaustion to his words. not directed at alucard, necessarily, but at the experience. at what they've had to go through. all of it. ]

Any of it. The hallucinations themselves, how invasive it can be to have people tromping through what I'm assuming you don't normally bring up in casual conversation, how you're feeling... [ then sam's brows lower, as his shoulders drop. he's been trying to check in with them all, but it's been a long trip already and he's kind of exhausted, so there were probably better ways to ease into this whole thing. ]

You don't have to. Just...wanted to check in.
cryptsleeper: <user name="malagraphic"> (thinkin for a sec here)

[personal profile] cryptsleeper 2021-08-08 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
[It has been a long day. It has been a long number of days, and quite frankly, the dhampir would like to be back in the cell and away from the dangling threat of someone else being forced to take a trip through his mind. He's had enough people through. He's seen enough from others (the blue and pink badgers from Kay's home being the strangest and in their way, actually the most upsetting). All he wants is enforced quiet at this point.

The response is pure exhaustion. There should be heat and something forced and lighter to it, but he can't manage it. Not at this point.]
Impalement is far more a common topic back home than you'd think.

[Which is a true enough statement at any rate, the times and chaos of Wallachia being what they are.

Through all of it though, Alucard keeps moving. As if lingering here too long might invite a new round of nightmares to manifest.]

What I feel is irrelevant. What is pertinent is finding a few holes tomorrow that are safe from this nonsense.

[A break. That's all he's asking for, even if it isn't in Sam's power to give. Feelings, or at least discussing them rather than being dramatic, is a struggle.

But he did manage to articulate a need. That's slight progress.]
