EVENT #1
EVENT #1
Welcome to our very first event! This event will be divided into two parts: one for honored guests, and one for prisoners. There are some opportunities for characters to go to the opposite group's event, so read on below and make sure to check out the accompanying OOC plotting post for extra details!
This event takes place ICly from June 14th to June 19th.
It's June, and that means the annual Summer Festival in Castle Thorne. The newcomers are causing quite a buzz and, for the first time in ten years, a representative from the increasingly independent city of Nott has agreed to attend. The representative, Lyle Vela, has a lot of political sway in Nott and the impression he takes back with him will affect whether Nott begins to repair relations with the rest of Thorne or moves even further towards independence.
But that's not all there is to do here! The residents of the city surrounding Castle Thorne are intensely curious about the newcomers and several of the events at the Summer Festival have been designed by the mages to show them off. At some point you may begin to feel more like a prized pony than an honored guest, but there are rewards and gifts and good food to be had for all, so what's the harm in showing off a little?
The festival runs all week (June 14th-19th) and the list of events are as follows:
If your character has been imprisoned but you want them to attend the Festival, an honored guest may lobby for them to stay behind and help set up. It'll be work, but they can sneak off to have a bit of fun and it won't be as difficult as what's in store for the rest of them. If you wish to have your character stay behind, please post to the OOC plotting post. Because we know that claustrophobic tunnel horror isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, there is no limit to the amount of prisoners who can stay behind.
Good news, prisoners! You get some time away from your cells in the beautiful snow-covered mountains of northern Thorne. A volunteer work opportunity has arisen, and you are all volunteers. If you do well enough at your assigned task, perhaps your prisoner status will be re-evaluated. Or perhaps your supervisor will take all the credit for themselves and throw you right back where you came from. Life's unfair sometimes! You'll at least be given a nice set of boots and heavier clothes to keep you warm.
Your task: to harvest as much crystal as you can from the burrow of a Giant Frostwurm. From June to September, the Frostwurm hibernates and is generally non-aggressive. Huge and territorial, Giant Frostwurms are only rarely encountered and are considered endangered by Thornean biologists. All known Frostwurm habitats are marked and harvested once every few years as the crystals that grow on its body are highly valuable for use in medicine and, erm, recreation although the latter is frowned upon by Thornean authorities. Don't worry, you don't have to touch the Frostwurm itself, it sheds every now and then and leaves a healthy supply of crystals in the tunnels of it burrow.
That's not to say it will be an easy task. There's a reason they're using "volunteer" prison labor, after all. The tunnels are deep and labyrinthine, and it's easy enough to get lost down there and wander in circles until you die of thirst or starvation. The crystals themselves also have a certain disorienting effect that turns hallucinogenic after prolonged exposure and, because of the Frostwurm's unique psychic properties, hallucinations can be shared between individuals. Like a contagion, spending time around someone who is hallucinating can cause it to 'catch'. These hallucinations may be pleasant or frightening, but the only cure is to get out of the tunnels and away from the crystals for a while.
Tunnel cave-ins are also a possibility, in which case you best start digging and hope you choose up. Getting too lost can result in an encounter with the Frostwurm, and while it needs to conserve energy and won't give chase, it'll bite or whip at you with its tail if you get too close. Both prisoners and supervisors are instructed not to kill the Frostwurm under any circumstances, even if it means sacrificing someone in their party. They're endangered, after all!
If your character has been welcomed to Thorne but you still wish to go on the Frostwurm excursion, they can volunteer to be a supervisor. There are currently 24 prisoners and they will be divided into groups of 3, so we will accept a maximum of 8 supervisors (potentially less depending on how many prisoners stay behind to help with the festival). Be aware that supervisors will be in danger as well, and they will be punished if they try to help the prisoners escape, but unlike the prisoners they will be paid for their efforts and seen as having initiative by the Thornean authorities. If you wish to be a supervisor, volunteer on our OOC plotting post.
The timeline for this part of the event is as follows:
Questions
Will there be any mod NPCing during this event?
The three visits with Lyle will be NPCed but other than that, no. Feel free to play random townies, guards, or black market sellers on your own!
Can I try to free the prisoners/can my imprisoned character break out?
Ambrose will be willing to hear cases for prisoner freedom after the event has concluded. You can try to smuggle the prisoners out of town during the festival or escape from the mountain, and prisoners can try to escape, but they will be caught and punished at this stage. Please post to the appropriate header below if you wish to have your character try!
Are the prisoners still powerless?
Yep! Don't worry, inmates, there'll be opportunities to be released for good behavior OR do a prison break soon. More details about the status of the prisoners will be released after this event.
Can my prisoner or supervisor character break away from their assigned group?
Yes, the tunnels are disorienting so individuals may wander off, especially if they are hallucinating. Feel free to interact with anyone and everyone.
What can the hallucinations entail?
Anything! They can think they're being chased, imagine a portal to a green oasis or even scenery from their own homeworld, and anything else you can come up with. They won't be real or tangible so nothing will remain of them once the affected characters are recovered (unless a special mod consequence is given...) but as stated above they can be shared between characters so everyone can see the same thing.
Can my character attend both the Summer Festival and the mission in the tunnels?
Alas, no. Both events will take the whole week, so it's one or the other!
This event takes place ICly from June 14th to June 19th.
The Summer Festival (Honored Guests)
Sparring Contest: Honored guests will be asked to spar in front of an audience. Depending on the time of the week the fight takes place in, some guests may have some or most of their powers back, but the audience is here to see a show and just trampling your opponent in seconds won't do much for them. Try to add some spice to it: a good narrative and a close fight are much more enthralling. You may decide the winner of the fight between yourselves or ask the mods to roll for an outcome below. Prisoners who stay behind can sneak into this event but will not have their powers. At the end of the festival on June 19th, there will be a huge feast available with all manner of fancy food and some alcohol if you wish to get a little drunk. Beware, Thornean alcohol is strong! Prisoners who stayed behind to help out with the festival can easily slip in and take some food and drink for themselves.
Magic Demonstration: Show everyone what you can do and demonstrate a Thornean magic spell in front of an audience. This should be a simple beginner spell such as a smaller elemental magic spell, some minor healing, a small illusion, and so on. Feel free to decide what spell you'd like your character to perform and post to the header below so the mods can roll for your character's success when performing it in front of the audience! Regardless of success, your character can learn the chosen spell by the end of the event. Unfortunately, prisoners cannot access this event.
The Black Market: Castle Thorne is much less secure during open festivals than it is during the rest of the year, so it's no surprise that some shady characters have managed to sneak in. They're trading potions and magical items, and luckily enough for the penniless newcomers, they're interested in things other than money. They may ask for some blood, saliva, or the chance to perform a spell on the hapless newcomer. Prisoners are welcome in the black market. Please post to the header below to see what item your character gets from the event (and what spell they'll be subjected to if you choose that option).
Visit with the Representative: Near the end of the Festival, three honored guests will be chosen to have one-on-one audiences with Lyle Vela in the hopes of impressing him. Ambrose hasn't had the time to get to know each guest individually yet, so he's asked that they choose the three candidates among themselves. If you wish you have your character volunteer for this position, please make a case for their suitability under the header below! If your character is not running for this position, have them vote for another character. Prisoners who stay behind may vote as well.

If you wish to be a supervisor, volunteer on our OOC plotting post.
The timeline for this part of the event is as follows:
June 14th: Prisoners will be led from their cells in chains to a Thornean fast-travel portal (a glowing circle of neon light) that will take them about a mile away from the Frostwurm's burrow. It's cold and the air is thin, so they'll be given the rest of the day to rest and acclimate before being sent inside. Please visit the accompanying OOC plotting post to choose your team of three, and a supervisor if your group has one (groups without PC supervisors will be sent off on their own with no NPC supervisor). This event is designed to have some element of risk to it (but no one will die, don't worry!) so while you can plan what happens to your characters out with your group if you like, we also encourage you to post an action or two to our IC Consequences header below and leave it up to chance. Who knows, something awesome might happen.
June 15th-18th: Down in the tunnels with you! Characters are sent into the tunnels and can experience any of the effects listed above. If your party makes it out after sunset they'll be permitted to sleep in a tent, if they're lost then they will sleep in the tunnels. On the 18th, anyone who comes out alive will not have to go back in and the supply of crystals will be counted.
June 19th: Today would be the day of the Summer Festival, if they were back at Castle Thorne, but their captors aren't completely merciless. The prisoners and supervisors will be marched back to the fast-travel portal, where a small feast has been set up for them. It isn't as glamorous as what's back in Thorne, but it's the best meal the prisoners have been served since they arrived. And, as a bonus, the guards might slip you some alcohol if you did a good job in collecting the crystals.

IN THE TUNNELS
Please don't reply here until your thread has hit the point where you are ready to have us intervene! This is both for the sake of not overloading the mods with hypothetical requests, and so you have the flexibility to change course if your thread ends up going differently than you thought.
This is an optional feature and you're free to decide your own outcomes in any of these situations (although your characters cannot successfully escape), but something fun might happen if you leave it to us! This option also risks injury and negative consequences, so be aware of that. You can reply here as many times as you like!
Re: IN THE TUNNELS
Jesper is going to end up alone in the tunnels in one of his threads, then try to make a run for it because he's already lost anyway. The thread that will lead up to him being alone is going to play out slowly OOCly. That's fine, I am all for back tagging forever. However, since he will end up on his own, would it be possible to get an idea what might befall him (even if it's just, he wanders alone for a day then finds the camp again) so I can figure out for additional threads if he'll be at the Summer Festival 'feast' for the prisoners or not?
Re: IN THE TUNNELS
Jesper is lost in the tunnels until mid-day on the 19th and must sustain a minor injury (such as a pulled muscle or a cut that needs to be cleaned and bandaged, unfortunately healers are not wasted on prisoners who have already outlived their usefulness so it'll take a week or so to fully recover), as well as some degree of delirium and dehydration for a few hours afterwards. He can still go to the feast!
Deep in the tunnels beside a fallen crystal, he also finds a ring with a bright, multicolored jewel in the center. The initials carved into the bottom of the ring are "E.F.". It casts rainbows like a prism when the light shines on it just right. He can: pocket the ring and keep it for later (he won't be searched as they weren't expected to find anything in the caves other than crystals), give it to another prisoner or one of the supervisors, leave it where it is, or hand it in to the Thornean guards for a reward. Let us know what he does!

Escape to Hayle
In summary: after hiding in the caves and stretching out their food supply as much as possible they started roughing it down the mountainside, eventually ending up on the border of Hayle. We're currently at the part where they've paused there to discuss plans, but through some OOC discussion we've worked out that they are going to enter the city using their blankets as cloaks to hide their prison clothes (and in Estinien and Himeka's case to hide their weird features) to try to get some supplies.
**LAST EDIT I SWEAR: Actually we have a burst of threading this afternoon and got them to the point where they are all entering the city. Eponine is going first, Estinien is following a distance after, and then Himeka is following him. Estinien and Himeka will be hiding in alleyways in stuff while Eponine does her business, communicating back to them with auditory signals.
Eponine: Is going to spearhead the attempt to try to steal a hunting knife and something that could be used as a cooking pot. She's sneaky, used to stealing, and tends to blend in as the type of poor person that others would rather ignore. She's the one that is actually going to be getting closer to locals because she looks like a normal human. When they eventually get caught she is going to try to play the victim and blame Estinien with some sort of tale about how he forced her to do it. She will try to run and make it difficult for them, though.
Himeka: Is driven to try to speak to locals and get assistance from them, but Estinien has talked her down to getting a lay of the city first. When they are confronted by guards she will be inclined to resist but will also be mindful in avoiding getting anyone hurt as a result, whether that be civilians or Estinien/Eponine.
Estinien: Is very wary about approaching anyone or letting themselves be seen any more than necessary, but he's compromising enough with Himeka to at least attempt to have a look around. He's covering his ears and has his shovel/some sharp crystals with him. When faced with guards trying to capture any of them he is going to choose violence and attempt to subdue them (mostly by hitting them with his stolen shovel) and will be disinclined to surrender.
In terms of information from the mods it would be helpful to get a little information about Hayle and to know what sort of situation/punishment they'll be facing as a result based on the info above.
For Estinien I'm open to any kind of harsh punishment (and he'll be trying to take the fall as the ringleader of this escape, though Himeka won't let him without a fight) as long as it doesn't get him killed/make him completely unplayable for the next event. My long-term goal is to get Estinien as pissed off at Thorne as possible because it will make a great plot arc for him when he's eventually freed. Rosie and Freya are down for whatever punishment-wise, too.

Hayle is quite populous, and they will be able to blend in quite easily for a while. The biggest issue they'd face when attempting to get supplies would be that some people are rather dismissive of street folk and beggars, but they can eventually get them (or steal them). It's easy to get lost in the crowd here, and at this time of year the weather is so nice that there are market stalls and street performers everywhere.
Aesthetically, the wealthy parts of Hayle are a lot like Castle Thorne: well-decorated and clean, with lots of tall towers and the massive, fortress-like university in the far north. A network of semi-transparent tunnels made of a crystal-like material cover the city like a spider's web, although they aren't being used as much as they would in the winter.
The poorer parts of the city are a little worn down, though they are still decorated (and often with more variety than the wealthier parts of town - think graffiti and other street artists who have more creative freedom to deviate from traditional styles of art). A lot of businesses there are connected by underground tunnels full of rats, spiders, and other creepy crawlies, but they can be good places to hide in a pinch. The average local is not on high alert and will treat them as they would any other resident of Hayle (which is to say, some will be nice and some will want nothing to do with them). Unfortunately, most of them aren't in the business of being charitable so they'll expect money or work in exchange for services.
When they are noticed, it'll be by a higher-ranking mage and commander of the guards on routine patrol, and this mage recognizes them immediately. If they listen in closely enough they'll find that along with stripping them of their powers, Ambrose has branded them as enemies of Thorne in a way that can be divined by other mages much like their arcana. They can put up a fight and hurt some of the guards if you wish.
The person who is finally able to apprehend them is a powerful mage who came running as soon as she was alerted to the presence of the escaped prisoners: the Duchess of Hayle herself, Ambrose's older sister Anastasia Rhett. Oddly enough, she seems to have some disdain for the way the situation with the newcomers and the prisoners is being handled (and for the whole summoning ritual as a whole, and the fact that Ambrose has wormed his way into the good graces of the Royal Court to the extent that they let him perform it). She's as stern and cold as Ambrose is and no one would mistake her for a kind woman, but she doesn't seem to have any interest in subjecting the escaped prisoners to unnecessary torment (and has a lot of ill will towards her brother).
She has no choice but to return them to captivity as letting them go would be considered treason, but she will offer them some good food and drink and is willing to answer some questions as they're hauled away to the nearest fast travel portal to Castle Thorne.
They will be placed in solitary confinement upon their return, which you can choose to last anywhere from a minimum of five days to a maximum of the start of Event #2, where they will be dragged out along with the rest of the prisoners regardless. They will not be allowed to communicate with any other prisoners in solitary, the guards will give them a mediocre meal once per day (essentially, table scraps) and they will not be told how long they are going to be kept there. Good ol' psychological warfare!
Each of your characters can ask Anastasia a question if they wish, with room for some follow-up questions afterwards. Let us know what you want to ask, and if you have any other questions about anything here.
general questions
2) When Anastasia catches them is it basically using magic to bind them like it had been in the castle? Are they chained up like they were before as they are brought to the fast travel portal? (This question is entirely for flavour, tbh.)
3) Are they seen by Ambrose at all when they are brought back to the castle, and if so, how does he seem to react? (If not, is it pretty much just straight from the portal to solitary with the guards?)
4) Are the solitary confinement cells furnished the same way as the shared cells or are they worse that way, too? Does the "one meal per day" aspect apply to water as well?
These are all just flavour text kinds of questions really. I'm going to submit his question to Anastasia in a separate thread to keep things neat. Thanks for the response, mods, and thanks for letting us take this so far! This is a lot more plot information than I was expecting to get.

2. They will be magically bound at first and then re-chained.
3. Ambrose will be there, but he seems more disgusted to see the guards from Hayle than anything. He knows he's going to be hearing about this later. He will not talk to the prisoners.
4. The solitary cells only have one bed, and it's pretty much just a stone slab. They will be given enough water not to dehydrate but they better not waste it.

1.) Is the fact that these prisoners escaped and were recaptured going to be made known to the other prisoners and/or other outsiders? Mostly curious from the perspective of how it may help facilitate new CR/threads after the fact.
2.) Would they be treated any differently by the NPC guards once they are returned to their cells? I.E. considered "high risk" or are they assumed to have learned their lessons from solitary?
3.) As for Hayle itself, is there a general mood to the city in how it feels about the Royal Court and it's activities with the summonings, if any? Maybe discussions they may have overheard while slinking about or trying to play friendly with NPCs for supplies? (I Imagine this may also change depending on the social status of the people too.)
I will be hitting up separately with Himeka's IC question since she's the sort to see what everyone else had to say first in this matter. Thank you again!

1) if they shout/bang etc enough in solitary, can they attract the attention of free characters? Can they shout to each other?
2) after the next event, are they put back in their regular cells?
As for her question to Anastasia, Eponine’s going to go down a route of genuine flattery, complimenting the attractiveness of the city as well as Anastasia herself. She’ll ask,
“Madame, if you please, but why? Can they tell I am wicked just by a look? Why did they lock me away? I hadn’t done nothing wrong here, for it was so soon as I came.”
She’ll follow up, no matter Anastasia’s answer with, “please don’t let him send me back to Paris, for my death is slow, Ma’am. Let me stay. Oh please, Ma’am, let me stay here. Don’t send me back. They shall yell and shout and slap and push if we do. Please let me stay.”
And no matter what, her final remark will be “don’t forget your Ponine, Madame. Remember me, please ”
MOD ANSWERS
2. They will be put back in their regular cells after the event (or if you choose to release them from solitary before the event starts).
We'll have the NPC response soon!
Re: MOD ANSWERS
Lighting in the solitary cells? Just because Eps will react very differently depending what it’s like.

Only three individuals in the history of Thorne have read from that book, which supposedly has all of your names and the crimes of which you are accused. Ambrose is the third. The High Mage before him lived a long life; she served Thorne for thousands of years and kept the tome locked away the entire time, and for good reason. The High Mage before her - the one who wrote it - was stripped of his title and exiled for it. His descendants still live down south on that damned Commune, but if they know anything about the book they've been tight-lipped about it.
I warned my brother that he was a fool to open it up again, but he didn't listen. If it were up to me I'd have left you folks in your own worlds, but our Kingdom is suffering through tough times and cold reason lost out to lofty promises."
To the rest, she simply says: "It's out of my hands now, dear."
question for anastasia
"And what use do summoned servants have to the crown, regardless? You make this sound like an arduous venture - employing costly rituals to tear us from our worlds and forbidden knowledge to judge us... do your King and Queen have such little faith in their own soldiers? Their own mages? What good are even the 'pure' among us when Ambrose alone can bring us to our knees?"

But we can only get so close. Most of us have seen the Singularity at a distance, but if we crossed the Horizon, it would tear us apart. You, on the other hand...ah, I've already said too much."
And that's all she'll say on the subject, though she does not seem to truly regret saying it.

He glances at Himeka warily as he thinks of it. It starts to make sense. Thorne is in need of pawns that can engage with this source of power, and Ambrose would refine those he received to the ones he could control. Yet, what does that mean for the rest of them? How long will Ambrose suffer to keep such loose ends? Or was it to be a suicide mission from the start, fodder for the front lines?
He falls silent, recognizing plausible deniability when he sees it. He'll remember her, if he survives the coming days.
"Naive of you to think they tell us wretches anything," he scoffs bitterly, instead of pushing further. He looks away from her, staring out at the free world that will soon be taken away from him again. "He would see us murdered for the consequences of his own mistakes."

She sighs, "His influence exceeds mine, but I have friends in high places, too. I can't promise anything, but I'll see what I can do about your predicament."

"If you could help us and the others... you would have my gratitude."
The thought that any of the people here might be good, that they might be on their side, or willing to take any sort of risk on their behalf, shakes him. It might just be her apparently loathing for her brother speaking, of course - but anything is better than the nothing he's experienced so far. It's a flicker of hope that he dare not let himself indulge in too far.
It allows him to focus on something else she's mentioned, his expression becoming more somber. This may be even more complicated than he thought.
"...But he's correct, then... that the fate of our world relies on this one?" His gaze flickers to the chains around his wrists, to the ground at his feet. "I had thought our world imperiled enough, facing its own doomsday with us made absent... is there truly no way for us to be returned, if we are not wanted here?"

Mal + Alina consequences
In the OOC wrap-up post, we already signed Mal up to go to jail and Alina to stay in jail. Any other fun fates waiting for Mal and Alina as they make their way back or when they return to Thorne? We'd also be open to more after the Kirigan and Kylo thread gets played out.

During their time in solitary, mage apprentice Jolene stops by and unassumingly drops a handkerchief with some bread, jam, and Thornean caramel candies through the bars into both of their cells. She will briskly walk away before answering any questions, but whispers something along the lines of 'they had it comin', dear' on her way out.
