EVENT #1

EVENT #1
Welcome to our very first event! This event will be divided into two parts: one for honored guests, and one for prisoners. There are some opportunities for characters to go to the opposite group's event, so read on below and make sure to check out the accompanying OOC plotting post for extra details!

This event takes place ICly from June 14th to June 19th.

The Summer Festival (Honored Guests)

It's June, and that means the annual Summer Festival in Castle Thorne. The newcomers are causing quite a buzz and, for the first time in ten years, a representative from the increasingly independent city of Nott has agreed to attend. The representative, Lyle Vela, has a lot of political sway in Nott and the impression he takes back with him will affect whether Nott begins to repair relations with the rest of Thorne or moves even further towards independence.

But that's not all there is to do here! The residents of the city surrounding Castle Thorne are intensely curious about the newcomers and several of the events at the Summer Festival have been designed by the mages to show them off. At some point you may begin to feel more like a prized pony than an honored guest, but there are rewards and gifts and good food to be had for all, so what's the harm in showing off a little?

The festival runs all week (June 14th-19th) and the list of events are as follows:
Sparring Contest: Honored guests will be asked to spar in front of an audience. Depending on the time of the week the fight takes place in, some guests may have some or most of their powers back, but the audience is here to see a show and just trampling your opponent in seconds won't do much for them. Try to add some spice to it: a good narrative and a close fight are much more enthralling. You may decide the winner of the fight between yourselves or ask the mods to roll for an outcome below. Prisoners who stay behind can sneak into this event but will not have their powers.

Magic Demonstration: Show everyone what you can do and demonstrate a Thornean magic spell in front of an audience. This should be a simple beginner spell such as a smaller elemental magic spell, some minor healing, a small illusion, and so on. Feel free to decide what spell you'd like your character to perform and post to the header below so the mods can roll for your character's success when performing it in front of the audience! Regardless of success, your character can learn the chosen spell by the end of the event. Unfortunately, prisoners cannot access this event.

The Black Market: Castle Thorne is much less secure during open festivals than it is during the rest of the year, so it's no surprise that some shady characters have managed to sneak in. They're trading potions and magical items, and luckily enough for the penniless newcomers, they're interested in things other than money. They may ask for some blood, saliva, or the chance to perform a spell on the hapless newcomer. Prisoners are welcome in the black market. Please post to the header below to see what item your character gets from the event (and what spell they'll be subjected to if you choose that option).

Visit with the Representative: Near the end of the Festival, three honored guests will be chosen to have one-on-one audiences with Lyle Vela in the hopes of impressing him. Ambrose hasn't had the time to get to know each guest individually yet, so he's asked that they choose the three candidates among themselves. If you wish you have your character volunteer for this position, please make a case for their suitability under the header below! If your character is not running for this position, have them vote for another character. Prisoners who stay behind may vote as well.
At the end of the festival on June 19th, there will be a huge feast available with all manner of fancy food and some alcohol if you wish to get a little drunk. Beware, Thornean alcohol is strong! Prisoners who stayed behind to help out with the festival can easily slip in and take some food and drink for themselves.

If your character has been imprisoned but you want them to attend the Festival, an honored guest may lobby for them to stay behind and help set up. It'll be work, but they can sneak off to have a bit of fun and it won't be as difficult as what's in store for the rest of them. If you wish to have your character stay behind, please post to the OOC plotting post. Because we know that claustrophobic tunnel horror isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, there is no limit to the amount of prisoners who can stay behind.

In the Tunnels (Prisoners)

Good news, prisoners! You get some time away from your cells in the beautiful snow-covered mountains of northern Thorne. A volunteer work opportunity has arisen, and you are all volunteers. If you do well enough at your assigned task, perhaps your prisoner status will be re-evaluated. Or perhaps your supervisor will take all the credit for themselves and throw you right back where you came from. Life's unfair sometimes! You'll at least be given a nice set of boots and heavier clothes to keep you warm.

Your task: to harvest as much crystal as you can from the burrow of a Giant Frostwurm. From June to September, the Frostwurm hibernates and is generally non-aggressive. Huge and territorial, Giant Frostwurms are only rarely encountered and are considered endangered by Thornean biologists. All known Frostwurm habitats are marked and harvested once every few years as the crystals that grow on its body are highly valuable for use in medicine and, erm, recreation although the latter is frowned upon by Thornean authorities. Don't worry, you don't have to touch the Frostwurm itself, it sheds every now and then and leaves a healthy supply of crystals in the tunnels of it burrow.

That's not to say it will be an easy task. There's a reason they're using "volunteer" prison labor, after all. The tunnels are deep and labyrinthine, and it's easy enough to get lost down there and wander in circles until you die of thirst or starvation. The crystals themselves also have a certain disorienting effect that turns hallucinogenic after prolonged exposure and, because of the Frostwurm's unique psychic properties, hallucinations can be shared between individuals. Like a contagion, spending time around someone who is hallucinating can cause it to 'catch'. These hallucinations may be pleasant or frightening, but the only cure is to get out of the tunnels and away from the crystals for a while.

Tunnel cave-ins are also a possibility, in which case you best start digging and hope you choose up. Getting too lost can result in an encounter with the Frostwurm, and while it needs to conserve energy and won't give chase, it'll bite or whip at you with its tail if you get too close. Both prisoners and supervisors are instructed not to kill the Frostwurm under any circumstances, even if it means sacrificing someone in their party. They're endangered, after all!

If your character has been welcomed to Thorne but you still wish to go on the Frostwurm excursion, they can volunteer to be a supervisor. There are currently 24 prisoners and they will be divided into groups of 3, so we will accept a maximum of 8 supervisors (potentially less depending on how many prisoners stay behind to help with the festival). Be aware that supervisors will be in danger as well, and they will be punished if they try to help the prisoners escape, but unlike the prisoners they will be paid for their efforts and seen as having initiative by the Thornean authorities. If you wish to be a supervisor, volunteer on our OOC plotting post.

The timeline for this part of the event is as follows:
June 14th: Prisoners will be led from their cells in chains to a Thornean fast-travel portal (a glowing circle of neon light) that will take them about a mile away from the Frostwurm's burrow. It's cold and the air is thin, so they'll be given the rest of the day to rest and acclimate before being sent inside.

June 15th-18th: Down in the tunnels with you! Characters are sent into the tunnels and can experience any of the effects listed above. If your party makes it out after sunset they'll be permitted to sleep in a tent, if they're lost then they will sleep in the tunnels. On the 18th, anyone who comes out alive will not have to go back in and the supply of crystals will be counted.

June 19th: Today would be the day of the Summer Festival, if they were back at Castle Thorne, but their captors aren't completely merciless. The prisoners and supervisors will be marched back to the fast-travel portal, where a small feast has been set up for them. It isn't as glamorous as what's back in Thorne, but it's the best meal the prisoners have been served since they arrived. And, as a bonus, the guards might slip you some alcohol if you did a good job in collecting the crystals.
Please visit the accompanying OOC plotting post to choose your team of three, and a supervisor if your group has one (groups without PC supervisors will be sent off on their own with no NPC supervisor). This event is designed to have some element of risk to it (but no one will die, don't worry!) so while you can plan what happens to your characters out with your group if you like, we also encourage you to post an action or two to our IC Consequences header below and leave it up to chance. Who knows, something awesome might happen.

Questions

Will there be any mod NPCing during this event?
The three visits with Lyle will be NPCed but other than that, no. Feel free to play random townies, guards, or black market sellers on your own!

Can I try to free the prisoners/can my imprisoned character break out?
Ambrose will be willing to hear cases for prisoner freedom after the event has concluded. You can try to smuggle the prisoners out of town during the festival or escape from the mountain, and prisoners can try to escape, but they will be caught and punished at this stage. Please post to the appropriate header below if you wish to have your character try!

Are the prisoners still powerless?
Yep! Don't worry, inmates, there'll be opportunities to be released for good behavior OR do a prison break soon. More details about the status of the prisoners will be released after this event.

Can my prisoner or supervisor character break away from their assigned group?
Yes, the tunnels are disorienting so individuals may wander off, especially if they are hallucinating. Feel free to interact with anyone and everyone.

What can the hallucinations entail?
Anything! They can think they're being chased, imagine a portal to a green oasis or even scenery from their own homeworld, and anything else you can come up with. They won't be real or tangible so nothing will remain of them once the affected characters are recovered (unless a special mod consequence is given...) but as stated above they can be shared between characters so everyone can see the same thing.

Can my character attend both the Summer Festival and the mission in the tunnels?
Alas, no. Both events will take the whole week, so it's one or the other!

Sparring contest!

[Gideon has been enjoying herself immensely. The fighting, the festivities, the food-- it's as though a good portion of her girlhood fantasies have all come true at once. Finally released from the cold, grasping shadow of Drearburh, let loose amongst people who know how to live rather than wasting away into rheumatic senility, she really couldn't be happier. Yes there is the weighty question of just what their kindly benefactors are going with those people thrust down into the dungeons... but surely all of that can wait until after the party. It's a real party too, with music and alcohol, alcohol that tastes a fair amount better than the acidic sacrament wine she'd once pilfered and utterly sickened herself with. In fact, its left her feeling pleasantly buzzed.

She is, actually, in the midst of refilling both her cup and her plate - the amount of food on display here is frankly staggering, and she can't name any of it which makes for something of an adventure - when the man sidles up beside her. She turns, just a little surprised, when he addresses her so brightly, and the deluge of compliments that follow make her feel almost as giddy as the ale had done. For someone who has spent most of her life sore and furious with loneliness, either ignored or regarded like something that could only be killed with a stake through the heart, being abruptly littered with compliments out of the blue is something of a shock.]

Huh?

[She says, the very picture of eloquence. Give her a moment, good sir. She looks at him, and at the instrument at his back, the suggestion of lines. Then abruptly she's grinning big and bold as brass]

I was good, wasn't I? You don't know what a kick it was to finally get to spar with someone who isn't a classically trained cavalier or some stuffy old Ninth House reject.

[She feels a short, sharp twinge of regret at having referred to Aiglamene that way, but it's quickly forgotten. Instead her aureate gaze slides to the instrument once again, and she motions to it with a quick jerk of her chin.]

What have you got, there? A few lines...about me?

[Far from shy, she sounds eager and interested.]

[Despite her initial reaction, he grins. Ah, well! It's nothing to dissuade Jaskier from furthering his gallant approbation; not everyone is, of course, graced with the manners to accept them so politely. And clearly this sort of woman is not... probably not a mere courtier.]

One can imagine! [Er, literally. He absolutely does not spar.] Your joy shines as radiant as the sun. Even a mere observer couldn't miss it.

[And perhaps that really says what caught his attention. Many were concentrating during the magic demonstrations and the sparring alike. Stuffy, serious magic-and-sword-types. All talented (especially compared to his, ah, display) but a little... stale.

Stale does not serve as adequate distraction.

He nods.]
One cannot help but write when struck by such a formidable muse.

[He pulls the lute to his chest, plucking a few sweet, soft notes as he recites the words. He has no qualms about playing while people are attempting to move around him to pick at food.]

Words leave me weak, with empty cause
Yet so I grasp them. An infinite pause in this Sphere
as Gold of the sun, kissed on the edge of a sword.
How envy burns for skin split in two.

[He wrinkles his nose a little; it's clear he's not entirely satisfied with them yet.] My apologies. It's only a start.

[She blinks, and again there's a touch of surprise in her expression. Surprise that he'd seen it in her, the fast-ascending animal joy that comes over her in the heat of a fight, like her heart is soaring, like her whole being is doing exactly what it had been created to do. Back on Drearburh there had been nothing for her but the hostile stares of decrepit Ninth House nuns who all seemed to despise her for no reason that she could ever discern. Nothing, but those moments where she'd been permitted to lose herself in the pure physicality of sword training, all building up to the longed-for moment when she'd finally escape and join up with the Cohort and do something with her life besides rot down there in the depths. That, and the titty mags she'd managed to squirrel away, but they provided a far more fleeting pleasure than the knowledge that she's a badass with a sword.

She's still wondering over that - and over being called a formidable muse - when his fingers begin to move over his stringed instrument, which produces a soft and beautiful sound. She's never heard the likes of it before - the Ninth House don't really care much for the arts - and as for the words-- well! What a fucking joy it is to be recognised, and praised for it.

Her expression exponentially brightens.]

No no, it's fucking sweet. No one's ever written a song about me, before.

[But she'd been hoping they would, one day, when she got a name for herself as a heroic warrior on the front lines. She can't wait to rub it in Harrow's face, later.]

Oh. Oh! You like it? [He brightens immediately, a sun rising to greet another sun. Well. Of course she likes it; anyone should be absolutely flattered to get even a few lines out of him.

Gods, it's nice. A brief moment where he does not have to soak in his worry over this entire shit situation. He can simply be a bloody bard.]

What? Never? I can hardly believe it, with your skill, and your -- your brawn. [Look, there's a lot of it. She's more than a handful of inches on him, and women are normally not so... large.]

There's no time better than the present, then. If you have no objections on my witnessing a few more of your glorious battles. Or... demonstrations, or whatever they call them here.

[He takes a deep bow over his lute, a tip of his head.] The master bard Jaskier, at your service, my lady. [He stands back up with a smile. It's been a long time since inspiration has struck him for someone who may actually enjoy his efforts.] You must let me know if you're invited for some sort of... I don't know. Dragon hunt? Perhaps they hold those here.

[It'd be nice. He still wants to see a fucking dragon.]

[At the mention of the word brawn Gideon waggles her eyebrows in a ridiculous display, and strikes a flexed pose with one distinctly brawny arm. She hasn't spent all those hours and days and weeks and years training for nothing after all, and it's nice to have someone notice. Even if the someone in question isn't a hot and swooning girl with magnificently heaving breasts. Maybe there'll be time for that, later.]

Gideon Nav, cavalier of the Ninth House, and-- hold up.

[She'd been about to say she's more than happy for her glorious battles to be observed, perhaps ask what being a master bard precisely entails... but the latter part of his statement causes a record-scratch moment in her brain that has to be attended to.]

Dragon hunt? Like, a real dragon hunt? You really think they have those here? I thought they were just a myth.

[She doesn't know an awful lot about wildlife, considering the inhospitable pit of the Ninth has none to speak of, but dragons she's heard of. In comics, if nowhere else. And if they are real? By the Emperor, she's going to fight one.]

[personal profile] cointosser 2021-06-26 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
[If Jaskier has ever swooned in company, he certain is now. No offense to the women of the Continent, but they hardly ever come in this shape, or especially this size.

Oh, yes. She's utterly gorgeous. And could break him in half, which --

Only makes it better.

He straightens up with bright eyes.]
A cavalier, you say? A bloody fucking knight? [Oooooh, that is going to make for some lovely materials. A formidable force, a storm; he would pay all of his current coins for a chance to see her on a horse. Perhaps a lance in hand? No, sword certainly fit more. One of those big ones. The broad ones.

He was never wrong. When inspiration hit him, it was for good reason. Already he felt stories would practically ooze out of her, and certainly she had the personality who may share the most satisfying of gritty details.]

Oh, yes! A real dragon hunt. [He puffs up as if he was the very one hunting it. (He definitely wasn't.)] I am saddened to say I'm not sure of this sphere, but certainly on my own. Only days prior to my -- appearing here, I was on a dragon hunt myself.

[Of course, a day before that Jaskier also thought they were a myth, but he is loathe to admit it now.] It'd be hard to tell, what with their ability to blend in among us.

[Borch certainly fooled him all the way up that fucking mountain.]

[A bloody fucking knight he says, and that makes the job that had been somewhat unwillingly thrust upon her and which had only begun to take on a matter of great importance in her mind toward the end of her doomed stay at Canaan House sound immeasurably fancy, all of a sudden. She likes the sound of it, and also likes being the centre of this bard's attention. It makes her stand a little straighter, body poised to best show off her innumerable muscles. For the moment at least, her high-piled plate and her newly refilled ale are quite forgotten.]

Yeah, a bloody fucking knight. You should have seen the last battle I was in, biggest damned bone construct you ever did see, and a rogue Lyctor to boot. That shit was wild.

[Which it was, particularly considering how it had ended. But she's soon waving the boast away in favour of interest in his tale, and her eyes get big and full at the very idea that dragons could be walking among them as they speak.]

They can blend in? I thought they were...you know, giant scaly things that breathe fire and steal maidens?

[The lavish detail in which the stolen maidens of her magazines had been drawn is something she particularly remembers.]

[personal profile] cointosser 2021-07-01 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
[Jaskier had no idea what the things she was saying were, but he was definitely feeling a little overdressed and warm in his doublet, all of a sudden. Ohh, nothing could get his blood pumping better than a terrible, bloody battle (that he was not involved in at all!)

And not to mention that Gideon herself was, of course, a vision. A treasure, even, he'd say, with how rare it was that women would fight like that. It was why Calanthe had been -- well, the Lionness. How one could be confident her kingdom would never fall.]

I can only imagine. And how I wish I didn't have to.

[There may be a chance yet. To witness a grand battle. And yet... to be stuck right in the fucking middle of it, too.

Dragons are a much more fun topic.]

The last dragon I met [He's only met one, and prior to that meeting truly had believed they were a myth, but still...] looked as human as you or I. A lovely little old man, but one you'd never look twice at. I suspect the point was to look unremarkable in every way. [He grins. She sounds... exactly like he had, at the bottom of that mountain.] They are also that. And fire? Yes. [As far as Geralt told him, at least. And the dwarves. And anyone he could squeeze the story out of.] Kidnapping's more of a wyvern past-time. Or a cockatrice? I'm fairly sure they'd eat anyone. Are dragons a passion of yours, then? Or monsters in general?

[She's silently hoping for much the same; they've been brought here for a reason after all, and what other reason could there be for someone like her to end up on the VIP list than if a war needs to be fought? This could be it, finally, at last, her moment to fulfill the dreams she'd thought had died at Canaan House--

--but for the moment she puts all of that aside. Turns to regard him more fully, expression quite rapt... until he starts saying words at her that she quite frankly doesn't understand. She twists her expression up into something that distinctly says what the fuck? Still, for good measure, she decides to say something along those lines anyway.]

A cockawhatnow? Are you having me on with all this?

[Although rather than anything approaching anger in her tone, there amidst the mild suspicion is the distinct indication that she hopes he isn't. It's maybe one of the most interesting discussions she's ever had.]

And if dragons can swan about looking like humans, that means anyone could be a dragon, doesn't it?

[It certainly makes the congregation they've been thrust amongst seem abruptly more interesting.]

I wouldn't say they're a passion, I mean, I didn't think they were real until maybe about two minutes ago. But imagine getting to fight one of those! Best. Day. Ever. The only monsters I've ever really fought have been made out of bones. Bones are what I know, but if there are other kinds then I wanna know aaaall about them. Maybe you could tell me. You know, while I wait for you to finish writing my theme song.

[Ohhh, lords. He's delighted. Being able to show off his monster knowledge (that he completely gleaned from bugging the shit out of Geralt and tagging behind him, and perhaps from bugging the shit out of other people) may as well be one of his favorite hobbies.]

No, my dear lady! I mean, I do have an expansive imagination, but I'm a crafter of poetry, not language.

[If only he could draw a picture. It would certainly pass along the idea better.]

It's like a... dragon. [He pauses.] Chicken. A dragon chicken.

[Yep, that's him showing off. ANYWAY, dragons are way more interesting. Cockatrice sort of just scream and kill anyone who exists too close to them.] As for dragons, I completely understand! Er, not fighting one, exactly, but what I wouldn't give to simply watch the battle! [Especially her. Sword gleaming in the sun, catching on the perfect droplet of sweat on her formidable brow... ah. The things ballads are made of! And, as a treat, he can already imagine, with her expressive face, the sort of smarmy, shit-eating grin a hero would have.

He's running away with this image. For sure.

He lights up. Oh, yes. She's definitely getting a theme song, as she puts it.]
Oh, I promise you'll get your ballad. Give me a week! Perhaps less, even. Of course a continued demonstration of your strength would be delightful, but I suppose it's no easy feat to find... bones. Bones? For you to fight?

[Wait, bones? It's not the worst. Bones are easy to rhyme with. Bones can be very well-used in metaphor. Bones are a bit difficult to, ah, make an epic topic of. Well. He could title it Boner for Bones.

Mmm. That might not fly.]
Are bones particularly dangerous where you come from? Is that -- is that a thing?
