open; horizon; obstacle course
When she feels this way, there is only one thing she knows how to do to help herself forget: she must train. Antiope would advise her so, and she will not let her late mentor down. And here, in the Horizon, it is easy to come up with ways to work herself to exhaustion so she can no longer feel the emptiness of this shadow Themyscira.
She is dressed for the course, takes her starting position. There is no space for the miles of swimming and horse-trails like home, but the pillars and hoops are easy enough to recreate. The course stands ready, and she forces herself to let her mind go blank of everything but the beat of her heart and the sound of her own breathing. There are no roaring crowds, not even a replica of the amphitheater around her, but she can still feel them in her soul, her sisters' eyes on her.
She runs, leaps, grabs on to one of the ropes and begins to climb, using only the strength of her arms. It should be easy, but here in the Horizon, she can do anything she wants--make anything as easy or as difficult as she wants, and so she pushes herself, imagines what it felt like when she was a child and had not yet come into her power. Imagines her body is as strong as any other Amazon's, and hopes that her resolve will be, too. She makes it to the top, breathing hard, and slips through the first barrier, then bounds from one pillar to the next--and is smacked by the weighted log blocking her path. She falls fifty feet down into the water below, drags herself out, sand sticking to her soaked sandals--and begins again.
