EVENT #8: MÆRE - IC POST (FACTION INTERVENTION)

Event #8 - Mære (Intervention)

While it is each Summoned who is the focus of their Entity's ire, they are not the only ones who seem aware of its movements. The factions will soon approach each Summoned with an offer: work with them to help contain the threat and aid the suffering of you and your friends.

Please post your top level under your character's faction heading comment. Players are completely free to organize among themselves how they wish to play these threads out. You may make a traditional top level, join or create a free-for-all thread where anyone can tag in at any time, or whatever you like. Just be sure to communicate with everyone you'll be threading with!

For any questions, please ask on our question thread.

THORNE | FREE CITIES | SOLVUNN
Kingdom of Thorne
In CASTLE THORNE, Ambrose's most promising assistant mage Jolene has been having frightful dreams of late. Though she writes it off at first as regular nightmares, when she catches glimpse of a hulking shadow walking in the Castle's halls that looks exactly like one of the horrors she's witnessed, she instantly knows that something else is at play. She immediately meets with Ambrose who opens up one of the castle's most secluded experimentation rooms, located deep underground.

The Summoned of Thorne will be asked by Jolene to assist with an urgent matter that cannot just be left to the Thornean mages. If they agree, they will be led by Jolene and her assistant mages down to the underground corridor. Guards are posted outside of the rooms for security, but the Summoned and the mages will otherwise have free reign over the rooms. Inside they will find an array of tomes, scrolls, elixirs, and alchemy sets. Though not everyone will know how to use these, they will be told that the castle may be under siege from beings unknown and that the Summoned are their only hope in coming up with a new method to expel them from this realm.
Preparation
The Summoned will skim the scrolls and tomes, consult with the assistant mages on the equipment, and use their own inherent abilities through their connection with the Singularity to inscribe and create a new spell to bind and banish the Entities from Abraxas. Some of the tomes may be a codex that requires solving a puzzle to open while there may be boxes locked by enchantments that might contain special items to aid them in their research. For the less magically inclined who wish to help, items such as scrolls, potion ingredients, and notes will also need to be gathered and organized. It will take some time and once they have what they believe is a workable incantation, they will have to test it.

While you're free to have your character succeed or fail at interpreting certain codex or refining certain spells, within reason, if you'd like to have a mod roll for you, leave a comment here with what you're seeking to accomplish and we will determine both your rate of success and any consequences!
Performing the Spell
To begin the spell, all those involved will be led to a final room at the end of the corridor that is laced with silver inscriptions along the doorway, pulsating with ambient magic. A soft whisper from Jolene will grant them access inside. There, a shallow pool of water no more than a foot deep sits in a circle in the center of the room. The Summoned will be instructed to stand in a circle inside the pool and join hands at the edges. The door will close behind them and the experiment will begin.

The mages will rub an elixir on their hands and begin the incantation. At first, the room is still and silent except for the chanting of the spell. Then candles will flicker out and the water beneath their feet will glow, gurgling and bubbling as though boiling - except the temperature remains surprisingly cool. The Entity of each of the gathered Summoned will take shape in the water, towering above the circle in liquid form. Any Summoned with a connection to it may feel dizzy when it manifests as if the image is being pulled directly out of their subconscious. These liquid forms will lash out at everyone in the circle, but as long as they don't break the line of joined hands, it remains contained.

If someone breaks the circle, the water will begin to hiss and freeze, turning icy cold. Quickly rejoin the circle before the water solidifies the Entity into a living icy statue, or risk being consumed with it.

Eventually, the Entity will explode in a burst of water, soaking those in the circle. Then the incantation begins again to bring another Entity forth. Rinse and repeat.

When each Entity is accounted for, the experiment will end. The doors are opened and the Summoned are bid to return to their chambers for some well-deserved rest. But rest will not find them. For the next 3 days, they will feel exhausted and irritable, but unable to sleep.
The Free Cities
In the FREE CITIES, all is not well in the capitol. Aleksander reports seeing the reflections of several strange beings in his lab equipment. After his prized pigeon Nicola let out a terrified squawk, he turned to Cadens leadership to report the incidents. Try as he might to track down its source, all he was able to discern was a vague resonance not unlike that tracked when close to the Singularity which turns attentions immediately towards the Summoned.
Preparation
With Marlo's blessing, Aleksander travels with a group of Summoned volunteers, his own laboratory assistants, and a small brigade of the Cadens Military to escort them all to an outpost in the eastern deserts. Flanked by soldiers, the Summoned will be instructed they are to retrieve crystals located in the mines below the outpost. The soldiers are only there to make sure nothing untoward happens to these outstanding volunteers, of course.

Those who are familiar with the different types of crystals from the science academies will recognize these are not quite the same as those carefully mined and cultivated in Cadens for hefty experiments. Instead, these are duller, and more brittle. Gathering them will take effort, and the mines are slippery and dangerous in some parts. Watch your step or risk the ground crumbling beneath you.

While you're free to have your character succeed or fail at gathering crystals at your discretion, if you'd like to have a mod roll for you for whether they will slip and fall, if any of the crystals will break, or even conflict involving another character, etc., leave a comment here with what you're seeking to accomplish and we will determine both your rate of success and any consequences!
Performing the Experiment
The Summoned will have a moment to rest as their bounty is cleaned and set up in a claustrophobic laboratory room located underground. The rest will be important as Aleksander explains that it is only their energy and connection to the Singularity that can power these crystals. What are they for, exactly? His only response is "you will see soon enough".

They will be provided these special gloves and the Summoned can take turns laying their hands on a large glass structure reinforced with steel that contains these crystals. Even those without a magical inclination will find that their life energy is enough, causing the crystals within the glass to vibrate with their touch. Hours will be spent in this small room and as time passes on, the reflections that Aleksander had glimpsed in his laboratory begin to show themselves inside the crystals. What's more, while Aleksander could not identify what they were, the collected Summoned in the room will recognize them immediately as their own Entities. Their Entities that now, upon seeing their progenitors, will try to break free.

Aleksander nor his assistants can explain how this is possible, but the Summoned will find that channeling their energy through the gloved devices may cause small bursts inside the crystals as if they themselves have some control over that environment. Phantom bindings or hands created inside the crystals will keep the Entities at bay...if they try hard enough. Should anyone falter, the surface of the crystals will begin to crack. These cracks will grow larger and larger, and characters will either need to gather their strength or find aid in those around them before the Entity bursts free altogether. The gloved devices themselves may also prove to be an issue if they break during the process - and may need to be quickly repaired on the spot, however possible.

The effort will be exhausting, but they will be rewarded in the end as the crystals grow heated, splintering the glass container but retaining the Entities within the crystals themselves, trapped inside. Researchers will hurry into the room to make sure everyone is all right and to move the crystals into a more secure container. The Summoned volunteers will be thanked for their efforts and escorted back to Cadens by the soldiers. Aleskander and his assistants stay behind at the outpost to perform further research and appropriately contain the crystals. The Summoned will experience grogginess, headaches, and some weakness in the 3 days that follow.
Solvunn Commune
In the SOLVUNN COMMUNE, those on the Council are considered close to the Gods. When Rowan is given an ominous vision of mysterious beings found nowhere known in Abraxas, it falls to reason that the Gods are bidding those they brought to this world to deal with them. He can be seen early in the morning making his way across the town in the Primary Settlement to speak with Winifred and the Council itself is inaccessible for several hours. Later that day, Rowan emerges once again accompanied by several of the Commune's mages, usually seen leading ceremonies and other religious practices throughout the year.
Preparation
The mages and Rowan will beseech the Summoned of Solvunn, that the time has come for them to perform the acts with which the Gods had brought them hither. With their special connection to the magics of this world, they can help save the Commune and restore natural order to the world by ridding the land of unwelcome phantoms. That the Summoned agree to this is of utmost importance as their devotion and willpower plays a large part in their effectiveness against such threats. The Gods will know their intent, the mages say. And it is the Gods who need their aid.

Those who agree will accompany Rowan and the mages out of the Primary Settlement into the hills around Solvunn into a small wooded area. There, they will come upon an old unsettling ritual site. Before they have time to question the statues, they will be told to seek out specific herbs and plants in the surrounding brush as well as any animal bones they can find. The woods this far out are a little more dangerous. Watch out for some smaller but still dangerous beasts, and be careful of hornets nests and mildly toxic blooms that lurk among the herbs you are meant to gather.

While you're free to have your character disturb hornets or take a tumble at your discretion, if you'd like to have a mod roll for you for whether they will accidentally brush against flowers that leave behind a rash, upset the wildlife, or so forth, leave a comment here with what you're seeking to accomplish and we will determine both your rate of success and any consequences!
Performing the Ritual
Once they have returned to the ritual site, they will be instructed to weave together baskets with their fellow Summoned by intertwining the bones and plants, after the bones have been carved and blessed by the mages. As they work, the mages will close off the area in a line of salt and painted runes. The hour grows dark and the statues themselves begin to take on the appearances of the Entities, raising an alarm among Summoned and mages alike. They bid the Summon to complete the baskets as quickly as possible. Once they are completed, the mages will take the herbs and mix them with curious liquids inside the bowls, magically watertight no matter how well they were woven. The mages then bid the Summoned to repeat a stated prayer of protection to the Gods and drink concoction, which will imbue them with the ability to face the phantoms of their own realm.

Each Summoned will take a drink and find that the statues before them seem to move. The mages hand the Summoned chalk and ask them to write the name of their adversaries on their stone flesh so that the Gods can identify them and send them away. One by one, each possessed statue must be identified and marked as the mages chant, and one by one, they seem to turn to ash. The possessed statues do not wait idly to be caught, some will fight back and need to be tricked or captured so they can be marked. Yet in the end, all will be gone by sunrise.

Those who fail to drink the liquid adequately will find their limbs growing stiff and faltering, as if they, too, are beginning to form into a statue...and that their Entity occupying a statue grows more limber in return, like it means to exchange places. Consuming more of the liquid will cure the afflicted Summoned of these ails.

In the morning the statues that were once possessed have returned to their normal state, but they have moved across the site and are caked in ash. The Summoned will find that they are starving and that their hunger will not abate. The mages will supply them with potions to help deal with the hunger and Rowan will offer cheeses and milk from his farm, though the Summoned will remain ravenous for a 3 days after the ritual.

[The process of spellcrafting is never an easy one, even with all the tools so generously provided to the Summoned of Thorne. Stephen works at a desk, alternating between sitting and studying, and standing and casting what he learns from his studies. He has stacks of books before him, other tomes spread out flat. Scrolls rolled up and scattered here and there, some on the verge of falling off of his desk; an alchemy set bubbles on the adjacent one nearby, hissing now and again when new mixtures are added.

It is work suited for a sorcerer, of course; in a way, it is work suited to Stephen Strange himself, who seeks out a solution to any given problem with full vim and vigor, pushing himself to the point of unraveling what he cannot quite grasp fully until he can, forcibly or otherwise. It means long hours, it means hardly minutes of rest allotted to him. Given the perils of sleep, and some dark thing lurking in the shadows like an ill-portent, "rest" is a liberal use of the word, anyhow.

So yes, hours pass. Exhaustion creeps in, gnawing at his focus. Stephen thumbs at a tome that needs unlocking, sensing the magic imbued in it, and flicks a wrist to crack open its spine and unfurl its pages -- only to find himself staring down at a complex, esoteric codex of magic that will need further puzzling out before he can wring anything useful from it.

He groans. Sits back down in his chair, slumping against it.]

How's your... magical mumbo-jumbo deciphering skills?

[He gestures at the book to someone nearby. If he's using terms like "mumbo-jumbo" then you know he's worn out.]

[It's work suited for a sorcerer, yes, but not a teenager who until a few weeks ago assumed magic to be strictly the territory of fiction. Of course, from Wilhelm's perspective it's not the work isn't suited for him — he isn't suited for the work. The subtle difference is self-deprecation.

But when the mages presented a potential solution to the nightmares haunting every corner of the castle, a pathway back to sanity, he volunteered anyway. He makes himself useful by gathering tomes and scrolls pertaining to the topics his more knowledgeable teammates request, clearing away the texts that turn out to be dead-ends, and circulating pages of notes around the room. More than once he makes the trek up to the dining hall for coffee.

It's not especially glamorous or heroic, but it's better than waiting. Keeping his body and mind busy also keeps his thoughts from sinking too deep. Every waking minute now, he feels as if he's on the precipice of the next nightmare. As if, if he so much as closes his eyes for a second, that thing, that shadowy figure, will find him again.

Wilhelm is busy sorting through a stack of books — of the leather-bound kind that look intimidatingly important — when Stephen addresses him. Except, he doesn't realize that he's necessarily the one for whom the question is intended. It's only after an awkward length of silence that he glances up to discover that there is, in fact, nobody else in this corner of the chamber at the moment.]

Oh, uh... [He clears his throat.] Not good. I mean, I guess I've never tried, so I don't know.

[ Burning the candle at both ends, that's what they call it. This is not a ritual that is by any means foreign to the Scions, and so when the nightmares start like an illness spread among the Summoned and when the mages of Thorne ask for help in getting to the bottom of this, sleep is deprioritized.

Thancred has some experience in staying up for long hours, and so while he can't offer much when it comes to crafting the spell, he can provide company to others who are up into the dead of night, hard at work. Again, this is nothing he hasn't done before, having stayed up with both Y'shtola and Urianger when they had some immense stack of tomes to sort through. Both of them could easily be considered even worse at sleeping well than he is, which says plenty.

Speaking of Y'shtola, she would be the one to ask such a question. Thancred glances over at Stephen's desk as he falls into his seat, then steps over to set down a fresh cup of black tea for him. ]

I think you know the answer to that. I believe Y'shtola is fast asleep, or I would ask her. [ Which is a rarity, but even she has her limits. Thancred lets out a sigh, glancing down at the massive text that Stephen's pinpointed as important for their current predicament. With a small shrug, he reaches out to slide it closer. ] ... I suppose I could give it a try. [ He's familiar with many different magical concepts, and at one point in his life could use basic spells. It's possible he'll be able to offer a fresh perspective to some tired eyes. ]

[Kell is not a team player. He's never been one. Most of the time, because people couldn't keep up with him. Few - let's face it, two - that did, he never really liked. Here though, he has to admit he's not going to pull this whole thing alone. And Stephen is the most competent person in the room. In his not entirely unbiased opinion.]

Given my own magic uses a dead language mumbo-jumbo, I'll bite.

[Jon is, he thinks, out of his element. He’s been at this for hours. A glance at the book — even a close glance — doesn’t reveal anything that seems meaningful to him.]

Where I come from, you handle a siege with walls, arrows, flame. Hot pitch and swords. Not words.

[You know nothing, he reminds himself. This isn’t that kind of fight, no matter how you’d like to put Longclaw through that creature. He half-shrugs, and adds,]

But where I come from, creatures don’t attack your dreams. We have that much, and even then — well, sometimes there is need of a book. This one’s not in a language I recognize, the common tongue or High Valyrian, but that means little.

As it turns out, banishing evil and saving the day is a lot more boring than he anticipated. When Wilhelm volunteered — less with the righteousness of someone who strives to do the right thing, and more with the desperation of someone whose sanity hangs by a thread — he worried that he wouldn't be able to contribute anything. But within an hour, he realizes that half the work comprises the mundane and menial. Like scouring bookshelves for volumes on a certain subject, sorting scrolls, delivering notes, fetching little vials of ingredients. Running for coffee, tea, snacks when teammates edge into crabbiness or sag into exhaustion.

Really, it's just a group project, the stakes of which are much higher than any homework assignment. And while he wouldn't describe it as thrilling or even fun, it's better than doing nothing. Better than waiting for night to fall like a guillotine.

As he hands a requested item to a teammate — a stack of notes from another room, a particular tome or vial, a mug of fresh coffee — he can't help but ask:

"So, do you think we're close to figuring this thing out?"

"Absolutely no idea."

Mat's honestly feeling a bit useless at this point. Magic is not his area of expertise, he knows less than even an apprentice mage here at the castle. And what he knows...doesn't exactly help with Thornean magic.

"But my eyes are about to begin bleeding. Between exhaustion and reading the same damned paragraph three times in a row..." He sighs and rubs his face and sits back.

"I hope better minds than mine are having better luck."

Rhy takes the book with an exaggerated shrug, letting it fall with a thump and an accompanying puff of dust on the table. He wrinkles his nose at it, and the whole pile of old and equally dusty tomes he's collected, looking for some symbols Kell had drawn on a piece of parchment pinned under a bottle of wine nearby.

"Why ask me? I'm just here to look pretty -- for moral support, you see."

He quips, but he does seem to be working. Or trying to. Rhy stifles a sigh, leaning back in his chair to look up at the young man standing by the table. One of the more recent arrivals, to whom Rhy has introduced himself in passing during Kylo's usual 'gather the newcomers and teach them about the Horizon' get-together.

"Wilhelm, was it? Sit. If you haven't anything else to do. I could use a break."

peter parker . strength . ota

[personal profile] piqure 2022-06-26 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
PREPARATION

[ there came a time, after a bit too many sleepless nights, waking up with bruises across his ribs or coughing from dust he’d dreamed about, that peter parker knew it wasn’t a question of participation.

the free cities said that the summoned could help figure this out. they said that they need the summoned and peter doesn’t think twice anymore because if he can lend anything to make this stop — to make this stop for everyone else who must be as exhausted or more than he is (for everyone on the list of people he cares about here) — then he’d do what he can.

maybe it harkens a little back to when nick fury came knocking, but the anxieties are easy enough to shove back down and in no time does he find himself descending into the mines below the outpost, in search of crystals. he concludes they’re material resources necessary for whatever spell or experiment they have planned.

he tries to ignore the creeping tension between his shoulders as he eyes the soldiers around them. for their own protection, they’re told.

ignore it, ignore it.

he gets to gathering the crystals careful to handle them after the first few snap in his grip.

he’s standing in front of a sheer wall, eyeing a nook above that shows a considerable amount of crystals peeking through. he looks to be considering the climb - it won’t be too hard, and catches another volunteer in his periphery.
] There’s a lot up there!

EXPERIMENT

[ okay so — this is cooler than peter wants to admit, even if the gloves look a little too steampunk, a little too industrial and mechanical but peter watches the experiment be set up with a rapt sort of attention.

when its his turn to slip the contraption on, he tries not to flinch at the face of the Entities that reflect back at them. his senses flare, proverbial alarm bells that have the hairs on his arms standing on end, that has hyperawareness crawling across his skin and settling in his sub conscience and he grits his teeth and sets his shoulders and pushes all his energy back into the contraption.

by the end of his turn, he’s exhausted and groggy and covered in sweat and he’s biting away a headache. and yet kid seems to rally by sheer stubbornness alone, straightens up and turns to the nearest summoned with a lopsided and hopeful smile —
] — hey, it looks like it’s working, right?

[ In the end, Claude decides to assist. Not without misgivings, though; there's too much he wants to know about what they're about to do that it seems they just aren't going to be told, and that doesn't work so well for him. But a chance to make the nightmares stop for everyone? That's far, far too hard to resist, and he's always been one to take up a cause for the greater good.

Descending into the mines brings back those second thoughts and so does being accompanied by soldiers in what's ostensibly for their safety and nothing else. Claude finds himself eying them every so often like most of the other Summoned are as he goes about the crystal collection task at hand, and he can't help but wonder if they're all equally skeptical about why the military's involved with this.

He's contemplating the same ledge that (unbeknownst to him) someone else is and wondering how difficult it'd be to climb up it, and whether it's worth risking the crumbling ground. Then a voice pipes up and startles Claude out of his half-formed plans (which is for the best, really) and he looks over to see someone he hasn't met yet confirming that thought about it being a great collection point. Claude puts on an automatic smile - it's difficult not to in the face of enthusiasm. ]

If we could get up there somehow, we'd just need a good way to get them down since they're so fragile. [ From experience - he's fractured too many even while handling them with what he thought was great care. He does have a solution for that in mind as he tugs on the scarf knotted around his waist like a makeshift sash and stretches the fabric out, holding one end up higher as a simulation of sorts for the other's thoughts on it. ] Maybe we could use this like a chute to collect them if someone holds the other end, or if we tie it to something?

Sorry for the delay!

experiment

[personal profile] assembles 2022-06-30 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
[ It's been one hell of a week.

Between the nightmares, the hours of sleep passed on to try and avoid said nightmares, and the masked figure that's started haunting him even while awake, Steve had been worn out coming into this. Not that most would have known just from looking at him. He's put his all into gathering as many crystals as he could, even spotting for Peter earlier in the day as he climbed up to collect some from a higher outcropping in the caves.

Besides, he has the serum, which means he has to be feeling a whole lot better than a lot of the other people here. It's what keeps him going, even as they're led into the underground lab for the ritual and instructed to siphon their energy into the crystals to seal those shadowy figures inside.

He takes his turn, forced to watch as some horrible facsimile of Bucky, the emotionless shell that Hydra wanted him to be, stares back at him from within the prisms of the crystal. A small crack forms, but Steve rallies, reminding himself that this thing he's seeing isn't really his friend. (And never was.)

The crack resolves and he's ordered to pull back after spending more time with the glove on than most. He nods and yanks the glove off, then backs away from the central mechanism. There stands Peter, looking just as run down. ]

So far so good.

[ For as wary as he'd been about cooperating with the Cities' military, this has gone smoothly so far. Almost too smoothly.

Steve eyes Peter's dirt-smudged face, his tired yet hopeful smile. His own shoulders lift up from their sag as he attempts to look less exhausted than he feels. It's not a sensation he's used to anymore, not like this. So drained. When he'd been Peter's age, though, he'd felt like this all the time. ]
You all right? [ This has been a lot, and while Peter might be used to it by now, it's still worth it to check in. ]

[ Jesper isn't entirely certain what he thinks about the Free Cities and their solution, he is a naturally paranoid person, thanks to Kaz Brekker, but if it works, at this point he doesn't care. This has messed him up and worse than that, it has hurt and haunted the people he loves here. For Jesper, that's far worse than anything that could be done to him, so it's for them that he is here. He doesn't trust the soldiers as far as he can throw them, but it is necessity right now.

He knows Peter from Mag's inn and Jesper's close to Sam Wilson, so he feels comfortable approaching the other teen as they collect crystals. Jesper has already brought quite a few over to the soldiers, if it was a competition he'd likely be winning in his opinion, but that is neither here nor there. He looks up to where Peter is referring to and thoughtfully rubs a hand across his chin. ]

How good are you at catching?

[ Jesper glances toward the soldiers, hesitant to be too obvious with them around, but he's been able to collect as many as he did because he has a leg up. He can feel the crystals and use his telekinesis to pull them out. ]

Say, if a few started to drop from there unexpectedly, could you catch them?

Jesper Fahey | The Wheel of Fortune | OTA

[personal profile] itookashot 2022-06-29 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
PREPARATION

Jesper is feeling particularly on edge once he makes the only decision he feels that he has at this point. The nightmares have to stop, it nearly got him to make a bad choice, one he couldn't take back. But he's paranoid at the moment, as uncertain if this is the Singularity than if it's the Free Cities themselves that did it. Anything is on the table. He is exhausted and tense and angry. He distrustfully stares at the soldiers and there's a warning in the way he tilts his chin up, almost in a 'go ahead, try it' way.

"I notice none of you are helping out right now," he snarks at them, before focusing on finding the crystals. Jesper is really past time of caring who sees him using his abilities, even these bastards, so he has an easier time than most getting them. He can feel where they are by their brittle nature and can call to them, his telekinesis zipping them to his waiting hand or coming out where someone can pluck them out.

"There's one right there, right side." He tells someone nearby, although the crystal doesn't seem obvious right away. "Sooner we get all these, the sooner this is over."

EXPERIMENT

"Of course it's us," Jesper says, taking the glove. He is definitely done with patience so he walks right over to the glass structure without hesitation and puts his hand on it. He gasps as it feels like it's draining him, but at the same time, it pulses, the crystals vibrating on the other end. Jesper ignores that it is wearing on him and instead gets fascinated by the glow, tempted for a moment to see what he could feel with his own hand. But he isn't that reckless.

Jesper is taking a break, letting someone else feed it for a moment since he's wearing out, when something changes in the crystals. He sees his shadow self, the sick parem-infested version of him that's been messing with his head for days, and he moves forward, pissed. "Oi, you prick. Don't even try to get out." Jesper immediately gets a glove back on, determined more than ever before now that he's seen it. If anyone else gets weary or needs to take a break, Jesper's there, ready to take a new turn, not caring as it draws more from him each time.

At the end, when it's over, though, Jesper wavers. He looks just about ready to pass out entirely, and for a 6'3 long-limbed kind of kid, collapsing is like a tree coming down. When a soldier comes near, seemingly to help him, he waves at them. "Touch me and I'll put a bullet in your head." It doesn't matter his guns aren't with him. Although he definitely looks like he's not going to stay conscious much longer.

"I'm starting to wonder if maybe this wasn't the greatest choice..."

But there isn't much conviction in Nadine's tone. This has to stop. She takes a seat next to Jesper, taking a break as well. She hadn't had much energy going into this. Between the nightmares and a number of Summoned needing medical attention in the night, she's exhausted.

But this can't go on. And if she has to do some state-sanctioned magic crap, fine. If there's some secret price to be paid later, it's probably worth it. Probably.

"I don't know how much more I have in me."

harrowhark nonagesimus | the magician | open

[personal profile] necrosaint 2022-06-30 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
PREPARATION

The fact that Harrowhark Nonagesimus, despite her recent technical conscription into a Cohort-adjacent position toward the end of her time in her own world, absolutely hates military endeavors can likely be guessed by the way she carries herself in this escort situation: tense, shoulders pinned back, head held up high enough to give out an air of haughtiness. An air of haughtiness that is genuine but also masking a deep fear, which anyone particularly good at reading people could pick up.

It may also be clear that she's profoundly interested in looking more respectable and capable than how she normally appears (a late teens-early adult woman of slight size, always dressed in black with some small amount of bone decoration, face perpetually painted with a skull) because she has opted for her most profoundly Leadership of the Ninth outfit possible: it's mostly her normal outfit, but with the cloak with the tall collar of bones. So perhaps she looks a little more baseline unsettling-scary than normal.

Thankfully, she has seen crystals enough in her attempts to figure out whether she can create New Magic-substitutiary-locomotion skeleton-relic based vehicles that move about at a more efficient speed (yes, if you've seen her lurking in the corner of a lab space or library and attempting not to be noticed, that is probably why) that she's confident she understands what she is supposed to be looking for.

This time, Harrow doesn't have skeletal constructs help her gather anything. Just in case it looks too suspicious. Cadens' authority still frightens her a bit, even if she appears to be trying to act as if she's the sort to flaunt it if she wants to and is only cooperating out of her own convenience. (She is not. She is doing it because she believes she must.) Her attempts to move with grace are a different story—while she is able to pick up crystals with her gloved hands, she occasionally stumbles and the ground makes ominous noises. Perhaps it's only her small and lightweight form that prevents her from causing a worse catastrophe, but she does manage not to fall hard enough to fall through. So far.

She looks to the others occasionally—for her cavalier, for Alucard or Ciri or any of the faces she'd learned in the recent unpleasantry of the not-dreams.

THE EXPERIMENT

It's a bit of a struggle for Harrow to try to put the issued gloves on over her own, and in the end she has to divest herself of her typical hand coverings and put them in a pocket before replacing them with the technological glove marvel which she regards with a calculatingly thoughtful expression before moving on to join the group.

The way the crystals respond to her—to all of them—fascinates the skull-faced young woman enough that her eyes are bright with a confidence and joy that it is unlikely others have ever seen in her; this is fascinating, it's phenomenal. The more this happens, the more Harrow's confidence and comfort grows and she relaxes, defensive arrogance fading away ...

And as the Entities form, she tenses again: her two-hundred-headed, many-limbed, monstrous spirit creature opens its mouth and tries to sing its hollow song to her. Her eyes dart around in a senseless saccade, looking from random pointless spot to random pointless spot around the room—until they fall suddenly on the way other Summoned in the room seem to be able to enact some kind of control. Those little bursts—the way that they can change things inside—

she takes a deep breath, and she focuses hard enough blood begins to trickle from her nose. I am a Lyctor. But is that good enough? I am the greatest necromancer of my generation. But in truth she has learned she is one of three, and does she now need the other two? Or is it enough to be Gideon-and-Harrowhark, Harrowhark-and-Gideon?

It is enough: sheer, brutal concentration alone makes a burst of energy in the crystal form into skeletal hands to push the Entity and its compatriots away from the edges. You are not me. I am not you. I am—you—we—NO. "I am more than the sum of you!" comes out of her mouth in a low, hissed voice.

[ feel free to talk to her after that, or at the end: ]

Eventually, Harrow succeeds as everyone else does: eventually she defeats her two hundred dead children, her melange of souls, just a little bit more. She barely does not break the glove. But she is bleeding from her nose, bleeding from her eyes, and as soon as the work is finished slowly collapses onto the ground, head throbbing. Only if Gideon Nav is not present does she allow anyone else to help her up. As they make their return she will weave as she walks, and her facepaint is marred by blood-sweat on her forehead. She's murmuring incoherently, and breathing hard.

Viktor knows he shouldn't be here--knows that he's not really in any shape to be contributing to something that might have physical side effects, but when Jayce makes his intentions clear, he insists on accompanying him. He's not much for actually collecting the crystals--maneuvering to secure the hard to reach clusters is not really in his wheelhouse, and neither is carrying heavy loads, so he spends the time leading up to the actual procedure checking the equipment, making spot repairs to gloves, and ensuring that everything is ready to go.

The woman in the black and white makeup and the...bone...cloak? Is hard to ignore. Her outfit gets his attention, but it's the tense way she goes about the job that keeps it, her body language indicating that she's more than a little suspicious of all of this. Viktor's not so clueless as to think it's a good idea to badmouth their current activity when so many soldier and researchers are around, but when she slips nearby, it gives him an opening to start a conversation.

"Careful." He's sorting through a bin of collected crystals, looking up with apparent concern at the instability of the cave. "Are you all right?"

Jayce Talis | The Magician | OTA

[personal profile] hextechhead 2022-07-03 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
PREPARATION

Jayce is slightly better off than he would have been if the subject of his nightmares wasn't nearby him at all times, so he could constantly reassure himself of Viktor's heart beating. But the nightmares are still getting to him, and the issues in the Horizon have made him very skittish. Feeling like the child is literally haunting him is a whole new level of guilt. So he didn't hesitate to volunteer, although he was far more anxious about his partner coming along. The quicker they get this done though, the better.

Jayce is very skilled at finding crystals and making his way through the mines, having worked in a forge and spent many years finding magical crystals, so it's almost like his own memories. For a big man he is sturdy on his feet and doesn't slip, but if someone else does, he is quick to put a steady hand on your elbow. He can benchpress most people, so it's not difficult for him to catch others.

He takes a close look at the crystals when he finds them, turning it around in his hand, his eyes speculative and knowing. Jayce knows all about magical crystals. This reminds him of the unstable ones from home, although it doesn't have the pure power and energy that Hextech ran on. You can find him studying them seriously, taking a close look before being willing to turn it over to the guards.

THE EXPERIMENT

Jayce smiles wryly when he picks up the glove, like it's a secret joke, although he glances toward Viktor when he does so and wiggles fingers at him. They both know why; it looks cruder but similar to the glove he made to connect to the Hexclaw. Jayce thinks he's figured out a general idea of what is exactly happening here.

At 6'4 and made of pure muscle, he volunteers right away to get them started, and he will stay on much longer than he probably should. He thinks that every minute he spends letting it drain him, it will protect someone else from having to do the same. He only takes a break when it looks like he is a step away from passing out, and reluctantly. Feel free to try to convince him sooner.

When the Entity appears within the crystals, Jayce's eyes widen, and he really think she has nailed down what is happening. He'll have to go over it with other people later. He focuses and creates bindings within the crystal with laser focus, his jaw tightening and getting a new wave of energy from sheer determination.

"Hold steady, everyone," he will say at some point, when it seems obvious the Entity is trying to escape. Jayce can't help his tendency to take a leading role, not when he thinks they finally may have this damn thing under their thumb. He knows what happens when crystals like this type of power get set off; it blew up his apartment that one time. He has questions for Aleskander but it's obvious he won't get any answers now.

When it's finished and done though, Jayce doesn't have the energy to follow up with questions, at least not right away. He is feeling the most worn out he's ever been in his life, but despite that, he has just enough energy to get out. And to make sure everyone else does too. Despite his own exhaustion, Jayce is likely to check on others and help steady them on their way out.

Viktor's not in any shape to be doing this--he and Jayce have words about it, but ultimately there was no standing by while everyone else performed the experiment, to say nothing of Jayce doing it alone. He insists, and though he's not of much help when it comes to the physical work of gathering crystals, he aids in other ways, sorting them, making sure the gloves are in working order, and sometimes trying to tap in for someone who has clearly been going for too long.

That's Jayce, right now. He knows this will be an argument, but he hopes the urgency of it all will make it less likely that they'll waste time on a disagreement.

"That's enough, come on," he says, taking Jayce by the shoulder. Viktor can tell he's overexerting himself, which means he's obligated to step in. "I can take a turn."

Himeka Sui | The Fool | OTA

[personal profile] aquaveiled 2022-07-01 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
preparation

[ As is expected, Himeka readily volunteers herself to assist with what the mages think is best. She's ever curious about the magicks of this world and, really, who doesn't like Rowan? As light-hearted as she tries to keep things at times, there are noticeable bags around her eyes, beguiling the sleep she's tried to forgo to keep her own demons at bay. Yet she's still willing to share snacks with others on the way to the ritual site.

Which is...odd. And horrifying in a quiet sort of way. But a gathering quest seems easy enough all things considered. Himeka is using the apron of her dress as a make-shift basket (not to mix with the snacks she has in her satchel), carefully plucking what she believes is the appropriate herb from a nearby bush.

But she keeps looking over her shoulder. ]

...Could you do that?

[ She asks the person nearest towards her and nods her head to one of the statues in a questionable yoga-like pose. ]

the ritual

[ It couldn't have been as simple as just smudging the area with the herbs, could it? No, of course not. She doesn't want to admit that her own fingers begin to shake slightly as she quickens the pace of her weaving, casting an uneasy glance towards a statue that begins to look more and more like the thing she's been trying to avoid.

Of course they can't just put the basket on a statue's head or something. Of course there's something being concocted inside. But as the basket is passed to Himeka, she only hesitates for a moment before taking a big gulp.

She makes a face as she passes the basket to the next person. ]

It's sour.

[ Which is really the least of their problems. The fact that the statues are all about them, it's hard to tell which ones are the next to take on the appearance of their realized nightmares. But this isn't a battle that can be fought with her usual spells. She looks at the simple chalk that's place in her hand before gripping it tightly and turning to her comrades for the evening. ]

Shall we?
