Open Log - Thorne Castle
Who: Nadine and OPEN
Where: Thorne Castle
When: June 12th and 13th
What: Meeting roommates, getting acclimated, exploring
Warnings: N/A, will add if needed
Exploring
There's little to do but poke around wherever they're allowed to poke around. And, while at it, slip out a few sweets from the dining hall to share with the less fortunate. Nadine made a promise, after all.
But there's plenty to see, in this area they're kept to. The library and the study hall are of the most interest, the books and practicing mages likely the most promising option for learning anything worthwhile. Their hosts are being very specific with what they say and what they don't, offering just enough information to avoid accusations of keeping everyone entirely in the dark. But still not sharing all they know, it's obvious there's much more going on than any newcomer is privy to.
That's alright. It's not ideal but it's alright. Nadine has her purpose to put herself towards, and she does. She can be found flipping through book after book in the library and muttering under her breath or quietly watching magic lessons in the study hall, eyes narrowed and lips pursed as she follows as best she can.
And of course, she makes sure to linger in the dining hall, idling by the offerings of food and perusing them seemingly casually. When she thinks she isn't being watched, she'll slip a small morsel of dessert or chocolate treat into her tunic sleeve.
Room 2
The idea of shared quarters is not one that Nadine is thrilled about. She'd already met one earlier, and somehow, through some blessed - or cursed - twist of fate, it's a friendly face. Sort of. She'd never met Lloyd before but she knows who he is, and any right hand of her husband's...he's on her side, is the point. Someone she can, to some extent trust. And who'll look out for her.
But there are two beds who's occupants she's yet to meet, and she's too pragmatic to imagine they'll be left empty. Especially now, the day winding down. It's been a hectic and long one, and Nadine's feeling it in her bones. She settles on her own bed, curtains open, and hands folded in her lap to contemplate her next move and wait for whoever she's stuck sharing her personal space with.

This doesn't look promising. Nadine maintains a neutral expression as the strange man comes into the room. He's big, he's unfamiliar, and he doesn't look thrilled. Not that she imagines anyone who's been kidnapped to this place is, but it still stands out to her. This is the sort of person that, should she see him on the sidewalk late at night, she'd start faking a phone call and have her keys in her free hand. Except they're not on an empty street late at night, they're in her bedroom. Their bedroom, she supposes. Whoever came up with rooming arrangements apparently hadn't been paying much attention to the fine details.
"I'm the only one I've seen so far," she responds, after giving the newcomer a once over. She stays where she's seated, hands tightly gripped together in her lap. "I'm Nadine. Are you...staying here, too?"
Maybe he's just looking for someone.

"Kylo Ren," he replies.
For all his aura of vague, directionless menace, Kylo does at least seem to know better than to stalk any closer. He watches her size him up, then gestures to the bed she's perched on.
"And I thought that was my bed."
Not that it really matters. There are three others, and Kylo can just as easily take any one of them. Mostly, he's just curious. Will she surrender it or hold her ground?
no subject
Nadine glances at the bed she's sitting on and back to the man who's name was Kylo Ren. Unless one of those is a title, she knows better to assume. There are people from all different worlds here, not just Earth.
The specifications of the sleeping arrangements raise an eyebrow. She doesn't care one way or another which bed is 'hers', they're exactly alike as far as she can see. But the fact he brought it up is something to take note of.
"Kind of hard to tell, when we don't have any things to mark what's ours. If it matters, I can take another one. I think they're all the same. I just took this one because it's next to my friend's."
And she wants to stick close to Lloyd. With Flagg locked up downstairs, he's...pretty much all she has here.
no subject
She has a point, of course, and any real objection Kylo may have had dissolves as she explains herself. She wants those two beds, which leaves the other two for Ronan and himself.
He assumes. It's possible Ronan is the friend she's referring to, but it doesn't seem likely— if only because of the blow it would be to his ego if Ronan hadn't singled him out specifically.
"Your friend?" he asks in a tone about as close to polite as he's capable, taking a seat on the edge of the bed closest. Ronan, he imagines, will prefer the one beyond. Kylo Ren as a breakwater between him and the others.

The implication that they knew each other already is intended. As far as Nadine's concerned, they did. Lloyd knew her, she knows who he is and the importance he holds for her husband. And god knows they have to stick together here.
"He's a good person, he looks after me."
no subject
"Does he."
Politeness stretches thin as Kylo wonders, quite obviously, if Nadine is trying to warn him. Don't try anything, because I have a good person who looks after me. His head tilts.
"And your same place. Is it like this one?"
no subject
It's partial warning, but mostly reassuring herself that she's not alone in this place. Even kept apart from Flagg, she has someone. After so long looking after herself and only having herself to depend on in the here and now, it's a relief to have someone else to rely on and lean on.
If she wants to warn or threaten anyone, it's not Lloyd's name she's going to bring up.
"And no, we're from Earth. The United States? It's a lot different than here, there's more technology, there's no magic like here, people don't live in castles or anything. We have TV and computers and cars."
no subject
Earth, again. He's heard the name a few times now, which is puzzling, troubling or both— has everyone else been brought here from the same stunted planet?
It's not just his distaste for appearing ignorant that keeps him from pursuing the question further, however. Hearing that Nadine's husband has been imprisoned as one of Thorne's failures, supposedly due to the grave threat he poses, Kylo loses interest in TV and the United States, for now at least.
"They say they're a threat," he comments. "The prisoners. Do you know why they would have imprisoned him, but not you or your friend?"
no subject
"I don't know. I don't even know why they wanted me in the first place, I'm...a pretty boring person by nature." Her destiny and status as Flagg's queen aside. "I don't have any magic, I don't have any special skills, the most remarkable thing about me is I married someone important back home. He...runs a city."
That's the safest way to put it. And it's true, Vegas is Flagg's kingdom. And hers, now, if she ever makes it there.
no subject
For Kylo, ostensibly Supreme Leader of the galaxy following Snoke's demise, running a city isn't quite the flex it might be for most people. For Thorne? He isn't sure. Certainly hearing that Nadine has no powers or magic of her own blows a hole in most of his theories regarding the reasons the High Mage might have summoned them in the first place, which has his brow drawn into a deep furrow.
"Perhaps they want your city," he suggests dubiously. "You treated well while he languishes in the dungeons. Leverage."
no subject
Nadine is quiet a moment, the idea turning over in her head and making some amount of sense. Both she and Lloyd are important to Flagg, his queen and his right hand man. Only so many people are truly important to him, and not disposable. There may be something to that.
But she's not going to share her thoughts. Flagg is much more than just some regularly powerful man, the people of Thorne should be afraid of him. Once he's free...but if Kylo's right, the situation may be more delicate than she'd originally believed.
"Maybe it is something like that. Well, I guess we'll find out eventually. Or we won't. But if they want anything from us, I imagine I'm not the only one with demands."
no subject
"Demands?"
It's a prompt, rather than a question. His expression suggests he thinks the idea of demanding anything from their hosts is foolish at best, though he stops just short of saying as much.
no subject
If they're this important, whoever's in charge will negotiate. At least to an extent, Nadine supposes. There always lines, but she doesn't think reasonable requests would be any big offense.
no subject
"They have your husband in a dungeon and they can just as easily put you down there too," Kylo points out neatly. "That's why you'll do what they say. You can ask them for favours, if you want. But none of us are in any position to make demands."
no subject
They haven't put her in a cell yet, so Nadine doesn't think that's any real danger. She might be wrong, she knows that, but she feels relatively confident than a few requests aren't going to get her thrown in a dungeon. Not if Thorne wants to maintain it's welcoming, friendly face.
