NEBULOUS TIME SPACE sorry for the late tag-in, overestimated tagging speed while out of the country

[ Kahlil has a simple rule when it comes to wandering these spaces: he doesn't attempt to enter any domain that isn't already open. Doors, gates, tangles of plant-life, as long as nothing looks explicitly closed, he lets himself in. It's one way to vent his frustrations at months of being trapped in Thorne and hindered by the wards, surrounded by what amounts to closed doors everywhere he turns.

This domain appears larger than most, though he's come to realize that some of the more massive landscapes are at least in part an illusion. He spends some time exploring the outer wall before making his way inside, observing the strange laboratory while keeping his hands to himself: another rule he tries to abide by. He won't go through drawers or anything like that.

The workshop doesn't need him to, though. There's papers everywhere, and he's too distracted by the odd schematics laid out in front of him to notice the figure hidden behind the stack of books - ]

Sorry. [ He bows his head slightly, but doesn't seem particularly contrite as he studies the other man, eyebrows raised. ] These are all your creations?

[ He lets his gaze sweep the room, and out the doorway toward the main laboratory where that strange device was... ]

[ At the question he gives a shrug, and gives the honest answer: ]

A little. [ When it comes to the ins and outs of rifles he knows a lot, sure. But nothing like this kind of engineering or technology. It wasn't taught by the priests in Rathal'pesha, and most advances were outright discouraged outside of Vundomu.

Or, it was that way, in his memory. He shakes his head after a second. ]

I grew up in the middle of nowhere, I was in awe the first time I saw a television... [ He looks again toward the main laboratory where the glowing cube-like thing is. ]

What is that?

[ It's beautiful. ]

[ A conduit? He hums in response and wonders for what - though he sets the question aside for now, returning to the subject of television since that seems to have shifted the man's demeanor in a more positive direction. ]

There's a tavern domain called the Roadhouse that has a television, I go there sometimes to flip through the channels. [ Just for fun, when no one's around. He would add more content beyond what's already available, but considering it's not his domain that seems rude. ]

In Hoirzon if you were to take one apart to look inside, would it be empty unless the creator knew all the inner workings already?

[ He's never thought about it before, but he assumes it must be the same for televisions or any electronical device as it is for books - blank pages inside unless he's read the whole thing. ]

[ He nods. There's a lot of information sharing and teaching that can be done here, so long as you have a good memory. He's gaze sweeps the room again, his tactile nature urging him to touch some of the objects of the desk, but he keeps his hands to himself and folded behind his back.

A beat, and he raises an eyebrow. He's never seen this man around the castle, and he might feel a bit sorry for him if he landed in Solvunn, given what he knows of the settlements more rural nature. ]

You... wouldn't happen to be one of the men that were advertising their business out of Cadens some weeks ago? Making weapons and other useful things? [ A beat, then he offers an introduction himself. ]

I'm Kyle. Currently living in Thorne.

[ It's a sense of respect and politeness he extends in these domains. They are part of the creator, to lesser and greater degrees. He might not mind someone going through the books in his temple, picking fruits or touching the tea sets, but those things are not so unfamiliar and possibly breakable to most.

Huh. There's a slight flicker of surprise at the correction. ]

You make things like - [ he juts his chin toward the strange glowing cube, curious again. ] - arcane conduits?

[ Circling back to his original question. ] What is it for?

[ He nods again. With every conversation he's reminded more and more of Nayeshi. Computers were common, he remembers using on in a library. A boxy structure with a screen - not unlike a television, and a taller 'tower'. However, it reminds him nothing of the beautiful object just outside. ]

A computer for spellcasting. [ He frowns a bit. ] Where would it source energy from?

[ The Singularity itself? He can't imagine that would go over well with the factions. ]

Ambient magical energy?

[ He repeats the words as a question, still frowning slightly. ]

What does it do to the environment, to remove that energy and... repurpose it? [ Use it up?

His blood, his skin, his flesh, and his tears. All that, until the world is alive...

He's not someone particularly attuned to nature, not the way he remembers John must've been. But there is always a cost to these types of magic. Even god did not create something out of nothing. ]

[ Maybe that's true. There is much more magic in this world than exists in Basawar. But Kahlil believes in some core tenets across the many worlds, has soon enough similarities to not only be relying on blind faith -

- speaking of: ]

Could your Hexcore, possibly, open a gate between worlds?

[ When he explains the teleportation technology, he gives him another curious look, and for a second seems to be considering his next words carefully. These are two very different problems to him.

Selfishly, he wonders if this man might be able to help him with the issues he's been having traveling via the Gray Space, if this work became anything more than theory, he'd also need to do something about the protective spells and wards in this world.

But there is a larger issue, and he's only just met this person. Most of the people he considers his friends don't know the extent of his abilities.

His expression turns grim. ]

There were those where I'm from who could travel from one world to another. But there was no ambient magical energy to draw from without cost, and it required an immense sacrifice to control that power. I worry that this world is more like mine than yours, even with your device's help.

[ The key itself required the death of a god.

Another pause. ]

Teleporting over land - Thorne uses portals for travel from city to city, but if you're using less-than-official channels of movement, protective wards basically make it impossible to go very far. If you happen to have any ideas, theoretically, for how to bypass those, I'd be curious to hear about them.

[ Since, you know, he'd need to figure that out for his own device to make use of teleportation anyway. ]

[ He considers the question. ]

My way is not instantaneous. It's more... a folding of space that I can navigate. It shortens the travel time immensely. I can show you here in Horizon - I think.

[ He's never tried to show someone else before - not the inside of the Gray Space. Theoretically he might be able to actually give someone else a look into that space.

He flicks his wrist, and what looks like a tear in reality appears there some feet away from them - the same way he would do in the real world. He splits his forefinger and thumb farther apart and the tear widens horizontally.

What Viktor sees if he looks at the inside the tear: the same view of his study, but in a strange greyscale. The darkest objects are anything metal, they turn almost black inside this space. There's something else if he looks closely enough, strange refractions in the air, as if there are hard and sharp edges.

From the outside he'll feel cold air coming out of the tear. It smells sterile.

A place between time and space.

As soon as the tear is open wide enough to see all this, though, Kahlil will hold his arm out in front of Viktor. Just in case he attempts to move closer to it. ]

I don't know what it will do to someone who attempts to go inside. There's a chance it will still rip you apart, even in Horizon.

[personal profile] ushiri 2023-01-02 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[ After a moment he lowers his arm, allowing him a better look now that he has the warning. He shouldn't be able to hold the tear open like for so long this in realspace without significantly more effort, but Horizon is powered by will so - ]

For the most part. Nothing in there is totally solid, there are ways to push through any material. With enough momentum and nothing blocking my way, I could probably travel from the northern-most point of the continent to the southern-most in a couple of hours. [ He shakes his head, then steps closer, pointing at one of those floating, sharp refractions in front of the opposite wall. ]

But in places where the texture is more like that - I can't do much without getting stuck. [ Or worse. He makes a face. ] They occur naturally sometimes, but they're concentrated anywhere that has wards or protective spells.

[ In a worst case scenario, he thinks he could make it to Thorne's border. Probably barely clinging to life, but, well, worst case scenario. ]
