1.

Jon wakes up outside the rim of the crater with a sense of gentle, falling disappointment, staring up at the sky. He simply lays there for a while in the long grass, hands folded on his stomach, unmoving. It's one of the guards accompanying the mages that first notices he's awake, and they're swift to pull him to his feet. The guard who grabs his wrist to recuff him makes a startled sound when one of the three broad scars across Jon's throat opens and blinks lazily at him, and when another eye winks from the back of his neck, the guard escorting him back to the group pushes harder than necessary, sending him to his knees.

It's there he goes still, frozen, his eyes – all of his eyes, in their dozens now, every scar opening to show a different shade of iris with pinprick pupils – go wide as the voice sounds inside his head, for him alone, a dead language hissing like static between his ears.

and when they finally get him up, he staggers where he's pushed, stands where he's left, numb, pale, and breathing fast.

2.

He's still just as unsettled when they're returned to the cells. He manages to retreat to his bed, although there's no sleep for him. The new eyes don't all shut, not when he wants them too, and he twitches at every voice. Twitches and relaxes again when he realizes they're safe, he's only hearing them with his ears.

It takes him until the next day to begin to breathe easily again, and even then, the equanimity he displayed before the Horizon is gone. Instead of sitting by the bars to see who's coming down the corridor, now he paces, jaw so tense his head aches. It's not the Eye. He knows that much. What it is, what it might be, he doesn't know. And he fears.

It's true that not eating worries people, and Phoenix is pleased that Jon can bring himself to eat right now. He crosses his arms, hesitating before answering his question.

"...Yes, people have. Kay can turn into a raven now. I can turn into a bird too." It's really weird to say out loud. I can turn into a bird. How has this become his life? "Something... happened there. I don't know what. I'm just a lawyer."

He crosses his arms, his brow creasing in concern. "I'm going to try to do everything I can for you, but it's not looking good. Ambrose is furious, and there's no appeal process for people he sentences."

"I don't know. It didn't occur to me to try."

It doesn't escape him that Jon is avoiding the topic of Ambrose. He doesn't really blame him. Staring down one's own death is never a happy thing.

But it is Phoenix's job to do unhappy things sometimes. "You haven't lost hope, have you?"

Phoenix lets out a harsh sigh, crossing his arms and frowning. "I figured. But whether you expected it or not, that doesn't mean we should act like there's nothing that can be done."

Phoenix isn't sure what can be done besides try to talk Ambrose around, but Ambrose isn't hearing anything on Jon's behalf. That is... Phoenix isn't sure what can be done legally for Jon.

Phoenix did not get this far without dealing with difficult clients. He frowns, cocking his head.

"He hasn't. He didn't seem surprised by what happened. I'm not so sure this was the first time people went there."

He just needs to think. How can they get Jon out of this mess? Can his skill set even be of use here?

Phoenix huffs at the information. "Honestly, at this point? I wouldn't be shocked if he was thousands of years old and happened to be one of the people who did it."

That's probably not the case. But would it be so weird after all this other stuff?

"What I don't get is why they're so desperate to control this thing when it seems like it's just been sitting there forever."
iobject: (Eyeroll)

Another ageless prick? Phoenix wants to ask more questions about that, but he thinks there's more important things to worry about right this second.

"All of those options sound terrible." Phoenix wrinkles his nose. Is that... really all everyone can think to do? Control the massively powerful diminishing thing, destroy it, or ignore it and hope it stops diminishing? "If the problem is it's not doing what it's supposed to do anymore, maybe it just needs someone to take care of it."

Admittedly, Phoenix has no idea what he's talking about. He knows little about magic and even less about the Singularity. But he can't help but think that if a natural resource is diminishing, then the first line of thinking should be the question of whether or not that resource can be renewed.

"And I think that given what we've seen of his judgment so far, he's arrogant to think he even can control it, and if he can, that he wouldn't make it all worse."

Phoenix does not think well of Ambrose. He's avoided saying it outright for a while, but staring at someone he's put on death row, Phoenix can't help but say it. Ambrose may be an expert in his field, but he's a complete idiot when it comes to people. Maybe he's made a scant handful of allies, but he's made far more enemies doing things the way he has, and he doesn't seem aware of it.
