"Yeah that's her, she's great, next time say hi. Inej is one of the sweetest and wisest people you'll ever meet." She's young but she is wise beyond her years. All of the Crows have lived through a great deal despite their short years. They may as well be twice as old considering.
As for the conflict with Kaz, well.
"We met when he pulled me out of the gutter and helped pay off my debts." In a way, he rescued Jesper from a one-way direction of inevitable murder. He was selling his skills but it wasn't good enough. He and Inej have joked that Kaz set it all up, saving him, which he probably did, but it doesn't make him any less grateful. "He gave me a job, put me into a special position right at his side."
Which is a huge deal for Kaz, who trusts no one. Except there was something about the two of them from day one. They were drawn to one another. The way Jesper talks about him is with some reverence and no small amount of love, a touch of anguish with it at the moment.
"When he came here I made a big deal about being good now and that I wouldn't nearly get us all killed like before. My addiction has put us in danger." Specifically it nearly killed Inej, something he still feels guilt over.
"It doesn't matter that we all were messed up over it, it's personal for us. There's history. And also well ...." Now he really flushes. "We've talked about something between us but haven't gone anywhere with it, and I tried to ... seduce him into not being mad at me. Which crossed some significant boundaries between us."
He sighs. "And it hurt him, not that he'd admit it." For Jesper to use their new connection to try and manipulate him was rough. They had to take a step backward.
