( nope, not at all. is that something he wants to give away just yet? no, it's not. so, he just shakes his head. )

No, we're all normal and boring where I come from. Just a bunch of people who don't lock our doors at night.

What kind of abilities?

["Normal and boring" is what most people from his world believe, too. It wasn't as though it was a widely known fact that there were psionic kids being held in a government lab somewhere -- maybe this man's world was much the same, with secrets layered beneath the surface without him knowing.

Not that Henry can do anything than take his word for it, of course. Normal, boring.]

The kind that uses the mind. [He raises a hand to tap at a temple, then drops it to rest on the railing again.] Moving objects without touching them... Telekinesis. That's the term they use in books and movies, right?

[The plot thickens, and yet Henry is not going to spill all of his little secrets day one.]

Oh, no. I only worked there. I'd be under study, too, otherwise.

( it looks like they are...both liars, doesn't it? a match made in lying heaven.

but, kai doesn't press because he can accept that at face value. sounds just fine to him. )

And no one wants to be studied, do they? Who signs up for a poking and prodding and all that blood work?

[It's fine. Maybe the truth will reveal itself someday. But for now-]

No one. [An easy answer. No point in sugar-coating that.] I once described that place as a prison, nevermind my status as an employee there. It wasn't far off the mark. If those kids were given a chance to leave... I believe they would have.

No one ever tried?

( he tilts his head to one side, curious. )

Prison break?

[He shrugs a shoulder, looking out towards the goats and the land that expands beyond their pen.]

One girl did, actually. Escaped and never looked back. It's almost enviable.

Good for her.

( he wishes he could have done that in his prison world. he'd tried a variety of ways but —

Never saw her again?

No. I do wonder where she's gone off to, sometimes.

[It's something he feels strangely about. Satisfaction at knowing one finally slipped under the lab's noses, while bitterness at not being able to leave himself.]

I guess it doesn't matter now. I won't ever be seeing her again in this place.

Would you even recognize her if she was here?

( seems to him that just about anyone from anytime can show up here. he surely hadn't expected it but here he was, ensconced in another prison world with cows.

[Would he? Hard to say. And equally hard to say if his reply is serious or not.]

Maybe. But it's hard to forget a frown like the one she wore.

( yes, he's known people like that. and he's not going to press the issue because now he's focused elsewhere and laughing. )

I've known people like that. Who you could go years without seeing but then they'd frown or cry or get all angry and stomp their foot and it was instantly like the years vanished.

[His brow quirks.]

An old friend?

Friend, acquaintance, beloved long lost family member. Any one of those.

( that's pretty vague but he doesn't care. he shrugs. )

No one like that is here for me. Lone wolf right here.

[vecna]

[Vague is right. But Henry nearly shrugs a shoulder, his smile tinged with amused solidarity at the edges.]

Well. You and me both. Though I hope you're willing to make new and exciting new acquaintances while you're here.

That is the plan.

( for many reasons. at least henry's a little more interesting than most people he's met. he can appreciate that. )
