MINI-EVENT: CODA - IC EVENT LOG

Mini-Event - Coda

Mid-April, you receive two formal invitations. They arrive separately in two distinct envelopes and do not appear to be precisely related.
◎ The first is from Solvunn, signed and sealed by the Solvunn Council. It informs the reader that on April 18th, Josselyn Creed's fate will be publicly carried out according to Solvunn's traditions with the Old Gods. The location is in neutral territory, a safe distance from the Singularity's crater. The Council expresses deep regret for the actions of one of their own and invites you to attend as an observer if you wish to find closure. Portals are provided. The proceedings will be in the morning.

◎ The second is from your respective faction. The letter is less solemn and invites you to attend a weekend gala on April 21st - 23rd. It acknowledges that recent times have been difficult and that faction officials and locals wish to repay the Summoned for their contributions. Portals to each location are provided.
Divine Judgment
In the weeks leading up to Josselyn Creed's execution, many of you were allowed to question Josselyn. Now that you've received the answers you're seeking - as much as you were able to - officials have granted you the chance to gain some closure and witness her execution.

The factions will warn the Summoned that Solvunn does not take angering the Gods lightly. Her death will not be quick and will likely be sacrificial. They advise anyone who may not have the stomach for it to remain home and enjoy the festivities at the end of the week.

Attending her execution is optional and open to all. New arrivals are welcome to watch...though they may not want to. All characters may skip this portion of the event.

Participants of Event #12 are still welcome to speak to Josselyn. This section will close on April 30th.
Last Rites
CW: Disturbing imagery, animal death, ritualistic sacrifice, body horror.

So that all can attend, Solvunn will perform Josselyn's last rites in neutral territory. Anyone who attended the Peace Summit last year will recognize the area, though the colorful tents are gone. In their place are some plain stone benches and a temporary altar. Thick mists roll into the valley, bringing a chill to the air. As you arrive, you see Solvunn mages instructing volunteers to right certain stones as the last touches are added. Present to represent the other two factions are Jolene Sybell of Thorne and Reva Hym of the Free Cities.

The stones are arranged in spiraling circles, with twelve arches that span them. Carved into the ground beneath the arches are each of the Major Arcana. Find your matching Arcana and leave an offering if you want. You're told the gesture will appease the gods and ensure the "cleansing" is successful.

The Moon, Josselyn Creed's Arcana, has been carved into the center stone. If you share her Arcana or are The Emperor or Justice, Solvunn mages will approach and ask you to write your name in charcoal into the stone. If you bear any of the other signs, you can also do so, but you won't be asked directly.
Preparation
Soon, a hush falls over the crowd as Isar Hart comes forward with a black sheep in tow. Several Solvunn Elders flank the sheep as it's placed before the altar. They paint large winding lines and runes on its wool and face. Winifred Bordeaux turns to the crowd. She states that the wrongs born of the commune are always made right by Solvunn's hands and seeks forgiveness. The gods may cast judgment as they see fit.

Mages begin a haunting chant in an ancient tongue. With a large bone knife, Winifred kneels next to the sheep and slices its throat. As warm blood flows over the ground, it fills each etched Arcana sigil. The sigils glow a faint red upon contact, and the grass around them withers and blackens. Once fully drained, the Elders carefully skin the sheep. Its organs are placed in jars as it is hollowed out. With the skin removed, the Elders lay it on the altar and declare that those who stray from the gods must be brought back into the fold.

One of the stones vibrates, releasing Josselyn Creed into the hands of waiting Elders. As she's dragged to the altar's center, she decries Solvunn for being blind, accusing them of turning away from the truth. The old ways have long stopped serving them, she declares. The Old Gods are no longer listening.
Penance
Holding her in place, Rowan March places the skin of the black sheep upon her. The wool stretches outward to envelop her limbs, covering every part of her in the pelt and muffling her shouts. As each bone bends and snaps loudly in the silence to take the form of a sheep, her body collapses with anguished cries. Finally, a mass of quivering wool and human sinew is left, the sheep's face ajar on her broken skull.

The chanting reaches a crescendo, then stops abruptly. The mist thickens, swirling towards the altar. Your surroundings darken. From the gloom comes a massive bird-like silhouette. Its enormous wings shadow the sky, blocking out the sun. Though the figure's form is obscured, the dozens of vultures that descend are visible - and so is the feast that ensues.

Through the fog and shadow, you glimpse blood and flesh tearing. Slowly, the mist begins to clear as each bird takes its fill. The silhouette above withdraws. What remains before you is a pile of bones picked clean...and the recognizable head of Josselyn Creed beneath the sheep's mask, the only part of her uneaten.
Immolation
The Council allows all in attendance to confirm Josselyn's identity and her fate, ensuring that the factions and the Summoned are satisfied with the outcome. A ritual fire lights up on the altar. Her head is placed in first by one of the Elders.

The rest of her bones are in the sheepskin. No blood or flesh remains. The pelt is startlingly clean for such a gory display. You're invited to paint your Arcana on a bone and place the bone into the fire as a gesture to the gods that you've accepted the punishment they chose for her.

The atmosphere is solemn. Winifred offers her thanks on behalf of the Council for allowing Solvunn to make amends for Josseyn's misdeeds. They deeply regret this was necessary but promise they'll take steps to ensure it never happens again.

A few remain to watch her bones finish burning. You may join them if you like or return home at once. A harsh silence fills the ceremonial grounds as you step through the portal.

Weekend Gala
Several days after the execution, the cities prepare for the feast and gala. On the day of, portals will open up in the main hub of each city: Castle Thorne in Thorne, the Primary Settlement in Solvunn, and Cadens in the Free Cities.

You're welcome to arrive on the first day or skip the speeches and arrive on the second day for the main dinner and event. Everyone will be sent home on the third day (April 23rd), though the factions would be happy if you'd like to volunteer to clean up and take down decorations before you go. Not to worry if you'd rather go home - they have plenty of staff and locals for the job.

Each city will provide a place for you to stay for the weekend. They'll choose their best inns for you, except Solvunn. Solvunn will offer a comfortable communal tent for all attendees to share.
Thorne (Hayle)
The first evening, the King and Queen will gather guests into a grand hall at Hayle University. The King formally welcomes and expresses Thorne's gratitude for everyone's safe return. He heralds the Summoned and those involved in the terrible incident for their fortitude and bravery. The Queen follows afterward, adding that she is glad justice has been served and that they can be assured Josselyn Creed can never harm anyone again. She acknowledges the formation of the Summoned Conclave and promises Thorne will always serve those who are steadfast in their loyalty.

In a rare moment, Ambrose Rhett and the Duchess, Anastasia Rhett, can be spotted standing side by side in the background. Jolene Sybell is also present. Ambrose, however, will not be seen past the welcoming speech, returning to the Castle after.
Gifts
As a resident of Thorne, you'll receive a gift bag containing:
◎ A sweet dream potion that grants the user happy dreams and a good night's sleep. A basic spell, these potions were made by schoolchildren in Hayle as a thank-you gift for the Summoned. The custom label on each bottle has your name handwritten and decorated by the kids. If you're known around the Castle, it might contain a drawing that represents your reputation - for example, a flower if you have a green thumb. They've been told a bit about the Summoned by officials and their teachers.

◎ A jade turtle that, when placed in a bowl or pool of water, is enchanted to swim around. A novel decorative piece that calls back to the giant sea turtle which came to aid you and your friends on Thorne's shores.

◎ A soothing galaxy orb that displays the starry night sky within. When placed in front of some light, it'll cast a pretty sparkle over your surroundings.
Surroundings
Located far north, Hayle is most famous for its beautiful crystalline architecture. The weather is warmer now that spring has arrived, but relatively cool with temperatures dipping at night. Vast mountains are in the distance for a breathtaking view.

Hayle bustles with vibrant energy and a diverse population. Where Castle Thorne closely follows the formal traditions of the nobility and traditional Academic Magic, Hayle is trendier with innovative spellwork, the newest designs in fashion, and a vast library of knowledge.
◎ Arcana Deck Exhibit
Expensive custom-crafted Arcana decks are under glass cases like fine jewels. One notable attraction is an exhibit displaying one-of-a-kind decks designed by famous artists or enchanted by renowned mages in Thorne's history. Some boast intricately painted designs and real gold, while others use precious gems embedded in the cards themselves. One preserved deck is carved entirely on pinewood.

◎ Boutiques
Boutiques sell tailored clothes and fine jewelry that include Arcana-inspired accessories. Luxury magical tools are also available such as gold scales for weighing potion ingredients. Some bookshops specialize in signed or antique copies. The contents are nothing special, but editions are considered collectibles. Though most aren't for sale except to the wealthiest individuals, you're free to look.

◎ Makeover & Performers
Street performers occupy every corner around Hayle: stories told through illusions, musician-less instruments, and juggling acts that incorporate impressive balls of colorful light. You can get your portrait drawn by an enchanted paintbrush or volunteer for one of the illusionists to give you a temporary "makeover." The makeover will grant you one or more features of your choosing that will last 24 hours: a new hair or eye color (including unnatural shades!), translucent illusory wings (they won't get in the way), or decorative nails.

Personal shopping and styling assistance is also offered by Lenore and Natasha Romanoff.
Banquet
The banquet takes place on the second evening, held in Hayle University's finest ballroom. Decorations are delicate and elegant. The chandelier above drips with crystals and gold.

Although you'll have an assigned seat to start with, there's no need to stay where you are. Guests are encouraged to mingle and wander around. Make friends, meet new people, and introduce yourselves!
◎ Food & Drink
A formal multi-course dinner will be served throughout the night. The wine flows freely and food is abundant. Thorne is known for its exquisite cuisine, and Hayle is no different. With the harsh winter over and farmlands slowly recovering from the attack last summer, the nation is no longer struggling as much with supplies. Dishes include stuffed duck, delicate fish, rare nutty cheeses, soup, and plenty of cakes and biscuits.

◎ Entertainment
Formal entertainment involves music, dancing, and magic shows. You're welcome to take the stage yourself, of course! If you're not good at what you do, the citizens won't boo you off the stage, but you'll feel an awkward atmosphere begin to build, and word might spread about your act. The nobility in Thorne has exacting standards and a penchant for gossip.

Musical performances include original compositions on the violin and piano by Lestat de Lioncourt and elvish songs by Elrond, while Lord John Grey will recite some poetry and music. Magical displays include illusory lights featuring the Arcana signs by Istredd, flashy divination magicks channeled through a tarot deck by Urianger, and a light-based display of intricate mandalas Stephen Strange - whose third eye may be glimpsed beneath his hood when he casts his Eldritch magic.

◎ Night's End
The banquet runs late into the night, though you can leave any time. A carriage will be waiting to take you back to your inn. You can stay for one last social breakfast in the morning before returning to Castle Thorne through the portal.
Free Cities (Libertas)
The first evening, the Prime Minister will gather guests by the mosaic sculpture in the Willow Memorial Park. Prime Minister Marlo expresses her gratitude for everyone's safe return and apologizes for the atrocities that occurred under her watch. The bravery and fortitude of those involved will be remembered. Fortunately, justice has found those responsible, and the city can begin to march forward. She acknowledges the formation of the Summoned Conclave, promising that her government will make sure nothing like this ever happens again to its people. The Summoned are, of course, people of the Free Cities regardless of where they came from.

Quilleth Kaur takes the stand afterward, addressing the tragedy that struck Libertas not long ago and personally thanking the Summoned for their help in rescuing survivors and rebuilding the city. This includes the construction of the park itself, led by two of the Free Cities' longest Summoned residents. She bids everyone to enjoy the festivities. They deserve to relax and feast after a harrowing experience.
Gifts
As a resident of the Free Cities, you'll receive a gift basket containing:
Tickets to a special comeback show by one of Libertas' most famous acrobatic troupes - their first since the city's destruction. The envelope includes a letter which addresses you by name and thanks you for your help. If you've made an impression on the citizens of Libertas, the letter will mention noteworthy things you've contributed, such as volunteer efforts or donations. The tickets grant you the best seats in the house and a free drink during intermission. Performances are held throughout April and May, so you'll have plenty of time to attend.

◎ A kazoo, best used to annoy your friends or heckle anyone you find disagreeable, though beware that the people of Libertas won't hesitate to brawl on the street over insults.

◎ Luxurious bath crystal balls that fizzle and give the water a beautiful shimmer. Infused with medicinal properties, they'll alleviate aching muscles and lingering pains.
Surroundings
Located far south, Libertas is most famous for its subversive attitude and colorful architecture. With winter on the way out, the weather is warm but not scorching hot as it can be in the summer. Rare spring rains have caused flowers to bloom and sprout around the desert.

Libertas is diverse and lax in social norms. Where Cadens boasts the best research and technology, Libertas' focus is on advancements in free thought, art, and knowledge. Following the art walk not long ago and the long-term portal to Libertas, some of these attitudes have filtered into Cadens.
◎ Artist Alleys
The collapse of the city's buildings has caused street art to greatly flourish. Winding alleyways between homes and shops contain paintings, written poetry on the walls, and musical performances. Sculptor Axn Kade, famous for his pieces made of reclaimed metal and his activism for mining safety, has added a new sculpture to the city's streets. The plaque contains a dedication to the Summoned who helped clean up the mining equipment a few months ago, having used the scrap metal gathered during that process.

◎ Gambling Halls & Brews
Rejecting government oversight, Libertas is home to several gambling halls of all types. If you have the money, you're sure to find a spot to suit you. Beware of loan sharks and play at your own risk. Taverns around Libertas are rowdy. They often have an open floor for art performances, poetry readings, and philosophical debates. Always open to new ideas, many places in Libertas host tastings for brews created using innovative flavors and techniques.

◎ Market Square
Though not as large as Aquila's market, the Libertas market square is still a sprawling maze. Anyone with something to sell will have squeezed a table or a stall into the area. Enterprising merchants will give you a demonstration of some of their products, most powered by New Magic: a comb that changes your hair color upon use, eye drops that give your irises an enchanting colorful glow, and disposable crystal accessories that take on the illusion of precious jewels for a short period - invented to undermine the value of gems. Any changes to your appearance are temporary, lasting 24 hours.

Before the feast, simple dance lessons are available from Caitlyn Kiramman.
Garden Feast
The feast takes place on the second evening, held at the Willow Memorial Park. Glowing orbs of light have been hung from the willow trees while vases made by a local potter feature flowers from the park's wildflower meadows. More details about the park are available under Locales for Libertas.

Provided by Viktor (and Jayce Talis), the center of the garden contains a revolving armillary sphere modeled after the astronomy of Abraxas, casting an atmospheric starry light over the area.

To start with, you'll pull your table number from a hat to receive your "assigned" seat, but there's no need to stay there all night. Guests are encouraged to mingle and wander around. Make friends, meet new people, and introduce yourselves!
◎ Food & Drink
An eclectic array of dishes line a large table at the park's center. Help yourself to what you like in any order. No one will bother you if you start with dessert! Wine, ales, and hard liquors are as plentiful as the food. Dishes include grilled fish and pork, dips and spreads, puddings, sweetbread, cakes, and seasonal fruits common to the desert climate, such as figs and oranges.

◎ Entertainment
Formal entertainment involves music, dancing, and poetry. Artists have been invited to unveil new pieces or showcase old favorites. You're welcome to take the stage yourself, of course! Performers won't be judged on talent so much as passion. As long as you're creative and genuinely enjoy your craft, you'll have the support of the locals.

Jaskier will put on a lute performance, including a ballad of Spyndlveiss containing themes related to the recent disappearances. Diana Prince will recite a short portion of The Iliad, in both Ancient Greek and common. A "blade dancing" display using a painted stave by Obi-wan Kenobi will take place, as well. Finally, Hilda Goneril will draw and paint quick "fashion sketches" to commemorate everyone's style - available to both small groups and individuals.

◎ Night's End
The feast runs late into the night, though you can leave any time. A wagon is available to bring you back to your inn, but most locals prefer to walk, creating a drunken parade of people through the streets while singing cheerfully. You can stay for one last social breakfast in the morning before returning to Cadens through the portal.
Solvunn (Primary Settlement)
The first evening, the two remaining members of the Council, along with Isar Hart, address the gathered, apologizing for the sheep who strayed from their flock. They're especially disappointed with the heretical actions of a trusted community member, whose name they will no longer acknowledge. The gods have cast their judgment, and now the community can come together to heal. The Council promises the newly formed Summoned Conclave that they are vital members of the commune and that Solvunn is here to aid them in whatever they need.

Isar Hart reiterates that his position on the Council is temporary until the seat can be filled, though the Council does not give a date for when this might occur.
Gifts
As a member of the Solvunn Commune, you'll receive a gift bag containing:
◎ A clay mug, handmade by children in the settlements. Each mug is customized for the individual based on what the children have managed to learn about you, painted with what they believe to be your favorite colors, flowers, patterns, or animals. How accurate the kids are about you varies depending on your interactions with them, but they've tried their best. The bottom of the mug is signed by the child who made it for you. If you run into them afterward, they might ask if you like your mug.

◎ Thick and comfortable knitted socks made from the wool of Isar Hart's sheep farm.

◎ A few sachets of herbal teas to help you get a good night's rest and restore your energy. A small thank-you note accompanies the teas, signed by Lorelai and Esmond, who are grateful for the chance to return home.
Surroundings
The southernmost of the settlements, the Secondary Settlement boasts vast sprawling farmlands and a beautiful shoreline overlooking the ocean. Skies are sunny and clear throughout the gathering. Wildflowers bloom across the flat plains, orchards are starting to bear fruit, and fish are plentiful once more.

The Secondary Settlement is sparsely populated but maintains a tight-knit community. Where the Primary Settlement is a hub for schooling, craftspeople, and artisans, the Secondary Settlement is focused on agriculture and livestock: sheep, goats, horses, and fields of crops fill the area. Many families take pride in supplying the commune with produce and materials like wool, eggs, milk, and grains.
◎ Farms & Livestock
Farms are open with fences solely to keep out any predators or pests. You're free to visit the fields and orchards. Pick apricots and cherries, pet the sheep, play with the baby goats, and gather eggs for the evening's potluck. Isar Hart will be pleased to show you his prized black sheep, whose majestic horns are greatly admired. Smaller gardens filled with flowers and herbs are also available to explore. If you'd like to put together bouquets for the evening or make flower wreaths to decorate, you can help yourself. Finally, you can fish to your heart's content in the nearby pond. Bring your catch to dinner!

◎ Shrines
After recent events, shrines around the Secondary Settlement are full of offerings to appease the gods and seek guidance. These offerings consist of animal bones, harvested fruit, and wine. You can add to the shrines if you like or simply visit them. Many shrines hum with magical energy and all previous signs of corruption over the past few weeks have faded. You can ask for blessings of health, luck, or abundance for yourself or others.

◎ Neighborly Help
Although Solvunn doesn't place much emphasis on extravagance, the evening's affair is an important one. They'd like to look their best. Members of the commune are all around the settlement to give you a hand to get ready. You can have someone style or braid your hair with ribbons, color it with natural dyes, or lend you some clothes and accessories if you don't have any. You can help them in return, as well. They're also happy to trade items with you.

Louis de Pointe du Lac will temporarily alter your clothes or appearance for the night using illusory magic.
Potluck
The potluck takes place on the second evening, held outdoors in one of the Secondary Settlement's spring meadows. Decorations are rustic and simple, consisting of fresh flowers and candles.

Mud-clay sculptures and masks are available from Nanaue, though they are not very sturdy. Nero will hand out colorful brochures.

There are no assigned seats. Tables and chairs are placed tightly together, along with natural seating created by tree stumps and boulders. You're encouraged to mingle and wander around. Though a sober hush lies over the gathering, the atmosphere is hopeful. The people of Solvunn look forward to better days.
◎ Food & Drink
Solvunn's potluck feast consists of dishes and drinks brought by everyone in the commune, including members of the Council. There are hearty stews and soups, freshly baked bread, butter churned that very morning, and a variety of Solvunn's famous goat cheeses. You're invited to contribute anything you like! Simply add your dish or dessert to the table. The centerpiece of the potluck is a pig roast. Mead and ale flow freely.

Wanda Maximoff will bring sečenica, propeć (both cheese and egg savory baked goods), and traditional fruit pies of plums, cherries, sugar, almonds, and vanilla sugar. Claire Fraser will provide a unique loose-leaf herbal tea blend.

◎ Entertainment
The people of Solvunn will sing, dance, and make music together. On occasion, there are pauses for someone to take the spotlight, but overall no one's center stage for long. Instruments are passed around, and guests are encouraged to join in. Due to recent events, many songs are subdued, speaking of honoring the gods. Later in the night, stories are exchanged around the campfires. One particular folktale is told by Rowan March about Spyndlveiss, a figure who captures wayward sheep on their way between the settlements. From these lost sheep, he makes sheepskin suits for hungry wolves to wear.

Eddie Munson will hold a lively musical performance.

◎ Night's End
The potluck runs late into the night, though you can leave any time. Large tents are nearby for you to rest and spend the night. In the morning, you can join in on the communal breakfast before returning through the portal to the Primary Settlement.

[ The prospects of desserts could very well have Hilda forgiving Claude for almost dropping her precious shoes earlier which is clear from the spark of interest in her eyes that is vaguely reminiscent of Lysiteha.

Short attention spans seem to be the theme of the night however because as Sylvain shifts, Hilda pulls herself up a little, pressing her hands into his chest in order to see what he’s doing. Unfortunately, short of absolutely choking Sylvain out with the crook of her arm, she can only see the tops of the flasks glinting in the moonlight. The sight of them are greeted with a fond laugh of appreciation, recognizing a similar set up from home.

As for the (well-deserved) exasperation that she and Claude are on the receiving end of — ]

Because I wasn’t hungry then obviously. [ There’s a dramatic sigh that heaves from her mouth as Hilda throws her head backwards. Her voice trembles as if on the verge of (crocodile) tears. ] Can we please stop for a snack, Sylvain? I’m going to waste away. Please? And look how sad Claude looks without his fruit.

[ From behind Sylvain’s head, Hilda shoots Claude a look that he’s probably familiar with. One that clearly signals that they’re about to tag team some poor, unsuspecting soul — or in this case, Sylvain to get what they want. ]

[ He might be overly focused on the shoes' well-being given that it's intricately tied to his own health and safety, but Claude's not about to let a chance to stop somewhere pass by without a (minor) fight, impressive wine smuggling happening since that's absolutely noted. In fact, there just might be a small speech ready in favor of stopping anyway - because of course there is, alcohol induced or not - about the merits of trying somewhere new and not letting a banquet stop them.

But then. Then he looks up in time to catch Hilda's look, that all too familiar signal, and then it's far too easy to shift gears. Maybe Sylvain sees it coming, maybe he doesn't, but Claude immediately schools his features into something between distress and woe because the travesty of having no fruit is very, very real and definitely wasn't just a passing whim. ]

Oh c'mon, we're not even back to the inn yet. This place is even closer!

[ And, with one quick maneuver to step right in front of Sylvain since he's not about to be ignored and for Hilda's full entertainment value here as Claude also leans in with grave concern and an expression rivaling a pleading one of her own - ]

You wouldn't let down Hilda like that, would you?
philancer: (015)

[personal profile] philancer 2023-05-06 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Whether Sylvain saw it coming or not, he can't say he's exactly surprised by it, either. ]

You two are a menace.

[ The words sighed in exasperation, they still manage to hold an inordinate amount of fondness as he shakes his head at them. but it's not like he was about to deny them. If Hilda started actually crying on his shoulder, he was fucked, even if he suspected they were both just playing him right now. ]

Fine. Is there somewhere we can stop on the way to the Inn, or are we going all the way back to the Feast?
theidlemaiden: (pic#16106062)

[personal profile] theidlemaiden 2023-05-06 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
A menace? Sylvain, you know I'm a delicate flower.

[ Hilda's voice begins to waver that much more, inching ever so closely towards the precipice of tears. ]

I'm just trying to make sure that Claude doesn't go hungry. You'd think that you'd be putting more effort into that all things considered. [ At the last bit she gives the crook of Sylvain's neck a gentle prod. ] If he wastes away how are you two going to do fun things together anymore?

[ 'Fun things' of course is just a thinly veiled allusion to them sleeping with one another but she's sure she doesn't have to explain that. Thankfully their tag team whinging seems to have worked. Hilda points towards the cafe Claude had pointed out moments before. Suddenly tears seem like a thing of the past as she gives Claude a triumphant grin, quickly jerking her head towards the brightly lit building as if telling Claude to start moving before Sylvain changed his mind. And to Sylvain - ]

There. That one. We can get something to go and then eat it on the way back to the inn. Onwards, valiant stead!

[ Hilda's wavering voice and pleas - something he's familiar with from listening to them many times - nearly get a grin from him now even after he'd narrowly resisted one at Sylvain's complaint that they're a menace as a set. Of course they are; it's a well-honed act they've used to level many an opponent. And while Sylvain isn't exactly in opponent territory, being a small obstacle to their plans certainly counts, doesn't it?

He's about to chime in just to double down on the 'shaming' of a lack of effort, but what Hilda says causes his expression to freeze on his face momentarily. The insinuation is loud and clear and there's something beneath it that feels important though alcohol pushes it out of his grasp. Or maybe he's reading too much into it also thanks to the alcohol, especially when Hilda grins his way and it's easy to flash the same grin right back.

And next, one clap of a hand on Sylvain's shoulder with a solemn look. Or what should be one if it wasn't for the grin threatening to take over it again, and then he steps back to lead the way to the cafe. ]

C'mon, valiant steed. Time to ferry our fair lady to our next destination. I'm sure we can find something for you in there too without having to go back to the feast, but I wouldn't say no if you'd rather show off your platter smuggling skills.
philancer: (066)

[personal profile] philancer 2023-05-08 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Sylvain is just rolling his eyes at the both of them, but he's had just enough alcohol to find this fairly hilarious instead. ]

You're both lucky I like you so much. [ He informs the pair of them as he turns towards the café Hilda is now pointing at over one of his shoulders, following Claude's lead as they cross the street. The place is brightly lit despite the hour, no doubt catching those wandering home from the feast in just this way.

He doesn't actually mind. He's not sure he's ready for tonight to end just yet.

Once inside, he lets Hilda slide down his back until she can stand on her own two feet, but he keeps his arms around her until he's sure she has her balance. Then he straightens up once more to survey their options in here. ]

Alright. So what do you guys want? Let's avoid platter smuggling unless absolutely necessary.
theidlemaiden: (pic#16095194)

[personal profile] theidlemaiden 2023-05-09 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Even if Sylvain didn't find it so funny, she would have crooned all the same. Her arms wrap around his neck, giving his cheek an indulgent kiss as he makes his way towards the café.

Although Sylvain doesn't voice his opinion, Hilda has similar sentiments. The night had been near perfect, and she could barely remember why she had left early in the first place. The moment of solitude had seemed needed but she realizes with the bubbly, happy glow of alcohol, that this is vastly preferred. Two gorgeous men, the prospect of pastries, and the likelihood of being carried to her soft bed? What had she been thinking leaving alone?

The cool tile underneath her feet would normally be cause for some whining (who knew what people were stepping in?) but there's a moment where it feels welcoming underneath her feet. Her toes wiggle happily before she loops her arm through Claude's, slotting into his side before she reaches for her shoes. ]

My shoes for one.

[ Using him as a bit of a stand, she slips the heels on again, humming in thought. ]

Something sweet. Like one of those strawberry filled croissants? Oo, or maybe two of them?
godshattering: (pic#16265572)

[personal profile] godshattering 2023-05-10 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, but in that case: we're making our own platter here.

[ That seems like a fair trade if Sylvain isn't going to humor them by demonstrating the smuggling beyond the wine. Tonight's already been a night of indulgence; what's adding a few more things to it like a cherry on top of the metaphorical sundae? Hilda leans against him to put her shoes back on after he hands them over, and Claude moves his arm in her grasp to wind it around her waist instead while peering into the nearest display case. Something sweet is what he already had in mind - not for him, but for both of them.

When the croissants are requested, he glances up to meet the gaze of one very patient looking cafe employee who has clearly been through this routine with many a drunk banquet patron this night. Or maybe every night. Either way, it takes only but a second for Claude to shift to an even more charming grin. ]

Two of the strawberry ones, please. Oh, and three of those?

[ Unsurprisingly, he's pointing at some round, flat pastry with a sizable amount of cheese filling in the center. The employee picks up a fancy box of some kind to start putting them into. That's a good start, and he continues eying their options before spotting something in particular. ]

Wait a minute. C'mere, Sylvain. [ Because this isn't chaotic enough, with his free hand he reaches out for the man in question without looking and when his fingers hook into his jacket, that's all Claude needs to tug him closer as if they aren't all looking at the same things. Closeness is obviously the better option for pointing to the lumpy turnover on the savory side of the options. ] Does that look like a meat pie to you?

[ Hold that thought, because now he's noticed the tea menu with a rose tea that demands being pointed out to Hilda immediately. ]

[ At least they're both easy to distract when tipsy. He'll take it.

He lets Hilda lean on Claude to fix her shoes, even as he peruses the display case and the board written on the wall behind it. He listens with half an ear as Claude starts rattling off an order for them and then he's unceremoniously yanked sideways, having him stumbling a little when Claude loops a finger into his jacket pocket.

Catching himself on the counter, he casts the other man a bemused look before shaking his head in amusement. ]

Add in two of those, would you? And an order of the rose tea. And one of the chamomile there too, please? [ He knows Hilda won't want any of the meat pies, but she'll likely enjoy the tea Claude found. And he's pretty sure he remembers Claude liking chamomile. Maybe it'll help him fall asleep tonight?

He glances over at the pair of them, arching an eyebrow. ]
Anything else, or will that be enough?

[ Hilda's gaze is all but affixed on the enticing displays of pastries. It's so late! Why are there still so many? She can't recall it now in this moment, but at some point tomorrow she'll remember that this is a 24 hour café. Where was one of these in Fodlan? She'd never have to fend for herself again in the middle of the night.

Sylvain is absolutely correct in knowing that she wants nothing to do with a meat pie at this hour. Those fruit tarts though... ]

Those two, please! [ She points to the last two sitting pretty in a cake stand and at this point she's eating with her eyes not her stomach. They aren't just fruit, but maybe Claude will take a chance on them. The café employee gives her what is more of a grimace but nods, before bustling off to collect their order leaving the trio to their own devices. And that's when another thought dawns on her, eyes going a little wide as she lowers her voice. ]

One of you brought some money, right? Because I didn't.

[ They've certainly piled up quite an order and yet he's still tempted to add more to it. He'd heard something about breakfast in the morning - it could've been written on their invitations - but if the night keeps stretching on like this, maybe they won't be awake for it. Himself included.

Hilda's question draws his attention away to look at her. Claude's not sure if she's kidding around again and if this should be a cue he's picking up on or not. But it sure seems like one, so even if there's a coin purse with the remnants of their provided allowance tucked away in one of his pockets for safekeeping since producing it isn't nearly as fun as playing along. ]

Er, no. I didn't either.

[ This is an outright lie doubled down upon by the look of Great Concern he puts on his face like they're headed for impending disaster here. Surprisingly, and despite being tipsy he doesn't break out into laughter to give anything away. That means turning this expression onto Sylvain like he's about to be their knight in shining armor. ]

What do we do now?
philancer: (020)

[personal profile] philancer 2023-05-11 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
[ Goddess save him from these two. What cruel twist of irony brought about the fact that he's somehow becoming the most responsible one among them? The Goddess is clearly laughing him, that's what this has to be. This is what he gets for calling the Fates a bitch.

He doesn't bother to answer them, just pulls out his changepurse from within his jacket pocket and ignores the sympathetic expression he gets from the server behind the counter, because really, that's not helpful in the least. He's definitely in a way worse position right now, because he's pretty sure Hilda will spot at least three more things she'll want before they leave.

No, wait, he absolutely deserves that pity. ]

I've got it, no worries. But I'm cutting you both off there, because I think that's all I can afford at the moment. [ Maybe that will help? He can hope.

Although he eyes the box for a moment, and then what he has on him before shaking his head. ]
On second thought, can we cancel the meat pies? [ He turns to cast Claude a crooked smile, hoping he can talk him into giving up one of the treats. At least he should still get to enjoy the sweet ones, right? ] They would probably clash with the sweets anyway, and the sweet ones will go better with your tea.

[ He doesn't bring up that he prefers savory to sweet, in this case, but that's okay, he's not the one that was wasting away to nothing from starvation here, apparently. ]

[personal profile] theidlemaiden 2023-05-12 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Hilda definitely isn't trying to force Sylvain's hand in paying for this. It's clear from her dress and the way it hugs her is that there's no room for hidden pockets, even for coins. There's a moment where she foresees them dashing out of there with the food - before slapping that idea down because even this tipsy version of her brain knows how awful that would be.

But she was also really looking forward to eating that croissant. Adoration towards Sylvain's very heroic statement suddenly turns to panic. ]

No, no!

[ Her eyes go wide and her hand quickly darts out towards the employee who's already reaching into the box to return the meat pies back into the case. Their own eyes meet Hilda's and they seem to visibly gulp, the meat pie hovering in their tongs as her eyes dart back to Sylvain. ]

Then what are you going to eat? You can't just pay for everything and not have something. Then Claude and I are going to be eating alone and that's not the point of this.

[ Her eyes return to the employee, suddenly looking incredibly fierce. ] You can put the fruit tarts back and keep the meat pies. [ She seems to realize a beat later that the request had come out angrier than she had intended. A sugary sweet smile complete with fluttering eyelashes dissolves the expression in an instant. ]

Please. [ The employee tries to smile - but it comes across as a grimace before nodding and doing as they're asked. ] I know you two won't eat those anyway.

[personal profile] godshattering 2023-05-13 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Oh - so it wasn't a ploy. This dawns on Claude slowly and then all at once with Sylvain's smile of apology and then Hilda's concern he recognizes as very real and not one of their shared tactics. Clearly she really doesn't have any money with her, and tempting as it might be to let Sylvain pay he's also not about to take what seems like the last of the other's money if he can avoid it.

Well. He certainly read that incorrectly. Time to fix it. ]

Hold on a minute, please. [ The employee pauses and gives him a Look which has him putting his best smile on for interrupting yet again. At least they'll probably leave after this? ] Go ahead and keep everything in there we ordered. It can stay.

[ Time to withdraw his coin purse after all and a bit sheepishly, much as he can manage. There's a tip jar on the counter he'd missed before in the excitement of ordering, so the first order of operations is to drop a good handful of coins in there. If not because of their (his) behavior, then because there's surely about to be other tipsy patrons wandering through yet tonight. In retrospect, he probably should've started with this, but next he gets to counting out what's needed to pay. ]

We'll take everything and be on our way. All the better to make sure everyone gets to enjoy something when we get back to the inn, right?

[ The two of them getting something they actually want out of this is more important as far as he's concerned. Sylvain doesn't have to sit there with tea only for lack of having anything else, and Hilda gets the sweets she'd wanted in the first place by stopping here. ]

[ Sylvain blinks when Claude suddenly pulls out a coinpurse from his pocket and pauses a moment to roll his eyes heavenward in fond exasperation, because of course it had been a play on his behalf. Although he thinks Hilda, at least, was genuine in her concern over it all.

He pats her lightly on the head, being careful not to muss her hair in the process. ]
There, is that better, Princess? Now everyone can have a treat.

[ He mouths a thank you to Claude over her head, because he hadn't wanted to disappoint either of them, but he hadn't also planned on splurging on midnight snacks on the way back from the feast, so he hadn't had a lot left on him after their day of shopping. ]
theidlemaiden: (pic#16094983)

[personal profile] theidlemaiden 2023-05-15 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Not all of their ploys could be perfectly executed but at least they had caught it before it had gone too far and thank god two out of the three of them had brought actual money. A bright grin splits across her face, pleased that everyone would get something now. She doesn't even seem to mind the head pat even though she'd have swatted it away normally.

There's a rational part of her brain that will reflect on this tomorrow, feel some level of embarrassment, and vow to find a way to repay them somehow. But tonight she can only gush to herself that she's so incredibly lucky to have them both to look after her along with this 24 hour café that she'd definitely be returning to, cash in hand.

Happily she takes their (paid) pastries before slotting herself between the pair of them as they continue their short journey back to the inn. ]

Both of you will actually eat them, right? You're not just going to leave me to have everything?

[ The effects of the alcohol loosen her lips slightly, airing more of her concerns than she might otherwise do during the day. All of it, of course, is said with her usual light cadence as if she's still trying to appear like everything is Fine, and the real problem is that she'll be eating alone. But the whine betrays a worry, however slight. ]

I've been worried about you two. You're both hardly sleeping and barely at the inn which is fine because Petra and Marianne are there, but I'm really starting to feel like a worrying mother or something.
godshattering: (pic#16265574)

No, these are all just for you. [ To Hilda with a very Serious look - or what would be if it wasn't for mirth threatening to filter through it at any moment since it's too easy to tease her, and for good measure he reaches out to tap the pastry box with one finger. ] The theme of the night's spoiling or being spoiled, isn't it? These definitely count.

[ That's just completely ignoring what he'd added to the order for himself, that he knows Hilda's tastes, and the grin on his face appearing nearly in the same instant the words are out of his mouth. What he's not expecting, however, is for Hilda's concern over pastry consumption to morph into something else. Something he thinks he should've seen coming as an inevitable topic - even if now wasn't the precise moment he would've guessed it would come up. ]

There's just a lot to catch up on around town, that's all. Cadens really had to go and change on us while we were gone.

[ As if they were on some sort of vacation rather than abducted, and something he'd rather not dwell on if the smile appearing on his face by reflex is any indication to make this all seem very normal. It feels far easier to keep the light mood they've had; why not keep it that way? In Claude's logic, anyway, and he's going to look to Sylvain and shrug before scanning the signs for different shops they're passing by now. ]

All that roaming means I've found some cafes we'll have to check out together - all of us - when we're back from the gala. We could even make late night trips out like this a habit.
philancer: (040)

[ The gesture of twining an arm about her waist as she tucks herself in between them once more on the way out of the cafe feels natural and easy, even as he balances the carafe of hot tea in his other hand.

Her concerns get an exchanged glance with Claude over her head, however, because he knows they're both definitely guilty of this - especially in the aftermath of their captivity. Hilda's already caught him up on the roof late at night at least once now, and he has no idea how many times she might have noticed Claude was missing.

So he lets Claude give his answer before bending his head and brushing a light kiss atop her hair. ]
Sorry if we've worried you, Princess. We're getting there, I promise. And we didn't mean to make you feel neglected in the process.

[ Not an excuse, on his part. He knows he doesn't have one. The fact that he's not coping well with all that had happened in the pit - and all the old memories it had dragged once more to the surface - is hardly a secret, he thinks. But that didn't mean he wanted to worry her, either. ]
theidlemaiden: (pic#16098237)

[personal profile] theidlemaiden 2023-05-17 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
[ When she's flanked between them like this with the warmth and security that they provide, it's difficult for her to remember why she's voicing these worries in the first place. It's like the nights since their return where she's woken up to check for signs that they've returned had never happened.

Surely this easiness has always been here and her insecurities were a byproduct of the stress and lack of sleep they had endured over the last several weeks, right? It can't be indicative of anything else because that would be ridiculous. She hmphs in an attempt to lighten the mood. ]

Who said I was feeling neglected? I have Petra and Marianne. Not to mention Sylvain and Claude Junior. They actually listen to me when I call.

[ The lightness is an attempt to combat the rising guilt caused by the realization that she's being selfish. There's no other word to describe her unspoken demand that they cope in a way that makes sense to her brain.

It's easier to deflect that with the thought of nights out like this, together, arm in arm, where they can be silly warms her heart. Appeases the spoiled part of her in some way. Simply put, they (Claude, Petra, Sylvain, Marianne) can do what they'd like, she just doesn't want to be forgotten in the process. Her eyes sparkle, like all really is forgiven. Or it will be soon. ]

But if you're both sorry, you can both make it up to me now by carrying me up the stairs later when we get to the inn. And by both, I mean Claude. Sylvain already carried me here.

[ They aren't the only ones good at deflecting. ]

[ At Hilda's protest she's not feeling neglected Claude arches an eyebrow briefly since it sounded that way to him too, but then that eyebrow's replaced with both raised openly when the lizards are mentioned again. ]

Are you... saying the lizards respond to their names? That's quite a feat.

[ Not something he would've associated with lizards either, honestly, but then again: the lizards he knew before these appeared as their newest housemates weren't exactly part machinery either. Tempting as it is to get lost in pondering lizard abilities - and how that compares to the Leosylphs who don't seem to know the names he'd given them while they're guests - but it's interrupted by a very Hilda suggestion he should've seen coming. ]

And wait a minute. Sylvain gets to carry you through the streets but I get to carry you up the stairs? That's very generous of you, Hilda.

[ There's an attempt to make that sound dry and deeply unimpressed, but it's somewhat ruined by the fondness seeping into his voice. It's perfect for wiping away any shadows brought on by the mention of not being around, and not unlike nights where they'd needed to slip back inside after visiting a tavern before Seteth caught them. Stairs were involved then too thanks to the dormitories (and all the others around the monastery) so it's a pleasant memory and one he doesn't mind doing now either even if he's going to use it as a teasing complaint first.

That's also complete with sending Sylvain a very Serious look like something of great importance is about to be bestowed upon the other man. ]

This means you're in charge of the pastry box. Don't drop it or I think you and I will both be sleeping out in the hallway then.

[ Considering the inn is looming up ahead of them, Sylvain gives Claude a playful salute and reaches out to pluck the pastry box from Hilda's hands, carrying it with the same care and reverence that Claude had earlier dealt her shoes. ]

I will protect them with my life. But I think we should be giving you that warning. [ He smirks before leaning over Hilda's head to give Claude an exaggerated whisper from behind his hand, knowing full well she'd be able to hear every word. ] Don't drop Hilda or we may have to flee to Solvunn.
theidlemaiden: (pic#16095029)

[personal profile] theidlemaiden 2023-05-18 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Hilda can't necessarily confirm that the lizards respond to their names, but most of the time when she does call them, they respond by turning their gaze towards her. She has yet to try calling them from across the room but surely they would. It's not an exact science and more a feeling – which is sure to have Viktor rolling his eyes if he ever heard it. She'd let Claude live in suspense.

Sylvain's stage whisper earns a furrowed brow and offended gasp as she hits him in the stomach lightly with the back of her hand. ]

I wouldn't send you all the way to Solvunn. Maybe just the floor of the inn.

[ She shoots a look back towards Claude as she hands the box of pastries over to Sylvain. A grin has dissolved any semblance of her apparent offence. ]

All those years of carrying me up the stairs of the dorms is about to come in handy.
godshattering: (pic#15529809)

[personal profile] godshattering 2023-05-19 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
The floor. Oh man, Gautier. We're really in for it now.

[ There's a gasp preceding this dramatic proclamation as if Hilda's said she's going to make them sleep out in the desert or something that would be actually befitting such a reaction. ]

That's even worse than the hallway! Especially when you think about a nice bed being right there and in plain sight when it's so close and yet so far. That's just cruel.

[ And other such silly protests, all one thousand percent undermined into being something meaningless given that Claude's already kneeling down in anticipation of Hilda hopping on. If there's people behind them he hasn't noticed (and there are, given the parade) they'll just have to go around since he's getting a head start on carrying her. ]

Sylvain's got more pressure on him anyway with holding onto our snacks. What's the plan if he drops them or the tea or both, we send him back to that cafe to replace everything?

[ He's just going to keep the side whispering going and now talk about Sylvain like the man isn't standing there. ]
philancer: (001)

[personal profile] philancer 2023-05-19 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Just for that, I should eat all of them and not let you have any.

[ Sylvain gives a disdainful sniff, as he's being so horrendously slandered right now. But he does shift to stand behind Hilda just so he can divert anyone around her and a crouching Claude, as well as making space for them on what had been his side of the sidewalk.

For all that he's nearly as tipsy as both of them, he at least has managed to keep a rather firm hold on their late night bounty. But his hands are full now, so he has to hope Claude can handle Hilda on his own well enough. ]

Besides. I'm not sure that cafe will ever want to see us ever again.
theidlemaiden: (pic#16006945)

[personal profile] theidlemaiden 2023-05-19 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
We'll have to see what's salvageable or not. All the more reason not to drop them or me then. Or eat them in retaliation.

[ As Sylvain slips behind her, Hilda shoots him a warning look in passing. She doesn't have that short term of a memory where she's forgotten that he's the one who paid for half of the pastries in the first place, but they're still her pastries in her mind.

She shimmies her dress a little further up her hips again before climbing onto Claude's back. It's not completely inelegant, but it definitely doesn't look as graceful as she might think it does in her mind. Her arms slip loosely around his neck as she continues to prattle on. ]

Why not? We tipped them really well, didn't we? [ And then to Claude - ] Okay, I'm on. Don't fall over, please.
