I don't trust, but I see right in front of me
Who: Lucifer, others
When: May & June
Where: Thorne, Nott, Nocwich, the Horizon
What: OTA prompts and some closed things
Warnings:
Nocwich with Castiel: Cyfaill-induced Problems.
Nocwich with Istredd: A Lot of Blood, animal death, part harvesting, ???? it's a weird thread
I don't know who to betray. ♫

Istredd / Nocwich / early June
At least because of the downed trees, Lucifer isn't associating the smell of burning wafting into the area with Dean, so y'know, big nasty boar? Waaaaay better for their odds.
(Lucifer's starting to think the cats have gotten wise and have taken to avoiding him. Word of mouth? Screeching yowling of mouth? His usual brand of prey has moved away from his familiar hunting territory in the woods and the herds have shifted over the last month.)
Lucifer sweeps his spear in an arc, and after the initial alarm of the boar's presence, Lucifer's pleasure in the hunt takes over.
I don't fight these very often, so this'll be fun. He trusts Istredd's touted capabilities that he can leave the mage's side and curve around the boar, hoping to keep speed to avoid being charged at. I wanna see what you can do.

So this is forcing him far past his comfort zone, the intentional absence of light. There wasn't the money for eye drops to see in the dark, but he didn't need them anyway. He isn't without his magic here, if anything, it is burning stronger than ever inside of him as the adrenaline surges. A spell for seeing in the dark is easy enough. Slowing the fear is a different thing, but best not to shine a metaphoric light on that feeling, it is something Istredd will have to push through on his own.
The arrows held against his back are more useful to him with telekinesis than attempting to put them through a bow first, so he didn't bother with a bow at all. Istredd gives him a look when he rushes off. No pressure. Yet his fear has nothing to do with facing down this creature. It stares at him and he stares back.
Istredd goes down on a knee and that is when it starts to charge due to the movement, and he seems to have no intention of moving as it closes in fast. A hand placed into the ground moves up in front of him and the earth shifts with him, causing a bridge of pure grass, dirt, and wood as a temporary shield so the Torcainse ends up running up over him. It is confused and unable to stop so crashes over when he stops building, tumbling briefly back down.
Once that happens, the bridge begins to grow again into a winding branch of a kind that is easy for Istredd to climb as more of a slant upward than actually needing to worry about scaling a tree. As the creature gets up, annoyed rather than hurt, he is high above and slips a hand through a few of the arrows, pulling them. He flings them the way someone might knives, but they move with his hands instead, telekinesis causing them to not aim for its obvious tough snout and bones but sweep down to the sides and jab inward, cutting the hide in places it doesn't expect.
It squeals from unexpected pain and an attack it can't actually see, swerving in circles trying to find something to stab with its horn, but there is no one there.

But there is something appealing about simply sitting back and watching Istredd able to have the full stretch and space to go at a target, differently than when Lucifer's leaned away and watched others on these grounds. That is usually in mockery, or an actual test, but still mockery.
This he's been waiting, nearly hungering to witness. No magic demonstration is ever going to come close to the flow of battle.
... although it could be a good show. Put him and Natasha against Istredd's magic, combat versus illusion and some explosive fun? Give the newbies a little taste?
Ah, dreams.
He avoided the last Thorne welcoming, but maybe next time. Because he has enough certainty in that. That there will be a next time, regardless what any of them want.
He lets out a sharp whistle, gaining the creature's attention to give it something concrete to stab those horns. Instead, he's furthering its annoyance at their confusing presences, and flits around as it moves, hitting empty air as Lucifer reappears right against its flank, heel of the weapon digging in and laying the full shaft into its fur. Seconds later the speartip threads into flesh as Lucifer pushes, inhuman strength keeping himself braced. It thrashes, pushes, trying to dislodge him like he's an annoying bug sunk in, skidding Lucifer's stance around but only serving to dig in further.
Lucifer has learned by now to rely on his physical prowess. No showy powers. No more than his natural strength.
And he is very good at temporarily grounding a target for a second fighter (as annoying as Hilda was). It'll figure out how it has to move to pull itself free from Lucifer shortly. They're not that dumb for animals.

Training isn't the same thing as doing. In all ways, he is a lethal machine, yet one that hasn't had the trigger pulled. Fire is not encouraged in here but he doesn't need it, the ground perch he made for himself simply going back down where it belongs but it moves onto the Torcainse where it is thrashing.
Tendrils of dirt and grass curl onto it and hold it down too, tying it up in the very earth it treads on until there is truly no escape even if it got free of Lucifer's spear. There is a flash of light on the end of one of his free arrows as he does burn it to make this part easier for the beast. He doesn't want to torture it. It's still struggling up until the point he sinks the arrow underneath it, straight into its heart under the softer protected parts of flesh in one sharp movement.
It may be a flash of movement or his own instincts, considering his mind and mental magic is open right then, but it's not even a split second before a shield wraps itself around the two of them. Lucifer knows from experience that Istredd barely has to be aware for his barriers to snap up around them, as shown when he shattered all the glass. The shield is invisible outside of a ripple of illusion and also because a second torcainse came looking, possibly hearing the squeal of the other, and started moving toward Lucifer's back.
It bounces harmlessly off the shield when it tries to charge, getting steadily angry considering it can see them clearly through it and keeps trying. Istredd raises eyebrows at him.
Do they move in groups?
no subject
Lucifer's sure he'd hear if that many were on the approach, anyway.
Not always, he says instead. I don't think they're completely solitary but we shouldn't expect a herd like you would the fisceime.
His hand itches to reclaim his spear but he's stuck with a wild fascination with the angry boar trying to get to them through the shielding.
Lower the shield when it rears back. I can hold it. Steps ahead, knowing it'll get him a snout right smack in his face to grab the jutting horns on either side of the nose, but holding steady so that he nor Istredd can be gored by the outer tusks. Will it be a force of willpower? Maybe. But he has the time to brace himself and a small trickle of power churning through him.
no subject
It's a credit to his absolute trust in Lucifer that he doesn't question whether that's a good idea. He does what he asks, lowering the shield at the precise moment he asked for, and Istredd reaches over to pull up Lucifer's spear from the dead one. He's been training with Lucifer since early on so he is generally at ease holding a weapon, even if it is not his go-to instinct.
Do you plan on having a wrestling match with it?
no subject
He gives the answer to Istredd's question by grabbing for the boar at the tusks he expecting (equally just as expected: the abhorrent breath, hhrg), a true contest display when Lucifer stands his ground against the massive bulking creature.
He doesn't get to show very often just how much more he really is beneath this vessel, and he holds strong, making to force the head away from Istredd's path, controlling the struggling movements as it tries to drag free and churn legs through the ground but Lucifer is just laughing.
What?
He did admit to wanting to show off.
no subject
Istredd steps to the side, crossing his arms while holding the spear in one hand, watching since Lucifer's doing it on purpose. He's smiling both because it's amusing and also because it's hot. Lucifer wants to impress Istredd, he wants to show off for his attention, and that is very appealing. So he'll give him all of it. The way he's looking at him is in no way subtle, blue eyes vibrant even in the dark.
You're right. He says, flirting. You are a thirst trap. See, he did ask.
no subject
Who'd you ask? Because he really, really wants to know.
no subject
Very rude to have me ask someone else so she knows I'm apparently thirsty. It's not a term that he would have really understood on his own. It was frustrating because he felt he could get it through context, but it just didn't sync up in his head.
no subject
See, his rudeness comes with perks??
He suddenly puts all his force into slamming the nose of the boar into the ground, grinding the tusks deep into earth, and the partially leaping back, partially catching himself with his wings, to land at Istredd's side.
Optimistic of you that she didn't know before. If anyone was going to suss it out, I'd bet on her. You could've just asked offhand with no explanation. But likely even offhand Istredd would've gotten flustered and revealed himself too clearly.
no subject
You are very strong. Without magic, I wouldn't be able to hold it for a second. And Istredd is not weak in body, Lucifer's obviously supernaturally strong. He smiles at him.
no subject
He walks slowly to the boar, watching it, observing.
"You should learn, without magic," Lucifer tosses over his shoulder. I like seeing you at your best. But training with me isn't the same as going toe to toe with beasts. He slips around the struggling creature and ducks in close, sinking a hand into fur and clawing fingers in. There's a searing power to his palm, eating through flesh to nerves, to the mind. Is it mercy? Probably not.
He wobbles back just a bit.
He wanted to know if he could do it.
Answer: sort of.
"Your little wizard school teach you how to skin an animal?"
no subject
"I could probably do better than a few animals. I know magic that would snap dozens of necks with one flick of my hand, easy. But ...." Istredd sighs, folding his arms against his chest, looking at the dead beast. "I've never had to kill anyone. I was always sheltered in my tombs and books."
It's more about potential than practice. Istredd's been trained to kill, there should be no doubt about that considering how at ease he just was in it. It's easy to imagine how it would be if he wanted to, and maybe that's why he is so hesitant. Even in the Pit he was more focused on keeping the peace and finding a way out. He never really tried to fight the acolytes or suggested they push it. He didn't let out the shrine monster. Istredd doesn't know if he has it in him, so far he's proven he doesn't.
Istredd raises an eyebrow at him. "If I say no are you going to make me?" They teach them to kill and seduce and control. Squeamish 'servant' things not so much.
cw: skinning animals, through unorthodox methods
... Yet.
It might come to that, one day. To protect 'their people' Istredd may not be able to hide in the library forever.
He retrieves his spear. Istredd is Going Through Something with whatever Sodden was and Lucifer is going through it like they've just had a stroll through a park, already getting fast to work with the boar, a quick flight to its back. The spear is... not going to help him much. Incisions. A lot of this has to be done by hand, tearing at flesh like paper. Given that Lucifer likes the warmth and feeling of blood--something that Istredd will have the unfortunate luck of realizing, what with their connected minds--it's good for him. Usually he's working on smaller animals.
"What, make you kill or make you help me with this?" He's mostly sure he knows what Istredd is asking, but given the conversation, he says it, anyway, just because. He couldn't exactly make Istredd kill anyway. Not... really. Not conventionally.
He probably could find a way to, but that would likely end their relationship, and friendship, and all of it.
"It would go faster if you helped me," Lucifer says, already dug in, "and if you want to buy me a drink we need something to sell." He wouldn't need to take everything from this beast, and he's not someone who's been taught to use all the parts of a kill--nor would he have the means to transport all the parts. Something will scavenge the rest though, he knows that.
"But if you're not going to help I need you to keep your eyes peeled. Something might come scouting at the smell of blood. Snap some Ceknias necks." Though they're more likely to lure you out than wander. Basically if you hear anything like a human cry in these woods, it's something that wants to kill you.
Nocwich beasts are weird.

Sodden is twisted up in Yennefer feelings and that probably has a very particular brand of emotion that Lucifer can pinpoint now they've been doing this for a while. Feelings for her always end up wrapped up in guilt and regret, no matter how much better they are now. His love for Lucifer has a sort of new purity compared to that long-term complexity.
"You're doing fine without me, I'd probably slow you down." Istredd may be a little squeamish. He isn't really disturbed with how Lucifer's tearing through it, it's not something he'd be able to do himself. He doesn't watch because of it though. He takes a deep breath in and lets it out, pushing away at the corners of his mind that say mean-spirited things at him. It's getting easier, pushing back at his own issues.
"You look beautiful as a hunter. One of those feline moments." Istredd likes when Lucifer is feline, probably his favorite mood. "If we wanted to we could probably empty this forest."
no subject
Idiot would see it as worth it, Lucifer knows.
"And then Nocwich would never let us back if we killed all their game, and that'd be a damn shame. This is the one place in 'reality' I feel like I can breathe."
no subject
Of course it would be worth it. Losing Lucifer's love, agonizing, losing Lucifer, devastating.
"Is it the wide open spaces? Beautiful setting?" Like Lucifer's Horizon domain, he means. Since he said it was the only place in reality, and Lucifer's landscapes are extremely detailed.
no subject
Istredd too much thinking, Lucifer not enough.
"I am who I am already. You might not like yourself."
Slice, slide of the blade, pull. He might have to ditch another outfit. This is more blood than he's used to being saturated in.
"The space. Open, can't see the walls, can't feel the walls. I could do without the darkness, but here, hunting, it's less a weight than the rest of what we've seen of Nocwich."
no subject
no subject
"It hadn't been on purpose. Mostly," he admits. A very different brand of 'accident' than the fisherman had been. That hadn't been his direct fault. The interrogation though... "It'd gotten out of hand."
He wasn't even sure when the guards pulled the guy out if he was dead or not, but he knows better after the dust settled. "A prisoner Natasha and I were interrogating." When Istredd and the others were taken. Istredd doesn't know about the torture part of Lucifer's work during that. Few people likely did, though they maybe could connect the dots, like Lenore had.
"I didn't make the same mistake twice." And even let the guy walk after he got them to the trade route they wanted. It's anyone's guess how helpful the information ended up being. It didn't get them to the island, it just gave them more unknowns to be mad at.
no subject
"I wish you wouldn't keep these things from me," he says finally. "I think I understand why, and I'm not going to press, but I like being in the loop with you." A simple stated explanation and he may have done the same if the positions were switched. He already said he'd kill for Lucifer. It would be hypocritical to have a problem with it now.
"I would touch you or squeeze your hand, but I think if I get too much of that on me I'll be sick." See, good thing he didn't offer to help with it! He knows his limitations as frustrating as they are.
no subject
Istredd doesn't get why.
"Because weeks after things finally, desperately trying to get back to 'normal' in the castle seemed like a great time to mention how I got tossed and locked in the dungeons for a day because I went for Ambrose!"
He looks up from his work, missing a cut and damaging the hide, but this isn't some poaching trade that needs their merchandise to be pristine, so it doesn't matter.
"Maybe I just want us to have some peace!"
no subject
"Even before this became a relationship, we were friends. Neither of us is good at letting other people shoulder our weight, we try to hold it in. Me because no one's ever cared, you because everyone you loved abandoned you." If Istredd thinks too much about the cage he gets furious so he's trying to bypass that thought and focus on what he wants to say. He knows it's important that Lucifer understands this is a mutual problem.
"I was in a shitty space and you have been taking care of me at every turn. You ended up in a cage again because of this." That's a prison cell. Lucifer lost control and ended up there, and started a bad relationship with Ambrose. He's been looking after Istredd since he got back, hovering, worried. Istredd's noticed and it's helped him, but what about Lucifer? What will help him?
"You're not a burden. You're my partner. I'm always in your corner. I'm not going to push you to share, I just am saying it and hoping you'll think about it."
no subject
So.
That's fine.
Expected, really.
He also tries to keep the fur pressed to the body though instead of hanging down so that Istredd can't see all the mess on the other side as Lucifer continues to work. Which means he isn't trying to push Istredd away.
Lucifer's been 'pretty good' at this relationship thing but here's the clarity now where he isn't. The actual 'partner' part of the partnership. He relies on Istredd, sure, more than he relies on anyone, but he's a solo person by nature of his life. Because as Istredd's said, everyone else has always abandoned him.
Keep it all in, that's the way of life.
But he's fine. He doesn't need help.
Even if the words 'you're not a burden' sink a little heavy in him.
"I'll keep that in mind," he says. While he'd prefer outright silence he knows he should scribble in an answer.
