Something harder. If there's a lot of it in a night cheap makes it easier.

( had as a medical student anyway. but even later when she was in her roughest patch no one needed that bill on top of being drunk )

And I got used to it. 'Nice' loses something and makes me feel like I should be dressed up and drinking slow at some event.

I did something harder on occasion but it tended to make me feel like crap the next day.

I'm not great at hangovers and when you can't see, it makes it even worse. The headaches and the stomachaches just feel more intense. Cheap beer tends to keep them mild and doesn't kill my bank account.

What's a hangover?

( very much joking. she's just gotten used to pulling herself through how her head feels rather than feeling sorry for herself )

But you've got a pretty good reason to keep it milder. And you're in luck that I'm in the mood to try something new anyway. A drink and not drunk.

( sure, it's not the best superpower but damn, it would have been handy especially in law school. he laughs, shaking his head. is it the kind of ability that abraxas gives out?

So other than recommended questionable beer... what do you do here?

( he can hear the slide of that coin so he smiles. )

Here? I work in a solictor's office as an assistant, basically. Had to start all over with law and such since I'm not licensed. It pays well enough but...it's grunt work.

Yeah, I'm getting the idea that we all have to start over.

( which was sounding familiar from the small enquiries she'd made about medicine and practicing here )

Which would probably be great if I wanted to try something new but... I'm kind of set.

Yeah, I was the same way.

( he could have tried something else but he hadn't really wanted to. law was his life and it was something he was good at. )

Have you looked into anything in the medical field here?

Tried, got rejected.

( not quite but she is figuring out the starting over thing and maybe trying to see how she can jump some steps based on the skills she already has )

I'm trying to find other clinics or something I can get my hands into as a starting point? A few steps down to at least help until I can actually really work.

Doesn't surprise me, unfortunately.

( he'd had a few of those rejections himself. )

I don't have a license here so I asked about the process to get one but it takes awhile. So, I'm at least trying to work in the field. It's not great. I did some legal work when there was a bombing in Libertas but I don't wish that to happen again so I can get work.

Same with "I'm not hoping for injuries to work". I helped at the barracks with the soldiers when I first arrived but they kind of want me to sign up.

( and she's not a military doctor in the slightest. military kid but no chance of signing up )

What kind of law did you used to do? Maybe there's something in a different area that you could dip into for work temporarily?

Criminal. But, there's not a huge amount of crime here, oddly enough.

( the military seemed to run this place and a lot of people didn't want to cross them so they stayed in their lanes. cadens was more on the side of civil law. )

So, I do some civil law work, contract law, that sort of thing. I dip into that because I don't really have the skills to start all over.

I'd ask what you'd want to do otherwise but... that could be a whole long thing.

You could find new hobbies maybe? Keep you busy while you figure it out.

That's definitely something I've been trying to do but —

( well, he had his nighttime hobby but other than that, he was kind of stuck. )

A lot of hobbies require sight and that's one thing I don't have. I've been trying to translate things to braille when I can so I can keep up.

That sounds like a long job.

( and probably one that could be a solo job depending on how many people here either knew braille or were blind. she had sympathies )

I wish I had a hobby I could suggest. I don't even really have any myself. So... guess I should probably find something too.

What kinds of things did you before this place?

Anything you spent time doing when you weren't working?

I've been out of touch with my hobbies for a while.

( the good ones anyway. it's been a few years )

But hiking, a good book... I had a couple of things I studied. Which I guess any of that I could do. Depending on what the trails or books are like.

I've got some books that I could let you borrow though my taste tends to run in the legal arena. Some fiction, some non fiction.

( but hey, he was willing to share. )

Hiking might be a little harder in Cadens. You might have better luck in some of the other cities. Cadens is more concrete jungles and all. Good for walking, not good for strapping your hiking boots on to climb mountains.

I'll take a crime book every so often.

( with a shrug that he won't see, another sip of her drink )

And I enjoy walking even if it's not hiking. Though... ( a pause, a thought ) if you wanted any help with your translation I could offer moral support? I don't know Braille but I can bring coffee and company.

I could always use company and coffee.

( because he tended to spend lengthy periods of time doing these translations and sometimes, he just forgot how late it was getting. coffee would just let him keep working.

and company might stop him from burning the midnight oil too much. )

Not many people know braille so don't worry about that. I've taught a few people the basics but I've adapted to having to go at it alone.

( she brightens a little at that which he'll hear in her voice at least )

Then you will get it. And if you ever felt like showing me the basics I would absolutely agree. We can see if anything my mom taught me stuck.

She was a translator. Not in braille just... coffee and company sounds good.

( and work up to tbe braille. it wasn't the easiest thing to learn as an adult but he'd had some success with wanda so he thinks he could teach adrienne as well. )

But I've written up a few things that Wanda's studied that I'll give to you, see if it helps get you started.

I'm still living at the inn. Haven't been able to save enough to move out but it's comfortable enough.

What's the inn like? Living-wise.

I started staying at the barracks while I was helping there but I'm starting to think I need to find somewhere else. They... keep hinting about me signing up.
