EVENT #16: WINTERTIDE - IC EVENT LOG

Event #16 - Wintertide

Previous years have seen political complications arrive during the winter holidays. Luckily, this year appears to be a simpler affair...as much as that's possible for one of the Summoned. Although there are no diplomatic events, the status of the Summoned has grown over the past three years - and that means locals pay particular attention to you during important celebrations, especially if you've earned yourself some Influence.

Festivities start to pick up on DECEMBER 14 and continue until they reach their peak on DECEMBER 21, which coincides with a phenomenon known as The Dimming. During this period, the Singularity goes dormant and magic wanes. Celebrations continue in the following days until the Singularity gains its full strength.

For the island investigation taking place on December 29, click HERE.

NOTE: The island investigation log includes a DECISION for all characters who participated in Event #12 regardless of if they've returned to the island. Please read this section even if your character isn't participating in the excursion.
Local Festivities
Customs vary between nations, but no matter where you reside, you'll be encouraged to play a role. You're not limited to what the locals are doing, either! If there are any traditions from your home world you miss or want to share with your friends, you're welcome to do so. Teach each other songs from home, make your best approximation of a classic holiday dessert, or if the spirit of generosity compels you, you can even donate gifts and food to the less fortunate.

Player-organized open events are described HERE. Take a look if you'd like to attend or contribute to any of the available plots.
Thorne: The Dimming
Throughout the Kingdom of Thorne, the Dimming begins. Held in harmony with the annual cycle of the seasons and the slide of the Singularity into temporary dormancy, the Dimming is a celebration of two halves. The mood is generally somber and reflective in the days leading to the winter solstice itself, with the promise of a fantastic explosion of life, light and renewal waiting on the other side.
General Activities
◎ Around the city of CASTLE THORNE, horse-drawn sleigh rides take you through a picturesque route of freshly fallen snow and breathtaking mountain views while you enjoy some mulled wine. Rides are free for the Summoned. Many will try to entice you into their carriage. It's good for business to have given one of you a ride! As you go about town, you might attract notice. If you're lower on the Influence scale, you have a chance of going unbothered. If you're at 4 or higher, you're unlikely to escape attention. People will buy you a drink, ask you about life in the castle, or want to see you demonstrate your magic while theirs has waned.

◎ In BORREL, the Winding of the Thread involves a single cord wound throughout the city. Hopeful residents write wishes on colorful ribbons, then hang them on the cord. While large wishes are often only symbolically taken, smaller wishes, such as a new scarf or a friend to have tea with, can be granted by generous souls. And who might that generous soul be? Why, you! If you're so inclined, you can take a ribbon as a promise to fulfill that wish. You can put up a wish of your own, too, of course. Maybe a fellow Summoned will answer it?

◎ In NOTT, one of the frozen ponds has been smoothed over for locals to go skating while other ponds are open for ice fishing. When you're ready to take a break, you can enjoy hot drinks, crisp ales, and Nott's famous fish pies. Merchants are busy during this time, so if you need a little money, most will pay you to run an errand, help stock their shops, or mind the kids for a couple of hours. Residents in Nott are especially happy to meet you after all you've done.

Awakening of Magicks
Castle Thorne | Dec. 21
The burden whereby a Thornean mage sacrificed their life to offer a magical casket to the Singularity is no longer necessary, thanks to the Summoned. The Awakening of Magicks is a new and more uplifting ceremony held in one of the city's enchanted gardens. At the center stands a beautifully decorated topiary tree shaped to resemble the Singularity. Though lined with ribbons and holly, it's completely unlit.

Throughout the evening, you can enjoy delicious food, soft music, and a gift basket of Thorne's finest wines, desserts, and soothing potions. It's an ideal time to exchange presents or take a stroll around the winter-themed garden. Important aristocratic families will be there, and they all seem very curious about your presence.

At the end of the night, the Summoned are gathered by the King and Queen. Here, High Mage Ambrose Rhett will guide you in a spell to cast firelight from your palm, releasing a flickering ball of light towards the tree and illuminating the "Singularity" itself. The ceremony symbolizes your unique role in Abraxas and your ability to have your magic at a time when all other Thorneans are in darkness. The tree will remain lit until the real Singularity gains its full strength.

Light of Many Moons
Borrel | Dec. 18-20
Less a formal event and more an enticing phenomenon, locals gather annually on Borrel's seas to watch the moon jellies light up the ocean beneath their boats. Climb aboard to see for yourself. Boats won't travel out unless at least two people are aboard. Grab yourself a friend or wait to see who joins you as a surprise. The glow lasts only for ten or twenty minutes before it fades.

Stories say that if you glimpse a sea jelly that glows an odd red hue, you have a weight you must cast off by the season's end. Catching sight of this red moon jelly during your ride will cause your thoughts to wander toward something important you've always wanted to do or say. You might gain the courage to act right then and there, or you might do so later with a trusted companion. Afterwards, you feel a great relief.

By the time you're back ashore, you're probably pretty cold. Luckily, Borrel's inns are happy to serve the Summoned on the house during this special occasion. Enjoy a hearty meal and a drink free of charge.

Feast of the New Dawn
Nott | Dec. 27
Usually held in Castle Thorne, Nott has requested to host the feast this year to show their appreciation for the Summoned. A more humble affair than the castle's royal banquets, the town's best bakers, cooks, and brewers have come together to provide a feast of stews, grilled fish, and an array of pies and tarts.

Lyle Vela, Lord of Representatives in Nott, will attend. He won't have time for long conversations, but he'll be happy to learn your name and shake your hand. If you'd like to ask him a quick question or give him a message, you're welcome to do so. Just take care what you say. Although Nott's dissatisfaction with the monarchy isn't a secret, the town is hosting you on behalf of Castle Thorne, so be sure to keep things diplomatic.

Ask a question or pass a message to Lyle Vela here.

Free Cities: Festival of Enlightenment
Enlightenment and freedom from dependency on magic have come once more to the Free Cities. The phrase "Lights for Enlightenment!" is on every citizen's lips. Extravagant parties bring a buzz everywhere. Many creators flock to show off their work, whether that's a new invention or the season's trendiest fashions. Outfits emphasize the concept of illumination, using reflective fabrics and gems. Vendors offer little mechanical toys, decorations, and jewelry. Some glow due to naturally occurring substances, some have chemical reactions activated with the press of a button.
General Activities
◎ Each year in CADENS, special light-up carriages take eager citizens on set routes around the city to view the street decorations. Most importantly, each wagon is sponsored and designed by a particular association to draw attention to a cause or their services. The Academies, Fort Wilbridge, and the Free City Theater Company are common sponsors. This year, the Summoned will have a carriage to decorate using lights, metal bits, and glowing paints. Add your unique touch to the design if you like. The carriage is running regardless, so you should probably try to put something on it.

◎ In AQUILA, you'll have your pick of galas to attend from garden parties to fashion shows. Some of the most wealthy and influential people are out and about, and enterprising individuals are eager to make friends in high places. Naturally, this includes the Summoned, who've become a unique feature in the Free Cities. If you're lower on the Influence scale, you have a chance of going unbothered. If you're at 4 or higher, you're unlikely to escape attention. Designers will try to get you to wear something of theirs to show it off while locals will invite you to their exclusive cocktail parties or try to introduce themselves. You might even find some gossip or story about you in the papers the next day.

◎ In LIBERTAS, the party comes to you. Festivities spill out onto the streets at all hours of the day, sweeping up everyone who steps into the city. Art is displayed on every corner while outdoor stages are set up for concerts, poetry readings, and plays. Why not take to the stage yourself? Charity work is also common. Entertainers visit orphanages, and volunteers deliver food to those in need. All of them could use some help. Residents in Libertas are especially happy to see you after all you've done.
Main Events
Circus of the Sciences
Cadens | Dec. 17-19
In front of Portham Hall, great inventors gather to show off their creations, each vying to win the coveted prize of government funding. All inventions are on display to the public and judged by a team of Ministry officials. The harshest of them is Aleksander G. Klingel, known for his vital contributions to Cadens' technological advancements. This year, he's returned to solicit the Summoned in an experiment you might recognize if you've been around. It'll take only a minute! All you have to do is hold a metal rod. The tingling can grow painful if you hang on too long, but Aleksander won't stop you if you're determined.

Inventor Clarice Amaury has also created what she calls a Soul Mirror (trademarks pending). Designed as a therapeutic tool, the beautiful scenic cube behaves almost like a genuine biome. Clarice claims that watching the soothing forest within will help you reflect on your inner self. You're certainly relaxed and contemplative after you've interacted with the cube and your thoughts begin to turn toward something important you've wanted to do or say - which might be to the stranger next to you or a friend. Follow your heart, and you could find it feeling much lighter.

Gala of Illumination
Aquila | Dec. 20
The most influential party in the whole of the Free Cities, the Gala is held in the Gallery of Fine Arts, an architectural marvel that's converted into an enchanting ballroom. Well-known figures will be here, from famous performers to wealthy patrons to powerful politicians. Getting an invitation to this coveted event isn't easy, but the Summoned have a standing invitation. To entice important guests - including you - organizers offer free styling assistance, one-of-a-kind designer pieces to borrow for the night (you'll need to return it after!), and a gift bag containing wine, handcrafted accessories, and exotic desserts. More fancy canapés and drinks await inside, alongside dancing and famous artworks.

Fallon Marsh, Aquila's representative, will attend. With a sharp eye for commerce, he's led the city's economy to blossom during his tenure. He won't have time for long conversations, but he'll be happy to learn your name and shake your hand. If you'd like to ask him a quick question or give him a message, you're welcome to do so. Rumor has it he has something of a rivalry with Aleksander Klingel and Quilleth Kaur, but it's best not to bring that up.

Ask a question or pass a message to Fallon Marsh here.

Liberty Charity Auction
Libertas | Dec. 22
Libertas has often been the most community-driven of the cities. This year's Liberty Charity Auction is focused on the children left parentless after the attacks, and the Summoned are encouraged to attend. It'll be held in a performance theater next to the Willow Memorial Park. Quilleth Kaur will give a heartfelt speech in memory of the lives lost before yielding the stage to event organizers. Art pieces, exclusive collectibles like the first draft of a famous manuscript, and painting or acting lessons from the masters of their craft are all up for bid. Some of the more expensive pieces might be out of your price range, but you can bid on smaller items like imperfect sculptures or used tools.

You can sign up to auction off something, as well. Don't worry if you're not highly skilled or don't feel you have much to give. Learning about your unique home world or owning something you've made is an appeal in and of itself. As long as your efforts are sincere, you'll earn a bid to help the children. All proceeds will go to orphanages in the Free Cities.

If you'd rather help behind the scenes, you can organize the items up for bidding, write and deliver invitations to guests before the event, or help serve food and drink to attendees.

Solvunn: Winter Solstice
As the Winter Solstice approaches, spirits in Solvunn are high. Hung across every doorway and window are boughs of holly and large garlands of evergreen decorated with bells, twine, and poinsettia. Small altars adorned with candles glow at dusk. At night, bonfires roar in the middle of town where the adults can mingle. Songs and stories of the Gods are shared.
General Activities
◎ Throughout the PRIMARY SETTLEMENT, you'll be met with open doors wherever you go. Kindly neighbors will invite you out of the cold for a meal or gift you a bounty: mead, bread, scented candles, or even money. It's vital you accept the offerings, though there's no harm in paying it forward. Locals will be happy to take your gifts or accept an invitation from you in return. As you go about the settlement, you might attract notice. If you're lower on the Influence scale, you have a chance of going unbothered. If you're at 4 or higher, you're unlikely to escape attention. People will insist you join them to visit a shrine, ask for a blessing, or request your wisdom with a problem.

◎ In the SECONDARY SETTLEMENT, one key tradition returns: the Goat of All Tidings. A handsome-looking black goat wearing a festive coat made of patchwork tapestries is brought out and set loose to a boisterous chorus of cheers. It'll run freely, waiting to be caught. If you can lay a kiss upon the Goat of All Tidings, good fortune will follow you into the new year. Fail to apprehend and kiss the goat or befall its temper, and misfortune shall be your guide. Be careful! Snow and sleet make for slippery meadows this time of year.

◎ In the TERTIARY SETTLEMENT, preparations for Xeimer's Plunge are taking place. Pickled herring and fresh-caught fish are being collected and placed into bowls carved from antler and bone for the Elders to examine. Only the finest fish will do. Xeimer's shrine features a small pool in which approved offerings of fish are placed. Of course, his shrine must be protected and tidied daily to make sure it's ready for the upcoming Plunge. The herring attracts pests and small predators, which you can help defend the shrine from.
Main Events
Blessing of Light
Primary Settlement | Dec. 20
Known only as The Light, this Guardian of Darkness is a key figure during the darkest days of the year. Along with Xeimer, the Light must be appeased or else the community risks plunging the world into an everlasting winter. In previous years, this involved Elders going from house to house to light the candles placed outside every door in small covered altars.

This year, due to the significant role of the Summoned in Solvunn, you've been asked to accept the task. Since Solvunn believes the Singularity's dormancy is part of a natural cycle, they will not request you use your magic, though you may if the Gods compel you to do so. The candles can be lit with a simple wooden splint. However you decide to do it, though, the important part is that you agree to give your blessing to each home by lighting the candle, then taking the offering placed beside the outdoor altar. The offering is usually a bone charm carved to represent the flaming crown of The Light.

You can turn down the role if you want, but declining to take part will be met with uncertainty, and even a hint of fear. The natives will want to know what they've done to offend you so greatly.

Snowdrop Exchange
Secondary Settlement | Dec. 18-22
Pledging yourself to the Gods is important to Solvunnites, but equally vital is your relationship with your neighbor. The Snowdrop Exchange is about reaffirming those relationships. White drooping snowdrop flowers bloom across the fields of the Secondary Settlement throughout the winter. You'll be encouraged to harvest the flowers and make a small bundle tied with a blue ribbon, then gift the bouquet to another person. This can be someone you want to get to know better or someone who already has a place in your life.

Doing so will cause you to experience a strange warmth in the cold. You find your mind wandering to something important you've always wanted to do or say. You might gain the strength to act right then and there to the person you've pledged to, or you might do so later with somebody else. Once you do, you feel much lighter, as though Xemeir himself has released you from the weight of your worries.

Xeimer's Plunge
Tertiary Settlement | Dec. 21
To make good on their promises, the Council has chosen to hold this year's Plunge in the Tertiary Settlement. Xeimer's Plunge is based on the Herald of the Frost's love of the winter waves. Participants strip down and dive or run straight into the freezing Hydra Gulf to join him on his swim. Don't fret! You'll get thick blankets, hot cider, and a roaring bonfire to gather around afterwards. While there's a desire to appease the Old God, the event is also about accepting a thrilling challenge, something the locals love to do.

Rowan March, a member of the Council, will attend. Known for keeping the peace between farms, Rowan is a familiar face to all of Solvunn. He won't have time for long conversations, but he'll be happy to learn your name and shake your hand. If you'd like to ask him a quick question or give him a message, you're welcome to do so. Rumor has it there was conflict between him and former Council member Josselyn Creed - now disgraced and executed - but you'd be wise not to discuss Josselyn during this happy occasion.

Ask a question or pass a message to Rowan March here.
There are no Influence requirements.

Oleuni Square
Summoned who were here for the previous winter will remember Nocwich's role in the celebrations, mediating a discussion in Luna for nation officials. This year, Nocwich has taken a backseat, but since the holidays often bring a good amount of money to shops and markets, Nocwich will open for visitors from December 14-20 and from December 23-28. To conserve magic, portals will close on the 21st and 22nd.

Only Oleuni Square will be open. Luna and Ikorr are both closed. Lady Elin is also not available during this period.
The Marketplace
Making up the majority of the Square, the Marketplace consists of a series of outdoor stalls and a few actual shops. Whatever you can think of can be found here, from jewelry to clothing to food and wine. There are fancier eateries where one can order a meal and cheap street vendors. Much of what's available is of fairly high quality. If you're looking to buy some gifts or simply spend time with friends from other nations, here's a good place to do so.

All of the usual sights and sounds can be found, with a few additions for the season.
THE MAIN STAGE. Musical performances and plays will celebrate the Winter Solstice. Merchants will bring around roasted chestnuts and cider for attendees to enjoy. Dancing is encouraged!

SHOPS & STALLS. Shops will cater to those searching for presents or that touch of something special to their outfit for an upcoming party. Take a look at winter-themed jewelry, fine fabrics, and bouquets of flowers found only in Nocwich. Or what about a glowing tattoo for a permanent mark?

EATERIES. To attract customers, eateries and inns will offer special items for the holidays. Try uniquely spiced mead and cocktails, taste exquisitely crafted desserts, or order the chef's platter for dinner. You can also book a romantic holiday room for you and an important someone.
The Arcanis
The height of luxury and the pride of Luna, The Arcanis is a "cruise liner" that first made its introduction last year. The decks are spacious and could be mistaken for a grand opera house. The ship seems suspiciously bigger on the inside, but locals will tell you that it looks as expected - nothing unusual to see.

Though The Arcanis is normally docked in Luna, the werewolves have moved it to the shores of Oleuni Square for this occasion. It offers an eatery, gambling lounges, and spas, as well as the following unique features that take place only in the winter.

SKYLINE SEA
Once a year, during the Dimming on the night of December 20, creatures of the deep sea take to the skies. Legend has it these creatures never used to reside in the water, but the Singularity's growing strength forced them to migrate deep under the ocean due to the interference with song frequencies.

Most of the marine life are whales and sea jellies, but following behind them is the fearsome golden serpent and its friendlier but no less gigantic companion the rainbow carp. These creatures will not attack. They will simply migrate across the sky and vanish into the stars.

You can watch this incredible phenomenon on the deck of The Arcanis or on the shores. You'll get a thick fur blanket to protect you from the cold. Those watching are encouraged to make a wish and then share that wish with one other person. The Lunae believe sharing a wish with another will help it come true.

CHARLIE THE TURTLE
Charlie, affectionately referred to as Admiral Chuck by the captain, is an ancient turtle that's resided on the ship since its first voyage. He's often seen lumbering through the upper and lower decks at an average turtle pace. Staff will claim that they've seen him speed by out of the corner of their eye, but none have proof.

Legend has it that Chuck may have witnessed the Sinking of Tornis or perhaps even once was a resident creature of the now-vanished city of Tornis. No proof of this exists, either, but turtles are extraordinarily long-lived so he may have been there.

While he isn't very talkative during the rest of the year, the winter cheer has made him open up again, especially if you bring him food. Those gifted in animal speech or other unique communication abilities can have a conversation with Chuck.

To converse with Admiral Chuck, reply HERE with what you'll say and an answer of some sort may come. Keep in mind that he is, in the end, just a regular turtle, so his insight may be limited.

[ The moment he steps outside the confines of Castle Thorne, there's more of an ease to his posture along with an air of openness curiosity to the sights around him.

The cord that winds through the streets of Borrel is certainly a curiosity. He figures out rather quickly what it's meant to be. Most of them are symbolic but there are a couple clearly written in childish handwriting that tug at his heartstrings. A small voice tells him not to get too involved, that taking ribbons is merely meant to be symbolic - but his tender heart ends up reaching for a handful of others that require more effort than coin to fulfill. How he's going to accomplish them however is beyond him but maybe he can find someone to team up with to fulfill them.

He can also be found around Nott thanks to his new courier role courtesy of Kyle, delivering letters and running errands for the merchants. Between errands he chats with some of the locals and merchants, getting to know them and he's positively charming. Eventually however he gets coaxed (read: bullied) by a gaggle of the children that had been foisted upon him to entertain to go ice skating. Much to their surprise and dismay however, he's skating circles around them.

If someone is having trouble, he'll offer up some assistance. Or altneratively if they seem pretty comfortable on some skates - ]

How about a race?

[ While this may be Thancred's first time ever ice skating, he's picked it up with relative ease. Once he sorted out what muscles to use when, how to glide forward one foot at a time, and how to maintain his balance, it had all fallen into place.

He might not be performing any flashy jumps just yet, but he looks surprisingly comfortable on the skates for someone who's never done this before in his life.

It's an enjoyable enough way to pass the time that he can understand why so many of the people of Nott have come out here. There are children giggling as they race around, young couples skating hand-in-hand — it's all rather heart-warming, given what these people have been through in the past year or so.

When a voice to his right pipes up to suggest a race, Thancred is jarred from his thoughts and glances over to take in the man's face. He's only vaguely familiar, from the last Summoned gathering for those newly brought up from the well. ]

Why not? [ Thancred's face brightens with a roguish grin. It would be the perfect way to test his newly-acquired skating skills. ] How many laps did you have in mind?

[ There's some level of calculation when it came down to who Cassian was challenging to a race. As much as he'd been zipping around the rink, he always kept an eye out on his surroundings. Even though he was relatively certain that no one else from the Empire was skulking around, it was second nature for him and in some ways it would be foolish not to.

It came in handy in other ways apart from feeding his paranoia and ensuring he was ready to act at a moment's notice if there was any hint of danger - like figuring out who to challenge to a perfectly innocent skating race for example. He thinks he's a Summoned, or at least fairly sure that he is. There hadn't been that many white-haired humanoids in attendance at Jill and Istredd's gathering after all. It's all the more reason for him to get to know the others he'd been brought here with and maybe, have a little fun that isn't tinged by his ever lingering guilt.

The smile that breaks across the man's face is one that Cassian is familiar with and he knows immediately that he'd picked the right person to challenge. ]

Three? Bonus points for not tripping over any kids.

[ There are so many zipping around the ice rink that it's entirely possible for them to accidentally collide with one. Or several. ]

Ah, a worthy addition to the challenge.

[ The little tots truly are all over the place, and while Thancred is relieved to see the children at play when their lives are hardly the easiest, dodging them while also skating quickly and efficiently will be a difficult task.

Yet an enjoyable one.

His eyes gleam with the promise of competition. There is one more thing to settle before they commence the race, however. ]

And is there aught we're racing for but our own pride?

[ He skates idly in a backwards circle for now, awaiting the other's response. There doesn't necessarily have to be some skin in the game, but he may as well ask. ]

[ Finding enough levity to buoy the anchor that weighed his heart down is a constant battle, one of many that Cassian found himself in on a daily basis even here. It didn't matter that life as he knew it back home was frozen as if in carbonite or that he would return to that point in time eventually. Skepticism and what if's always threaded themselves through the fact people told him. So did the gnawing guilt that he shouldn't be living life without the looming threat of the Empire and the twist of the knife in his gut that reminded him that by being here he was letting everyone else at home down again were feelings that did not care. They demanded to be felt.

But blissfully, by some form of miracle, he's momentarily shielded from them here amongst the laughter around him and the prospect of competition.

He hums in thought. ]

I don't have much coin. [ That could be indicative of what he'd like in and of itself, but he goes on. ] Are there other things you think a newly arrived Summoned would find useful?

[ Or in other words: was the handsome stranger with white hair really going to take what little a newly arrived Summoned already had? ]
funbreaker: (thancred-court-017)

[personal profile] funbreaker 2024-01-08 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[ No, there isn't much that Thancred likely needs from this man who he's just met, and if they are going to compete for little more than the fun of it and some bragging rights (that no one else will particularly care about), then so be it.

Although, there is one idea he can throw out there, as a chilling wind cuts through even the warm clothes he's wearing as he glides around on the ice. ]

How about a warm drink and a story or two? In your case, that is. As for me, I'll be happy to answer any questions you might have about this place. [ Does he mean Nott? Thorne? Abraxas? All of the above? Either way, he imagines that the thing a new person would want most is information.

He skates up to the other man, then, to holds his hand out. All that is left is to shake on it, and then their race can begin. ]
diametrically: (pic#16867154)

[personal profile] diametrically 2024-01-10 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Cassian considered himself a rather simple man. He didn't need much to live and had slept in far worse conditions than what Thorne currently had them set up in. Coin was nice but only so far as being able to find transportation off a planet or purchasing weapons - neither of which he could do. But the real valuable thing, he was discovering, was information.

That much would never change no matter what planet or galaxy he found himself in.

There's a glimmer of interest in Cassian's gaze at the offer and he doesn't hesitate in shaking the man's hand. ]

Deal. [ His hand falls back to his side. ] On the count of three?
funbreaker: (pic#16108610)

[personal profile] funbreaker 2024-01-12 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
[ Naturally, Thancred isn't bound by contract to share any information he finds overly sensitive or would feel unwilling to share with someone who hasn't already earned his trust. He barely knows this man, hasn't even asked his name, but that will come in time, he's sure.

Either way, it doesn't need to be anything too serious. Just a bit of friendly competition.

So he skates into place at Cassian's side, then takes a look at the rest of the iced-over pond to track where people are currently positioned and what sort of path he could carve. Granted, it all changes with each passing second, but he can account for that. ]

One... two... [ He bends his knees slightly, readies to spring forward. ] Three!

[ And off he goes, half of his attention focused on the precise movements needs to skate smoothly, the other on where he's going. There are quite a good number of children, and it isn't long before he needs to make a sudden detour to not crash right into one of them. ] Watch it!

[ The race is on. ]
diametrically: (pic#16867159)

[personal profile] diametrically 2024-01-13 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
[ Luckily for Thancred, the only information Cassian really prefers to know is anything and everything about this world. Just because he didn't want ties to this place, didn't rule out the fact that there could be something that could send him home.

But maybe he'd put up appearances and ask a couple of things about him just for the hell of it. That's a future scenario for him to consider, however. There's more important things right now: like winning a race and perhaps more importantly, not tripping over a kid.

They're similar in height and build - which means that neither of them have an advantage on the other physically, something that Cassian had accounted for. He skates off after him, zipping in between the other bodies skating pleasantly around them.

Taking advantage of his opponent nearly crashing into a kid, Cassian bolts right past him. The first bend around the pond serves him his first challenge - a line of children three abreast, holding hands and skating towards him. ]

Lift your hands!

[ They hear him at the last minute letting out screeches. It isn't clear they're going to do as he asks - but then they do and he finds himself ducking, keeping himself as small as possible to slide under them. ]

[ While Cassian has taken an early lead, that doesn't mean that the race has already been decided. Thancred is not one to simply assume that he's lost, especially not in a situation like this where he's quite confident in his own abilities.

There are still plenty of obstacles to change the course of their competition, and while Cassian uses some quick thinking to not crash right into a chain of three children, he does have to manage his speed as he skids under them.

A risk-taker, then. Good to know.

Thancred picks up his speed, thighs pumping as he finds an opening on that first bend and takes the lead. ]

Keep up! [ He shouts back to Cassian as he passes him. ] I'd rather this not be an easy victory.

[ With that little taunt delivered, Thancred focuses on what's in front of him. The straightaway is easier to navigate, although he does get a few dirty looks from people who seem to find the fast skating far too dangerous.

As he comes up on the second bend, there's yet another hurdle to jump in the form of a man and woman who have decided to lock lips in the most inopportune place. Since they seem to have no idea that anyone other than their partner exists in this moment, yelling out to them won't do any good. With a hiss of frustration, Thancred has to shift to the very edge of the pond, meaning he can't take as tight a turn as he would have liked. ]

[ As slick as the maneuver is, Cassian knows it's too early to celebrate, especially when Thancred goes speeding by him as he straightens up and has to pick up speed again. Losing momentum is a small price to pay for not being narrowly clotheslined by children and then having to deal with the aftermath of that. Nothing ended a race faster than three crying children. ]

No points for style then?

[ Would it be a race without a little bit of smack talk? Probably not. Cassian rolls his eyes, but Thancred's words are met with determination. Wind and laughter whistles past his ears. Pumping his arms he ramps up his speed again taking advantage of the straight shot cleared for him in Thancred's wake.

The strategy is two-fold. Why waste a clear path? And two, he could easily use drafting to his advantage even with the slight distance between them. A third advantage makes itself known soon enough in the form of a pre-occupied couple. Cassian watches as Thancred veers off wide and with enough time, Cassian takes the tighter turn that Thancred hadn't been able to. Sailing around the second bend, Cassian takes the lead - only to have his ice skate catch in a deep groove sending him wobbling and no choice but to slow some to save his ankle from twisting. ]

That wasn't discussed, was it?

[ If Cassian wanted to earn bonus points, he should have mentioned it during their initial deliberation. Of course, Thancred isn't that serious about any of this and it's all good fun, just exchanging some smack talk back and forth as is practically required in this scenario.

Granted, even with his stylish moves, Cassian does take advantage of the situation to assert the lead once more. Thancred comes out of the wider turn ready to pick up speed and try to gain on him, though he frankly isn't certain he'll be able to catch up with him if no further obstacles present themselves.

Then Cassian wobbles, his skate seeming to have caught on something, and that's all the encouragement Thancred needs to push even harder. The sharp edges of his skates dig into the ice as he accelerates, with the so-called finish line in sight...

Until a member of Nott's small but still present city guard yells at him from nearby off the ice, waving his arms around. "Slow down already! You two are gonna hurt someone!"

Thancred skids to a stop, kicking up ice in the process. Well, perhaps they should have seen that coming. Still, he'd rather not get on the bad side of the guard, and so he nods to the guardsman, complicit. ]

Sorry, sorry...

[ It's not like there was a sign posted saying to skate slowly. Besides, he and his opponent both had things more than under control! ]

[ It hadn't occurred to him at the time. He wasn't a particularly flashy person. Flashy usually drew unwanted attention and Cassian spent most of his life resolutely staying out of it. Unfortunately even if that's what his intention typically was, he'd landed himself in plenty of situations where he had been minding his own business and still manages to draw the attention of unwanted gazes.

Like taking a walk to clear his mind on the beach only to be mistaken for other troublemakers who had clearly been trying to run away from something. Or challenging another Summoned to a race.

The sound of the city guard barely registers as he struggles to keep himself upright. When he finally feels stable enough to do so, he glances up - only to find himself and what little momentum he still has barreling him right into Thancred. A shout of warning is the only warning he can give.

Oops. What was that about hurting someone? ]

[ Before Thancred can even think to turn back toward Cassian to report that the race appears to be off, there's a quick shout of alarm. Thancred pivots, but there isn't enough time to process what's going on before Cassian barrels right into him.

As much as Thancred tries to adjust by grabbing onto Cassian's shoulders to steady them both, they're still on ice, and he ends up forced into a backward skate, his balance quickly called into question. ]

What are you—

[ And it's not dignified, not in the slightest, but at this point he thinks it might be worse if they stay upright. Skates will fly, muscles will be tweaked trying to maintain balance. He does his best to make sure the fall is controlled, at least, as they both tumble down and sprawl out onto the ice. ]

Ugh—

[ That went swimmingly. ]

[ They probably look as ridiculous as he feels. The onlookers - specifically the children - have all stopped to stare at this point. Unashamed they giggle behind mittened hands as they slip and slide on the ice desperately trying to find balance and traction where there is none.

The inevitable happens and Cassian braces himself as gravity triumphs. He nearly lands face first, twisting slightly at the last minute so that his elbow connects with the ice instead, sending pain shooting up his joints. For a moment all he can do is lie there on the ice. Whatever energy he had while he was racing around the lake has seemingly evaporated. Eventually he manages to untangle their limbs, rolling onto his back to face the gray sky above them. His breath comes out in a stream of white. His voice sounds mildly pained but there's the undercurrent of a laugh to it. ]

Should we call that a draw?

[ Thancred is relieved for the gloves he's wearing as he pushes his hands against the ice to at least make it into a crouch. It's going to be a bit of an interesting time, standing up on ice with blades strapped to his feet, but he's observed how others managed it. Slow and steady.

His friend, meanwhile, looks content to simply remain spread-eagled on the ice for a time and process what just happened. Thancred huffs a laugh under his breath, even as he gets to his feet. He's wobbly on his skates for a few seconds, but then reasserts his balance. ]

Yes, I think I'd like a drink and a hot bowl of food now.

[ He extends a hand down to help Cassian up.

Meanwhile, the guard is still glaring at them. Thancred shrugs at him, perhaps not as apologetic as he should be. ]
Well, we slowed down, didn't we?

[ And at this rate, they'll be moving off of the pond soon enough to nurse their wounded pride. And any actual bruises that they received from that fall. ]

[ That would make two of them. By the time Thancred has gotten up to his feet, Cassian has begun the process of rolling onto his stomach and then to all fours. Picking himself up off the ice probably isn't what the mages had had in mind when they had delivered the finely magic-made gloves but what they knew wouldn't hurt them.

Gratefully he accepts the hand held out to him. Steadying himself comes almost as quickly as it does for Thancred and as far as he can tell nothing is going to be immediately sore. Well, not until tomorrow probably. As he brushes himself off he spares a glance towards the city guard with a similar not very apologetic shrug before pushing off towards the edge of the pond to remove his skates. As he finishes lacing up his boots he casts the white-haired man a good natured look. ]

Alyx, by the way. Probably should have introduced myself first before getting us in trouble.

[ Any residual soreness can be chased away or hopefully even prevented by making use of a hot bath. It's one of the few luxuries of the castle that Thancred will still venture in to enjoy from time to time, as the standing tub that he and Urianger have in their flat isn't nearly as luxurious.

Food and a drink first, though.

Thancred follows along after the other Summoned so that they can sit and remove their skates without being in the way. He nods at the introduction. ]
Thancred Waters. And I wouldn't fret too much. We can hardly be the only ones who've decided to race on the ice.

[ Once he's replaced one pair of footwear with another, he picks up the skates with one hand and then stands. The rental desk is nearby, so he heads that way to return them. He shoots a glance to Alyx as they walk. ] You came in with the most recent batch of Summoned, did you not?

[ Embarrassingly, indulging in these baths is one of the few things that Cassian has found himself enjoying. It's a begrudging luxury, one that he hadn't really ever had the opportunity to indulge in. But admitting as much feels like giving the royal family more credit than he's willing to deserve. But he has to bathe and what else is meant to use? Needless to say he'll probably be making a trip there too. This is the cleanest he's been in days. ]

I've been in trouble for worse.

[ Quickly he falls in step with Thancred as they go to return their skates. A nearby merchant calls out his wares - warm drinks to warm cold toes. Which frankly sounds right up their alley. He cants his head in that direction. ]
What gave it away?

[ In reality, he knows there had really only been a handful of them to arrive. He'd taken a careful glance around the room during their welcoming party and it had been easy to pick out the slightly clueless from the crowd. ]

[ While Alyx tosses those words out casually, Thancred wonders at them. I've been in trouble for worse. What kind of worse? Still, even if he were to ask, this is far too public of a place to do so and he's become used to taking care with where and how he uses his words in Thorne.

It's not quite as stifling here in Nott compared to the Castle, but still he takes care.

A warm drink sounds even better than a glass of hard liquor after sprawling all over the ice. Thancred notices Alyx's interest in the nearby stall and immediately leads them that way. ]

There are not so many of us here, so it's quite noticeable when there's a new face. I saw you at the gathering earlier this month, though I didn't find a chance to introduce myself then.

[ They reach the merchant's stall and Thancred orders a drink for himself before urging Alyx to do the same. He grabs for his coinpurse, ready to pay for both of them because Alyx already mentioned earlier that he doesn't have much coin to his name. ]

Well, neither of us technically won, but you're free to ask any questions you might have. I'll do my best to answer them.

[ A show of good faith. ]

wrapping!

[ It's meant to be more of an anecdotal saying that anything else even if the statement rings incredibly true. He had been in trouble for worse and everything in between. Which stories he told if asked were another question entirely. He could already gather that the Summoned were a diverse lot from all walks of life - but that didn't mean all of them would be receptive to a thief or a rebel. Better to keep all of that information close to his chest until he knew what he was dealing with.

They join the line and it's not long before they have something warm for each of them. Thancred reaching for his coinpurse is met with a nod of thanks and a quiet note to himself to repay the favour once this messenger gig started paying. It's the least he could do. ]

Walk and talk?

[ There's a path not too far from them that will loop around the lake and seemed far less crowded than where they were right now. It's both an acknowledgement about all the potential ears that could overhear their conversation. ]

I promise not to take advantage of your kindness.
