Previous years have seen political complications arrive during the winter holidays. Luckily, this year appears to be a simpler affair...as much as that's possible for one of the Summoned. Although there are no diplomatic events, the status of the Summoned has grown over the past three years - and that means locals pay particular attention to you during important celebrations, especially if you've earned yourself some Influence.

Festivities start to pick up on DECEMBER 14 and continue until they reach their peak on DECEMBER 21, which coincides with a phenomenon known as The Dimming. During this period, the Singularity goes dormant and magic wanes. Celebrations continue in the following days until the Singularity gains its full strength.

NOTE: The island investigation log includes a DECISION for all characters who participated in Event #12 regardless of if they've returned to the island. Please read this section even if your character isn't participating in the excursion.

Local Festivities

Customs vary between nations, but no matter where you reside, you'll be encouraged to play a role. You're not limited to what the locals are doing, either! If there are any traditions from your home world you miss or want to share with your friends, you're welcome to do so. Teach each other songs from home, make your best approximation of a classic holiday dessert, or if the spirit of generosity compels you, you can even donate gifts and food to the less fortunate.

Thorne: The Dimming

Throughout the Kingdom of Thorne, the Dimming begins. Held in harmony with the annual cycle of the seasons and the slide of the Singularity into temporary dormancy, the Dimming is a celebration of two halves. The mood is generally somber and reflective in the days leading to the winter solstice itself, with the promise of a fantastic explosion of life, light and renewal waiting on the other side.

General Activities

◎ Around the city of CASTLE THORNE, horse-drawn sleigh rides take you through a picturesque route of freshly fallen snow and breathtaking mountain views while you enjoy some mulled wine. Rides are free for the Summoned. Many will try to entice you into their carriage. It's good for business to have given one of you a ride! As you go about town, you might attract notice. If you're lower on the Influence scale, you have a chance of going unbothered. If you're at 4 or higher, you're unlikely to escape attention. People will buy you a drink, ask you about life in the castle, or want to see you demonstrate your magic while theirs has waned.

◎ In BORREL, the Winding of the Thread involves a single cord wound throughout the city. Hopeful residents write wishes on colorful ribbons, then hang them on the cord. While large wishes are often only symbolically taken, smaller wishes, such as a new scarf or a friend to have tea with, can be granted by generous souls. And who might that generous soul be? Why, you! If you're so inclined, you can take a ribbon as a promise to fulfill that wish. You can put up a wish of your own, too, of course. Maybe a fellow Summoned will answer it?

◎ In NOTT, one of the frozen ponds has been smoothed over for locals to go skating while other ponds are open for ice fishing. When you're ready to take a break, you can enjoy hot drinks, crisp ales, and Nott's famous fish pies. Merchants are busy during this time, so if you need a little money, most will pay you to run an errand, help stock their shops, or mind the kids for a couple of hours. Residents in Nott are especially happy to meet you after all you've done.

Main Events

Awakening of Magicks
Castle Thorne | Dec. 21

The burden whereby a Thornean mage sacrificed their life to offer a magical casket to the Singularity is no longer necessary, thanks to the Summoned. The Awakening of Magicks is a new and more uplifting ceremony held in one of the city's enchanted gardens. At the center stands a beautifully decorated topiary tree shaped to resemble the Singularity. Though lined with ribbons and holly, it's completely unlit.

Throughout the evening, you can enjoy delicious food, soft music, and a gift basket of Thorne's finest wines, desserts, and soothing potions. It's an ideal time to exchange presents or take a stroll around the winter-themed garden. Important aristocratic families will be there, and they all seem very curious about your presence.

At the end of the night, the Summoned are gathered by the King and Queen. Here, High Mage Ambrose Rhett will guide you in a spell to cast firelight from your palm, releasing a flickering ball of light towards the tree and illuminating the "Singularity" itself. The ceremony symbolizes your unique role in Abraxas and your ability to have your magic at a time when all other Thorneans are in darkness. The tree will remain lit until the real Singularity gains its full strength.

Light of Many Moons
Borrel | Dec. 18-20

Less a formal event and more an enticing phenomenon, locals gather annually on Borrel's seas to watch the moon jellies light up the ocean beneath their boats. Climb aboard to see for yourself. Boats won't travel out unless at least two people are aboard. Grab yourself a friend or wait to see who joins you as a surprise. The glow lasts only for ten or twenty minutes before it fades.

Stories say that if you glimpse a sea jelly that glows an odd red hue, you have a weight you must cast off by the season's end. Catching sight of this red moon jelly during your ride will cause your thoughts to wander toward something important you've always wanted to do or say. You might gain the courage to act right then and there, or you might do so later with a trusted companion. Afterwards, you feel a great relief.

By the time you're back ashore, you're probably pretty cold. Luckily, Borrel's inns are happy to serve the Summoned on the house during this special occasion. Enjoy a hearty meal and a drink free of charge.

Feast of the New Dawn
Nott | Dec. 27

Usually held in Castle Thorne, Nott has requested to host the feast this year to show their appreciation for the Summoned. A more humble affair than the castle's royal banquets, the town's best bakers, cooks, and brewers have come together to provide a feast of stews, grilled fish, and an array of pies and tarts.

Lyle Vela, Lord of Representatives in Nott, will attend. He won't have time for long conversations, but he'll be happy to learn your name and shake your hand. If you'd like to ask him a quick question or give him a message, you're welcome to do so. Just take care what you say. Although Nott's dissatisfaction with the monarchy isn't a secret, the town is hosting you on behalf of Castle Thorne, so be sure to keep things diplomatic.

Free Cities: Festival of Enlightenment

Enlightenment and freedom from dependency on magic have come once more to the Free Cities. The phrase "Lights for Enlightenment!" is on every citizen's lips. Extravagant parties bring a buzz everywhere. Many creators flock to show off their work, whether that's a new invention or the season's trendiest fashions. Outfits emphasize the concept of illumination, using reflective fabrics and gems. Vendors offer little mechanical toys, decorations, and jewelry. Some glow due to naturally occurring substances, some have chemical reactions activated with the press of a button.

General Activities

◎ Each year in CADENS, special light-up carriages take eager citizens on set routes around the city to view the street decorations. Most importantly, each wagon is sponsored and designed by a particular association to draw attention to a cause or their services. The Academies, Fort Wilbridge, and the Free City Theater Company are common sponsors. This year, the Summoned will have a carriage to decorate using lights, metal bits, and glowing paints. Add your unique touch to the design if you like. The carriage is running regardless, so you should probably try to put something on it.

◎ In AQUILA, you'll have your pick of galas to attend from garden parties to fashion shows. Some of the most wealthy and influential people are out and about, and enterprising individuals are eager to make friends in high places. Naturally, this includes the Summoned, who've become a unique feature in the Free Cities. If you're lower on the Influence scale, you have a chance of going unbothered. If you're at 4 or higher, you're unlikely to escape attention. Designers will try to get you to wear something of theirs to show it off while locals will invite you to their exclusive cocktail parties or try to introduce themselves. You might even find some gossip or story about you in the papers the next day.

◎ In LIBERTAS, the party comes to you. Festivities spill out onto the streets at all hours of the day, sweeping up everyone who steps into the city. Art is displayed on every corner while outdoor stages are set up for concerts, poetry readings, and plays. Why not take to the stage yourself? Charity work is also common. Entertainers visit orphanages, and volunteers deliver food to those in need. All of them could use some help. Residents in Libertas are especially happy to see you after all you've done.

Circus of the Sciences
Cadens | Dec. 17-19

In front of Portham Hall, great inventors gather to show off their creations, each vying to win the coveted prize of government funding. All inventions are on display to the public and judged by a team of Ministry officials. The harshest of them is Aleksander G. Klingel, known for his vital contributions to Cadens' technological advancements. This year, he's returned to solicit the Summoned in an experiment you might recognize if you've been around. It'll take only a minute! All you have to do is hold a metal rod. The tingling can grow painful if you hang on too long, but Aleksander won't stop you if you're determined.

Inventor Clarice Amaury has also created what she calls a Soul Mirror (trademarks pending). Designed as a therapeutic tool, the beautiful scenic cube behaves almost like a genuine biome. Clarice claims that watching the soothing forest within will help you reflect on your inner self. You're certainly relaxed and contemplative after you've interacted with the cube and your thoughts begin to turn toward something important you've wanted to do or say - which might be to the stranger next to you or a friend. Follow your heart, and you could find it feeling much lighter.

Gala of Illumination
Aquila | Dec. 20

The most influential party in the whole of the Free Cities, the Gala is held in the Gallery of Fine Arts, an architectural marvel that's converted into an enchanting ballroom. Well-known figures will be here, from famous performers to wealthy patrons to powerful politicians. Getting an invitation to this coveted event isn't easy, but the Summoned have a standing invitation. To entice important guests - including you - organizers offer free styling assistance, one-of-a-kind designer pieces to borrow for the night (you'll need to return it after!), and a gift bag containing wine, handcrafted accessories, and exotic desserts. More fancy canapés and drinks await inside, alongside dancing and famous artworks.

Fallon Marsh, Aquila's representative, will attend. With a sharp eye for commerce, he's led the city's economy to blossom during his tenure. He won't have time for long conversations, but he'll be happy to learn your name and shake your hand. If you'd like to ask him a quick question or give him a message, you're welcome to do so. Rumor has it he has something of a rivalry with Aleksander Klingel and Quilleth Kaur, but it's best not to bring that up.

Liberty Charity Auction
Libertas | Dec. 22

Libertas has often been the most community-driven of the cities. This year's Liberty Charity Auction is focused on the children left parentless after the attacks, and the Summoned are encouraged to attend. It'll be held in a performance theater next to the Willow Memorial Park. Quilleth Kaur will give a heartfelt speech in memory of the lives lost before yielding the stage to event organizers. Art pieces, exclusive collectibles like the first draft of a famous manuscript, and painting or acting lessons from the masters of their craft are all up for bid. Some of the more expensive pieces might be out of your price range, but you can bid on smaller items like imperfect sculptures or used tools.

You can sign up to auction off something, as well. Don't worry if you're not highly skilled or don't feel you have much to give. Learning about your unique home world or owning something you've made is an appeal in and of itself. As long as your efforts are sincere, you'll earn a bid to help the children. All proceeds will go to orphanages in the Free Cities.

If you'd rather help behind the scenes, you can organize the items up for bidding, write and deliver invitations to guests before the event, or help serve food and drink to attendees.

Solvunn: Winter Solstice

As the Winter Solstice approaches, spirits in Solvunn are high. Hung across every doorway and window are boughs of holly and large garlands of evergreen decorated with bells, twine, and poinsettia. Small altars adorned with candles glow at dusk. At night, bonfires roar in the middle of town where the adults can mingle. Songs and stories of the Gods are shared.

General Activities

◎ Throughout the PRIMARY SETTLEMENT, you'll be met with open doors wherever you go. Kindly neighbors will invite you out of the cold for a meal or gift you a bounty: mead, bread, scented candles, or even money. It's vital you accept the offerings, though there's no harm in paying it forward. Locals will be happy to take your gifts or accept an invitation from you in return. As you go about the settlement, you might attract notice. If you're lower on the Influence scale, you have a chance of going unbothered. If you're at 4 or higher, you're unlikely to escape attention. People will insist you join them to visit a shrine, ask for a blessing, or request your wisdom with a problem.

◎ In the SECONDARY SETTLEMENT, one key tradition returns: the Goat of All Tidings. A handsome-looking black goat wearing a festive coat made of patchwork tapestries is brought out and set loose to a boisterous chorus of cheers. It'll run freely, waiting to be caught. If you can lay a kiss upon the Goat of All Tidings, good fortune will follow you into the new year. Fail to apprehend and kiss the goat or befall its temper, and misfortune shall be your guide. Be careful! Snow and sleet make for slippery meadows this time of year.

◎ In the TERTIARY SETTLEMENT, preparations for Xeimer's Plunge are taking place. Pickled herring and fresh-caught fish are being collected and placed into bowls carved from antler and bone for the Elders to examine. Only the finest fish will do. Xeimer's shrine features a small pool in which approved offerings of fish are placed. Of course, his shrine must be protected and tidied daily to make sure it's ready for the upcoming Plunge. The herring attracts pests and small predators, which you can help defend the shrine from.

Main Events

Blessing of Light
Primary Settlement | Dec. 20

Known only as The Light, this Guardian of Darkness is a key figure during the darkest days of the year. Along with Xeimer, the Light must be appeased or else the community risks plunging the world into an everlasting winter. In previous years, this involved Elders going from house to house to light the candles placed outside every door in small covered altars.

This year, due to the significant role of the Summoned in Solvunn, you've been asked to accept the task. Since Solvunn believes the Singularity's dormancy is part of a natural cycle, they will not request you use your magic, though you may if the Gods compel you to do so. The candles can be lit with a simple wooden splint. However you decide to do it, though, the important part is that you agree to give your blessing to each home by lighting the candle, then taking the offering placed beside the outdoor altar. The offering is usually a bone charm carved to represent the flaming crown of The Light.

You can turn down the role if you want, but declining to take part will be met with uncertainty, and even a hint of fear. The natives will want to know what they've done to offend you so greatly.

Snowdrop Exchange
Secondary Settlement | Dec. 18-22

Pledging yourself to the Gods is important to Solvunnites, but equally vital is your relationship with your neighbor. The Snowdrop Exchange is about reaffirming those relationships. White drooping snowdrop flowers bloom across the fields of the Secondary Settlement throughout the winter. You'll be encouraged to harvest the flowers and make a small bundle tied with a blue ribbon, then gift the bouquet to another person. This can be someone you want to get to know better or someone who already has a place in your life.

Doing so will cause you to experience a strange warmth in the cold. You find your mind wandering to something important you've always wanted to do or say. You might gain the strength to act right then and there to the person you've pledged to, or you might do so later with somebody else. Once you do, you feel much lighter, as though Xemeir himself has released you from the weight of your worries.

Xeimer's Plunge
Tertiary Settlement | Dec. 21

To make good on their promises, the Council has chosen to hold this year's Plunge in the Tertiary Settlement. Xeimer's Plunge is based on the Herald of the Frost's love of the winter waves. Participants strip down and dive or run straight into the freezing Hydra Gulf to join him on his swim. Don't fret! You'll get thick blankets, hot cider, and a roaring bonfire to gather around afterwards. While there's a desire to appease the Old God, the event is also about accepting a thrilling challenge, something the locals love to do.

Rowan March, a member of the Council, will attend. Known for keeping the peace between farms, Rowan is a familiar face to all of Solvunn. He won't have time for long conversations, but he'll be happy to learn your name and shake your hand. If you'd like to ask him a quick question or give him a message, you're welcome to do so. Rumor has it there was conflict between him and former Council member Josselyn Creed - now disgraced and executed - but you'd be wise not to discuss Josselyn during this happy occasion.

Oleuni Square

Summoned who were here for the previous winter will remember Nocwich's role in the celebrations, mediating a discussion in Luna for nation officials. This year, Nocwich has taken a backseat, but since the holidays often bring a good amount of money to shops and markets, Nocwich will open for visitors from December 14-20 and from December 23-28. To conserve magic, portals will close on the 21st and 22nd.

Only Oleuni Square will be open. Luna and Ikorr are both closed. Lady Elin is also not available during this period.

The Marketplace

Making up the majority of the Square, the Marketplace consists of a series of outdoor stalls and a few actual shops. Whatever you can think of can be found here, from jewelry to clothing to food and wine. There are fancier eateries where one can order a meal and cheap street vendors. Much of what's available is of fairly high quality. If you're looking to buy some gifts or simply spend time with friends from other nations, here's a good place to do so.

All of the usual sights and sounds can be found, with a few additions for the season.

◎ THE MAIN STAGE. Musical performances and plays will celebrate the Winter Solstice. Merchants will bring around roasted chestnuts and cider for attendees to enjoy. Dancing is encouraged!

◎ SHOPS & STALLS. Shops will cater to those searching for presents or that touch of something special to their outfit for an upcoming party. Take a look at winter-themed jewelry, fine fabrics, and bouquets of flowers found only in Nocwich. Or what about a glowing tattoo for a permanent mark?

◎ EATERIES. To attract customers, eateries and inns will offer special items for the holidays. Try uniquely spiced mead and cocktails, taste exquisitely crafted desserts, or order the chef's platter for dinner. You can also book a romantic holiday room for you and an important someone.

The Arcanis

The height of luxury and the pride of Luna, The Arcanis is a "cruise liner" that first made its introduction last year. The decks are spacious and could be mistaken for a grand opera house. The ship seems suspiciously bigger on the inside, but locals will tell you that it looks as expected - nothing unusual to see.

Though The Arcanis is normally docked in Luna, the werewolves have moved it to the shores of Oleuni Square for this occasion. It offers an eatery, gambling lounges, and spas, as well as the following unique features that take place only in the winter.

◎ SKYLINE SEA

Once a year, during the Dimming on the night of December 20, creatures of the deep sea take to the skies. Legend has it these creatures never used to reside in the water, but the Singularity's growing strength forced them to migrate deep under the ocean due to the interference with song frequencies.

Most of the marine life are whales and sea jellies, but following behind them is the fearsome golden serpent and its friendlier but no less gigantic companion the rainbow carp. These creatures will not attack. They will simply migrate across the sky and vanish into the stars.

You can watch this incredible phenomenon on the deck of The Arcanis or on the shores. You'll get a thick fur blanket to protect you from the cold. Those watching are encouraged to make a wish and then share that wish with one other person. The Lunae believe sharing a wish with another will help it come true.

◎ CHARLIE THE TURTLE

Charlie, affectionately referred to as Admiral Chuck by the captain, is an ancient turtle that's resided on the ship since its first voyage. He's often seen lumbering through the upper and lower decks at an average turtle pace. Staff will claim that they've seen him speed by out of the corner of their eye, but none have proof.

Legend has it that Chuck may have witnessed the Sinking of Tornis or perhaps even once was a resident creature of the now-vanished city of Tornis. No proof of this exists, either, but turtles are extraordinarily long-lived so he may have been there.

While he isn't very talkative during the rest of the year, the winter cheer has made him open up again, especially if you bring him food. Those gifted in animal speech or other unique communication abilities can have a conversation with Chuck.

To converse with Admiral Chuck, reply HERE with what you'll say and an answer of some sort may come. Keep in mind that he is, in the end, just a regular turtle, so his insight may be limited.

[The circus is a flurry of exhibitions and events. Crane watches demonstrations with small amounts of fascination and curiosity - today investigating the work of others instead of his own. Crowds catch his attention; inviting him with the promise of learning and dialogue. But learning is done with research and experimentation.

Hours are systematically managed. People are located and evaluated. Those struggling to clasp the rod - or succeeding - spark his curiosity. He leans his head back and murmurs with the dignity of a nervous academic.]

[His turn arrives and the rod is thrust into his hand before he can finalize his thoughts. Fingers clench and release. Eyes fixate and focus. Lips pinch into a frown with the rising intensity: the rod in his hand is anything but kind. But he endures - one warm wrist and pins and needles in his fingers. He rolls his neck and closes his eyes while his skin tingles.]

[ With any luck, she won't notice him trying not to pace all day; even Ifrit inside of him is agitated, smoldering under his skin, and if Clive didn't know better he'd think the Eikon is just as nervous as he is. Whatever Ifrit's feelings on the matter, Clive does his best to ignore them and his own nerves, carefully packing the ring into his overnight bag when Jill isn't looking. He'd heard from people in Thorne about the creatures known as Moon Jellies in Borrel, beautiful aetherial beings that float through the ocean like moving stars. Even if he wasn't about to ask what feels like the most important question of his life, he'd want to take her; she deserves to see beautiful things.

He's rented them an inn room for the evening as well. Privacy is a rare thing in Castle Thorne, and he'd like to at least give her the gift of that, if nothing else. He opts to leave the ring in the room — he doesn't need it to ask, and he doesn't want to risk losing it in the ocean should something happen to them.

Their walk to the boats is leisurely, hand in hand, a light snow beginning to fall as they step onto the docks. Clive climbs into the boat first, holding his hand out for her to join him. ]

[After dressing as if a stained glass window at the event held by the fae earlier in the year, the dhampir is positively dressed down and content to be as such. Attending not for the sake of attention but out of architectural curiosity (and okay, Hilda talked him into it), Alucard favors a more 21st century suit with silver beading, saving the focus of decoration for the elaborate gloves with matching silver embellishments, enhanced by a number of jewels, most of them red.

His attention is currently on the art on display, wine glass in hand and a thoughtful expression as he looks at an especially abstract piece meant to show the passage of time through the desert from moonrise to dawn. There's a touch of cubism and a manipulation of perspective, something that feels both familiar from medieval art and yet wholly new.

[ All of the Summond in Solvunn are warmly invited to a traditional Earth Christmas at Claire's on December 14th. Her home is in the primary settlement, far enough from most other homes to spread out with the bees and her garden, but with enough distance between her and the treeline that she feels safe. Prior to the festivities beginning near sundown, anyone willing to help cut vegetables, move her furniture around, or decorate trees wouldn't be turned away. The house itself is small, the garden and wildflowers dormant for the winter. There's an obvious and large square void where the bee houses have been moved for the winter, but in its place is a large pot simmering over a fire invitingly. It's filled with hot cider spiced with cloves, cinnamon, and orange peel, but for anyone wanting to indulge, there's alcohol to add a bit more color to the cheeks.

She's moved her modest-sized kitchen table outdoors, covered it with a cloth, and laid out a spread of meat and cheese platters, and another pot is stewing closer to the house with a hearty soup of boar, potatoes, onions, carrots, and spices. The meat is courtesy of Nanaue and Aloy, and the cheese is courtesy of the local goats. There is honey, of course, though it's in limited supply: she started late and there was a bit of trial and error, but there's enough that everyone will have their own, small jar.*

The way to her home is lit with wreathes and candles, carefully place out of the direct walking. There's a large bonfire and blankets both for wrapping up and sitting on to stay warm. Two large confirous trees stand decorated with dried fruit and popcorn, lit by small candles. There's no set area to sing, but the mismatched chairs she has are arranged in a semi-circle, nice and convenient for an audience when Eddie begins performing Christmas carols. One last table has two plates piled high with a variety of cookies, decorated with icing carefully dyed by trial and error using various plants and berries. Everyone is more than welcome to eat, mingle, and sing until one in the morning or the last person leaves. Help cleaning up would be lovely, but she wouldn't ask, instead leaving the decorations for the birds.

[ For the most part, Cassian manages to slip under the radar of the bustle, playing the part of an unremarkable Summoned to a tee - mostly because it's true. Despite that, he's hustled onto the sleigh rides with just as much gusto and he doesn't resist, happy to leave the confines of the castle walls. A small part of him is quietly grateful for it if only to see what another planet could look like. The mulled wine and magically warmed clothes only serve to further his enjoyment. The weight of the sleigh shifts as another joins him and he casts a glance towards the new comer before spotting someone over their shoulder gazing at them. ]

I think you have an admirer.

[ At the Awakening of Magicks he can be found roaming around the gardens. It's not really his style, all this pageantry and ceremony so he's quiet and keeps to himself for the most part, continuing the trend of remaining unassuming. The baubles the aristocratic families wear would fetch a pretty penny, but as tempting as it may for him to try to lift something from them their constant gaze on him makes it difficult to redirect their attentions even momentarily.

Otherwise, he can be found attempting his hand at casting firelight and spectacularly failing. At most, the tiniest spark appears in his hand before fizzling out like a lighter. After several frustrating minutes of trying he lets out a huff of a laugh under his breath. ]

[ Not to say he doesn't always look good, but entering the illuminate ballroom in his bespoke suit and with those pointed ears, he looks a bit like he's stepped out of a portal from the Feywild. There's a certain natural allure that seems to draw eyes to him even if he's far from the most notable of the Summoned, in a way that he once craved, and a part of him still does. ]

Here, it's all yours - [ his gift basket is hastily shoved into the arms of whatever Summoned he recognizes first. The wine, the desserts, it's mostly garbage to him. Enjoy the free extra gift!

A little later you might overhear him answering questions about his outfit (made by an up and coming pair of fashion designers, very exclusive), and showing off a pretty pocket watch. ]

I had a hand in designing it, you see... [ Which, isn't really a lie. Less of a hand though and more of, uh, mildly pestering Viktor until he conceded to adding more filigree.

And, of course, what's a ballroom without dancing. Although Astarion seems to have been successfully fending off most would-be partners. He's always in the middle of some conversation involving at least one or two people, picking up gossip here and there while subtly(ish) trying to promote the wares he's wearing to those who seem to take interest. Let me at least finish my drink first, darling, he's wont to say, but he always vanishes sometime before his glass is empty. ]

[when wanda makes her way to the primary settlement from the treehouse at the black eyed lakes, it is almost immediate the way the locals call her name and draw her forth to the different activities they have taking place. she is immediately gifted with candles, with newly baked breads, and she knows better—by now—to decline. which is why she came ready, with her own basketful of treats to offer in return.

she’s not been working on her garden for most of the year for nothing. small bags with dried leaves and flowers are offered, in her own attempt at creating tea-brewing herbs. and so, in paying forward the gifts from the locals, wanda removes from herself feeling strange about being gifted a bounty of items for simply being a summoned.

this means that she’s also awfully familiar with the kind of emotions that will meet any of the summoned declining to take part of the ‘blessing giving’ gestures.]

It’s a little odd, [she says, picking at her own wooden splint and crouching down to light at one of the candles on the altar of one of the homes; the family looks excitedly from behind the window.] but it makes them happy.

I’m not sure what we’re supposed to do with the bone charms, though.

( SECONDARY SETTLEMENT & SNOWDROP EXCHANGE )

[something rather unusual rings out in the secondary settlement, as people go about trying to apprehend and kiss the goat: wanda’s uncontrolled laughter.

there is some childish glee at seeing the failed attempts, over the snow and sleet, as wanda sits down on a bench by a house, overseeing the event; she covers her face with both her hands, face flushing from it. she has a bouquet of snowdrop flowers set beside her, and it is a mystery as to whether they were given to her or if she’s collected them herself.

all she does, though, that’s moderately different from just laughing is raising a hand and making the goat’s hooves tangle with some (suddenly) overgrown roots, so that the poor sods trying to catch it have some better luck at it.]

( TERTIARY SETTLEMENT & XEIMER’S PLUNGE )

[wanda is happily oblivious to all talk about xeimer’s plunge, helping out with setting aside the freshly caught fish into bowls for their approaching role as an offering to xeimer’s shrine.]

I.

The final month of the year brings more work for Wilhelm, who has recently begun to establish himself as a courier between the castle town and Nott, but it also brings more fun things to do when he's done with his route. Considering that he also has more money to enjoy the festivities with, it's a fair trade-off.

As long as he has someone to go with, Wilhelm will happily check out any of the celebrations happening around the kingdom. On sleigh rides he'll drum up a little flame in his palm to ward off the cold, and the mulled wine keeps him in good spirits. Although, as the route takes them out of town and into all those breath-taking views, he finds himself checking the shadows at the wooded edges of the road...

In Borrel he reads through strings of wishes while munching on treats from a local bakery, and in Nott he reacquaints himself with ice-skating.

II.

Wilhelm quickly realizes that attending the Awakening of Magicks was a mistake. It's the exact sort of soiree — stuffy, solemn, overcrowded with aristocrats who see you as social currency — that he despises the most. He only showed up because it seemed expected of the Summoned, and he's keen on staying on the queen's good side.

Ugh.

Throughout the night, he can be found trying to extract himself from smalltalk with nobles, or hiding out in the gardens with a glass of wine.

The Feast of the New Dawn in Nott aligns much more closely with his idea of fun: food, drinks, music, and no glaring spotlight on him. But as the night deepens, you may catch a pensive mood descending on him, put there by the weight of the impending expedition to the abandoned island.

The majority of the time Wilhelm spends with Kyle is contained by their early morning training sessions and breakfast afterwards. Now that he's gotten set up as a courier, he keeps Kyle updated on how his routes are going. It's not terribly often that they get to do something fun together. So while he half-wonders that Kyle doesn't have somebody better to share a boat with, he happily takes him up on the suggestion.

As the boat slowly carves through the waves, Wilhelm peers over the edge into the water. So far it's still dark, minus the shimmering lights reflecting off the surface from the festivities on shore.

"Are we supposed to make a wish like last year?"

When they watched the glowing arc of creatures rising from the sea from the deck of the Arcanis, he means.

TERTIARY SETTLEMENT | DEC. 21

Unlike most, Sam doesn't quite have it in him to strip down completely. As such, when he comes out of the water, gasping and red all over, his shorts are clinging to him and he's trying desperately to wipe the cold water from his skin as if it might freeze him into a Sam-cicle. The plunge had been hard, and subsequently the treading of water had made him consider his sanity, but the walk out and waiting? Pure madness.

Towels are nearby along with cloaks and furs, but there are others queued and all Sam can do is shiver and shuffle back and forth while waiting his turn, mostly uncertain why he talked himself into the ritual, but not entirely hating the fact now that he's completed the task. It's certainly made him feel alive, wiping away any concern he might have had that this was some sort of elaborate dream.

"Oh, sorry—" he says, when accidentally pressing into Wrench's space while side-stepping a person on their way exuberantly towards the water. Another passes immediately following, cutting too close to Sam, threatening to send them both off the edge of the platform. "Whoa, whoa!" He's teetering on the edge, flailing, reaching...

[ Aquila is quickly becoming one of his favorite places in the Free Cities, and with how the place is lit up for the holidays, the whole city bustling with an excited energy that's downright infectious, that opinion isn't dimming any.

Since he was here to help out Jesper and Hilda get their new fashion business some attention, he can be spotted at several of the parties and galas hosted throughout the week, often wearing some pretty ostentatious outfits to show off his friends' designs. Most of them are not his typical attire, but he wears them in good spirits, more than happy to show them off (even if a few of them show quite a bit of him off in the process).

For the biggest party, the Gala of Illumination, Sylvain shows up all in gold, a vibrant contrast to Hilda's outfit for the night. But as the night goes on, he's likely to shed the outer coat for the intricate golden chain top he wears underneath, decorated with bright splashes of color in the adorning jewelry Hilda's made. He's rarely self-conscious and tonight isn't any exception as he shows off Jesper and Hilda's beautiful work.

While he doesn't have quite as much influential sway as his two closest friends, he manages to get away without the same amount of attention they garner, but he's okay with that - it gives him time to mingle and work his way around the ballrooms and salons, talking to everyone and basically letting himself be seen. More for Hilda and Jesper's sake than his own, but he'd always enjoyed a good party and these are no exception.

Should he spot a familiar face among the partygoers, he often makes a point of slipping away to catch a breath of fresh air and maybe steal them away as well, just for a momentary pause in all the excitement. He winks playfully as he sidles up to you, devilish grin fully in place tonight. ]

Geralt isn't an uncommon sight in Nadine's clinic. They've known each other since she began working out of her home. A locked cabinet labelled with his name sits amongst the others, containing the potions she brews for him. Lately, he's often gone in and out of her private room at the back.

He has not, however, visited since the start of November. A touch preoccupied with other...matters. When he opens the door, the clinic is now decorated for Yuletide with bits of shine and shimmer. There are boxes and baskets laid on the table, filled with jars of medicine, biscuits, and candied nuts.

And standing with them, a boy. A new face. Hm.

Geralt closes the door behind him with his heel. In his hands is a large wooden crate. A few painted wooden toys peek out from atop the pile. He need not ask if the doctor is in. He can't hear or smell her. But he does catch a unique scent, one distinctly not human. Not unusual around these parts, but it still garners notice.

He sets the crate down. "You're Nadine's new apprentice."

She'd mentioned something about that.

[ Her reasons for meeting with Eddie in Nocwich is two fold: one, there was no real, reliable delivery system between the factions and she wanted to ensure that his gift got to him, and two, an impulse had overcome her that night on the Arcanis, one that she hadn't entirely thought all the way through.

Truthfully, she still isn't sure that day as she makes her way off the ship and into Oleuni Square that she'll go through it. And if she was planning on chickening out, Eddie probably isn't the person that she should be bringing it up with, let alone mentioning it in the presence of. But that seems very much like a future her problem.

She makes her way to the portal awaiting his arrival and when he does arrive, she perks up. ]

i. circus of the sciences (cadens)

[Viktor debuts his latest invention at the festival of illumination, setting up with Hilda outside of Portam hall, squaring up against the other inventors. He’s cleaned up for once, wearing a new waistcoat that hasn’t yet been marred by engine grease, and he’s foregone his crutch in favor of exoskeleton-like leg braces that help him stand straight and unaided, the magic carved into the struts activating with a slight metallic creak when he walks. Despite his attempts, his bearing hints that he’s not necessarily comfortable, being the one in the spotlight and doing all the talking. Still, he does his best.

The presentation is an automaton, which, when Hilda casts her unseen servant spell into the hulking metal chassis, shudders to life. They guide it through a series of simple tasks, everything from walking, to moving boxes, to fine articulation of its hands and fingers. Hilda does the instructing, and Viktor explains to the gathered crowd.]

Right now, it is dependent on the spell. However, the proof of concept is sound, and as we further refine the technology, our goal is to develop a truly autonomous construct. Imagine what we might do, with something like this at the Academy. Interaction with hazardous materials, operation in underwater or low-oxygen environments, tasks that humans cannot otherwise perform. All on its own, using its own judgement—its own intelligence—based on the instruction it is given!

[He pointedly avoids the topic of the mines, but reading between the lines isn’t exactly difficult. Once Aleksander has provided his feedback and moved on to other projects, Viktor invites others to approach for a closer look. When instructed, the construct gives a little wave in greeting, and then extends a hand, as if to shake.]

Go ahead. [Now that the formal presentation part is over, he smiles, genuinely, looking between you and the outstretched metal palm of the automaton. For those most accustomed to his subdued demeanor, Viktor is positively beaming, clearly very proud.] It’s perfectly safe.

[In fact, it seems to want to say hello.]

ii. rio enterprises (cadens, aquila)

[They don’t win the contest—he doesn’t expect to, given the fact that it might look like favoritism, but Viktor is pleased with their showing nonetheless. They’ve intrigued investors, and Klingel seemed pleased, so Viktor considers that a win. In the aftermath, he brings the automaton back to the workshop, where he hosts an open house of his own, inviting locals and Summoned alike to stop by his base of operations and inquire about current projects.

The workshop itself—both the main operation in Cadens and the smaller shop in Aquila—is organized chaos. Viktor seems to like working on multiple projects at once, with pieces of clockwork mechanisms littering the worktables, and the walls and bulletin boards plastered with notes and schematics. In addition to Viktor’s personal projects, he offers all manner of tools and equipment for artisans and monster hunters, everything from a handheld gyroscopic laser cutter to night vision goggles that wick away moisture, to respirators for the desert. If nothing strikes your fancy, he and his team are always available for custom commissions.

Right now, in between further demonstrations of the automaton and his other inventions, Viktor answers questions from interested investors. He may not have landed the government grant, but private money is good too, right? That said—he’s not cut out for this, and as soon as he’s given the opportunity to extricate himself from the situation (whether that means his guests are finished, or one of his employees takes over), he does so, moving on to the next visitor.]

Primary Settlement

Goodness but Solvunn is certainly festive and full of good cheer for Yule! Or Winter Solstice, he supposes, that's what they seem to call it here. It's...well, it's quite nice, really. Yule in Wellington Wells was like everything else there. Empty and hollow and all for show and strangely invaded by ancient traditions. It was lights and ribbons and the same meaningless gifts that were given every year, motions gone through Just Because. There was no heart. It was a barren thing devoid of any depth.

Like he had been. Like they all were.

But this...

The season means something here. Arthur can see it in the eyes of every Solvunnite he encounters. And every time they so earnestly press a little gift or treat into his hands. The way he's treated - how all Summoned are treated here - still makes him feel awkward, but...well. Social pressure is social pressure, and he knows better than to try and protest or refuse.

So you may find him struggling with an armload of things, little packages and jars and knitted things piled to his chin. He's desperate to make it home without anything more being added to the small mountain he's precariously transporting.

What's he going to do with it all?

And of course there's the Blessing of Light. Which Arthur is perfectly happy to participate in, though worried about getting it wrong. These sorts of things are very important in these types of communities. Things need to be done right. It's one similarity between here and there, the life he'd left behind. Things are done in very certain ways. And he only somewhat grasps what this is all about. The big magic rock getting sad this time of year, or something.

But he has a bit of wood for lighting things aflame. He has a vague concept of the ritual he's been asked to participate in. But he hesitates, looking for another one of the Summoned who may be a bit more experienced in this sort of thing...

"Er...." he asks. "How terrible is it if we accidentally mess this up?"


Secondary Settlement

They do love their goats here, don't they? Arthur is observing the Goat of All Tidings curiously. He's heard of catching pigs smeared with lard as a party game, but this is something new. And seems less a game and more part of religious observance. How fascinating!

The kissing bit he's not sure about. It seems maybe less than hygienic? But that's the custom...and they do say that not kissing the goat can bring bad fortune, and Arthur would rather not invite bad fortune. He's had more than enough of that for ten lifetimes, thank you. He could certainly use good luck....

Still.

"Looks rather fast, doesn't it? One can never underestimate goats. They can take down trolls and wolves, you know. And Germans, according to Uncle Jack."

The Germans were always the villains in all of Uncle Jack's stories.


Tertiary Settlement

It's only because it's the holiday that Arthur is here. It seems to be quite the event, and Summoned seemed expected to participate in events. The last thing he wants is to seem like a spoilsport. Or worse.

They're not even expecting him to do anything awful. Some of it has been strange, but all of it in the spirit of wintertime festivities.

Then there's this.

It's madness. It's dangerous! The water has to be absolutely freezing! And there's currents and....and things! There's bound to be things in the water. Sea serpents or...or...kraken! Though he's not sure if there's any difference between those things. It hardly matters, the point stands.

"They can't really be serious! It's...it's some sort of jokes on us....isn't it?"


Nocwich

It is, in fact, Arthur's first visit to this....particularly odd land. The darkness is disorienting, that sense of nighttime no matter when it is. Isn't that the sort of thing that happens at the poles? He thinks he read that somewhere. Maybe. He still doesn't trust his memories.

But there's so much to see! He feels a bit like a gawking tourist...but then again, he is one. And looks the part, wide eyed and mouth hanging open as he wanders about. The marketplace and stage hold his attention for a bit, and he can't pass up proper roasted chestnuts, and he does enjoy a good show. Even if he has no cultural references for any of it.

But it's The Arcanis that takes most of his time. What a ship! With such amazing amenities! A spa! He's only ever heard of those! And gaming rooms! What a lark!

He's eager to have a go at everything!

Having said that, Arthur is a scrawny little guy who looks like he's easy to fuck with. Ed is equal parts bored and looking for a distraction from his on-and-off state of melancholy brought on by the heartbreak of being separated from Stede, which never leads to the best decisions. Ethically speaking, that is. Entertainment-wise, his decisions are always fantastic.

He strolls up to Arthur and claps him on the back. "Nah, they're dead serious, mate. See, look—" He points at someone's bare arse. "She's doing it. I bet you could do it, too."

[ Once a commonly-seen friendly face around the castle (some might say overbearing or nosy, but don't tell him that), Rhy has been conspicuously absent the last few weeks. Along with his adopted brother Kell, he's moved into a house in Old Nott; this is no secret, and it's easy enough to learn that Rhy is acting now as Crown-appointed liaison between Castle Thorne and Nott.

As such, he's... very busy. Leading up to the celebrations, Rhy can be seen in the castle proper or the castle town as often as in Nott, but it's harder to catch him free enough to chat on most occasions, since he tends to be meeting with people and making arrangements leading up to the Feast of the New Dawn, which he's helping to organize. Sometimes, though, he might be found alone, somewhere a little more secluded -- around the corner of a building away from the crowds, in a less-used castle hallway, or sitting by himself at the back of a tavern. He might even look pained, fist over his heart, a little winded, or a little too drunk.

During the AWAKENING OF MAGICKS, Rhy is present and polite -- a bit subdued, to those who know him, but dressed, as always, to impress. He makes a point to greet and thank the various castle staff whom he's gotten to know from his stay in the castle before, and mingle with the aristocracy enough to be seen and make smalltalk. At the end of the night, he casts his firelight and watches the lit-up tree for quite some time. Somehow, there's always a drink in his hand, but someone who's paying attention might notice he's forgotten about the food. After the party, he might just accidentally fall asleep on a bench somewhere in the garden, while the crowd disperses.

When it comes time for THE FEAST OF THE NEW DAWN, Rhy appears more host than guest. Here, he's dressed a bit more simply, with a fur-lined red cloak to ward off the winter chill. He will stop by to make sure cups are filled, plates of food are full, and everyone is having fun. He can also be seen checking in on the folks who are helping serve and prepare the food, or enthusiastically praising a baker here, a brewer there, on what a fine job they've done. Eventually, he may need to be reminded to sit down and actually relax a minute himself.

When he's not running around, Rhy can (and probably should) be convinced to go on a sleigh ride, though hopefully you're not too embarrassed to be recognized by the locals if you go with him. He's also never been ice skating -- maybe someone can teach him how? And even though he's not living in the castle anymore, at some point, he might just try to find a reason to go to the luxurious baths. Anyone looking to relax together is welcome. ]

Urianger Augurelt ✨ Death ✨ Thorne

✨ THORNE • SLEIGH QUEEN.

( Now, what's not to love about the prospect of a sleigh ride and a cup of mulled wine?

Urianger's usual calm, collectedness is briefly disrupted by the seasonal event: he seems positively delighted by the idea of such an afternoon spent out on the snow. He's heard tell of exquisite views and an unparalleled seasonal whimsy by those who have already taken the trip out, and the rows of prettily decorated sleighs certainly add to the novelty of it all.

Dressed warmly (for once — his stubbornness in Geralt's domain wasn't worth it in the end), Urianger patiently awaits his turn with a cup of mulled wine that soon becomes a second cup, then a third ...

Until by the time he's instructed to board a sleigh he's extremely pink-cheeked and seems to be walking with a slight sway. Oh, yes, this one truly cannot handle his drink, which might explain why he very nearly trips and spills his wine onto the person sharing his journey. Forutnately, he just manages to catch both himself and his drink in time: )

Ah — mine apologies, it seems my footing was unsecure.

( He chuckles warmly, the flush in his cheeks intensifying just a little. )

We are to be ... sleigh-mates, are we not?

✨ THORNE • LITTLE STAR.

( Urianger plans his contribution to the Dimming festivities well in advance. There are certain permissions he needs from the Astronomy Department — props he needs to borrow — as well as musicians to interview, a costume to have tailored, refreshments to offer his audience, and as the days pass his vision begins to take shape among the various piles scattered across the small home he shares with Thancred.

The night of the storytelling sees a small stage erected in one of Thorne's squares, the beams of wood wrapped in swathes of mignight blue material. Urianger himself has opted for a disguise of sorts: yes, in may ways it's quite obviously him, but the point of the evening is to allow his audience to focus on the stories as opposed to the person telling them. By the time darkness falls the stage is illuminated by softly glowing pinpricks of light, and when the audience quietens down Urianger begins his tales.

The stories span the myths he's learned of Abraxas, the Arcanum, and the constellations and their characters, the experience made all the more immersive by the talent of the musicians. Slender hands pull down the starlight, form it into images that flit and glitter around the stage, the moving illustrations helping him to narrate each tale as he spins each twinkling yarn.

By the end, Urianger is warm-cheeked and a little breathless from magical exertion, but his heart is full from having shared his tales with natives and Summoned alike. )

✨ THORNE • AWAKE ME UP INSIDE.

( Of course, Urianger attends the Awakening of Magicks. The Enchanted Gardens are draw enough alone for him to join in the ceremony; the enchanted gardens are beautiful beneath the twinkle of magic and decoration, the evening unmarred by the tradition of a mage's sacrifice. He spends the majority of the evening mingling, picking at the fantastic spread of food and drink, and will always pause to greet a face he recognises whether closely acquainted or not.

There is, however, a slight ulterior motive to his actions. Urianger's experiments to contact the Fey have gone wholly unanswered — the very best he's managed to achieve was a singed face and and unpleasant, smokey smell, which means he's ready to shelve the more traditional methods of contacting the Feywilds and try something more political.

He needs his face known to the aristocrats and politicians of Thorne; needs to appear at the right places at the right time with the right words upon his lips. The Awakening of Magicks is one such time, and so he sweeps his hair into an elegant bun and dresses in the finest robes he owns so as to make a good impression.

By the final ceremony of the evening he's feeling pleasantly full, as well as pleasantly rejuvinated in a way he can't quite place, and the firelight dancing in his palm illuminates a calm smile as they look towards the tree. )

✨ NOCWICH • MIRROR, MIRROR.

( Urianger has always enjoyed gift-giving. There's no part of the process that doesn't fill him with pleasure: considering his companions' interests; taking the time to peruse markets, stalls, and boutiques in search of the perfect gift; wrapping and decorating each parcel to suit the tastes of the person receiving it ... In many ways he would describe it as somehow meditative — an opportunity to reflect on the people whose lips he would see lifted into a smile.

As such, the Dimming is as the Starlight Festival was back on his home Star of Hydaelyn. When the opportunity arises to visit the markets of Oleuni Square he takes it with both hands: here he's bound to find something amusing to gift Himeka, or elegant to gift Lord John, or perhaps something amusing and charming for Astarion.
He glides through the stalls, pausing here and there to admire a trinket or sniff at some incense, the satchel at his hip growing heavier with each gift bought.

He's reaching for an attractive hand-mirror decorated with lilies — a slightly tongue-in-cheek gift for Himeka, perhaps — when his hand brushes that of another patron apparently reaching for the same thing. )

Ah — mine apologies.

( He chuckles lightly as he gestures towards the mirror. )

[ twice now, river has been able to don a space suit and stand on the hull of serenity, with nothing but fabric and glass to protect her from the vacuum of space. folks like her brother can't see past the black, look into the void and see nothing but a vast emptiness. it can make a man existential about his place in the universe - but river had never seen something so beautiful, the irrefutable proof that there is so much more to creation than their mortal minds can grasp.

she thought that was it, the closest one could get to being able to reach for the stars with their own hands. but this performance presents a vision of the galaxy that feels impossible - that is impossible, if not for the fact of magic. river is still struggling to accept that magic is indeed a fact and not a fantasy, but this - to see the stars come to life, to hear their stories and watch them dance across the stage - is too magnificent for her to deny.

magic is real. and it is beautiful.

by the end of urianger's performance, river finds herself with tears rolling down her cheeks; a quiet overwhelm, an emotion she can't quite name spilling out of her. as other viewers stand to give enthusiastic applause, as they begin to filter out into the streets or otherwise swing by the stage to give urianger their praise, she stays rooted in her seat and simply stares at him with wide eyes. she just... watches him, even after his tales end, until she's one of the last people remaining in the square, still seated with stars in her eyes. ]

Primary Settlement

Julia is proud that she's now finished her private shrine to Endrborrin behind the orchardist's house that she was permitted to make. It is small but the butterfly is beautifully crafted into the stone and it is completely lit up with spring and summer flowers alive like they're in a different season. She happily puts a candle on it herself as part of the season.

After that, she can be seen willingly lighting candles around the settlement with her fire spell, since the Dimming doesn't affect the Summoned. She seems to have no problem doing this and collecting the bone charms left behind as that seems to be the custom.


Second Settlement

Julia has been visiting the second settlement regularly since she arrived to go to Endrborrin's official shrine, and she visits again while the celebrations are happening. She checks on the shrine to reinvigorate the beautiful alive flowers she's planted along it as her silent request for the goddess' attention. She can be found there on her knees, praying or simply organizing the flowers again.

After that, she joins in on the snowdrop flowers bouquet making, seemingly very comfortable handling them and tying them up with a nice ribbon. Julia helps the locals finish them so they can give them out, but she also might offer someone she knows a bouquet with a smile.

Tertiary Settlement

This is definitely Julia's favorite part, which is a surprise to her as she'd never been to the settlement. But she is very excited to take part in Xeimer's Plunge! She wears shorts and a shirt, not wanting to strip down more than that, but when they tell people to go, she runs straight into the water, laughing and giving a little scream when she dives into it. She doesn't often feel cold these days, but this gives her a nip and it's delightful! She goes back into the water more than once, enjoying the thrill. She may splash someone or encourage them to go into the water with her.

Afterward she enjoys hot cider by the bonfire, although she barely seems to need the blanket, holding it like she's doing it more for appearances than anything else. Julia's in a great mood and may chatter at people around the fire or seem very open to starting conversations or talking about the holiday going on.

Sansa has not yet done magic other than a few attempts at the welcoming feast and accessing the Horizon so when they are taught a spell for the Dimming, she welcomes the chance to learn it. It's a valued skill here and one that she'll learn and learn well. There are other things to do before the ceremony, though, so Sansa avails herself of one of the sleigh rides and the mulled wine and for a moment, just a moment, it feels like the Winterfell of her childhood.

She has to share with someone else, naturally, and she makes polite conversation with them but her real fascination is the gardens that have been decorated like a forest for the ceremony and when the day comes, she is excited to cast the spell that sends light toward the tree and watch it join everyone else's lights.

Frozen ponds are no strange sight for Sansa, hailing from Winterfell, but what is strange is the concept of tying blades to your boots to glide across them. She cannot swim and has forded a river so close to freezing it might as well have been ice but this will be sliding atop the ice. She might never want to do this as a girl, not wanting to muss her dress or her hair, but she is a new woman now and willing to try something she never would before.

She isn't perfectly graceful at first but it comes to her like dancing, balancing on these narrow blades, and she is able to go fairly fast after a while. Stopping isn't as easy, though, and she bumps into a few people as she tries to get the hang of it, apologizing profusely as she does.

"My apologies. I am learning."

Sansa has a bit of pocket money from having helped set up for the celebrations in Thorne and she intends to try to find a gift for Jon and a gift for Sandor at the Nocwich market. Jon will be easy; her brother rarely asks for anything and whatever she gets for him, he always seems to appreciate. He is kind and thoughtful and she has no fears that he will enjoy whatever trinket she gets him.

Sandor, however, hates everything and thinks gifts are frivolous so she's likely wasting her time. She cannot buy him a weapon so her obvious choice is gone and she doubts he'll be pleased with socks made of werewolf fur or jewelry. It's going to be a process.

She's drawn to the flowers again, this time in glowing bouquets, and while this is the most useless gift of all it might be the one. Jon's gift is a little wooden wolf pendant. It doesn't look like Ghost or the House Stark direwolf but it is a wolf, something to link them together, and Sansa buys herself one that matches.

And then she buys the flowers.

It's River's first time ice-skating as well, and just like Sansa, she seems to pick up a natural grace for it the more practice she gets. It feels like dancing but a little dangerous and all the more exciting for it.

She's all smiles as she glides across the ice, and when she notices Sansa gaining her balance and speed, River makes her way over to try to skate beside her. It's a bit tricky with the differences in their height and stride, but she manages it well enough to call out to her.

"Piàoliang de bù fǎ! Have you tried spinning yet?"

There's no competition or brag about it; River only just learned it and wonders if Sansa will pick it up quickly too. As if to show her how, River bites her tongue between her lips and concentrates as she skates ahead, does a careful circle, and then wobbles just a little to find her balance again so she can skate backwards to face Sansa with a bright, encouraging smile.

Salves & Stitches

The clinic is decked out for the holiday. Nadine simply went to work one afternoon to find it that way. You may find her standing outside, admiring the lights and decorations that adorn the outside. She knows it's Julie's doing, and she's glad to see it. The younger woman is subdued this winter - and for good reason. But the decorations look amazing, as they always do.

Between appointments and customers, Nadine is working on her and Cadfael's charity project. There's a sign outside advertising a charity drive for local orphans, requesting toys, treats, or monetary donations for the procuring of. The rest of the year she donates medicine and medical care, but it's the holidays. The holidays, whatever form they take, are for treats and special things. She remembers what it was like, as a kid in a children's home, relying on donations from businesses and individuals. She'll welcome any help - whether it be donations, or another pair of hand putting the baskets together.

Considering the amount of charity efforts this month, she's sure the children of the Free Cities will have a very happy holiday.

And of course she's open for medical needs and purchases as usual.


Aquila

A year ago and Nadine wouldn't have ever imagined herself as the sort of person expected to attend a formal gala. Between her own minor fame and Jaskier's not-so-minor, she's found herself with invitations to exclusive parties. Enthusiastic invitations. And offers of designer fashion to wear to them.

It's like being a celebrity.

Of course to the most prominent galas she attends with Jaskier, she wears a gown made by Jesper and Hilda. The invitations and offers made her feel like a celebrity, the gown makes her feel like a red carpet celebrity. It really is funny, how she's ended up in this sort of life - well off, influential, well known and respected - just by trying to do the right things and going to medical school.

She'd always wanted to be someone. How could she not, when she'd been told since she was a kid that she'd be a queen someday? But that...well. That sure hadn't worked out, and never really would have. She knows that.

But here...

Despite difficult times in the last month or so, she's feeling light and in good spirits at the few galas she attends. While she attends with Jaskier, she's not glued to his side the entire time. But arriving on his arm gives her that same sense of celebrity - of course it does, he's a famous musician and certainly the most well known Summoned in the Free Cities. It's heady and thrilling and a part of her really, really enjoys it. Both being known and being with someone known.

It's no surprise she makes it a point to attend the Gala of Illumination, decked out in the dress from Jesper and Hilda and an elaborate braid woven through with red roses and green leaves. She's eager to dance, or simply chat and watch the partygoers while enjoying a drink. Or stepping out for a smoke - she's brought plenty of Vegas Botanicals herbal cigarettes. Why not promote the brand a little?


Libertas

Considering the success of the charity drive that Salves & Stitches held, Nadine has plenty of goodies and small toys to donate to the charity taking place in Libertas. She joins the other volunteers, and can be found handing out toys and sweets or sitting with a group of little ones around her while she tells a story. She's not much of a performer, but her years as an elementary school teacher have made her an excellent teller of stories.

It's really easy to alter the fairy tales she knows to fit a Free Cities audience. Just set everything in the desert or mountains. The Brave Little Tailor is proving very popular. It had always gone over well with her students. But it is hard work, and strains her voice after a while. She wouldn't mind an excuse to take a little break....

Considering how active Nadine has been in regards to charity this season, there's no chance she'd miss the Liberty Charity Auction. She's donated a basket of various bath salts and oils, made in her clinic, and has brought a hefty coin purse to bid on some items. She may not be able to afford any of the big ticket stuff, but she thinks she can walk away with something pretty neat. Maybe a holiday gift or two - it's all to help the kids, after all. She'd considered helping out, but....

It's the holidays. She needs a break, to. So she's just here to enjoy herself and throw money at charity for a change. Besides, she can't miss seeing how the bidding goes for what Jaskier's putting up for auction.

The Doctor had been here before, though it's been a bit, back before their time in the Nether. He could technically calculate down to the second just how long, but then just as often, he loses track of time, especially when it moves linearly and (for him) out of order. He'd enjoyed the atmosphere and what he'd seen of it, particularly the Halloween-themed decorations when he'd last been here with Julie. Here again, it doesn't disappoint, keeping up with the festivities and decked out accordingly. The note about a charity drive also draws him closer, of course.

Stepping inside, the Doctor knocks on the door hinge and then calls out softly, "Hello! Couldn't help myself stopping in, the place looks grand. Really — well done!" He steps further inside now, beaming with excitement.

"You're doing a charity drive? How can I help? Put me to work. I've got two fully-functioning hands which actually amount to four hands when you catch me on a good day. And today is a good day, of course!"

And then he actually...pauses. At last!

[As if the open invitation to his domain was not enough, Jaskier has sent special embossed letters to those he fled from Thorne with, specifically stating they were expected to get together at Bleobheris for a special event.

The event? The four of them. Together.

With wine. And food.

Bleobheris and his glade have been appropriately decorated. What once was an eternally summery glade is now coated with a fresh layer of snow. The air chills, and breaths come out like clouds of dragon's smoke, but just inside the door of the great oak is a roaring fire that has heated it to a comfortable degree. Lines of greenery line the hearth and spiral up the stairs' railing. Two moogles -- one the usual Moglad, dressed up in a furred coat, and a second that looks strangely like Geralt, if one should squint, veiled in a ratty old black cloak with a hood pulled over his head and pom, who leans against the back wall and keeps the fire going -- occupy the room. The jewelwisps have got to hibernate, and there is only the faint call of owls in the distance.

And, to the side, is a large bed made of sheep's wool, where the wolf that usually haunts Geralt's Kaer Morhen rests, its large head laying on giant paws. A table is set up in the middle, with an entire host of roasted meats, and unopened bottles of wine, of steaming pierogi and broiled fish stews. Jaskier has intended it to be a gathering of nearly perfect proportions... the only thing he's refrained from is leaving name cards at each place setting.

Jaskier is as sunny as the Arcana he often bears, carrying the tiny morbol that now lives in his domain in his arms, seemingly also dressed for the occasion.] Welcome, welcome! Get your asses in here, it's bitter cold!

While in the castle, Kell is polite, but withdrawn as he usually is. While he'll enjoy a sleigh ride with good company, he's not hiding the fact he does not live in the castle anymore. Being proud as he's always been, it take little to convince him to present a demonstration of his magic. Which only shows, that he might deny it, but he's no less of a showman as Rhy.
It won't escape a keen eye that while he's being recognized no less than other Summoned of note, he's more often asked about the book he wrote than his magic. With the most common question being predictably: is there going to be a new one soon? to which he responds that indeed, he is working on a new project.
Kell is present at the casting of the firelight doing his part as he's expected to.
He would, however, politely but firmly decline any proposition of trip to Borrel. Explaining that he's very busy before the Feast of New Dawn, if pressed for reasons.
The one thing that he is enthusiastically (don't quote him on this, he'd deny) taking part in (after being bullied into a role) is the play of "The Saint and the Sectary".

( despite his increasing restlessness with thorne, he can't deny that he feels a little lighter with the festivities going on. he likes being able to be around others, new and old, and he likes being able to find connections within groups that he hadn't had before. there's the personal aspect of that where he just tends to like most people and the professional aspect where the more people he knows, the better informed he'll be.

but he's not really on any kind of spy mission when he's enjoying the sleigh rides. no, this is purely for fun and he tries to invite and persuade those that might be waiting alone to join him. he thinks it's hard to resist someone like himself so he'll make space for anyone that wants to partner up and enjoy a ride.

later, you might find him at a more vulnerable state, trying to learn magic. this is supposed to be the most basic of skills and it's stumping him, turning him irritable when he definitely doesn't want to be.

but, he's not giving up. he has to let go of his insecurity about the whole magic thing and just learn.

he's just annoyed that it's not coming easily to him. )

( even though matt can't see, that doesn't keep him away from the show involving alexander klingel and his rods. he wasn't here for the last time this man had come to town and, when he'd heard the word experiments, he'd become intrigued. it seems to all be in good fun but matt stays the entire show, sitting near the back and listening for any signs that this might turn untoward.

later, you'll be able to find him in a light up carriage, having been coerced by someone nearby. it's not really his style or his scene but the ride is pretty nice, he has to admit even if he can't remember the last time he really celebrated the winter holidays.

but, he finds himself relaxing, sitting back and just enjoying the cold. it's nice, reminds him of home in a way. )
