[ she does in fact want him to tell her how to play, the rules and how-tos, because she likes to be prepared, though she does understand the importance sometimes of learning via immersion. it takes all kinds of education to succeed!! ]
[ but then he has to go and end it on that note about skill. annabeth, with no idea of the rules or how to play in the slightest but suddenly full of determination about this mystery game, replies with full confidence: ] I will be good at it. I'm great at thinking on my toes.
[ please make it intense. she will thrive, once she really does get the hang of it. ]
[ the laugh barely fazes her. ]
Well. Yeah. It kind of is. They think we smell like lunch.

[ He grins, and it’s clear that he can appreciate that sort of outlook. Most of the people who lined Hellfire back home already knew how to play, or had been dragged in to play by their friends previously. They just needed to adjust to Edie’s house rules—the things he added, the things the threw out, things he allowed, things he didn’t. Here, he’s been playing with a lot of full on beginners and not one of them has approached with Annabeth’s immediate confidence and determination.
But the whole monster thing…man. He still struggles with one week’s worth. He can’t imagine it being a regular thing. ]
Man, that…that sucks.
[ From his perspective, at least. He did end up as lunch, after all. ]
What kind of monsters are we talking? If you don’t mind sharing, that is.

I told you. You just have to let me know when the next game is. Can I drag my boyfriend too? [ percy will definitely be bored. but she's gonna try. ]
[ annabeth unexpectedly lets out a dry puff of a laugh. yeah. yeah, he's right, and sometimes she is very tired of fighting monsters! it's weirdly nice to acknowledge it, however simple the statement. ]
It does suck, actually, even when you're used to it.
[ there's a small pause. ] Do you know anything about Greek mythology? Think those sorts of creatures.

[ He tries to keep up appearances that he still runs a tight ship, but he’s mellowed out a lot. He kind of had no other choice. Who knew that being patient and open to beginners would allow him to pull more people into than game than ever? The fact he managed to get Steve Harrington to play more than one game is something he can and will rub in Dustin’s face for an eternity.
While he doesn’t purposefully try to kill peoples’ characters off anymore, if someone shows up uninterested, he’s prepared to pull out the big guns to put them and everyone else out of their misery. ]
Not a whole lot, admittedly? They made me read the Odyssey in freshman year—so all of that, I guess. And, uh, that Zeus is kind of a freak, something about a three headed dog, minotaur in a labyrinth, and Will’s dad making some of the best haikus I’ve ever heard.
[ Special shoutout to Apollo. Someone appreciates your haikus… ]
But yeah, I get it. My world has some nasty monsters too. Just didn’t know about them until recently which is really kind of messed up, but hey—ignorance is bliss.

[ she wants percy along for what are probably silly and maybe a little traumatized reasons, but given it's also just a game, she's gonna do her best to win it. even if it means percy loses. ]
[ she wrinkles her nose. ] The haikus are lame. But Zeus is definitely a freak. [ gods she loves being able to speak freely here. ] I've met Cerberus the dog, he's more friendly than you'd think, and the Minotaur's popped up twice in the last few years. All the monsters and creatures and people of the Odyssey are real for me, but it did happen a very long time ago. Monsters just... keep coming back.
[ she frowns a little, in sympathy. ] Most regular people don't know they're real back home either, and they usually stick to attacking demigods. Sorry your world is stuck with them too.

[ He raises his eyebrows, all wide-eyed like he can’t believe she’d feel any differently. And he hasn’t even met Apollo! All the haikus he’s heard have been through Will relaying them secondhand. And sure, technically, maybe they are a little lame, but they’re funny and unexpected and Eddie has a certain level of respect for a guy who isn’t afraid to wax poetically about toilets in seventeen syllables. ]
Sounds like someone is just jealous of an immense amount of talent.
[ He jokes, but he can tell Annabeth is going to be the perfect D&D player. Driven, interested, and she’s got the whole actual-experience-killing-monsters thing under her belt. Real life experience is far from required, but he’s found that it definitely adds a certain spark.
Monsters just keep coming back, though—that doesn’t afford him a whole lot of optimism. She’s talking about her world, sure, but there’s a ton of shit here that wants to kill them too, after all, and then there’s everything he left back home.]
Yeah, me too.
[ He snorts and turns on his heel to poke his nose into something else within the cabin—without permission, of course. ]
I kind of doubt I’m ever going back there, but—family and friends, you know? Pretty sure the monsters and shit didn’t just disappear because I did. I just wish I knew if they were okay.

I've heard better. He's the god of poetry. Where's the emotion in it? [ maybe she's more on artemis's side here. but maybe she just likes artemis - she's the one goddess who annabeth felt actually understood the world below olympus on a more connected level compared to her olympian family. ]
[ she frowns when he says he's not going back, not sure if he's simply resigned himself to it or if there's an actual reason. she's curious, but she doesn't feel like she knows him quite well enough to really pry, even if she wants to. instead she idly trails after him towards whatever he's peeking at now. ]
Some of my friends from home are from my future. It's weird to think about how that works and how much it might go on. The monsters probably aren't going anywhere.
