"In my world instant darkness has a way of getting people anxious." It may be she's never heard of the Darkling, but the fact he was just talking about someone who split his country into two made of darkness it's not hard to guess.

Jesper glances over at her, curious. "As much as someone can know a Saint. She was a hero for another country back home, Ravka. I wasn't aware other people knew her name." The 'was' can be interpreted any number of ways, that he didn't know her so he's using that term, or the correct interpretation, which is she's dead (as far as he knows). But it could be anything.
