[a little reluctantly, wanda pushes his hand away, settling it down on the space between them. she wants matt to focus, and she emphasizes once more, the palm of her hand open.]

Maybe 'favorite' isn't the right word. [hmm] Right now, if you could have one drink. What would it be? Can you imagine it into my hand? Don't burn my hand with just thinking about the coffee and not the cup if you do, okay?

( matt makes a face when he realizes what she's asking for and sighs, letting his hands drop to his sides. he tries to think of something that he'd want right now and tucks his hands into his pockets.

he sighs and closes his eyes behind his glasses before he thinks of —

orange juice. he doesn't know but that's what comes to mind and that's what appears in her hand, in a bottle and safely capped. )

I don't know if that's the drink I'd want right now so much as what came into my head.

[he's getting better at imagining things into his horizon, which is relatively an important thing to have—something about control and becoming familiarized with this when trying to use magic out in the real world.

it's a smaller bottle of orange juice, those packed to go for one person, and she looks it over curiously. the stickers are missing, but... can't be helped.]

But does it taste like orange juice?

[uncapping it, wanda sniffs it first before taking a small sip. immediately, her nose scrunches.]

That's pretty acidic.

[this proves a theory for her, though. she puts the cap back on.]

Food doesn't taste that great for you, does it?

Some of it does.

( he shrugs a shoulder. he doesn't go without eating because he can taste things so much more potently than others. there are some things he likes but he can taste when something's cooked wrong or spiced wrong. )

But I imagine what you just tasted isn't what you really taste when you have orange juice but it's what I taste so it's stronger.

( because everything was stronger or sharper to him. )

[she gets it. matt imagines the world within his limitations and understanding of the world, so it makes sense that the walls of this place seem a little more bare than what wanda thinks it would actually be. no actual words or posters to display, and—while certainly eerie without context—makes an extravagant amount of sense.

standing straight, wanda walks around the table of his office and sits down on what would be his chair. she pushes it closer to the table and makes if she's looking around the papers.]

Right, have a seat.

[it's her office now]

( matt raises an eyebrow at that and then moves around, feeling out for the chair that clients typically sit in. he slides into the seat and then leans back, unbuttoning in jacket and sitting back. )

Are you the boss now?

( he can't see her but he imagine she looks like a natural behind his desk, in charge of things. )

[wanda tries keeping a straight face for a moment, embody this 'boss' persona, but she honestly can't—snorting and smiling wide.]

Feels like I'm being judged up here. [she tries to find comfort on the chair a bit more] Don't know how you do it.

[but, in any case, she grabs at the maritime law book she had picked out from the shelf, opening it again on a random page.]

How do you read this? I mean— is each dot a letter or do different dots make a word?

Different combinations of dots make different words. They're not all individual letters because that would take forever to both create and read.

( he'd started out like that, reading letters until he'd gotten better and better at recognizing braille. )

I can't really explain how I do it because I just do it. It took me awhile to get to where I could read it quickly.

[she looks curiously at the book as matt explains. she traces a finger over one line, trying to take note of the different bumps and see if there is anything she can make any obvious differentiation from. it's a lot much difficult than what she anticipated it would be, so she shifts her attention at him, resting her head against her hand.]

You did university like this? [not that it was ever in doubt how intelligent matt is (or isn't), but it's just... a little impressive.] You listened to tapes too, I think you mentioned that.

Do you just have really good memory? You can't take notes, can you?

I can take notes and I do take notes. I wasn't always blind, remember. I knew how to write before this happened to me so when I listen to recordings or read, I write down things I want to remember.

( he shrugs, nodding at some of the files on the desk, papers tucked inside adorned with matt's handwriting. )

It's not the neatest handwriting but it's mine. But you're probably wondering how I read them. I can convert them to braille if I have to.

[she follows the nod of his head towards the files, picks them out to see his— yup, that's his handwriting; a little messy, not really sticking to the lines on the page, but it's legible.

it's good that he answers her question before she voices it.]

Cool.

[the intricacy of the process belies the effort he must have underwent to get this done, to really go through with his education. 'cool' she says, but she's relatively impressed at his dedication, even if it's completely normal for him to do things this way at this point.

she sets the papers back into the file she took it from.]

What would your name look like in braille?

Oh, uh —

( matt reaches for a pad on the corner of his desk and then a pen. he scrawls a series of dots on the paper, a combination that he knows well. she won't really be able to see any similarity between it and letters but he turns it towards her anyway. )

This is Matt.

( he shrugs. )

Want to see your name?

[he is right about that; she cannot see how any of these dots equate to 'matt', but she tries to find the logic in it regardless. she reaches his hand for the pen he used, brings the pad closer to herself, and writes out the series of dots on the line below.

maybe she'll figure out a pattern.

at his question, wanda looks up again with a smile, handing him pen and pad back.]

I would love to.

( he takes the pad and pen back, finding a spot underneath his name so he can write out hers. it's longer than his, of course, and still probably incomprehensible but she might find some similarities in the 'a' at least since both their names have that.

he passes it back to her. )

That's your name.

[she takes the pad when he passes it over, grabbing for the pen as an afterthought as her eyes focus on the dots, working out the pattern— ah, there it is.

drawing a circle between the single top-most dot on both names, wanda thinks she can see how this works.]

So, this one dot is an 'a'. [she draws a square on the 'm', triangles for the two 't' in his name; a star, a hexagon, and a half moon for the rest of the letters in her name. she's muttering under her breath, checking to see if this makes sense.] Oh, then it's just...

[on the bottom of the page, she writes down the alphabet as she knows it and starts filling out the letters she has been given with their names.

she reaches for his hand, palm up, and presses down her finger against his skin—three dots first, then three right next to them.]

There are six spaces in total for each letter, but each one fills out a specific number. Once you know that, you kind of know what to expect.

[big geometry moves here. she raises her head up at matt.]

Can you teach me the rest?

You seem to be doing just fine on your own.

( matt's been listening to her figure out the braille, make deductions, parse out the way things are written with an easy smile on his face.

once she remembers that he's there and looks back up, he's laughing. )

I can but it's not something you can learn in one go. Why don't we table that? I'll teach you though if you really want to learn. I don't know if there's much use for braille here. I don't even know if it exists here.

I want to learn it.

[she says quickly, before matt thinks they ought to table this for now. what does it matter if it's not that useful here? to be fair, she's not blind, but— he is.]

I won't learn it in one day, I'll probably be as bad as you with runes. [a general wave of her hand.] But if you tell me the rest of the alphabet I can practice.

[her lips thin into a line.]

I could send you letters if I did learn.

Hey, I'm not that bad with runes.

( she'd given him a silver star for his efforts but matt sighs and leans forward, reaching for the pad and paper again. when he leans back, he props the pad on his knee and starts writing.

this takes a little while because he has to draw out the braille and then underneath, the letter that it corresponds too. the office is quiet, no ambient sounds of new york filtering in though he can hear her breathing and he listens to it while he writes.

once he's done, he hands it back to her. )

It's going to take you awhile to write letters like this but you can at least get familiar with some things. You can write your name and mine or whatever else you want.

[though matt sighs, wanda smiles—because he acquiesces and pulls the pad back toward himself. he sits, all nonchalant and careful as he indulges her request. wanda leans against the table, just watching him work; the way his brow creases in concentration, how he pauses and tries to find the right place to put the tip of the pen.

all the while, she's quiet, and happily takes the pad back when he's done.]

I'm sure my magic will help me get it right.

[is this cheating? it doesn't matter, because wanda's ripping off the page from the pad and looking them over, thumbing over the print of matt's handwriting.]

I'll practice, and then you'll just have to wait for the mail, I guess.

[she won't be able to take this page out of the horizon with her, but she can use her magic to recall his writing. speaking of—]

Would you send me letters, some time?

I don't think I've written a letter in...years.

( he sounds a little amused at the concept but he supposes, with the way things are here, mail and written letters are still important. so, he nods. )

I'll write you some letters and send them to you. Hopefully my handwriting isn't too terrible and I don't bore you with what I decide to write about but — yeah, I can write you.

( regale her with stories about his fun life in cadens. )

[wanda's delight for something as silly as being able to send mail to others is perhaps one of the more trivial points of joy she's found in abraxas; the moment she realized it was possible, there was no coming back from it.

she hasn't really received anything back yet—not that she's expecting it—so matt saying he would—

well, it has her scooting to the edge of the chair and leaning on the table, arms crossed, in excitement.]

I've never gotten mail before.

[—geez]

I can send you something that's closer to Abraxan fashion too, by the way. I can't imagine you aren't drawing attention with your ties.

( well, now he's going to have to send her all kinds of letters when he hearse the excitement in her voice and can imagine her leaning forward, anticipation in every line of her body. he kind of wishes he could send her something right now.

but he was definitely going to write a letter after they left each other this time. )

Abraxan fashion? ( he's not sure he wants to know. he sits back and smooths a hand down his tie. ) This isn't fashionable?

It looks very good on you. [the combination of a simple tie on a white shirt, it's ridiculous how much matt makes it work.] But you can try blending in a little more.

It's very dry in Cadens, isn't it?

[with the desert and all that.]

I can send you a — [she gestures, putting her hands up around her head] a big hat.

[she's joking right now.]

I don't think I'd look very good in a hat, big or otherwise.

( he was more of a scarf or armored helmet around the head kind of guy. hat would just make him look foolish, he thinks. )

I think I'd stick with the suit and tie over a hat. I wear it better.

( maybe there was someone out there that could wear a hat well but he was not that person. )

[she tilts her head at that, because—]

A scarf?

[sometimes, matt lets down his mental defenses enough for wanda to be able to hear his thoughts, and that (and or armored helmet) sticks out to her. she pulls away from the chair, standing and walking around the table, to stand by him, her hands on his head, fingers brushing his hair down.

she leans down a bit.]

Do you want a scarf?
