( huh, he would not have guessed that. but, he doesn't know what he'd have guessed about this guy. )
So, you're some kind of science guy? Like...beakers and petri dishes and stuff like that? Experimenting on mice and making them have muscles so they're scary mice now?
no subject
Not exactly.
[The opposite is true. He is not terribly fond of scientists and researchers, actually.]
We worked with children. And my role was that of an orderly for several years.
no subject
( he forces a smile onto his face and nods because yes, kids were good. it's a façade because he's never been a fan even when he was a kid himself. )
What kinds of things were you doing with children in a laboratory? That sounds like you're trying to make them into super soldiers. Or maybe I just watched too many movies.
no subject
But for now-]
I don't know. You're right to be cynical when it comes to the government. [That doesn't quite answer the question, though. To be fair, the word "super soldier" was never thrown around; that was likely not the intent, but they were definitely being raised and taught and molded into tools to use against their so-called enemies.] The children in that place, though... They were special. They had abilities. Is that something unusual where you're from?
no subject
( nope, not at all. is that something he wants to give away just yet? no, it's not. so, he just shakes his head. )
No, we're all normal and boring where I come from. Just a bunch of people who don't lock our doors at night.
( not always untrue, even. )
What kind of abilities?
no subject
Not that Henry can do anything than take his word for it, of course. Normal, boring.]
The kind that uses the mind. [He raises a hand to tap at a temple, then drops it to rest on the railing again.] Moving objects without touching them... Telekinesis. That's the term they use in books and movies, right?
no subject
( iiiiiiiinteresting. the plot thickens. kai was already curious but he's even more so. )
That something you can do too?
no subject
Oh, no. I only worked there. I'd be under study, too, otherwise.
[A lying liar, is he.]
no subject
but, kai doesn't press because he can accept that at face value. sounds just fine to him. )
And no one wants to be studied, do they? Who signs up for a poking and prodding and all that blood work?
( movies showed him quite a bit. )
no subject
No one. [An easy answer. No point in sugar-coating that.] I once described that place as a prison, nevermind my status as an employee there. It wasn't far off the mark. If those kids were given a chance to leave... I believe they would have.
no subject
( he tilts his head to one side, curious. )
Prison break?
no subject
One girl did, actually. Escaped and never looked back. It's almost enviable.
no subject
( he wishes he could have done that in his prison world. he'd tried a variety of ways but —
no dice. )
Never saw her again?
no subject
[It's something he feels strangely about. Satisfaction at knowing one finally slipped under the lab's noses, while bitterness at not being able to leave himself.]
I guess it doesn't matter now. I won't ever be seeing her again in this place.
no subject
( seems to him that just about anyone from anytime can show up here. he surely hadn't expected it but here he was, ensconced in another prison world with cows.
he's not sure what he thinks about that. if he's really that cursed. )
Could be someone that walks right by you without you knowing.
no subject
Maybe. But it's hard to forget a frown like the one she wore.
no subject
( yes, he's known people like that. and he's not going to press the issue because now he's focused elsewhere and laughing. )
I've known people like that. Who you could go years without seeing but then they'd frown or cry or get all angry and stomp their foot and it was instantly like the years vanished.
no subject
An old friend?
no subject
( that's pretty vague but he doesn't care. he shrugs. )
No one like that is here for me. Lone wolf right here.
no subject
Well. You and me both. Though I hope you're willing to make new and exciting new acquaintances while you're here.
no subject
( for many reasons. at least henry's a little more interesting than most people he's met. he can appreciate that. )
You're the first one for me. Can't ever forget your first.
