Intro Log #2

It has been two months now since the initial group of summonings first took place. Castle Thorne, or at least the part above ground, is buzzing with a vibrant air of hope following the 'success' at the Singularity. Eager smiles and excited chattering are to be found in nearly every corner of the castle and surrounding town. The honored guests may find grateful looks turned their way more often than not. A new and brighter day seems to be dawning on the kingdom.

In the dungeons it's a different story entirely. The mood is somber and uneasy. The prisoner taken for trial has yet to return, and no word has come regarding her or her fate. There has been no mention of any further trials as of yet and guards seem to have little patience for unruly behavior or even conversation. Some seem to not even look at or acknowledge the prisoners at all.

[Ever since the return from Horizon - what a stupid name for something so profoundly amazing- Homelander has been in a great mood. The scent of home-made cookies and the swell of pride, fake as it was, carried with him through the days that came after.

He's taking a stroll through the castle, not doing much of anything and trying to not get too annoyed about the fact that he hasn't been summoned for a meeting at. Some kind of debrief or even sit-rep would be enough.

But someone, somewhere, were falling down on the job. But he can wait.

Turning a corner, he finds her - Nadine, the teacher from the apocalypse - with her hands over her face. He takes a small step forward.]

Hey.

[And she's not alone.

At least it's Homelander. Nadine pulls her hands away from her face and takes a deep breath, doing her best to settle herself.]

Hey, Homelander. Just...taking a minute.

[She doesn't know how else to explain what she's doing, and doesn't feel like admitting to holding back some kind of breakdown. It's fine. She's fine. And she has a lifetime of experience with pulling herself together when she's not alright.]

I'm fine, just probably haven't eaten enough today. You know...or wait, you probably don't know how it goes. Superheroes probably don't get woozy if they skip a meal.

[Through all of --that, Homelander just tilts his head, smiling gently as Nadine does the thing that she does, where her face goes a little blank for half a second. She looks fine, hair a little mussed maybe, but he's totally okay with just ignoring that for the moment.]

Not really? I mean, Maeve gets cranky once a month, if you know what I mean, and snacks seem to help. Too bad this place hasn't invented chocolate yet.

They've got stuff that's pretty close...but no, it's not that, I've just been...I don't know. I'm sure you've been up to much more interesting stuff than me.

[Homelander strikes her as someone who's often getting up to interesting and exciting things. And he's clearly more of an optimist than she is, he always seems like he's in such a good mood. She could use a little bit of that brightness right now.]

What's been going on with you?

Oh- [Homelander waves a hand at her, a smile cracking across his face] just the usual. Saving people, watching the sheep get pulled to slaughter.

[He laughs like it's all a silly joke, as if he hadn't been up at the crack of dawn one morning, watching the shepherds herd a few sheep in to a shed, hadn't listened to the muffled screams that came soon after.] Living my best life here in Thorne.

Is it still because your husband is in prison? Are you worried they might hang him too?

At least one of us is. No, I'm not worried they'll execute him. If they haven't yet, they're not going to. And he's not about to give them a reason to change their minds, he's not stupid.

[Unlike some people around here.]

I just feel...helpless. And I don't like feeling that way. I know so little about this world, how it works, what anything's like outside the castle and the town right around it. Who's even really in charge?

[Too many questions, not nearly enough answers.]

You're...really friendly with Thorne, does anyone...say anything to you? About any of it?

Well, that's easy. [Homelander almost beams, watching her against the backlit bookshelves and the dust motes glittering in the air.] The mages, of course. They're in charge. Well- [he rolls his eyes] it's mostly Ambrose, isn't it?

He's the big man with a plan and he'll tell us how to help.

[Soon, hopefully. Before Homelander will have to search out the dungeons again just to have a little fun. But he feels it, too. The restless boredom that comes from the drudgery of this whole ass place.]

There will be a plan real soon, buddy. Don't you worry your pretty little head about that, and when it comes, I'll take care of it.

I think the mages might just be in charge of us.

[There's a royal family, after all, and this doesn't seem like the kind of place that has ceremonial titles or positions. Royalty probably means something around here.]

And what about the rest of the world? How much power do the authorities here have in general? Hey...didn't you get to meet with some politicians or something when they showed us off at that big party a while back? How did that go?

[Nadine doesn't remember all the details, she wasn't given a chance to talk to anyone important, but she's pretty sure Homelander did.]
